Magnificent Reel of Real
annisasafanta23 January 2019
It happened I watched it in a stream service, I am swear it is my 2018 sin for not watching this title on cinema. I don't have much on the story, because I wasn't born on Java, so I don't really understand the impact of Sultan Agung. On the other hand, Hanung Bramantyo successfully bring out his collective desire in movie making. This title is one of his best directed despite few flaws. All emotions they created in the movie is such real, the love, the pain, the doubt, the anger. All I can say is, try to look up Hanung like SLB of Bollywood, you'll love his movies, especially in written history.

The origin story of how Islamic values can blend with Javanese culture tradition
jeannefrancoise14 September 2018
Dear movie lovers, I am from Indonesia, so that I want to share my reviews about these Indonesian movie, Sultan Agung. Sultan Agung was one of famous king in Java island in the period of first coming of colonization in 17th century. At that time, people in Indonesia called Nusantara people because they did not have yet the independence. These Nusantara people had been divided into two parts, those who were supporting the white people and those who defended their kingdoms. As many kingdoms in Nusantara, especially the big ones that had existed in Java island, kingdom figures were becoming famous. One of them is Sultan Agung. So this movie tells the story about the Sultan, how he grew up with Islamic values meet Javanese culture blended in his blood and how his unique character had reflected on his leadership to indirectly lead the war against Holland soldiers outside of his kingdom, then this action inspire other nations to do the same thing. This movie also tells us the origin story of how Javanese traditions can meet Islamic values and how they influence each other. At that time, many Islamic scholars take the war against Holland soldiers as the war of religion Islam, so they only have 2 choices, live nobly or die. This spirit is coming from the Sultan himself, then he was the one who had created Javanese calendar with the very close timing with Islamic calendar, for example 1 Muharram Day in Islam world means Islamic New Year, it becomes 1 Suro Day in Javanese time, so that Javanese people who are Muslims can celebrate two things at the same day; to celebrate Islam and Javanese traditional things, that might be prohibited in Islam, for example bringing the flower to the family graveyard. For me, this movie has a very good main story, good cinematographer, shooting location, wardrobe, director, and producer, but sometimes it feels boring, especially on the dialogues. But it's okay and it's still the first movie to tell the untold story of Sultan Agung. I hope there are many historical movies like this in the Indonesian film industry.
