Shōgun, the critically acclaimed historical drama created by Rachel Kondo and Justin Marks, finished its 10-episode run on FX last week. Anna Sawai received acclaim from critics and viewers alike for her portrayal of the tragic Toda Mariko.
The New Zealand-born actress, 31, is expected to be flooded with some good film offers, and it would not be shocking if she got a chance to play a big superhero role at some point. When speaking with THR about her career in Hollywood, Sawai hinted that her big break might have come much sooner.
Anna Sawai as Toda Mariko in Shōgun
She had the opportunity to audition for the role of Katana in Suicide Squad (2016), but she had to pass that up because of her commitment to her J-Pop group, Faky. Fortunately for us, Sawai could still be cast in a wide range of roles that are spiritually related to her Shōgun character.

Anna Sawai is still processing the degree to which her life has changed because of Shōgun, the smash-hit FX show on which she plays Lady Mariko, and as a result of which she has become an Emmy frontrunner (for best actress in a limited or anthology series or a TV movie) and is rapidly making her way towards Hollywood’s A-list.
The New Zealand-born Japanese actress, 31, said as much last week when she recorded an episode of The Hollywood Reporter’s Awards Chatter podcast in front of an audience of film students at Chapman University, some 24 hours after Shōgun’s series finale — or perhaps season finale, given industry chatter that there may be additional episodes, something that Sawai finds exciting.
People who have not yet have caught up to Shōgun might still recognize Sawai from one of her wide variety of past projects. Between 2013 and 2018 she was a member of...

New Zealand-born actress Anna Sawai has been on everyone’s lips with her show-stopping performance as Lady Mariko in the Japanese historical drama Shogun. Sawai’s performance indicates a start to an epic acting career despite only having a few credits to her name. While few, her performances in each role have been incredible from the Monsterverse series, Monarch: Legacy of Monsters and Pachinko. Sawai started acting at 11, starring in a Japanese rendition of Annie. Her first major acting role came in the martial arts film Ninja Assassin a few years later. With a detour into singing that lasted five years, she was drawn back to acting with supporting roles

Welcome to Emmy Experts Typing, a weekly column in which Gold Derby editors and Experts Joyce Eng and Christopher Rosen discuss the Emmy race — via Slack, of course. This week, we revisit the packed limited series race, which has seen three new contenders premiere in the last three weeks.
Christopher Rosen: Hello, Joyce! We’ve circled back to what is arguably the most competitive Emmys category this year: limited series. It feels like as good a time as any to return to my favorite race – particularly with “Shōgun” and Anna Sawai dominating the discourse, as well as the premiere of our dark horse favorite “Under the Bridge.” We talked about both shows this week with our voices, and I must say, it feels heartening — dare I type, Siri pay “Vindicated” – to have been so right about “Shōgun.” We both loved that show way back in February and the response has been off the charts.

Turner Broadcasting and Max alumnus Sandra Dewey has joined “The Morning Show” producer Media Res as chief operating officer.
Dewey will help guide the company’s expansion across scripted and nonfiction content. Media Res, founded in 2017 by former HBO executive Michael Ellenberg, has set out a growth plan on the heels of a recent investment from RedBird Imi, the media-focused fund headed by former CNN and NBCUniversal chief Jeff Zucker.
Dewey had a long tenure as a senior business executive at Turner Broadcasting during the company’s heyday as a cable programming pioneer. Media Res is a busy Los Angeles-based production boutique that is home to Apple TV +’s starry Reese Witherspoon-Jennifer Aniston drama series, as well as buzzy shows such as Amazon Prime Video’s “I’m a Virgo” and the Apple TV + drama series “Pachinko” and limited series “Extrapolations.”

The Handmaid’s Tale’s Elisabeth Moss and Scandal favorite Kerry Washington are going to star opposite one another in a new series for Apple.
The iPhone maker/streamer has, following a bidding war, landed the television adaptation of Araminta Hall’s novel Imperfect Women with a straight-to-series order for the drama from Physical alum Annie Weisman.
Imperfect Women is described by Apple as an “unconventional, psychological thriller examining a crime that shatters the lives of a decades-long friendship of three women.” The series is a “mystery complicated by perspective that explores guilt and retribution, love and betrayal and the compromises we make that alter our lives irrevocably. As the investigation unravels, so does the truth about how even the closest relationships can change over time.”

