Despite Konkana and Bhumi excelling in their roles, the movie tries to stuff too many lessons into its narrative

#MovieReview #DollyKittyAurAurWohChamakteSitare #Netflix #KonkanaSen #BhumiPednekar

How we missed you Konkana! Dolly Kitty Aur Woh Chamakte Sitare does not rise to the levels of Alankrista Shrivastava's previous works like Made in Heaven or Lipstick Under My Burkha but is watchable due to the compelling lead performances by Konkana and a terrific Bhumi Pednekar.

In trying to stuff multiple agendas like love, virginity, Indians' repressed sexuality, midlife crises and even gender identity, the movie becomes disjointed and tedious in parts.

However, Konkana revels in a triumphant return to mainstream cinema after a hiatus. In Radha aka 'Dolly', she lives the character of a dissatisfied middle-aged woman, unhappy in her job, sex life and of having not lived life to its fullest.

Vikrant Massey and Aamir Bashir do a commendable job in their supporting roles while Amol Parashar reduces to a boytoy stereotype.

Watch it if, like me, you have grown up enthralled by Konkana's clutch performances. Set your expectations right and you wont be disappointed

Dolly Kitty Aur Woh Chamakte Sitare. 2020. Alankrita Shrivastava

Just like her last film "Lipstick under My Burkha" this one also deals with not so amenably communicated female issues, their inner liberty and their intricacies. But unlike that film where the concerns were interlaced aptly with the screenplay, DKAWCS tries too rigid to fit them in the overall narrative. The film tries to touch on innumerable issues & taboos in the span of 120 minutes which made it fickle in the end. Even after a very talented cast DKAWCS fails to find its voice.

The film just dropped on Netflix.

Director Alankrita Shrivastava is back with yet another women-centric entertainer after Lipstick Under My Burkha. But this time she missed the opportunity and failed to deliver an amusing film. The potential star cast is completely wasted due to the bad script.

Bluff in the name of feminism
mohit-dolas18 September 2020
What is the director trying to tell? Is there a story? No Is there a moral? No Is there a character arc? Yes but shifts happen pointlessly

And the movie has so many self contradictory points with equal rights for women. Storytellers were so confused about what they wanted to tell that they decided to make a khichadi of all issues.

Beware of fake users and fake ratings!
Nand2Tetris18 September 2020
There's a bunch of users who created their account in August/September 2020 who have rated the movie 10/10. There's another bunch of users who created their account in July 2020 who have rated the movie 7/10. The other movies these users have rated recently are Abhay, Four more shots, Gunjan Saxena and Mrs.Serial Killer. So obviously there is a factory of fake users trying to crank up the average ratings. That speaks volumes about how good this movie is.

Watch for acting not for subject
Prof_McGonagall20 September 2020
Lot of flaws in script and execution. According to story gender equality means married men and women both can have extra marital affair for pleasure. One female character is confused throughout the movie and in the end settled for pleasure service for females (again for gender equality). The summary of the film is that there are lot of intimate scenes and in between they put two confused woman who somehow settles for something they feel women empowerment or gender equality. Only thing to watch is some good acting by all the characters, even those who had small roles.

Life in a Metro (sequel)
nikree29 May 2021
Felt how distorted and vulnerable we all are at individual levels.

It tried to hover around as many issues it could, and felt lost midway. Nonetheless, it did returned back and summed it up rather well.

Not a good, neither bad of movie, but some sort of an experiment which seems to be executed what it planned.

All characters are flawed, yet human. No conventional hero/heroine or villian.

On many occasions, it provokes all thr ethical questions and even raises questions of vulgarity. But at no point you'll feel disgusting, but rather it's quiet relatable.

I myself disagree with more aspects of the movie than I agree up. But I don't find it outrageous, rather it seems to raise quiet valid questions, if we look beyond justifying or rejecting the effort.

Chamakte Sitare - Yeah Right !!
madhukar3018 September 2020
"Dolly Kitty Aur Woh Chamakte Sitare" is a tale of two middle class contrasting women, struggling to rise above their system of belief and years of moral conditioning. Their pursuit towards a better social life in this temptations filled era, results in the duo getting trapped in a maze of overlapping shadows within. The movie tries to capture far too many of the 'realities' plaguing contemporary India.

Director Alankrita Shrivastava tries to pull off another "Lipstick under my burka" but with more sensitivity surrounding the family this time. Both the movies paint a similar picture with a lot of unnecessary & awkwardly mounted sex scenes. Screenplay is little better this time around. Cinematography, costumes and makeup are just par. Songs are surprisingly very good for a direct-to-OTT film. Konkana Sen's performance was decent, but Bhumi Pednekar's acting see-saws from good to poor throughout the movie.

Overall, Though the film employs broad strokes to get its point across, As it addresses female sexuality, the assertion of women's freedom in and outside wedlock, moral policing, rising intolerance, and other essential gender themes, It fails to nail anything really hard. A good one time watch when you have nothing else to do. Will suit middle aged & youngsters. Strictly adults only.

What a fabulous starcast completely betrayed by abysmal filmmaking - story, direction, editing. It's almost impossible to find such poor level of craft in today's world

Interesting premise
anntann22 September 2020
It may not be a perfect film...but I rated it 8 stars for the premise and performances- by and large. Plus the protagonists journeys. The women led story may definitely be uncomfortable for a lot of folks, especially men :) However its important that we chart the stories of women...their sexuality...their aspirations. Why not? Its worth a watch even if u are uncomfortable!

