Too long, sometimes frustrating, but worth a watch
jamie-508177 April 2024
The story follows a down and out, gambling addicted cleaner who accidentally overhears some illegal insider trading and decides to get in on the action. This throws her into a world she doesn't understand and where she is out of her depth - facing up to corporate types, petty debt collectors and dirty gangsters.

The main character is painted as sympathetic, but she's often obnoxious. She cheats, lies, steals, and often ruins every chance she creates herself. Her journey is frustrating to watch, as she regularly brings her friends and family down with her on the way. She is absolutely an antihero, and if you see her that way, I found her quite interesting. I wish her portrayal was more gritty, as it's clear the filmmakers want us to root for her - but often you don't want to.

She's also quite inconsistent - sometimes helpless and hapless, sometimes a strategic genius. From one scene to the next it can be hard to believe she's the same character.

Instead the side characters really are the heart of the show - her kids, estranged husband, friends, colleagues, and even her local shopkeeper show more heart than her, and it's those you mostly care about.

The whole thing is too long and stretched out - it could have been 3 episodes comfortably. The writers create drama to fill in the extra time, which was unnecessary. But I was interested enough in the central dilemma to not be bored.

The story gets increasingly implausible as it goes, but not more than most TV dramas. I still found it entertaining, even when I had to suspend disbelief. The "normal people vs the 1%" dynamic sometimes showed real promise and had interesting things to say, sometimes was a little shallow and patronising.

Overall, I wish it was shorter, and I wish they had embraced the moral ambiguity of the main character more. But I found the core idea compelling, and am glad I watched it. Still better than most things on ITV or Netflix.

Great acting but as the series goes on it becomes more implausible.

Black eye

To the reviewer highlighting a continuity error, suggesting the girl's black eye changes eye from one scene to the next, I say watch again, the first shot was her looking in the mirror lol. Remained her left eye throughout.

Absolute Garbage.
applicationfiller23 January 2019
. I see too much rubbish in TV, as my wife watches it! I try to read. This should be a great drama, given the lead the writers and the slightly different concept. My problem wit most TV is that everything is so unlikely. Trading offices wuld not have cleaners in during the work day - everythng on the screeens are too sensitive. Likewise, PCs and monitors would not be running when the traders are away from their desk, especially at night! How many days did it take to look at the CCTV ?! (just saw that bit).

There is Artisitic Licence, and it is probably a neccessary element of TV dramas, but this is just ridiculous.

If you mssed it on normal TV - DO NOT pay a penny to see it.

Very slow but has promise
Andywa13 January 2019
The concept of this drama is brilliant. A bit different from the usual police drama or rom Com type drivel. My only issue and I will hold off a little until I have watched more is that it's just too slow and the characters are frustrating especially Sheridan Smith! Hopefully the coming episodes will be much better.

Watch it for the lovely Sheridan Smith.
Sleepin_Dragon24 July 2020
A six part series focusing on Sam, a struggling mum, and a cleaner with an addiction.

It is absurd, you need to suspend your disbelief, but it has an important message. Gambling is so often glamorous on TV, smart casinos, lottery wins etc, this shows the true reality of it, the pain, the misery, the lying, affects on family life etc.

Smith is terrific, the character of Sam is diabolical, she's awful, she lies freely, cheats on her friends, and will do anything other than tell the truth. I do see gambling as an addiction, and you truly see its ugly side here.

Some of the characters are a bit stupid, but the message here is an important one.

The one star ratings here are a joke, ignore them, it's not wonderful, but it is a good watch.

Some years back ITV made a drama called Hot Money which starred Caroline Quentin, this is on the same lines.

Watchable for Smith, and the true side of gambling. 7/10.

I like Sam

Warning: Spoilers
I am really annoyed by people who rated this show 1/10 just because they didn't like the protagonist. If they want to see perfect characters with no real issues they seriously should stay away from British TV except for Teletubbies maybe. Seriously go watch Murican TV HIMYM or Superman.

Now I know nothing about stock trade. If the writers didn't do their homework about trading and if this series is like Mr. Robot full of utter bullsh#t then it's a shame because the cast is AMAZING. It would be a waste of a great cast. So. I can't make any comment on that.

On the other hand, the characters are really great. The psychological problems Sam goes through and her struggle with her destructive behavior are very well put.

Don't expect this show to be better call saul or full of genius plot twists or you will be disappointed. In its own course events resolve in ways that will always make you keep in mind it is fiction but this also achieves making the characters almost real. I think there is a tradeoff between having real personalities as characters and how realistic your plot is. This show as well as many other British series I have seen is strong on the characters and a bit loose on having the perfectly realistic plot. Still it is a pretty good plot though.

