Primos creator Natasha Kline has known since she was little that she wanted to make her own show. “I was five years old and I was like, “I want to be an animator,’” she recalls.
Equally influential on the childhood of the director/writer/storyboard artist was her large, diverse family and hometown of L.A., a giant city where “there’s grit and there’s dust and there’s texture.” It’s a place she loves for the “real people who live here, despite what the world thinks of Hollywood as this glamorous place.”
Growing up, the creative hadn’t really seen a series that reflected her coming of age as a Latina with two dozen cousins in the Inland Empire. If the recent success of Marvel’s X-Men ‘97 taught us anything, it’s that sometimes a more animated approach to comic book adaptation is the way to go. Just last week, we had a very promising looking trailer for Warner Bros.’ new two-part animated Watchmen adaptation. And now, in another exciting development, Deadline are reporting that Warner Bros. Animation and DC Studios are gearing up to make a Blue Beetle animated series.
Ambiguously described as neither a direct sequel to nor redux of Ángel Manuel Soto's live-action Dceu movie, the animated Blue Beetle show — which showrunner-director Miguel Puga (The Casagrandes) and writer Cristian Martinez (Good Trouble) have been working on since early this year — will instead "build on the movie" whilst diverting from retelling its story. And, intriguingly, the report goes on to suggest that if Puga's animated take on the franchise is successful, it could yet pave...

Jaime Reyes’ time as Blue Beetle may continue — in animated form.
Warner Bros. Animation and DC Studios are developing an animated series based on the DC Comic character. The potential show would follow on the 2023 feature film, which starred Xolo Maridueña as the title character, who gains super powers after an alien Scarab fuses with his body.
Miguel Puga (Nickelodeon’s The Casagrandes) is serving as showrunner and director on the animated project, with Cristian Martinez (Good Trouble) writing. The Blue Beetle film’s writer, Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer, and director, Angel Manuel Soto, are on board as executive producers, as are John Ricard and Galen Vaisman; both were EPs on the movie, and Vaisman will oversee the series project for DC Studios.
Warner Bros. Animation and DC Studios declined comment.
More to come.

At their best, films aimed at young kids can be enjoyed by adults as well and truly earn the "family movie" title. 2023 brought plenty of titles that fit the bill, from box office hits like "The Super Mario Bros. Movie" and "Migration" to streaming treats like "Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget" and "Leo."
Now it's 2024's turn to show us what it's got, and while the early months of the year tend to be pretty dry when it comes to family movies, as studios are holding them back for school vacations and long summer days, there are some fresh, funny, and heartwarming new releases on offer. From a new "Peanuts" special to a fantasy movie filled with dragon-related perils to the latest high-flying antics of "Kung Fu Panda," here are the best family movies of 2024 so far.

The latest "Star Trek" animated series, "Very Short Treks," attempts to honor — or at least revisit and poke fun at — arguably the most underrated series in the nearly 60-year-old franchise. "Star Trek: The Animated Series" was a two-season Saturday morning cartoon show starring most of the original cast and written by many of the original writers, which filled in the gaps left in the historical records after the Enterprise's five-year mission got cut short by CBS.
While "Star Trek: The Animated Series" could be a little hit-and-miss (just like every other "Trek" show) it expanded on the original series in crucial ways. The animation was limited, but there was no longer any need to hold back on ambitious creatures and concepts due to budgetary concerns. So the cartoon featured an array of bizarre worlds and life forms that had never been possible on the show before and have rarely been explored since.

Roe v. Wade has been overturned, children and teachers are dying in classrooms and healthcare is not yet a fundamental right for every citizen in the United States. But Cristela Alonzo is still smiling like she does during all of her stand-up specials, including her newest Netflix venture, “Middle Classy.”
“I have always smiled in my stand-up because I’m so excited to be there,” Alonzo tells Variety. “I always tell people that the audience wants to be on your team in stand-up. You got to show them that you’re there for them, and you’re happy. So why do we not have those moments of joy more often?”
Even through a Zoom video interview, Alonzo radiates positivity and delight in a time when it’s easy to give in to despair and anger. In 2014, Alonzo made history as the first Latina woman to create, produce, write and star in her own U.

Actor, comedian and writer Cristela Alonzo doesn’t like it when competition series make the judges or the hosts into the stars of the show, because she wants the contestants, who are the ones tasked with physically, mentally and emotionally demanding feats, to be celebrated. So when she was tapped to host The CW’s “Legends of the Hidden Temple” reboot, she made sure to cheer on the teams that came through every episode.
“I want them to know they’ve got it!” she tells Variety. “I wanted to make sure that everybody was Ok — meaning, if a contestant asked for water and they weren’t heard, I would stop things to make sure they got a bottle of water. I’m the youngest in my family, but I’m the matriarch, so my instinct is, I need to make sure everybody’s Ok.”