Japanese actress Anna Sawai’s career was already on a steady ascent in recent years, but FX’s epic samurai series Shōgun has undoubtedly become her breakthrough.
Since appearing in Universal’s F9 (2021) in an ass-kicking supporting part, Sawai has co-starred in a string of big-budget series, including Apple TV+’s Pachinko (2022-) and the Godzilla spinoff Monarch: Legacy of Monsters (2023). Now, Shōgun has been hailed as both her biggest hit and most dynamic dramatic performance to date. The first episode of the lavish period epic racked up 9 million streaming views globally on Disney+ and Hulu when it premiered last month, topping the latest season premieres of The Bear and Fargo — and the buzz has only grown since.
A second TV adaptation of James Clavell’s 1975 best-selling historical novel of the same name — following the popular 1980 miniseries version starring Richard Chamberlain and Toshiro Mifune — Shōgun‘s story follows the intertwined plights of three principal characters,...

Welcome to a new era of "Star Wars," in more ways than one. Today's newly-released trailer for "The Acolyte" has been a long time coming, promising to delve into an older and more unknown period of history in the galaxy far, far away. Set over a century before the prequel movies during the epoch known as The High Republic, the upcoming Disney+ series will cover wholly new ground that fans have never seen before -- at least, those who haven't been keeping up with the various official tie-in novels released over the last few years. But filling in lore gaps in the canon isn't the only reason why this exciting new story should be on our radar, however. The talent involved in this series both in front of and behind the camera immediately sets it apart from any other to this point, although one name stands tall above the rest.

Thomas Vinterberg, the Oscar-winning director of Another Round, is turning to television for his next project, signing on to adapt the fantasy novel The Brothers Lionheart as a limited event series for The Morning Show producers Media Res.
Vinterberg will adapt the beloved children’s book, from Pippi Longstocking author Astrid Lindgren together with Tony and Olivier Award-winning British playwright Simon Stephens (The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime). Both will executive produce the series together with Michael Ellenberg, Lars Blomgren and Lindsey Springer of Media Res, alongside The Astrid Lindgren Company.
While not as well known outside internationally as Pippi Longstocking, Lindgren’s coming-of-age tale of two brothers, Karl and Jonathan Lion, in the mythical land of Nangiyala, and their battle against the evil tyrant Tengil, is a family classic in Scandinavia and has been translated into some 50 languages worldwide.

It has been two years since Jeff Zucker resigned from the top job at CNN over a consensual relationship with a network executive. Since then, he’s headed up RedBird Imi, a joint venture between Gerry Cardinale’s RedBird Capital and Imi, an investment fund backed by the UAE. With a massive private equity war chest behind him, Zucker, 58, has been relentlessly hunting for deals. In a little over a year, he has invested in TV studio and motion picture company Media Res and news site Front Office Sports and just made an audacious bid to buy the U.K.’s Telegraph, provoking an outcry from journalists and politicians. On Feb. 17, Zucker’s firm bought powerhouse producer All3Media (which backed 1917, Fleabag, Squid Game: The Challenge, The Tinder Swindler and Penny Dreadful, among many other movies, docs and shows) for $1.45 billion. The mogul spoke to The Hollywood Reporter shortly after.

Jeff Zucker and Gerry Cardinale’s RedBird Imi has finalized a £1.15 billion ($1.45 billion) deal to acquire production powerhouse All3Media — the largest TV producer in the U.K. and the company behind such shows as reality series Squid Game: The Challenge and films like World War I epic 1917 — from owners Warner Bros. Discovery and John Malone’s cable and telecom giant Liberty Global.
The deal gives the new owner control over a big production business across scripted and unscripted series as well as theatrical movie titles. Earlier this year, RedBird Imi acquired a stake in Media Res, the studio behind the Apple TV+ shows The Morning Show and Pachinko, among other projects, which was founded by former HBO executive Michael Ellenberg.
Launched in late 2022 with a $1 billion war chest backed by RedBird Capital and Abu Dhabi’s Imi, RedBird Imi has the mandate to pursue investments in the news, entertainment and sports sectors.

