What a shocker! I loved it.
therealjaysmoke16 September 2023
Oh my word. This is the type of movie that you just stare at the screen after it's all done and ask yourself, what in the world did I just watched......but in a good way. The story for me was brilliant, original and surprising.

The bloody beginning got me really curious but after half way in, I was still wondering what this was movie about. Was it about illegal organ trade market? Was it about a mad doctor eating organs who does IVF on herself? It was just weird and naturally all fingers were pointing at this doctor, not knowing the person I thought would be the antagonist wasn't. It's a really smart but wierd story. I loved the acting and the characters.

Definitely not for the inpatient. This is a movie that requires your full attention inorder to truly appreciate what is going on. Give it a moment if you love drama/thrillers.

Daughter of Frankenstein
RebelPanda29 August 2023
"Birth/Rebirth" is a psychological horror film that explores the consequences of playing God and the ethics of medical advancements. It follows two mothers, Rose and Celie, with contrasting perspectives on life and death. Their lives intersect when Celie's daughter dies, and Rose's experiments to bring the dead back to life become relevant. The film delves into the emotional impact of this resurrection on both mothers, raising questions about the boundaries of maternal instincts. It features unsettling and graphic scenes, drawing inspiration from David Cronenberg and classic horror literature. Laura Moss approaches the concept of body horror and extreme maternal instincts from a feminist perspective, leaving a lingering impact without relying on jump scares.

It's alive!
ferguson-617 August 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Greetings again from the darkness. When Colin Clive bellowed, "It's alive. It's alive", in James Whale's classic FRANKENSTEIN (1931), it instantly became an iconic moment in cinema history, and inspired many new readers to seek out Mary Shelley's 1818 novel. Since then, there have been numerous takes on the idea of bringing the dead back to life, and this latest is the first feature film from writer-director Laura Moss and their co-writer and collaborator on their award-winning short film, FRY DAY (2017), Brendan J O'Brien.

The film opens with the frantic emergency delivery of a newborn where the mother's life is in danger. This scene bookends the story, and it's not until the end when we realize what's happening and why. As an opener, this throws us a bit off track, and it's followed up by showing us the close mother-daughter bond between maternity nurse Celie (a terrific Judy Reyes, "Scrubs") and six-year-old Lila (AJ Lister). The next morning is a mother's worst nightmare, and this takes us into the depths of the hospital and the story.

Bacterial Meningitis takes Lila's life in a matter of hours, and her body ends up with onsite pathologist Dr Rose Casper (Marin Ireland, "Justified: City Primeval"). Socially awkward doesn't do justice to Rose's personality, as she seems to be incapable of empathy or even a normal conversation. However, she is obsessed with finding a cure. No, not a cure for meningitis or even cancer, but a cure for death. And her latest "patient" is the recently deceased Lila.

When Celie tracks down Rose at her apartment, she is stunned to see Lila in bed attached to monitors, while Rose's pet pig tromps around the kitchen. It's at this point where we realize we have been horror-conditioned to expect Lila to stagger from bed and spread atrocities across the city, wreaking havoc on all who have wronged her. With the creativity of the filmmakers, not only does that not happen, but instead an odd example of teamwork builds between Celie and Rose. It's a brilliant turn of events, and one that elevates the film within the horror-thriller genre.

Rose's obsession and focus is quirky and odd and unconventional, and watching Celie not just join in the mission, but actually contribute, is quite interesting. The contrast between the two women is obvious - Celie sees people (babies) as they are born into the world, while Rose seems them just after they depart ... these are the first and last stages. There is really only one misstep here - involving Muriel the pig - but most of the movie is exceptionally well written and acted. Ms. Ireland's Rose will surely make most viewers quite uncomfortable - especially with her method for gathering fetuses for research.

Playing God or trying to outwit nature and biology is typically a losing battle. The film has bits of Frankenstein, PET SEMETARY, Chucky from the Child's Play franchise, as well as HP Lovecraft's RE-ANIMATOR. As the two women begin to share traits previously only visible in the other, the film harkens back to the old adage - just because we can do something doesn't mean we should - only with a big twist from a unique point-of-view as a final shot. It's a dark movie that certainly isn't for everyone, but here's hoping Laura Moss's film finds a midnight movie audience.

Opens August 18, 2023.

