Did they lose the last 20 pages of the script?
Nightflyer7205 April 2021
You know what? I can take the cheese, I can take the poorly written characters, I can take the atrocious dialogue, I can take the threadbare plot, and I can even take the uniformly bad acting. Heck, some of my favorite movies of all time are early-80s slashers, and they're not known for being great art. My point is I love low-budget, cheesy movies. I'm here for it.

But you know what I'm not here for? A movie that has NO ending. At least in an 80s slasher, you could almost always count on a balls-to-the-walls, over the top ending that could allow you to partially recoup your time investment. In horror, the third act is where your money is. An audience will forgive a lot if you give them a great ending.

In What Lies Below, they apparently forgot to craft ANY ending at all. I could have taken the barely passable first two acts of this movie if the third act had just let it rip. Go insane, go completely and utterly crazy. Go gross out, go icky-sticky, go bloodbath, go off the deep end, jump the shark. But do SOMETHING! Make some kind of statement. A great, ballsy ending would have made it easier to give the rest of this movie a little bit of a break.

Instead, we get the worst possible ending any film can give: the abrupt "non-ending" with no explanation and no resolution, leaving you wondering why you were stupid enough to dispose of 90 minutes of your life for a director and writers who clearly didn't value your time. Or respect their own.

In conclusion, WLB is a mess. Instead of the crappy parts of this movie--and there are many--leading to at least a fun and crazy ending, the crapy parts end up being all there is. What an insulting train wreck. Extremely unsatisfying! There's good cheese and bad cheese in movies. This is rotten cheese. Pass.

Weak Conclusion
carlottajones-366114 April 2021
Warning: Spoilers
This movie leaves you hanging in a bad way. It's irritating to watch it because the ending is so unsatisfying. Also it lacks logic.

Incomplete movie
dcantony17 December 2020
Warning: Spoilers
This movie started out very intriguing and then it just dives. You have a creature that is never really verified, not seen except for his foot, could of did better than a foot. At the end your asking questions like what was this really about, what was his purpose, how did he get here, what does the light signify or mean, are the women for giving birth which is why he has replica's or are they used for a water source, just waaaaay too many questions at the end???? My advice don't watch unless you like scratching your head after?

You don't want to know what lies below
corksniffers4 April 2021
Coming from someone who loves b-rated horror and usually finds it pretty hilarious, this one is just a whole new level of bad.

Worse - the ending seems like a mistake edited onto someone else's film.

ZERO stars.

Mind Blown

I can honestly say I would rather take a Razor scooter to the shin than ever watch this movie again.

My first one star review
gregglc6 April 2021
Worst movie I have ever seen. Honestly, I am upset I wasted my Monday evening watching. It's not one of those "bad movies" you watch because it's that bad. It's literally a movie you shouldn't watch. Ending was the dumbest thing ever seen. It doesn't make sense.

Really Netflix?
nixxx_ns8 April 2021
Like, really? Someone on that board needs to be fired over this, I don't really know who or how many people but making this movie or getting it incorporated into Netflix selection is a fireable offense! It should have disclaimer next to it that says "watch on your own responsibility"... I've never seen anything like this garbage before and I saw thousands of films... Skip.

Not good.
ts-00004 April 2021
The casting of the daughter felt misplaced, she looked older than the mother.

Although the twist as the movie unfolded was an interesting concept,it felt incompletely made.

This movie failed overall, not worth seeing again.

Acting & cinematography was, average as well.

Movie Explained ***spoilers***
Mehki_Girl4 April 2021
Warning: Spoilers
1. What is the movie about? From the very beginning the movie is telling you what it's going to be all about.

2, Where is he from? First the title tells you.

3, Where he came from? In the very first scene, the girl is reading a book. The title is, "Lost Worlds" (hint, hint). The next hint is, all the references to water - natural and salted. Obviously, he's from a lost world under the lake. One would think Atlantis, but he's adverse to salt water.

4. What does he/they want? His world is dying. Maybe there aren't enough females to breed. He/they want to breed. As he says some species need to adapt weirdly to an increasingly saltwater world. What better way that interspecies breeding.

5. How did he get that form? Like the lampreys, he's a leech that affairs to whatever he can latch onto.

6. The color red? He's attracted to the color for some reason. Maybe his world his red. Mom is actually a redhead. She dyed her hair. This is in the 3rd scene. The drive home. He mentions he sees red in the girl's hair later on when they're in the boat. He would know mom's a redhead (carpet and drapes).