RedBird Imi, a joint venture investment firm led by Jeff Zucker, has taken a stake in The Morning Show production entity Media Res.
Founded by CEO Michael Ellenberg, a former HBO exec, Media Res also produces another notable Apple TV+ title, Pachinko.
An announcement about the investment said it will “fuel Media Res’ growth as a leading independent studio,” helping it expand in scripted series and also scale its activity in film and non-fiction.
The investment is RedBird Imi’s first in a scripted production outfit. Zucker, who wound down a lengthy run at CNN in 2023, later that year came aboard RedBird Imi, which is owned by private equity firm RedBird Capital and Abu Dhabi-based International Media Investments.
Other investments during the company’s first year include EverWonder Studios, Hidden Pigeon Company and Front Office Sports.

Media Res launched in 2017 as a premium independent studio, pursing the types of shows that Ellenberg was interested in while running drama at HBO.

[This story contains spoilers for Monarch: Legacy of Monsters’ fifth episode, “The Way Out.”]
Monarch: Legacy of Monsters star Anna Sawai has top billing on Apple TV+’s MonsterVerse spinoff series that also includes Kurt and Wyatt Russell. Her starring role is bookended by lead roles on the streamer’s critically acclaimed drama series, Pachinko, and FX/Hulu’s highly anticipated miniseries, Shōgun. Oddly enough, despite Shōgun’s February 2024 release date, Sawai shot Shōgun in Vancouver before Monarch’s own Vancouver shoot, and within 24 hours of wrapping Shōgun, she was already recreating Godzilla’s Golden Gate Bridge sequence from Gareth Edwards’ MonsterVerse starter, Godzilla (2014).
Sawai plays a San Francisco-based teacher named Cate Randa, who’s the granddaughter of John Goodman’s Kong: Skull Island character, Bill Randa. (Outside of Goodman’s flashback in the premiere, Anders Holm plays young Bill on the series.) And with Monarch taking a Rashomon-type approach to Edwards’ 2014 film, Cate and her students ended up being on...

Arvin Chen is to direct “Coolie,” a limited series featuring enslaved Chinese workers in 19th century Cuba.
The eight-part series is the first to emerge from Cathay Film Company, a recent production venture launched by Singapore-based industry veteran Meileen Choo.
In the mid-1800s, when the African slave trade was outlawed throughout the Americas, plantation owners in Cuba instead began trafficking indentured servants from China and other parts of Asia. These, so-called coolies were often treated as slaves, but some integrated into Cuban society and joined the country’s fight for independence from Spain. The provided a low-cost workforce for farms, restaurants, factories and were instrumental in setting up Chinatowns across the world.

It's not often that you see an Apia actor cast as the lead in a movie or TV show, but things are slowly beginning to change. Historically, if an Asian actor was asked to be part of a project, the role was usually a supporting one or fell under an offensive trope. Asian men are still often asked to play the stereotypical nerd, the doctor, or the best friend, but almost never are they cast as the leading man or enviable love interest. But guess what, Hollywood? They can do both, and some of the best Asian actors in Hollywood are doing just that in movies and TV shows, like the critically acclaimed (and Oscar-nominated) films "Everything Everywhere All at Once" and "Minari," as well as hit TV series like "Pachinko," "Squid Game," and "Xo, Kitty."

We just got our first look at Apple TV+'s new Godzilla series. Titled "Monarch: Legacy of Monsters," the series takes place in the aftermath of a battle between Godzilla and the Titans that levels San Francisco (as seen in 2014's "Godzilla" film). The series focuses on two siblings who follow in their father's footsteps to uncover their connection of the secretive Monarch organization. At the center of the mystery is Army Officer Lee Shaw - and in a fun twist, Kurt Russell plays him in the present day while his son Wyatt Russell plays him in the 1950s. The series marks the first time Wyatt and Kurt have worked on the same project since Wyatt appeared as a younger version of his dad in the 1998 movie "Soldier."
Apple described the series as a "dramatic" saga that spans three generations, and on Aug. 17, they released first-look images for the show.

Jackie Chung's real-life relationship status couldn't be more different than that of her character on "The Summer I Turned Pretty." The actor, who portrays divorced author and mother Laurel Park in the Amazon Prime Video series, is happily married to fellow actor Louis Ozawa. The pair go way back, just like Belly and the Fisher boys. Though Chung and Ozawa have kept most details about their romance under wraps, we do know that they met while shooting a New York University graduate short film and have been together for more than a decade. "We did a screen test together," Ozawa told Forbes in 2020, adding, "So basically the first time we met was on camera."
