Refreshing yet still lacking

Warning: Spoilers
This reboot of the 2004 TV series "Spirits" (a prequel of the film "Spirit Warriors" in 2000) is refreshing yet still lacking in some factors. I have watched the old series and I have been looking forward for possible remake or a sequel. And after 13 years iWant, an ABS-CBN online streaming service presents the most awaited remake of the series.

Spirits: Reawaken is an adventure/horror film set in the 90's. The music, color grading and the settings gives you that 90's vibe but there are factors that I think they should've improved. Including the places they used.

SETTINGS AND MINOR CHARACTERS Since the school is headed by a priest they should've used a school near a church or a convent. I think it would add more thrill and chills to the viewers. Eventually in the film, the personnels in the school are revealed to be part of the council. It is just confusing on how should I feel because their presence, i believe, should be mysterious. And although powerless, I should feel respect towards them being part of a secret council aimed to protect the frightening information about the incoming apocalypse. I know they are not a big part of the film but I think it will leave a huge impact to the viewers.

The story plots about a world domination by two powerful creatures. There are narrations that introduce them creating chaos all over the world, them being captured and that one is able to escape. It is just not clear to me on how our country or how the people of that specific small town got involved in some horrifying event and how did those people acquired such powers when one of the creature distributed it's power. (If you noticed that I'm wrong in everything I say here, I think it's the result of my confusion from the film.) But don't get me wrong. I understand it all. I do. It's just that they could've done way more than this. They should've made this bigger. More inclusion, more fun. More affected, much thrilling.

MAIN FACTORS and CHARACTERS Color Grading and Filtering - Very Good Musical Scoring - Good Cinematography - hmmmm. Good. Visual fx - Forgivable Imagination and Execution - just good. Editing - Good Stunts/Choreography - ugh.. Not that bad. Acting - Just okay.

I liked the color grading of the film because it gives you that 90's eerie vibe just right for the film. The musical score also done a good job in every scene. The cinematography also is good but there are some scenes where the angles are doubtful. When it comes to visual effects, as usual as what you see in some low budgeted local TV series, the vfx is below satisfaction but is forgivable. The execution of the film is just good but I think they must have made the viewers have bigger imagination of the mysteries and the supernaturals. They must've amplified the powers of every main character including the creatures. Though I know they can't control it yet but of course they should've been very powerful that they could cause fright. And I'm sure it will amuse the viewers. I think what they've done in the editing is good. The stitching of events is very impressive. Though there's this feeling that there are missing events in some episodes. You may not notice it but I think you'll feel it. The stunts or the choreography is somehow unattractive. It is good but it's something I will not buy. Especially the first training scene. That specific scene is odd. The way of training is odd. The place is odd. The people are odd.

The acting is just okay. But the overall direction is satisfyingly good.

I've mentioned above that the main characters ' powers should've been amplified already even before being trained. They should've add intensity to the scenes whenever they execute their power. Like it's okay to show off, you know.

Let's talk about Tripon, the main antagonist in the film. They should've gave Tripon a form. An overwhelming terrifying form aside from being invisible and possessing host bodies. I've only seen him from a PowerPoint presentation presented by the Spirit Council. If they plan to give Tripon a form after acquiring the teens' powers, it will be a bit non-shocking because of that glimpse from the scriptures. If he has a form now and will have that unexpected transformation in the latter, I think it would be very, very awesome.

Well for now, those are just my initial insights for the first 10 episodes of the season. I gave this an 8 rating because I think this deserves it.