Good Debut Project From Laura Moss
chenp-5470825 August 2023
It was pretty good.

It's a solid psychological horror movie with an interesting concept, strong direction and good performances from Marin Ireland and Judy Reyes. Throughout, the camerawork and production design is pretty good as it helps add the creepy atmospheric tones. The direction and writing from Laura Moss was pretty good as Moss was able to provide strong direction and interesting writing concepts into the narrative that were interesting and engaging to observe. Alongside some pretty solid uses of some horror gore and blood moments.

As mentioned, the performances are pretty good and even the child actor had some pretty good moments as well. The narrative definitely is influenced by Frankenstein or something from David Cronenberg as the narrative, while at times could improve, does explore some fun territories. The dialogue is pretty good as well and the characters were interesting to observe. Some of the pacing could have been improved and the characters were interesting although I wish there was a little more to the characters.

Overall, it's a good Midnight movie. There were some pretty good blood and gory looking moments.

Casper's Monster
Howling_at_the_Moon_Reviews15 November 2023
Phew, that was... emotionally exhausting. Technically this seemed much more like a dark, atmospheric drama... however I FEEL like I just watched a horror, so that's a new and interesting experience that I appreciated.

There was so much to be appreciated about this movie. The story was intriguing and engaging. It took a subject matter that was familiar, yet out of the grasp of our current reality and made it feel feasible and realistic. It was done with a finesse and tact that was eerie, unsettling, yet relatable.

A large portion of the success here is due to the performances by our two leads. The mother did a great job giving a gut wrenching performance, and the doctor in particular served us a character that was so unrelatable yet so round, consistent and realistic. They both did a pretty stellar job.

The pacing got just slightly off mainly towards the middle and dragged a bit, but nothing that was unredeemable. I was pretty glued to the screen, taking in the beautiful picture quality, a bit of gnarly gore, an intriguing story and some truly solid acting. I found myself wanting more once it was finished, but in a good way. Would recommend.

A Thought-Provoking Exploration of Identity
mastermindanish-703479 September 2023
"Birth/Rebirth" offers a unique and thought-provoking cinematic experience, deserving of a 7-star rating. The film delves into the complex concept of identity and existence with a fresh perspective.

Set in a world where individuals can undergo a mysterious process of rebirth, the narrative navigates the consequences and moral dilemmas that arise from such technology. The plot is layered and keeps you engaged throughout.

The film's strength lies in its talented cast and their ability to convey the emotional weight of the story. Performances are commendable, particularly in scenes that require deep introspection.

Visually, "Birth/Rebirth" is a treat, with striking cinematography and a hauntingly beautiful atmosphere. The film's score complements the eerie tone, adding depth to the viewing experience.

While the film explores profound themes, it occasionally leaves questions unanswered, which might frustrate some viewers. However, it also encourages discussion and contemplation, making it a conversation starter.

In summary, "Birth/Rebirth" is a modern exploration of identity that challenges the boundaries of science fiction. It may not provide all the answers, but it certainly raises intriguing questions that will linger in your thoughts long after the credits roll.

The glowing reviews are either paid or purposefully bloating.
CandyassGoth22 December 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Would I watch this again? No.

Would I recommend it? No.

Will you miss anything by skipping this movie? Still no.

Horror? No. It's a drama about medical and parental morality.

Characters? Watching Rose felt like watching Eugene from The Walking Dead (In all fairness she did have *some* charming moments but overall the character just fell flat). Celie was fine, she kept the scenes from being unbearable. The kid was boring but she was a reanimated corpse, so. (Although not focusing more intimately on the impact on the daughter was a terribly missed opportunity imo)

Was it interesting? The idea is, but the movie itself isn't.

Thought provoking? Yes, as in you'll sit and imagine more exciting ways this movie could've been made.

TO BE CLEAR, I am not giving it a low rating because the kid didn't turn into a zombie or get possessed or something, I am giving it a low rating because the movie was boring and the scenes felt like being dragged through gravel. There was not enough action or intrigue for the topic of literally bringing (and keeping) the dead back to life via questionable means. How do you manage to make that boring? This movie does with characters you barely care about, dreary grey scenes and the bear minimum of possible ideas used. It lightly coats a mold that could be SO much deeper. Sure, a movie doesn't need jump scares to be interesting, but even as a drama it needed more actual drama??