Story setup in greater Noida and aspiration of middle class
uandme1234514 December 2020
This whole movie is setup in Greater Noida ,where I lived after completing the college looking for my first job. This movie at some point of time reminds me struggle, I and others went through in my early days. Finding room within the budget and visiting Malls near by.

Envying others those having a car and hope that "apna time aayga" and other very very small thing that one may find childish.

Few of my friends use to works in callcenter (in collection area), and use to tell the story and pressure , undergoing to reach the target. As most of us where immigrants , sharing a flat among 5-8 people was common.

Sure kind of must watch but too many intimate scene ,So cant be watched with family and kids.

Not for everyone, definitely ahead of its time for Indian audience
nirmit_nanda26 September 2020
The movie isnt perfect, there are some half baked characters, storytelling couldve been more crisp and the ending could definitely have been better. However, the movie has some good moments. The reason why majority of people here are criticising the movie is because its hard for them to digest it. And if we were to reverse the roles and have 2 men instead of the 2 women playing those characters no one would bat an eye and thats that sad part about Indian audience. Just stop watching these movies from a "feminism" standpoint and you'll appreciate the characters and the story more. The drama that went down at the end was somewhat unnecessary and was abrupt. Overall, a good watch...just need to see it from a neutral instead of "feminism" lens.

Why so many negative reviews?
smuddan11 October 2020
I took a leap of faith and watched this movie despite bad reviews. It is a move written, directed and produced by women, therefore it is full of strong feminist messages. At the same time, it portrays necessary evils of Indian society: eve teasing, RSS bullying and shooting people dead at a gathering, the whole nationalist, neo nazi movement India is going through right now..

Do yourself a favor and watch this gem, piece of life movie with brilliant actors, real life issues and women learning to trust themselves and each other in the process. Gem of a movie!!

Breaking the stereotypes!
mayankshukla14049 October 2020
Dolly Kitty Aur Woh Chamakte Sitare is a self discovering journey of two backward middle class women from North India. This empowering feminist tale is about Dolly & Kitty who break the society norms and make their own choices. The slow liberating drama is rescued by its two lead characters.

The story revolves around the lives of two cousins Radha (Aka Dolly) & Kajal (Aka Kitty). The former is a working married woman living in Noida. And the later has just moved in from a small town in Bihar aiming to make it big in a metropolitan city. Both the sisters have taken different paths and Radha believes her cousin has chosen a wrong one. But as their paths cross Radha starts realizing the hollowness of her own married life. She begins searching for happiness in a young delivery boy. While Kajal starts looking for true love while working in a call centre offering adult companionship.

The film relies heavily on it's two principal characters and both Konkana Sen Sharma & Bhumi Pednekar do not disappoint. Konkana steals the show with her glorious act. Bhumi brings in a lot of vulnerability & boldness to her performance. They are ably supported by Amir Bashir playing Konkana's husband, Amol Parashar playing the delivery boy & Vikrant Massey playing a messy character who Bhumi falls for. There is also an interesting character in the form of Konkana's youngest kid who has different sexual preferences.

This unapologetic bold film is all about breaking free of the shackles and living life on your own terms. The slow pace does test your patience at times but you simply can't ignore the underlying message it tries to deliver. Alankrita Shrivastava deserves an applause for another slice of life tale about women which is relevant as well as hard hitting. Streaming on Netflix.

Midlife Crisis in woman(8* by debojyoti)
debojyotichakraborty-2411618 September 2020
There doesn't seem to be a movie in Bollywood with so much detail about the Midlife Crisis in woman.A very touching movie.Indian society has been very secretive about the sex life of women from the very beginning. The movie broke that real privacy. It would be nice to show more details about the midlife crisis in man's.👍👌👏

Konkona is an icon in Indian cinema. No wonder if a new actress says she wants to be an actress like Konkona.👏👏👏🙏👍👌

As long as Bhumi is going,She is developing herself more by acting.Very well adapted to the character.👍👏👌

I will request girls/woman of all ages to watch the movie.🙏

Extremely Boring, and a bit Jarring
shibenb21 September 2020
The movie starts really good with a good premise about a middle class family, and certain sexual tensions around family members, but then the movies gets extremely boring. There is something about the movie, which keeps it feeling disconnected with what it is trying to say. And the boring nature does not help. I am not using "extremely" as a hyperbole here. It is indeed very boring.

The movie has the same cliched tropes that Netflix absolutely loves to show in their productions. Indians are bad people, Hindus are bad people, Indians are orthodox, Indian men are horrible etc. etc.. Netflix India's HInduphobia and the racism continues to show in this movie as well which is not surprising given it seems to be their mission in India. I am mentioning this because it doesn't help on top of the poor quality of the movie.

It is to be stayed completely away from. It is just yet another Netflix India's mediocre production.

A chance squandered

The movie starts on a promising note. Flounders from there onwards. Konkana, Bhumi and the rest put up a show which makes the watching bearable. Sigh! An opportunity wasted.

BORING . AVOID
anubhasinha18 September 2020
Nothing but a glammed up version of Lipstick under my burkha. Baiting on feminism , sexism and mysoginy just to get brownie points is so DONE WITH . Calling yourself a great filmmaker just because you talk of issues is not filmmaking . I can watch a documentry on women's issues. Show us some talent in filmmaking . Also invest time in script writing , screenplay which are essentials for a film.
