Canadian actors have settled an arbitration case to get makeup artists and hairstylists on predominantly white film sets trained in how to style hair or do makeup for performers of color, including those who are Black and Indigenous.
Actra, the country’s actors union, last year filed a grievance against the Canadian Media Producers Association, representing English-language indie producers, and the Association Québécoise de la Production Médiatique, their French-language counterparts.
With mainly white casts, Actra argued Bipoc performers were long denied hair and makeup people who know what they’re doing when it comes to working with natural hair textures and darker skin tones. The case was heard over two days by arbitrator William Kaplan before a settlement was reached.
The settlement calls for recommended products and equipment so hair and makeup artists on film sets can make Bipoc castmembers look and feel the way they want before the cameras roll on their characters,...

The Canadian Screen Awards has unveiled nominations for the national film and TV prize-giving, and the CBC civil rights drama The Porter leads the film and TV field with 19 mentions in all, including for best small-screen drama.
The first Canadian drama series from an all-Black creative team, which also streams on BET+, centers on the lives of Black train porters and their families as they launch North America’s first Black labor union in the 1920s.
The TV categories, voted on by around 3,000 Canadian industry insiders, also sees the CBC series Detention Adventure and Sort Of – a Peabody award-winning show about a gender fluid young Muslim in Toronto played by Bilal Baig — nab 15 nominations each in an awards show shaping up to be a major showcase for people of color.
That follows Canadian film, and TV industry efforts to ensure diversity and inclusivity in the country’s indie production sector and prize-giving process.

When CBC drama “Diggstown” hit Canadian airwaves in 2019, star Vinessa Antoine became the first Black Canadian woman to lead a prime-time drama on network television. And while plenty of ink was spilled over that stat at the beginning, when the Floyd Kane-created series wraps its fourth and final season on Nov. 16, it does so not with a media bang, but a whimper.
So what happened?
“Diggstown” revolves around a corporate lawyer named Marcie Diggs (Antoine) who begins working at a legal-aid office after her aunt takes her own life. Over its 26-episode run, the drama tackled real inequities that exist in the Canadian legal system as well as sensitive themes including mental health in the Black community, Indian Day Schools, queer rights and queer representation. For the first three seasons, those stories took place in North Preston, Nova Scotia, home to Canada’s largest Black community by population — one...

My earliest memory is of going to see "Star Wars" in the summer of 1977 with my mom and my older brother. I was three years old, so it's mostly a vaguely sensed recollection, but one moment stands out with startling clarity: when the lights went down, I screamed.
This was back when movie theaters actually went dark. No dimmed house lights lining the walls, no light strips to guide you up and down the aisle (save possibly for faded glow tape that hadn't been replaced in years). It was pitch black in that theater for a second or two until the tattered bumper preceding the coming attractions flickered across the screen. I remember that, too. I remember feeling saved.
I've been chasing that sensation ever since, often to the annoyance of my moviegoing companions. For me, the ritual of going to the movies was as important as watching the movie itself.

An eight-hour drama inspired by Carolyn Arnold’s “Madison Knight” detective novels is being developed by Muse Entertainment and Pop Fiction Entertainment.
Hélène Joy will star as Madison Knight, a daring detective who works to investigate criminals throughout the series. Orion Lee (“First Cow”) will portray Knight’s work partner, Detective Steven Hung. The action-packed crime drama is set on both the Pacific coastline of Sydney, Australia and the wilderness of British Columbia, Canada.
“As I read the books, I was immediately taken with Madison as a leading female character. She is unapologetic, unpredictable and deeply flawed. An extremely reluctant heroine if you will. What I love most is her sardonic nature and deeply sarcastic sense of humor. She doesn’t suffer fools and has little time for small talk,” said Joy, on her new role of Knight, in a statement.
Australian writer Justin Monjo and Canadian writer Lynn Coady are developing the series.

While the concept of new scripted shows may already feel like a bygone idea in this era of pandemic-frozen productions, Syfy is actually moving forward with one such offering in The Surrealtor. Moreover, the main cast of the series has been officially announced, with a headliner familiar to viewers of the channel in Wynonna Earp’s Tim Rozon.
The Surrealtor, which landed a 10-episode series order back in February—alongside its touted Day of the Dead series—signals momentum with the announcement of its main cast players. The series puts a fixer-upper spin on the Ghostbusters paranormal exterminator dynamic, showcasing the exploits of realtor Nick Roman (Rozon), who leads an elite team who specialize in dealing with property-polluting poltergeists, fixing the things that go bump in the night so that deals can be closed, all while struggling with personal demons of their own.

Schitt’s Creek alums Tim Rozon and Sarah Levy, along with Adam Korson (Seed), Maurice Dean Wint (The Kid Detective), Savannah Basley (Wynonna Earp) and Tennille Read (Workin’ Moms) are set as series regulars in The Surrealtor, Syfy’s upcoming drama series from Blue Ice Pictures. The 10-episode series begins production September 15 in Newfoundland, Canada.
Developed for television by George Olson, The Surrealtor follows realtor Nick Roman (Rozon) and an elite team of specialists that handle the cases no one else can: haunted and possessed houses that literally scare would-be buyers away. Diggstown‘s Vinessa Antoine is set for a recurring role opposite Kyle Gallner in CBS All Access’ straight-to-series true-crime drama Interrogation. Co-created by Swedish writer-producer Anders Weidemann and John Mankiewicz, Interrogation is an original concept based on a true story that spanned more than 30 years, in which a young man (Gallner) was charged and convicted of brutally murdering his mother. The series’ first nine episodes will be available to binge in any order with each episode structured around an interrogation. The multi-linear approach will give viewers the opportunity to follow their instincts and develop their own interpretations of the facts of the case and ultimately decide innocence or guilt. Antoine plays a street-smart diner waitress who becomes crucial in a decades-old murder investigation after becoming involved with the private investigator. Canadian born Antoine’s TV credits include Fox’s The Resident, Being Erica, Haven, Heartland, NCIS, Lucky 7 and General Hospital.