It's barely a thriller or a psychological horror, there were no 'special effects', no 'new life to Frankenstein', and no 'lingering impact', no wow factor, and calling it creepy? Please, people. None of this is in this film unless you have seen no other movies/stories in your life and you've just come out of the womb.

We already know many mothers will kill for their kids; some would feel bad, some wouldn't, it's not revolutionary. We already know many people in science would push the ethical boundary for the greater good, whether struggling with those choices or not. We know this, and although the summary isn't misleading and this movie does portray the characters experiencing these subjects, but it was incredibly lackluster and contains the most basic of ideas one could come up with for such a juicy topic.

The glowing reviews are misleading. It's a slow medical drama between two uninteresting characters about keeping a kid alive at a moral cost. If this was the intention, then it passed. However, it doesn't mean it was enjoyable. It missed out on countless opportunities.

Who will enjoy this movie? People who haven't seen many movies or read many books, people who don't ask questions, people who are easily impressed, people who prefer slow movies, people who have a personal connection to the creators.

No hate on the actors obviously.

Original!
mmillington55417 September 2023
It's not often that the horror genre throws up an original idea these days, but this film is a rare example demonstrating that it is still possible. It is a twisted and disturbing tale that avoids falling into established genre cliches. Not an easy film to watch, especially for the squeamish, with lots of blood and body parts on display. But for those with strong constitutions, the story is gradually revealed, drawing the viewer ever more deeply into the twisted plot and the increasingly mad behaviours of the two lead characters. The acting is very good, somehow managing to engage the viewer whilst at the same time revealing the repellent nature of their actions.

6/10. Watchable
athanasiosze15 September 2023
Overrated as hell, by no means this is a 77/100 movie (Current Metascore rating). Furthermore, this is mislabelled. It's not horror neither thriller. This is a sci fi drama. Many people who are gonna watch it in order to get scared or enjoy themselves, will be disappointed. This is not an enjoyable movie neither mindless fun. Plot is really heavy.

However, this has nothing to do with the movie. It's not director's fault it's mislabelled or overrated.

Actors are very good. Always a pleasure watching "Carla" from SCRUBS, she is definitely skilled enough for more dramatic roles. Marin Ireland nailed it, too.

Plot was really heavy though. I didn't expect something like this. To be honest, if i knew this was a sci fi psychological drama, i wouldn't watch it, at least these days. So, if you are in the mood for a sci fi drama with very good acting performances, a drama about motherhood above all, you will probably like it more than me. I didn't enjoy it, therefore I cannot recommend it. Remember, this has nothing to do with horror.

In any case, it's not boring and the ending is rushed.

So very, very dull...
paul_haakonsen5 September 2023
Right, well I had absolutely no idea what I was in for here, as I sat down to watch the 2023 movie "Birth/Rebirth", aside from it being a thriller or a horror movie. That, and the fact that I hadn't already seen the movie, made me sit down and watch the movie.

Well, I managed to sit through an insanely boring 62 minutes of the ordeal, then I just tossed the towel in the ring out of sheer and utter boredom. The synopsis for the movie sounded fair enough, but the storyline and script in the movie, as written by Laura Moss and Brendan J. O'Brien just failed to catch my interest. The narrative was bland and rather pointless, as the story trotted on in a monotonous pace, and I found nothing exciting or thrilling in the storyline.

The movie has a fairly small cast ensemble, but I will say that the leading actresses, Marin Ireland and Judy Reyes, carried the movie quite nicely with their performance, despite the fact that the storyline failed to entertain me.

Visually then there was nothing to be impressed or thrilled about in "Birth/Rebirth".

This is not a movie that I will ever return to finish watching the remaining 34 minutes of, as I just simply didn't care about the characters nor found much of any entertainment in the storyline.

My rating of director Laura Moss's 2023 pseudo-Frankensteinesque movie "Birth/Rebirth" lands on a very generous three out of ten stars.

Shudder is coming to life
chrislawuk28 September 2023
There was the movie The Influencer from Shudder I watched recently and now this one. Its cool to see the streaming service evolve over a short time, and now producing some of the best horror movies coming out in recent years.