Overall I like this show. Half of the reason is the actors in it and the other half is how Sam is a very coherent character.

Terrible for so many reasons
rjcwebster14 February 2019
This series was truly, truly awful. It is hard to know where to start, but my biggest gripe (setting aside the plot holes) is that it didn't seem to know what it was trying to say. Sheridan Smith, (who's acting ability I am now seriously starting to question), smirks and heavy-breathes her way through the role, creating a dishonest, and thoroughly unlikable lead character for whom we end up having no sympathy - even when her children leave her. As Smith's character's gambling addiction spirals towards rock-bottom, it would seem the writers had finally plumped for a 'cautionary tale'.approach...only to ditch this in the later stages and adopt an 'underdogs getting one over on the establishment' crime caper. The trouble is, this only works (like say for the Italian Job or Oceans 11) if the audience has actually warmed to the protagonists over the course of the series. By the end I was rooting for Smith's character to be caught and prosecuted, to protect her from others as well as herself. Utter drivel - avoid..

Soapy bubble
Lejink8 March 2019
A highly entertaining, if improbable, 6-part drama on ITV, starring Sheridan Smith as a recently separated single parent, struggling to bring up her two daughters on her low income as an office cleaner in the financial centre of London, as well as managing her growing addiction to gambling, be it lottery scratch-cards, on-line gaming or just going to the local casino to play roulette. Opportunity comes knocking for her however as she becomes aware that an employee at a city stockbroker where she cleans after-hours, who seems to work late and alone every night, is in fact part of a syndicate involved in insider-dealing. With her two work-colleague friends, she sets up a listening device in the dealer's office and uses the information to play the market for the three of them to benefit financially from investing in the hot tips picked up.

The plot thickens however when the threesome's gravy train gets derailed after the crooked dealer is suspended on suspicion of malpractice and Smith decides to move on up by swotting up on the markets and stepping into the offending dealer's shoes as his replacement in the scam. While the idea of a lowly office cleaner carrying off such a caper is somewhat far fetched, it's written and played so well that you go along with the unlikely premise, rooting for Smith and her buddies all the way, especially at the numerous nail-biting moments when it seems her well-laid plans are about to unravel.

There are various background sub-plots including Smith's on-off relationship with her ex-husband, who still cares for her to some degree and is concerned about her gambling addiction, likewise her two daughters, the older one in her mid teens who tries to encourage her mum to attend Gambler's Anonymous classes, the younger infant one driven to petty theft to help her struggling mum, the vulture-like loan-shark constantly badgering Smith for repayment and last but not least the geeky young entrepreneur-inventor she takes in as a lodger whose ability to make home-made listening devices is crucial to the plot.

Sure, a lot of the plot-links are as unlikely as my winning the lottery next week and I'm not sure about the dubious morality of the ending where it seems Smith and her chums are about to continue along similar lines in their criminal ways but with a well-chosen cast all responding to the superior material and smart, non-flashy direction, this was enjoyable contemporary drama which thoroughly entertained my wife and I over its six-week run.

Conflicted
thejdrage1 November 2022
I am conflicted. I think this would have been an entertaining movie if I hadn't just experienced having a "friend" rip me off for thousands - and then lie about it and lie about so many other things too. As a result, I was fascinated at how easily Sam came up with her lies - and how people fell for them. And why. Because when we really care for someone, we don't want to call them flat out exactly what they are: Liars and thieves. We simply cannot believe that someone we love and care about and would do anything for would steal from us and then lie to us while looking us in the eye.

Yes. They will.

So. Do watch it. It's a fascinating study of humanity at it's worst and convincing themselves really is their best.

Warning: Spoilers
Got into this thinking it was 4 episodes, was 6, so gave it a go. The main character was completely immoral, totally unlikable, couldn't believe she stole so much from people and they all just pretty much let it go. The ultimate was the end, complete rubbish, made a load of money then took £14,000 to pay off her debts, and the friends didn't say a thing, leaving them with £2,000 ???? Everyone lived happily ever after, what a load of rubbish. Watched 6 episodes seeing her rip people off and then the last episode she massively does it again and everyone is happy. 1 is generous

Great Concept

First episode and I'm already hooked. It's time the "little people" get a break. Yes, insider trading is illegal, but the a-holes on Wall Street do it all the time and no one says a word.

Don't trust the cleaners
mrdanielkanewilliams16 April 2024
In this series Sheridan Smith's character is an office cleaner called Sam who works in a stock broker's office. One night she over hears an office worker called Blake (Doc Brown) on the phone talking about a company who's shares are about to go up. And that's when Sam and her friend Jess (Jade Anouka) decide to put a listening device in Blake's office so they can listen to all the information about who's shares will go up. During the part where Sam and Jess plant the listening device the series gets intense, but the side plots drag this series out and make me think that this would have worked better as a mini series of 3-4 episodes or a 90-120 minute film.

