This year, for the fifth time in Emmys history, the number of nomination slots in the Best Reality Host category has decreased from six to five. Although all but one of the four previous cases resulted in full slates of immediate repeat nominees, Gold Derby’s users have come to a solid consensus that, this time, only four 2022 contenders will return and that they will be joined by first-timer Alan Cumming (“The Traitors”). Given the boldness of this prediction in such an instance, the idea of a previously nominated but long ignored host making a comeback should also be explored, since that outcome is statistically just as likely.
Cumming sits in fifth place on our odds-based predictions list behind seven-time consecutive winner RuPaul (“RuPaul’s Drag Race”), the “Queer Eye” quintet, Nicole Byer (“Nailed It!”) and Padma Lakshmi (“Top Chef”). Despite having precedent in their favor, the six-person “Shark Tank” team...

“During ‘Making the Cut’ we didn’t have this much time. We had one day, seven hours, two days max to create our looks. And this was never enough time to do actually something tailored, like properly tailored,” says “Making the Cut” winner Yannik Zamboni. Since the designers had four weeks to create their 10-look collections for the “Finale,” he wanted to show that side of his creative ability. “And that’s why I came up with the idea to do a tailored collection.” Watch our exclusive video interview with Zamboni above.

It was sad to see Jeanette Limas go after the “Concept Store” assignment on “Making the Cut,” especially because it meant she wouldn’t be able to show the 10-look collection she designed. After they put so much work into their collections, I think all four should’ve gotten the chance to show them off, but alas, I didn’t get a vote. We did end up with three stellar finalists, though: Rafael Chaouiche, Georgia Hardinge, and Yannik Zamboni. Which of them was named the next great global brand in “Finale”?

The elimination of Markantoine Lynch-Boisvert from “Making the Cut” in the episode “Social Media Content” surprised no one more than Markantoine himself, who didn’t think he should have been sent home. But despite his protestations the competition moved on with its final four: Rafael Chaouiche, Georgia Hardinge, Jeanette Limas, and Yannik Zamboni. But those semifinalists had one big task standing between them and the finale. So what happened in “Concept Store”?

“I had a lot to live up to because I had been put in the middle or almost at the bottom on many occasions,” says “Making the Cut” contestant Georgia Hardinge about how she approached the sixth assignment, “Social Media Content.” “I was like, okay, I need to win something, I need to do something to show that I’m capable of getting to the final.” She did just that, winning the assignment and advancing to the final four. Episode five, “Festival Wear,” was a bloodbath on “Making the Cut,” with outrage from judge Jeremy Scott and the eliminations of both Curtis Cassell and Sienna Li. That left five designers going into episode six, “Social Media Content”: Rafael Chaouiche, Georgia Hardinge, Jeanette Limas, Markantoine Lynch-Boisvert, and Yannik Zamboni. Much to the surprise and delight of all the designers on “Making the Cut,” no one was eliminated in season three, episode four, “One Day, One Team.” So all seven contestants returned to design again in episode five, “Festival Wear”: Curtis Cassell, Rafael Chaouiche, Georgia Hardinge, Sienna Li, Jeanette Limas, Markantoine Lynch-Boisvert, and Yannik Zamboni. “Festival wear has become big business for fashion retailers,” Tim Gunn explains. “Many large brands are creating year-round festival lines. In fact, for the Millennial and Gen-z demographics it’s becoming tangential to resort wear.” We’re talking hippie Woodstock looks, Afropunk, all those wild desert utopia Burning Man costumes. The sky is kind of the limit with this one.

“I was in my head like, okay, where could we go all together? Where we’re wearing similar colors, and where the topic is so clear that nobody misunderstands and ends up in a cohesive collection. So I was thinking about a funeral,” says designer Yannik Zamboni about coming up with the idea for the “One Day, One Team” group assignment on “Making the Cut.” But he knew that a funeral meant using black when he prefers to design in only white, so “I’m gonna make it harder for myself as well.” Watch our exclusive video interview with Zamboni above.

Gabriella Meyer was sent home for her underwhelming “Winter Wear” in episode three of “Making the Cut,” leaving seven designers fighting to be the next great global brand: Curtis Cassell, Rafael Chaouiche, Georgia Hardinge, Sienna Li, Jeanette Limas, Markantoine Lynch-Boisvert, and Yannik Zamboni. But how well could they work together? We found out — for better and worse — in “One Day, One Team.”
Assignment
For the first time on “Making the Cut” the designers had to display teamwork by all working on one team. Together they would create an accessible, cohesive collection where every designer was responsible for one look. Oh, and the timeline for finishing their assignments was shorter than ever. Instead of two weeks, or two days, or one day, they would have a mere seven hours and no help from seamstresses. What could possibly go wrong?