The two things which sold this movie to me, was one the medical research detail, and secondly the special effects. Although bringing someone back to life is pretty implausible, this movie goes as far as it can do to sell the idea to those (like my self) who are not medically trained.

The medical sequences do look very realistic, and the story does get dug in to the science and procedures, where most other dumbed down horror modern movies fear to tread.

A well made and well acted suspense thriller
Steve99203 October 2023
It is not a true horror, but it is medically graphic, so be warned. Both lead actors do a good job, taking their respective characters in two long gradual arcs. One from an emotionally cold, socially marooned, savant existence, to eventually showing some small instances of warmth and connection, possibly even yearning?

The other, from a warm, caring, nurse, mother, to being morally complicit in their dubious scheme to cheat death.

Tension is driven along by good editing and an idiosyncratic, edgy soundtrack, that draws you in to the point where you yourself feel complicit, as you root for the pair, in their dastardly, if well intentioned, endeavours. It is however broken at a few points with some, I am sure, deliberate humour.

It could have had the last 8 minutes or so cut off to make a tidy 90 minutes. As by this time it had tailed off into borderline nonsense.

If you want a scary movie AVOID THIS
Neptune1656 December 2023
Warning: Spoilers
No way this movie deserves these glowing reviews. It wasn't scary, it was mildly creepy. How quickly the mom accepts the doctor kidnapping her child is absurd. The ending is so dull and rote it could've been a dark comedy or spoof. The acting isn't great despite what you've read. It's like they're trying to outdo each other cliche to cliché. Everything is done in a manic, slow-motion kind of way if that makes any sense. The whole movie seems like it's stuck on one gear. Very odd on so many levels. I wanted SOMETHING to happen in this movie. There was no tension at all. I really wanted the twist to be the lady's dead mom's brain to be in the little girl.

The horrors of a mother, not the movie.
Patient4449 September 2023
Birth/Rebirth has an interesting premise, not an original one but what it chooses to do with it makes it different.

If you're going into this movie thinking you're going to see a Frankenstein rip off then you're wrong. It's about the horrors of a mother losing her child, mixed with a team of doctors doing everything in their powers to bring the child back.

Thus this one is more psychological drama than anything, has some cool scenes, nice attention to details, feels like a good view overall.

The ending for me fell as flat as it could, but I guess this was its destionation all along. The road there was enjoyable indeed and I think with a better ending Birth/Rebirth could have been fresh and with a nice impact.

I shall recommending this one, especially for a late night view, just remember it's not horror, you won't get scared but you still might be entertained.

If you enjoy it I also recommend Resurrected 2023.

Cheers!

Not to look at easily, but quite interesting
qeter25 October 2023
Seen at the Viennale23: okay, for middle aged people (boomer) that movie is extrem. There are no shocking moments, but the play with live and death; to bring a real child daughter back to life, showing all ugly circumstances is not typical horror movie business.

The director Laura Moss must be a very special character to be able to make movies like that, ethically across the border.

Still, there is some truth in this disturbing story. The love of a mother goes beyond live. And that love can be stronger and be obsessive - even the suffering of the daughter cannot stop selfish motherhood.

Fine soundtrack completes the pictures.

I cannot give more than 6, because it is no fun to watch. But highly recommended!

How far would you go to save a loved one?
paulclaassen8 November 2023
Warning: Spoilers
'Birth/Rebirth' is an entirely new take on the living dead genre. It is so well scripted that it is almost believable.

Dr Rose Casper (Marin Ireland) is a pathologist, and one can't help but notice there is something very cold about this character - almost as if she has no emotion (which effectively ties in with the film's premise). However, she is a brilliant doctor who has been working on the concept of reanimation since she was just six years old.

Celie Morales (Judy Reyes) is a maternity nurse, and single mother. One morning her 5-year old daughter is not feeling well, and she dies later that day. When Celie enquires about the whereabouts of her daughter's body, she notices something very odd about Rose's behaviour.

With all the twists and surprises it is difficult reviewing this film without doing spoilers. From the film's synopsis you'll already know the daughter is being reanimated, but this detailed film has a lot more in store than just another living dead movie. Let's just say Rose and Celie's paths cross due to unusual circumstances surrounding Celie's daughter. 'Birth/Rebirth' is a slow burn descent into the depths of hell. How far would you go to save a loved one?

