Constantly Moving, No Time To Breathe
Jamejarrs13 August 2021
I've been a long time Monster Hunter fan and it's clear that some love went into this movie, the script is full of references to the game and in-jokes. The models all look great but the animation is janky and weirdly bouncy at times.

My main complaint is the story, things are just constantly happening and the pacing is way too fast. This leads to what should be emotional moments just falling flat and those moments themselves just being brushed aside because there's no time to linger on them.

If this was a series it might have had the time it needed to develop these characters more and get you to care for them. Not offensively bad, just mediocre.

Bad
martinez-pipe13 August 2021
Bad editing, rushed.

The sound mix it's awful.

The animation is mediocre.

The plot is ok.

The monster hunter ingredients are the best of the movie.

I would recommend it if only you are a fan of the VG and you are curious.

A Decent Adaptation
whiterose-5482812 August 2021
This movie is an adaptation of the Monster Hunter video game series. As a fan of the series I was interested in watching it to see how closely it follows the games.

Overall it is a faithful adaptation, all the iconic monsters are there and it looks and feels like it's part of the Monster Hunter universe. Where the movie falls short however is in it's story and animation.

The movie follows a young aspiring Hunter named Aiden who is trying to prove himself as a monster hunter when a more experienced hunter named Julius arrives at his village to warn them of an elder dragon on it's way to destroy them. The villagers don't believe Julius as he's an outsider so he takes Aiden with him to see the elder dragon for himself. From then on the two share a sort of student and mentor relationship.

Personally I feel this story would work better as a series rather than a standalone movie. We don't really spend enough time with the characters to get to know them very well and having an elder dragon (essentially the most powerful monsters that exist) be Aiden's first big monster is a strange choice. I feel it would have been better to see Aiden grow and improve as a hunter over several episodes, eventually leading up to an elder dragon.

Now for the animation. Though it's impressive to look at and matches the art style of the games, the character's movements feel very stiff and their voices often don't sync up very well with what's on screen. Ironically it feels more like a cutscene from one of the games rather than animated movie quality, perhaps this was the intention but it doesn't work very well.

Overall it's worth checking out if you're a fan of the games, just don't expect it to be anything amazing. At the very least it's a lot more faithful than the 2020 live action movie.

Bad animation and short story.
sandman-2989513 August 2021
Final fantasy movie that came out almost 20 years ago has better animation than this. I've seen GameCube cutscenes that look better. How this was even greenlit in it's current form is amazing. It's so bad do not support this level of meritocracy.

A decent little time waster.
lord-blade15 August 2021
Not a great story here. Just a newbie learning the ropes and instantly becoming an uber hunter... which is basically how the games work, so I can't complain.

Overall it's a decent short movie with some great animation for the monsters (who show off attacks from the games) and mostly decent animation for the people, except for the odd plastic looking faces.

If you're a fan of Monster Hunter, you'll enjoy this. If not, you will probably just be confused.

A terrible story with lackluster animation
siderite12 August 2021
Another animated video game adaptation, it is a lazy film that is barely an hour long and looks Chinese. You know, 3D animated with that fake hair and primary colors and an unnatural movement. I was genuinely surprised to see that the animation studio is American, probably they used some game engine to make it. Worse, the editing is bad. It's feels like someone took the "footage" and cut it haphazardly in a weekend.

I have not played the games, but it was pretty clear what kind of games they would be from the first minutes of the film: there are monsters and you are hunting them. Therefore, naturally, you have to introduce a wannabe young hunter with whom teens can identify with, who starts like a noob and grows into a hero. Only it doesn't happen like that. The main character is annoying, careless and stupid. His poorly animated face makes one think he's a psychopath, as he only seems to feel enjoyment when putting everyone in needless danger and he doesn't seem to care when other people get hurt or even die. And the "battle" at the end is awful. The "elder dragon" is actually quite small and the two methods used to defeat it could have been used directly, without anyone having to fight or get hurt.

