a Disney version of Black Mirror or it is a Black Mirror version of Disney teen movie?
hycgiggle9 June 2019
I don't hate the episode, Miley Cyrus is perfect for the character 'Ashley'. It just that the story is too predictable, and I can't stop thinking if it is a Disney version of Black Mirror or it is a Black Mirror version of Disney teen movie.

I was disappointed that Billy Ray was not in this episode of Hannah Montana. Nine Inch Care Bears.

Not sure if Black mirror episode or new lighthearted scifi tween adventure movie
Erlik_Han6 June 2019
What the hell was this? Let's ignore that Miley Cyrus is in this. What was up with the dumb cookie cutter, tween empowerment adventure movie, clearly targeting 12 to 16 yo girls.

Or the constant attempts at humor and "quirky acting". Or the happy ending!!?

Look, it wasn't that bad. But it WASNT black mirror! Even the sci fi in this one felt super lazy and made absolutely zero eense

There's pop star in the future, too!
tedicaprio6 June 2019
What's with the hate? Black mirror must cover all aspects of life, right? And there's pop star in the future, too! I think this episode is interesting.

How to describe...
W011y4m55 June 2019
Wow, Rachel, Jack & Ashley Too was atrocious! Utter garbage & shockingly crap episode of Black Mirror - easily the worst in the show's history. Felt like a cheesy movie made by Disney Channel. Quite astounding to think it was written by Charlie Brooker - the same man responsible for creating stories like "Hated in The Nation" & "The Entire History of You". To try & do its inadequacy justice, I can only say it's exactly the type of "Americanised" episode we all feared Black Mirror would become once it was announced Netflix was to take over the series' production; the nuanced, subtle messages are non-existent & we're left with a reductive alternative which lacks even a shred of relevance when compared to any predecessor installment. What happened to the bleak, foreboding & witty original we all fell in love with? The sharp critique of society & our flawed behaviours? This - on the other hand - is stupid. Irredeemably nonsensical & ridiculous. Clichéd, hammy & cringey. There's bad & then there's BAD & THIS bad is indefensible.

Miley Cyrus but in a Black Mirror universe
fred-timoteo5 June 2019
Warning: Spoilers
The most awaited and the worst. This episode shows the degradation of the music industry and also we are able to do a parallel with Miley Cyrus in her life of Hannah Montanna, Disney is her uncle and she is forced to be that pinky little girl that all the teenagers love, but one day, she choose to get the hell out of that box. Something happens to her and we need a hologram to sing for her. What's more interesting is the fact that there was this technology to create the holograms version of the artist, that can play huge stadiums every night of the week, the days when musicians needed to cancel shows are gone. This is a guaranteed cash cow. And isn't that every music label's dream in an era where selling out humongous venues and continuous, large-scale tours are pretty much the only way to make money? The problem with this episode isn't so much that it doesn't have anything to say, but rather that it refuses to truly engage with the ramifications of its premise. With a weak plot and a lot of funny moments it goes from a sci-fi drama to a Sunday afternoon comedy.

What the hell ?
mrloki-080285 June 2019
I'm gonna try not to spoil the episode. It starts off pretty strong I have to say, with a dark and very interesting look at popstars and their impact on the youth. I even thought "hey, this is really good, might become my favorite of this season if it continues that way"

But then, for some unknown reason the story becomes extremely dumb. The later half of the story feels like an other story really, with a more fun atmosphere which is so disappointing ! The characters become obnoxious, the story accumulates clichés and even the acting and directing become mediocre if not bad

Everything feels so wrong and out of place what the hell

Might be the worst episode of Black Mirror ever honestly

Like a 90s Teen Movie
chris_smallwood21 June 2019
Black Mirror doesn't keep itself to 1 genre. That's why it's so good. This is Charlie Brooker's take on a teen movie. If you're too up your own to enjoy a teen movie then don't watch this. I thought it was really enjoyable.

Listen to the message
aly_kat-511956 June 2019
It's not the best episode of the series and certainly not of the whole show, but the message is still there as it is in every other BM episode. Stop basing ourselves off what we see in the media, it's not all rosy! I can't help but notice the people giving less than 5 stars can't spell... read into that what you will.

Black Mirror Turned Kids Movie
ROOKreations6 June 2019
Warning: Spoilers
So, hmmmmm, where do I begin? In the beginning I was partially intrigued and curious where the story would go. I found it interesting with the younger sister's obsession over the Ashley Too and I thought they were going to go more in depth on what happened to the sisters' mother, but they never do.

The writing throughout is riddled with cringe worthy dialogue and stupid one liners. The entire episode sounds like it's the plot of an awful kids movie:

"Two girls meet their pop star hero as she's trapped in a toy. They help the star defeat her evil aunt who's using the singer's mind to generate new songs to make a fortune off of them."

Just purely awful! This episode doesn't even feel like an episode of Black Mirror. Easily the worst episode of the entire show.

Better than expected
isabellaj-8747718 June 2019
Before watching i did not expect a lot due to the bad reviews on here. However when watching I actually really enjoyed it and found it the best out of season 5. Its different to a lot of the previous black mirror episodes which is probably why the reviews aren't great, however the episode is actually really interesting to watch.

Not that bad!
geejee22 August 2019
Just to counter the many bad reviews: don't let yourself be put off, just watch the episode with an open mind. Surely not as mind blowing, tech heavy, utterly depressing as most other episodes, but neither the worst episode of the series.

