A gritty slice of social realism that has been marketed as something it isn't
mwilson197616 June 2020
BRITISH MADE is the first feature film by Godiva Films, written and directed by Simon Rickards, it follows Daniel (James Knapp), a young man released from prison for his involvement with a far-right nationalist group, as he attempts to rebuild his life and uncover the truth behind his troubled past leading to violent consequences. It's a pretty low budget affair and was marketed as a football hooligan type film which really undersells it, people going into this movie expecting another Danny Dyer type Football Factory movie will be very disappointed. The directors passion for social realism and drama really shines through, it is a grim and pretty depressing drama, and is indebted to British film-makers such as Ken Loach, Mike Leigh, Shane Meadows, Lynne Ramsey and Danny Boyle, who all made very high quality films with low budgets. Written over a two-year period, with the director researching the subject intensively and always trying to base the script on real-life events, the film was selected for many film festivals around the world throughout 2019 and 2020 and won numerous awards. Screenings were held in London and it is available to stream on Amazon Prime video

enjoyable, worth a watch

An enjoyable enough film with a haunting soundtrack throughout and a nice twist to it with regards the long lost girlfriend From an unknown Director and actors it's a job well done on a low budget and it's hoped that there's more to come from the brooding lead.

Not bad

Some decent acting and enough of a story to make it well worth watching but British Made still somehow falls short of being anything more than just a bit 'meh'.

It was all going so well

This film starts so well...great characters, gritty British set film, interesting story arc and then it gets to the last 30 minutes and all that promise is undone as it just becomes silly....shame.

Surprisingly bad...

I normally love a great British film, this film however was extremely disappointing. I honestly thought it was a student film, it has that unexperienced film maker feel, if that is the case then well done! It would be impressive for a student.

I felt it was badly written, acting was confusing and hard to connect with the characters... felt very amateur. A lot of shots over exposed, scenes that were lit weren't lit to a film standard, the overall film could of been improved so much, the storyline had a lot of potential.

awful attempt

This film misleads you with its discription, making you think this is going to be an aggressive, action packed movie but it turned out to be so boring and just cliche. The acting is awful (ameteur), and the storyline is so basic and predictable that the I actually skipped the last 20 minutes because I knew what was going to happen in the end and I was right. You think he's going to be some crazy-tough, aggressive neo nazi bloke, but he ends up being a really skinny, soft teenager attempting very poorly to be constantly angry at everything and its just cringey. Was he like the only option they had for the protagonist or something. The camera angles are awful like the director is a 12 year old making a YoutTube video. And it's such a bad camera it looks like it's been filmed on an iphone 4s.

First Class British Filmmaking

Excellent film from a little known director / writer. Gritty, contemporary and realistic. A gruelling experience in the last 15 minutes. But wholly enjoyable and original.

Dreary and uninspiring
gonflyn17 August 2020
Suspected after 2 minutes it was going to be a complete waste of time. The "soundtrack" pretty much gave that away immediately, a one note drone that started from the get go and carried on throughout the whole film, trying in vain to create some kind of tension or cover up the sheer emptiness of anything engaging or I dont know what. I wanted to jump out the window after an hour and a half of that. The movie was altogether dreary and lifeless with not a single interesting character to care about, it just drolly dragged on and on without meaning and ended nowhere as we knew it would. I would like to say it was depressing but it was too pointless to even be that.

Hard hitting film with a different take...

Warning: Spoilers
Watching this film I had my guard down and expected a simple tale of a reforming ex con but things do take an unexpected turn making me question everything we'd just seen. The film really put me in a different mind set and only clever writing and great performances could achieve that. It's always a pleasure to discover new talent and now I'm looking forward to whatever comes next from the team.

Cracking British film telling the storey of an easily led British lad at the hands of the pillows of the nationalist white supremacy NF . Thoroughly enjoyed the film with the lead role as an up and coming star . Great acting too.

Vintage british social drama's from the 70's & 80's!
JIM_KELLYS_AFRO4 May 2020
I happen to have found this little low budget social drama on my Prime video feed, glad i did as i originally was expecting something with action and yob violence? This is quite dialogue driven that deals with a young man trying to find himself placed back in today's British society, enjoyed it and actually wanted a bit more added to Daniel's path to destruction. You can easily tell some of the acting is a bit amateurish with lack of experience? But the story and direction alone makes it worthwhile to watch especially coming from the very own land that is going through Brexit and a huge change for our future. 5 / 5 . TV