Bottom line: a hair short of being one of those comedic films that you can enjoy only completely wasted and laughing at its stupidity, it is a lazy, soulless, mindless corporate enterprise that has no artistic merit whatsoever. At least the Monster Hunter movie starred Milla Jovovich and it started well before turning to crap, but this one feels like one of those "don't let the license expire" films.

Rushed and forgettable
shubhamjohri-201215 August 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Movie is extremely rushed, we are not properly introduced to the universe and the puns and references the protagonist makes fly above your head. It looks like a movie based on a video game (?). The plot is very simple: our heroes must defeat a big bad Dragon who is destroying everything in its migratory path. The groundwork for a sequel is laid.

As a Monster Hunter Fan
AusViViX12 August 2021
As a Monster Hunter Fans. Everything is wrong with this movie. It's not accurate at all. It's really hard for me to watch the fight scenes. But the graphic is good. The animation is stiff and bad. Could've been an epic battle with the elder dragon. I don't get attached to the characters at all, fast-paced. The script is boring and kind of cringe.

good watch when u dont have anything else to do.
shizgu12 August 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Of course its not an masterpiece, but its not horrible. Its biggest flaw is the pacing id say, its extremly rushed. One of (actually many, suprisingly for a netflix game based movie) things it does good is sticking to its source material. Names are spelled correctly, and actors do a good job pronouncing them. Animation is respectable too. One of first fights goes smoothly and its nice to look at. Overall, in my opinion a very solid game based animation, and a decent movie.

Absolutely horrendous story, characters and dialogs
lionelheintgi5 January 2022
Good god please don't watch this show. Even if you do expect an absolute nightmare of a plot and dialogues. A clueless, witless and unbearable annoying kid convinced the ace hunter who's on a mission to make every villages aware of the recent elder dragon migrations to basically stop spreading the news and fight the battle. No precautions in case of failure, no nothing. Everything is so happy-go-lucky and you just can't wrap your head around it. The hunters struggling against a so~so monster bested the deviljho easily right after and go on to beat an elder dragon on 3 days' notice. When will they stop using these stupid and groundless troupes, Good god please stay away from this.

A good adaptation but too short
tediousgamer12 August 2021
They could've made this two hours and it would have added much needed character development, and world building, but I think they did a decent job. If they ever decided to make a movie on MHGU's monsters I would go crazy for that.

A Fun Short Prequel To Monster Hunter World
dalasear1218 August 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I'm pretty surprised by the terrible reviews of this film by Monster Hunter enthusiasts. My first MH game was MHW. I recognized the main character (Excitable A-Lister) and the "Serious Handler" as soon as I saw the trailer. The scene on the boat seems like it takes place immediately before we meet them at the beginning of MHW, which to me is a really cool easter egg. I don't think the film was the greatest thing I've ever seen, but it was definitely better than the live action film. As the other reviews have said, if the film was longer and had a bit more character development, it would have been much more impactful. The animation is not that great at times and so the fight scenes could have been better. But the reason I gave this a 7 out of 10 is because I feel like it genuinely captures the essence of MH. For the short amount of time the film had, I think it delivered exactly what was necessary.

Too dramatic (?)

Warning: Spoilers
Using video game standard, it's feel like watching bunch of newbies trying to finish the first map/ dungeon.

The combat is so damn simple for an overly exaggerated boss.

I'm quite salty coz these guys are supposed to be "Pro Hunters"

Badly executed movie...
crimsonhobby12 August 2021
Well...idk how to explain this but, i thought it will be good coz i saw the promotional video first..

But nope...after i saw the poster and the movie itself, i feel...weird..the CGI is the main point here, not the FPS..the character has pretty bad facial expression with not very interesting story..what i really love about this movie is only one : the world..its beautifully made, but not the character.

Am i playing the game or watching movie?
sisubalan5 August 2022
Its alright. Its more to the gaming scenes rather than an animated movie. Not a fan of the voice casts and the mouth movements. Weak plots and unnecessary killings. Wont watching it again but recommended to those that like game scenes.