'Birth/Rebirth' is brilliantly acted. Both leading ladies (Marin and Judy) were so convincing in their respective roles that I won't be surprised if they were to receive Oscar nominations. This is a unique film, but be warned; there are a few very graphic images that might be difficult to stomach.

Two hours of my life I can't get back
JoeB1317 December 2023
Warning: Spoilers
This movie was.. pointless.

The plot is that a coroner is engaging in some mad science and steals the body of a preschooler who died of meningitis. The mother of the child happens to be a nurse at the same hospital after the coroner resurrects the child, and creepy shenanigans abound.

The method involves taking amniotic fluids from pregnant women who meet a certain tissue type. And we watch the two characters get involved in a creepy symbiotic relationship to keep this child alive.

It's slow, tedious, and kind of creepy, and not worth watching. It doesn't help that neither of the leads are very good actresses, or the subject is a dead kid.

Hard Pass.

***I TAKE MY PREVIOUS REVIEW BACK***Not sure how 3 different sites have this rated so high.
mqwbqmj6 September 2023
AFTER WATCHING THE MOVIE ALL THE WAY THROUGH I THINK ITS ABSOLUTELY GREAT. IT DID BUILD SOME EMOTION BUT NOT EVERY TIME IT SHOULD HAVE... THE ENDING WAS A TYPICAL "DAMN WHAT A STUPID ENDING" SCENE BUT IM HOPING A PART 2 WILL FIX THAT.

Previous Review First of all it's pretty dull to say the least. There's no emotion whatsoever. You don't feel a connection to any character by any means. They don't explain what happens or why or even how, so it doesn't allow you to feel the pain if a mother who just lost her child. Hell the mother doesn't even cry when he baby daughter dies. One day the daughter is fine the next morning she sick and that very night she is dead. Then the mother is at the morgue the very next morning without 1 tear drip she'd. She goes about her life in a very normal emotionless way. I usually get that lump in the back of my throat when I see a mother lose a kid in a movie. But in this movie the love, the lost, and the grief are all completely emotionless. So you're just on a "welp life goes on" kind of attitude.

Nonsense
TheNamelessCzar24 November 2023
Not to give too much away, but the movie follows some of the old plotlines of Pet Sematary and Frankenstein. This is not a horror movie, and is more of a psychological drama than anything else. There are some gory scenes, but nothing scary. Unfortunately, the movie is muddled by characters doing things that normal people would never do and bad acting overall. Also, would it kill anybody to hire a medical consultant to make sure that they actually get some of the scientific stuff right? Tons and tons of medical mistakes and garbage. I watched it because it was listed on several top 10 lists of best horror movies of the year, it certainly was not that.

Sneaky Rose
kosmasp28 September 2023
No pun intended - you may have seen the show Sneaky Pete - which had Marin star in it. So there is the connection, in case you were wondering. Also she is quite ... well her character is quite "sneaky". Maybe not in the sense you may think .. also she has the best intentions ... doesn't she? That was rhetoric of course.

I had no idea, what I was about to watch. This being part of the Fantasy Filmfest it could have been anything. Genre and otherwise that is. The acting was really good and the twists kept on coming! You may be able to see some of them - but even so, they are not less shocking! Well shot and edited, this is or touches upon the drama genre ... and our lifelong search for answers to questions about extension of life ... especially if we are not able to let go.

Not sure if there is any medical accuracy ... I assume it is as close as it can get (some things seem to fantastical) ... so take that with a grain of salt ... and just enjoy the craziness .. what would you do? In any of the places ... Stephen King must like this I assume!

Performances save it.
dweston-3866919 September 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Whilst not exactly an original plot (Frankenstein,Hellraiser, to recently Larry Fessenden's Depraved) this showcases two exceptional performances from Judy Reyes and Becky\Emily Wilson\ Andrea Risborough lookalike Marin Ireland as the two twisted medical ' professionals' playing God by using human/pig embryos to keep an already brain dead child alive.

The results are rather predictable with the child becoming zombiefied (killing the donor pig) but it doesn't go down the usual avenue of having the child escaping the apartment and running amok in New York City.

This is a mature horror where the performances and slow pace build up the amoral, sick story.