It's pretty bad
MoistMovies5 June 2019
Just skip this one. It's just cringe. And lacks all the interesting social commentary many previous black mirror episodes defined so well. Oh whoop de doo.. The music industry is a corrupt pile of crud... Really insightful. Throw in some bad scifi and that's what you get with this story.

In-fact this was by far the most mediocre season of black mirror by far, no big interesting questions veiled in twisted ideas, alternate similar realities to our own or just creative stories in general. All the episodes have totally lost the feel and creative writing ability previous season had. Ep 2 was pretty good, but you could watch that without the black mirror title and easily see it as a good thriller short with no connection to BM. Nothing about it made me think its from the same universe.

The pre netflix black mirror is still the most superior. I hope they can find that spark again...

Least favorite Black Mirror
berrebimarine20 June 2019
Probably my least favorite and least realistic episode of all seasons. It started off well with a good insight of the impact of pop culture and icons on youth, but halfway through the episode becomes unrealistic, mediocre and not even entertaining, accumulating clichés and bad jokes. It feels like the writers thought having Miley Cirus was enough for the episode to be good, although it was not.

As a big Black Mirror fan, I was very disappointed by this episode that didn't live up to the other seasons standards.

Solid Black Mirror, no matter what people say
JMaekelae3 September 2020
Some claim that this episode is like a kids version of Black Mirror by Disney. Some say there's no social commentary or message. What are you people on? This episode carries all the hallmarks of the series.

I'd say that without Miley Cyrus (who's excellent in her role, btw), the average would be at least 1 point higher. It's really sad that people let their prejudice come in the way of enjoying something.

7/10 (very good)

Not as much to think about
imdesigner15 June 2019
This isn't a bad Black Mirror episode, it just doesn't have as big of a shock factor as most episodes and doesn't make you think as hard as others. All round enjoyable but could have used a bit more depth.

Entertaining, but not really a Black Mirror episode
e-s-lachnit12 June 2019
Warning: Spoilers
I can understand a lot of the comments on here. The episode is not really a Black Mirror episode in the sense that it shows the destructive effect of technology on peoples' lives. It is not as dark (though had a lot of promise, as many already pointed out), and is certainly one of the lightest - if not the lightest - of the five seasons of the show.

My biggest issue with the episode is not the tone, but the fact that it takes a leap with a LOT of technologies, without properly explaining what happens and why. Most cringeworthy example: if technology is so advanced, how on earth did no one hack into the doll before?! Very lucky that the dad had developed just the right interface to make that happen... For me, this crucial plot point ruined the "omg-this-could-happen-irl" feeling that Black Mirror episodes usually have.

That being said; I did find the episode entertaining. There is humor, some unexpected twists and turns (not all for the better, but okay), and I liked seeing a happy end for the second/third time in the series. You could see it as a gateway episode towards the heavier episodes that have stronger messages.

All in all - not a strong Black Mirror episode, but an entertaining hour nonetheless.

Writers strike?

So what's going on with writers recently? Game of Thrones and now this? Are they just lazy or what?

Miley Cyrus hated Hannah Montana too

Just go into this episode knowing that and you should enjoy this as much as I did. Not the darkest or mind blowing, but it was clever and fun

Kid Friendly
MovieHead12310 June 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I really liked this episode because it was kid friendly. There weren't any sex scenes, like how there is in most episodes. I usually have to be cautious when watching Black Mirror and my 13 year old is around. I liked how the sisters bonded and how the older sister ended up playing and performing with Miley's character, Ashley. I'll definitely give it another watch and invite my daughter to sit and join.

what happened to black mirror???
rdmcflyers-952475 June 2019
This was the worst episode of the entire series. it looked and felt like a bad tween disney channel movie. the cast was horrible and there were no redeeming qualities to be found. charlie brooker has given up and that's a sad thing.

Nine Inch Nails in another life
dolguldur-269016 June 2019
I see a lot of people commenting that it's not very Black Mirror - maybe you're already too used to weirdness. I only watch Black Mirror once in a while and I thought this one fit right in, because, lets be honest, it is still too weird to NOT be Black Mirror. In the end I liked how it was weird but still (for once) with a happy ending and did not leave me with the usual all-is-lost-I-feel-so-depressed-now kind of vibe that I usually feel after watching the show.

Also, all the Nine Inch Nails adaptions in a completely different way - I thought that was fun! I enjoyed it. Sorry.

Pandering to a younger BM audience
devonleighjohnson5 June 2019
I may be biased as I am both a Miley Cyrus and Black Mirror fan, but these reviews are a little harsh. Sure, it has a weak climax, but it's still a fascinating concept. The original songs by Miley as Ashley were catchy and believable. Miley's acting was a little unbelievably swear heavy, but in some of the more intense scenes you can really see what an actress she is. Perhaps if you're an older viewer this is gonna be one to skip, but consider checking it out with your daughter.

More like Pink Mirror
moaz-217 June 2019
This episode does not belong in the dark universe of Black Mirror, it starts with strong potentials then screw every thing over with a childish and poorly written plot.

I was not happy at first to hear that there will be only 3 episodes this season, but if that's the best they got it's better to shut the series down for good.

I liked it. A lot.
phhoeniix13 June 2019
They decided one episode would end in a more up-beat tone then "the world's going to become a s**t-show in the next ten years" and I thought it brought some life to it. It's okay to have one or two nicely ended episodes. I think this gets bad reviews because two out of three of the episodes this season aren't pushing the "technology is evil" standpoint. I recommend it, it's one of my favorite episodes to date. The one star deduct is for the few cliches that slip in throughout, but it wasn't terrible.
