The Rope Curse (2018)

A Taiwanese film about a teen girl who was bullied at school so she decides to hang herself. The rope now has a curse on it and woe to the bullies as the curse takes revenge on each of them. This was an average movie at best. Kind of hokey in a way, but it did try to deliver the scares and succeeded one time. At least to me it did. The rest of the time, the film has a sing song-ish quality about it and it's hard to take it seriously. Overacted and goofy at times, the characters are unbelievable and the storyline suffers because of it. Everything in this movie you've seen before and probably in better movies. 6 out of 10 stars.

It was just way too generic...

I had the opportunity to sit down and watch the 2018 horror movie "The Rope Curse" (aka "Zong xie") now in 2020. Needless to say that I hadn't even as much as heard about it prior to getting the chance. But the fact that this was an Asian horror movie, was more than what was needed to make me sit down to watch it.

Well, let's just say that writer Keng-Ming Chang and director Shih-Han Liao tried...

So what I mean by that? Well, this movie was mundane. So terribly mundane. It was just like they had bought a blueprint of how to make a horror movie and followed it step by step literally. Everything in the movie was so generic and predictable, and that was a terrible blow to the movie's overall enjoyment and entertainment value.

While the movie suffered from having an abysmal script and storyline, I will point out that they actually had a good enough cast ensemble for the movie, and actresses Hsin-Yen Hsu and Kimi Hsia really carried the movie quite well with their performances. Just a shame that the script was so mundane.

For an Asian horror movie then "The Rope Curse" was just, well no sense in beating around the bush, boring, for lack of better words. There was nothing scary in the movie, especially so since everything was so scripted and predictable.

"The Rope Curse" was watchable, for sure. But this was by no means an outstanding movie. And there are far better and more enjoyable Asian horror movies readily available.

My rating for this 2018 horror movie is a flat and mediocre five out of ten stars.

Forget This Pile Of Nothing...Use The Rope To Learn How To Tie Knots Instead!

A bullied character who you go from pity to a total dislike of very quickly!

A useless dumb boyfriend with a wimpy girlfriend who appears to not know what to do about anything, and an annoying as hell sidekick.

A bad script, terrible lighting, lousy camera work that was worse than amateurish and a story-line of such a banal telling that you very quickly lose interest and caring about it!

Yes the obvious is in play almost immediately and, when it comes you are not surprised. 'Ju-On' poaching it is...with others to come.1 hour and 20 minutes before the story even begins to make a modicum of sense (up till that point you have been trying to piece together what was going on, where is it heading and why are you bothering to watch it at all 😴) if you can call it sense.

If this was a school project of a few 15 year olds you would say, 'Good first try' but, it wasn't. This was seasoned professionals who just churned out a heap of junk! And now for the really BAD news. They made another in 2020 and its no better than this one at all!