Heavy, heavy stuff
Amthermandes14 November 2023
Birth/Rebirth is about pregnancy, loss, hope, dread, and obsession. Two women's paths are crossed and conjoined. One woman is a socially awkward, yet brilliant pathologist looking to take medicine and human science to a whole, 'nother level. The other woman is a devoted maternity nurse, wrought with grief. The two work together to achieve the same goal, but with different motivations.

This seemed to me to be a more "realistic" take on the main theme of movies such as Frankenstein, Pet Sematary, or Re-Animator. Apart from some well placed humor, the mood is very dark and unsettling, and I imagine it would have a larger impact on women, and women who have had problems with pregnancies in the past. It's an interesting story that didn't go the way I thought it would.

It's a slow burn for sure, and the climax isn't wholly "shocking," but that might just be because I'm a male and can't experience the exact nature of the situations these women are in. The acting was good, cinematography a little sluggish, overall an entertaining and thought-provoking drama piece that overall misses the mark in the genre of horror. It's not a dramatic horror, but more of a horrifying drama.

To compare it to similar movies, it feels a lot like Possessor, just not nearly as graphic or trippy. It's also a lot like Mandy, in the way of artistic expression (without the vivid colors of course), mood, and soundtrack. I'd also compare it to A Wounded Fawn, Saint Maud, and Hellbender.

Drama with some horror aspects
aronharde1 October 2023
Birth/Rebirth is a medical thriller and deals with two women trying to play God, each for her own reasons. They both meet after one of them loses her daughter and the other one is able to revive her. Both characters are now testing how far they can go to keep her alive because to survive they will need to harvest biological materials from pregnant women. The movie definitely turns more towards the drama/thriller site and only a few pieces of horror are put in this. Marin Ireland and especially Judy Reyes are doing a really great job in their respective roles and the movie is definitely tension filled. Although I have to say that the tone the movie is going for is not really my cup of tea because I was hoping for more horror and less drama, but I think the movie did a good job and if you are someone who this sounds interesting to you will probably enjoy it. Engrossing update on the Frankenstein myth
gortx14 November 2023
Laura Moss' engrossing medical thriller is an update on the regeneration of the dead theme. Pathologist Dr. Rose Casper (a determined Marin Ireland) has been experimenting with reviving dead tissue of animals. Opportunity knocks one day when a six year old girl Lila (A. J. Lister) is wheeled into the morgue. Dr. Casper springs into action making the dead child her biggest experiment yet. Things get infinitely more complicated when Lila's mother, Celie (a fierce Judy Reyes), finds out. Celie happens to be a nurse.

What makes Moss and co-writer Brenden J. O'Brien's screenplay so involving is that it focuses more on parenting and morality than the experiment itself. The story sets up a fascinating dynamic between the two medical professionals. As Lila's mother, Celie, obviously has a maternal attachment to her daughter, but, there is also a symbiotic relationship that develops between the Creator and her Creation. Dr. Casper is fully committed to her work, even using her own body as a vessel for her experiments. Still, a mother's bond is inviolate. It becomes more than just a test of wills, everything is at stake for both women -- even at the expense of the Lila's unfortunate soul.

Moss' direction is gripping and the script plays out in an intelligent direction save for one miss-step which seems to be included as if to justify the "horror film" label. It does get gruesome, but never for it's own sake. The basic theme, of course, goes back to Mary Shelley's Frankenstein myth. There are no significant male characters. It's a powerful collaboration between Moss and her four main actresses (Breeda Wool plays an expectant mother who gets caught up in the crossfire). Ireland and Reyes are exceptional as the dueling women at the center of the tale.

BIRTH/REBIRTH updates an old tale. The storytelling isn't the most innovative, but it's smartly told and genuinely thought-provoking - not to mention disturbing.

Gruesomely original!
deacon_blues-8863225 February 2024
Warning: Spoilers
This is one nasty little horror film about the evils of medical innovations, even with the best of intentions. Marin Ireland is her usual menacing scream queen self; A tour de force for her talents!

If ever a film was a strong recommendation for letting go of deceased loved ones, this is the one! If this story is the alternative, then just don't go there!

A mother's love is boundless, apparently, and this film is a prime example! In a choice between medical reanimation and actual witchcraft, witchcraft seems more humane!

I felt bad for the charming little pig, Muriel! She really was the only bright spot in this absolute tale of woe!