Heidi Klum may have been one of the most famous models associated with Victoria’s Secret, but she says she turned down an invite to be interviewed for Hulu’s “Victoria’s Secret: Angels and Demons.” “They asked me if I wanted to be part of it,” Klum tells me on this week’s “Just for Variety” podcast. “And I was like, ‘If you’re looking for a negative story, you’re barking up the wrong tree because I had the most wonderful time there.’”
Matt Tyrnauer’s three-episode series paints a picture of Victoria’s Secret as a company that was plagued by wide-spread misogyny and sexual misconduct. It also explores former CEO Les Wexner’s disturbing ties to the late child sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein. Klum says she watched the first episode but “hardly anyone I knew was on that show,” she says.

Amazon Studios is merging its Prime Video and Freevee unscripted teams under the oversight of reality TV vet Chris Castallo. Having previously focused on Prime Video fare, Castallo will now oversee unscripted for both outlets and report to Lauren Anderson, who was recently named head of AVOD original content and programming at Amazon Studios.
The move comes following a restructure inside Amazon’s ad-supported video on demand service. Earlier this month, Ryan Pirozzi was named head of Freevee, overseeing the business side of the streaming service, while Anderson was given oversight for programming, which includes development, production, licensing, scheduling, research and strategy for Freevee and Prime Video’s ad-supported Fast linear channels. Anderson and Pirozzi had formerly served as co-heads of content and programming for Amazon Freevee (the ad-supported video on demand service that had been known as IMDb TV).
Castallo previously reported to Marc Resteghini, the US/Global Head of Development at Amazon Studios.

Fresh off a romantic island getaway with her husband and four kids, Heidi Klum is back to work — and remembering her shocking worst date ever.
Appearing on “Jimmy Kimmel Live” on Thursday with guest host Nicole Byer, Klum recalls a Nsfw story from her single days.
“I had one weird date where we went to a movie theatre,” Klum begins her story, noting that her date was holding a large bucket of popcorn. “Which I thought was already strange, like, why do I always have to reach over? Why don’t you reach over?”
“And I’m reaching over and I’m eating the popcorn,” she continues, “and then, all of the sudden, there’s a hot dog in the popcorn — but it was attached. The hot dog that’s still attached.”
Klum describes the incident as “very memorable,” noting that it “never happened again.”
Byer quips, “I could imagine that’s memorable.

Reese Witherspoon’s Hello Sunshine has launched an unscripted unit in the U.K.
The Candle Media-backed studio has appointed former Channel 4 head of features and formats Sarah Lazenby to lead the division as executive VP of unscripted U.K. She will report into Hello Sunshine’s head of unscripted Sara Rea, who joined the studio following the acquisition of her company Skr Productions.
As part of the expansion, Hello Sunshine Unscripted U.K. is currently developing its first production with “It’s a Sin” broadcaster Channel 4.
The move into the U.K., particularly for unscripted, is a sound move for Hello Sunshine, and follows similar drives by companies such as Hillary Clinton and Chelsea Clinton’s HiddenLight Productions, which have similarly been keen to work with the U.K.’s world-leading factual and non-scripted production community.
At Channel 4, Lazenby was responsible for overseeing a large unscripted slate that...

Reese Witherspoon’s Hello Sunshine is headed for Britain. The Candle Media-owned production company is launching an unscripted division in the UK, and is already developing its first production with terrestrial network Channel 4.
Hello Sunshine Unscripted UK will be led by Sarah Lazenby, a former Channel 4 Head of Features and Formats who left the broadcaster last year. While at the British public service broadcaster, she oversaw major titles such as The Great British Bake Off, Jamie Oliver’s programs and formats such as Flirty Dancing and Netflix co-pro Crazy Delicious. More recently she produced HBO’s Emmy-nominated retrospective special Harry Potter 20th Anniversary: Return to Hogwarts.
Lazenby will be Executive Vice President, Unscripted UK and report to Hello Sunshine’s Head of Unscripted Sara Rea. Hello Sunshine last year acquired Rea’s company Skr Productions, which was behind Prime Video’s Heidi Klum and Tim Gunn series Making the Cut.

As Season 3 of “Making the Cut” hits Prime Video Friday, Aug. 19, mentor Tim Gunn tells TheWrap how “Project Runway’s” major success delayed the start of its fellow design competition show.
“[‘Making the Cut’] actually is the show that Heidi [Klum] and I’ve wanted to do for years, but because of the success of ‘Project Runway,’ no one would let us tamper with the format,” Gunn told TheWrap.
Compared to “Project Runway,” which Klum hosted alongside Gunn as the designers’ mentor from 2004 to 2018, Gunn sees the Prime Video series as “a much broader conversation,” which takes designers’ brands and overall potential into account during judging.