Goofs: Two completely different species cannot breed. Even related ones (donkeys and horses) often give birth to infertile offspring. How does he wear mom's cooking? Doesn't she salt the food?

I thought it was quite good even though it's a lower budget movie. It's creepy and unsettling with an unexpected ending.

False reviews lie above
IzzyMaeDoorite10 December 2020
"What Lies Below" is a kind of a flick that could end up being a total trash filled with so-bad-it-hurts CGI and nonsense screenplay. You know, like the most of Syfy made-for-TV creature features. But this one doesn't deserve all the rage. Yes, the dialogues are pretty basic and bland but it doesn't kill the creepy vibe going throughout the whole film length. The acting is decent - Ema Horvath is good as an estranged daughter and Mena Suvari finally stars in a horror movie that is not a garbage (although it's still hard to forgive her for "Carrie 2" and "Don't Blink").

The best part of the movie is its visuals and lore. Lovecraft-esque fear of chtonic entities, hypnotic enigmatic lights coming out of nowhere and minimalistic synth soundtrack are making "What Lies Below" a thrilling eye-candy which is pretty much enough for a one-off horror movie. It doesn't reinvent the genre or offers any real plot twist (I mean, we all know John is going to be a bad guy, and Trey Tucker's effective performance convinces us right after we see him) but definitely worth a watch for its atmosphere and its actors that probably did even better that the script could offer them.

STARTED OUT PRETTY GOOD...Then just bombed
catfanatic88811 December 2020
My five stars were for the first half of the movie which was building consistent tension and curiosity. I was kinda enjoying it until the SECOND HALF! It was like they had really decent writers who went on strike at the halfway point. Come on, my dog could have come up with a better half than this one! And it was a terrific cast doing the best they could in a very disappointing situation. Awww what MIGHT have been! Such a pity!

Makes no sense
djstu7719 December 2020
Warning: Spoilers
The film starts off well but descends into chaos like it does not know how to end the story. We also never find out who he was or what they wanted and I hope they don´t think the ending could lead to a sequel.

Why did the mother suddenly get sick? no explanation.

She sent her friend to tell her mother the boyfriend touched her and then went to sleep. She didn't wait to see what happened, the friend didn't say goodbye, we know she died but still makes no sense, and then mother did not confront her about it and just started watching television.

As the trivia says, one hour 27 minutes you will never get back.

Drinking Game?
mike_NY6 April 2021
Every time Mena Suvari says "baby girl," take a swig of your libation of choice. You will be wasted a third of the way into the movie, which is basically the best way to sit through it. It has some creepy/gross moments, a decent score, and the actors are on board, but you can't cover up the weak story, lame script, and gimmicky direction.

midnitepantera8 December 2020
Creepy, low budget movie that was fun to watch. It figures, if it seems to good to be true it probably is. LOL The guy is handsome, charming, intelligent in the beginning, then it got super GROSS and creepy. Wish they had the budget for better creature FX. Overall, not gonna win an Oscar, but it's a fun and bizarre popcorn movie for people that don't wanna see BUCKETS of Blood and body parts flying around the screen for 90+ minutes.

betsyhorowitz7 April 2021
What c***. After we see the shirtless "bad guy" (2 points) there is nothing else to see because nothing else happens. Who, what, why? None of these are answered.

Could have been, was set up to be but by half way through until the end- nothing.

Sometimes IMDB be off with the ratings
inexplicable0074 April 2021
Thisis is not some lazy uninspired skyfy slick so I'm surprised the rating is low. This movie does such a great job creeping you out (especially the main male character) and even the cinematography was different the writing was very realistic so I don't know what the issue is. It's original and well done.

Better than the usual horror/mystery crap these days
ricky_dry_county8 December 2020
1) Yes, the film drags quite a bit. 2) Yes, the guy's really hot. Great casting choices. Good to see Mena Suvari again. 3) Weird cinematography and color pallette wehich adds to the bizarro vibe here 4) It has shaded of absolute brilliance, and shades of silly garbage too. So, all in all a mixed bag that definitely scores above the Conjuring franchise themed horror motif that's flooding the scene these days.

Doesn't go anywhere
elainagray7 December 2020
Has some suspense but really slow and doesn't go anywhere. The only words Mena Suvari seems to say through the whole thing are 'baby girl' fifteen million times.