A Short Story for Fans of MH World
Rage_Dump17 August 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I'm not quite sure if the studio was simply testing their chops at making animated features, but there's some potential here.

The animation looked better than most current Netflix releases, aside from some stiff movement or blank expressions here and there. At one point I paid close attention to the English lip syncing and it was pretty believable. There's a lot of good texturing and it all looks very faithful to the source material.

The plot is a brief backstory to the young hunter of the 5th fleet, Aiden. Along the way, we get some lore and get a feel of what fighting some monsters would really be like without any carts or potions. The plot never falls apart, because there's no time for it to. It's incredibly fast paced and it doesn't allow much time to develop anything deeper than a flashback.

The dialog is hammy, yet true to the games. There was way too much puns for me, but they were made tongue-in-cheek so it's somewhat forgivable.

They used all the familiar original Monster Hunter sounds any fan would recognize, the voices matched how the characters should sound, and the music didn't get in the way.

*SPOILERS* I was deeply disappointed "Proof of a Hero" didn't play once Lunastra got hit with the dragonator. This is a mandatory thing to do and it would've added a "hell yeah!" moment to the scene, especially if the hunters all ganged up on her after being hit like any good hunter would. But instead there was SILENCE after she was hit and the hunters stood around like "oh good that did it." I would've given an extra star (or maybe even 2) if this scene was wrapped up with an adrenaline filled desperate fight to the end with Proof of a Hero blasting in the background.

How come in 2021 images still look like 1990s videogames? Everything else evolved but not computer graphics?

Monster Hunter World
Ali-hamza-re12 August 2021
This film was so good way better then the live action movie. Film is short an hour but it build on such a good pace and all characters were likable. There few technical animation problem and cut from here and there but beside the film story and voice acting was top notch. Give it a go if you love monster hunter world. It be a emotional ride.

Not the best...
max_g-3035023 December 2021
The animation is not the best, especially for a movie made in 2021. Looks like a cut scene from a game made in 2010 or something.

Nothing has any weight, not the weapons, not the creatures nor the people. Everything moves so fast. Even when they are just talking, they have these crazy arm movements.

Also the pacing is all over the place.

This movie is leaving a lot left to be desired.

I watched it.
drkwly21 August 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I agree with other reviewers who said it's rushed. I think they tried to accomplish too much in 58 mins and unfortunately fell short. There's also something off about the animation and sound. Sometimes the volume sounds loud and sometimes it's really low, almost inaudible. Especially the background music. It sounds inorganic. Additionally, the storyline is upsetting. Instead of sticking to the original plan and safely evacuating the village, they decide to stay and fight. This still ends with the village in ruin and unnecessary loss of life. We're not even sure if they kill the dragon. It seems like the dragon just gets washed down stream?? Like huh?

Wow....
dontakeitpersonal14 August 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I didn't play this game myself, so I'm probably missing something. But as a neutral viewer, this was bad.

In s nutshell: boy wants to be be a monster hunter, meets Ace hunter, you know he will teach this boy, need to fight elder dragon to save town, done.

Nothing more, nothing less. No backstory, meet the characters, some kind of introduction into who what where when.... just the fight and he hunter. Bad animation which I didn't expect from a Netfliovie.

same mistake as "MH" Movie.
lihaozhou13 August 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Let's make a long story short:

Steve Yamamoto Joshua Fine.

Do you two think that holding the "Character & Background Setting Book" is enough to complete a "MH" animation?

Old American movie routines.

[1: Kill a black character first. ] [2: Another girl to die to stimulate the audience's emotions. ]

You gave up the original supporters, and then made the new audience think "this must be a stupid game." The audience is looking forward to the battle. And you didn't grasp the point of "the player felt the challenge at the time" in the game at all.

What you do is just keep repeating: "This is Elder Dragon, she is a very dangerous creature." Show it to us! Not to let the actors repeat! Again and again!

Okay, let's talk about your good side.

I am glad that you have genuinely authorized character modeling!

This is your only advantage. OMG.