There may not be a more iconic opening in the modern animation landscape than that of SpongeBob SquarePants. Only one cartoon jingle is bold enough to ask questions like “who lives in a Pineapple under the sea?” and demand to know if “nautical nonsense be something you wish.”
The show open for SpongeBob SquarePants’ second spinoff, The Patrick Star Show, has a lot to live up to then. It’s unlikely to be as infamous and influential as its forefather’s opening (because what could be?) but that doesn’t mean it can’t have some fun on its own. Thankfully, we’re happy to report that the intro for The Patrick Star Show is quite fun! And don’t just take our word for it, because thanks to the kind folks at Nickelodeon, we can exclusively reveal it right now. Take a look below:

Women in Animation revealed the Class of 2020 Best Short Film winners from the organization’s Wia Class of 2020 Showcase during a live Zoom ceremony Thursday, Sept. 17.
Because the coronavirus pandemic curtailed most of the festivals where student filmmakers typically unveil their work, the Wia organized the showcase as a way of helping the burgeoning artists get their short films seen by animation professionals, recruiters, hiring managers, agents and studio executives in a virtual setting. More than 400 graduate and undergraduate student films from 121 schools worldwide were reviewed by a jury of industry professionals.
The winning short films are “Ciervo,” about a young girl who holds violence, submission and independence in an uneasy balance as one morphs into the other, by Pilar Garcia-Fernandezsesma, who recently graduated from the Rhode Island School of Design; “La Vida de una Piñata” by Elena Heller, Marina Kunz, Raphael Pfyffer and Kai Muri, graduates of Switzerland...

Few can argue that Latinos haven’t been greatly underrepresented in Hollywood, particularly at the creative level. A key reason, many say, is an insufficient comprehension of what the terms “Latino” and the gender-neutral “Latinx” mean.
When Hollywood thinks about Latino or Latinx talent, its instinct is to turn to the Oscar-winning Mexican directors Alfonso Cuarón, Alejandro G. Iñárritu and Guillermo del Toro or to acclaimed Spaniards such as Pedro Almodóvar as mistaken examples of inclusion. Most would have a difficult time naming an American Latino filmmaker besides Robert Rodriguez or creatives other than Jennifer Lopez and Eva Longoria.
Such a superficial grasp of the distinct groups of people included in the ethnic terms “Latino” and “Latinx” has led to the perpetual omission of U.S.-born-and-raised Latinos in front of and behind the camera. Their experiences are either entirely ignored or lumped together with those of their Latin American counterparts,...

The Covid-19 pandemic has ushered in a new appreciation for streaming platforms while families are “together at home.” Variety recently reported that the streaming competition depends on strong children’s content. Kids have always needed creative, educational and inclusive stories. But during this time of self-isolation, the streamers have become a conduit to the outside and a way to stay connected to a world that is full of diversity. Close to two decades after “Dora the Explorer” premiered on Nickelodeon, a wave of animated projects that put Latinx characters front and center has made its way to the small screen. From Disney Jr.’s Latina princess show “Elena of Avalor” and Guillermo del Toro’s “Trollhunters: Tales of Arcadia” trilogy at Netflix, to Nickelodeon’s family sitcom “The Casagrandes” and Cartoon Network’s adventure show “Victor and Valentino,” there is a growing roster of projects that explore the diversity of Latin American cultures.
These shows are driven, in part, by what “The Book of Life” director Jorge Gutiérrez calls the “Dora” generation, an entire swath of creators who grew up seeing a Latina central character as a normal thing. Gutiérrez, who’s working on an ambitious Mesoamerican fantasy epic limited series entitled “Maya and the Three” for Netflix, believes these strides are indicative of a belated shift in the industry at large.

The multi-camera followed 13-year-old Nick, short for Nicole, who infiltrates a family with the intention to get revenge on them for unknowingly ruining her life. As she gets to know the family, she will find compassion for them and will struggle with whether or not she can ultimately go through with the plan.
Hart played the career mom to Astin’s knuckle-headed dad, with Siena Agudong (Nickelodeon’s “Star Falls”) as Nick. It also starred Lauren Lindsey Donzis and Kalama Epstein, who are also veteran child actors.