One side plot that doesn't work is Sam's gambling addiction because this just makes her an unlikeable character, because any money she gets, including money from her ex-husband's Mum that she was supposed to use to get a present for her youngest daughter, she just gambles away.

Other side plots include two about Sam's other daughter (Alice - Kirsty Philipps) who is 15 years old and is dating a 17 year old man despite the fact that Sam and ex-husband (Dave - Matthew McNulty) don't want her to. And another about Alice finding out about her Mum's gambling addiction and trying to help her.

And there is also another side plot about a loan shark called Warren (Neil Maskell) who is constantly chasing Sam for the thousands of pounds that she owes him.

But one of side plots that works well is when Sam tries to make a bit extra money by making her daughter's sleep in the same bedroom so she she has a spare bedroom to sub-let behind her Landlady's back. This works because she lets it out to a guy called Glyn (Roberts Emms) who is a very funny character. One funny thing in particular that Glyn does is develop a crush on Jess after helping her and Sam with the listening device and Sam lies to him and says that they're going to use it to spy on Jess' boyfriend who she thinks is cheating on her.

But even though these side plots do drag the series out I did find some bits of the series intense, especially when Sam has to keep lying to make sure she doesn't get caught. I also found the last episode very intense because Sam has to think fast to stop her whole plan from falling apart. The last episode also leaves the door open for a second series which I would like to see.

Abhorrent to its core.
timrober16 February 2019
Warning: Spoilers
At every turn the lying, cheating, work-shy, law-breaking, thief portrayed by Sheridan is rarely brought to task for anything done wrong. Not only that, but when she gets away with something we are treated to anthemic 'feel good' soul music to reinforce how well she's doing. I couldn't believe what I was watching in the first episode, and only hoping that perhaps the character might 'clean up' their act, but to no avail after 6 episodes. I can't fathom how the creators of this series felt that the character causing a car accident whilst playing with a phone and then then speeding off with absolutely no further comment or repercussion on this act was 'OK'. But of course, that's just the start... we hear the character is a hard-working cleaner but one that spends a lot of her 'working' hours feeding an addiction or breaking into and bugging offices and listening in to conversations. Lying to teachers in front of her children, breaking into and stealing from a private clients home, stealing money from friends and family at every turn, deceiving those closest to her to save face. Again, all of these with little to know comeuppance and often accompanied by "Go-girl!" music. The worst part of all this is the last episode. We are now left with a message that Gamblers Anonymous is 'a dangerous place to go' and really, you don't need it even though you have a crippling addiction. In fact, it alludes that she has solved her addiction problems and the daughter who was desperately trying to get Mum to GA meetings now is proud of her... why? Because she's set up a cleaning business with the sole intent of stealing information from legal and financial companies and committing further crime by leveraging insider trading. But of course everything's OK... because they played more life affirming Aretha-esque music. ITV should be ashamed of this. Sheridan is a thousand times better than this.

Cha-ching
kinnaripatel854 April 2024
It was a rollercoaster ride of entertainment! The character portrayal was on point, weaving a captivating story of gamblers. While there were a few plot holes, it didn't detract from the overall enjoyment. I was hooked from start to finish!

Cleaning Up presents a gripping depiction of the tumultuous world of gambling, offering a compelling narrative that explores the emotional and psychological struggles of its characters. While the film may not be based on a true story, its portrayal of the challenges faced by gamblers feels authentic and emotionally resonant. At the heart of the story is the protagonist, whose journey is marked by a constant battle between addiction and redemption. As we follow the protagonist's descent into the dark depths of gambling, we are drawn into a world filled with high stakes and crushing defeats. Each twist and turn in the narrative is infused with emotion, as the protagonist grapples with their inner demons and struggles to break free from the cycle of addiction. Along the way, we are introduced to a cast of characters who each play a pivotal role in the protagonist's journey, from the loyal friend who stands by their side to the ruthless adversary who threatens to undo everything they've worked for.

Despite the grim subject matter, Cleaning Up is not without its moments of hope and redemption. Throughout the film, we witness the protagonist's unwavering determination to overcome their addiction and rebuild life. Their journey is fraught with setbacks and obstacles, but through sheer resilience and inner strength, they begin to claw their way back from the brink. Along the way, they confront their past mistakes and come to terms with the consequences of their actions, ultimately finding a sense of closure and redemption in the process.

One of the film's greatest strengths lies in its ability to evoke empathy and understanding for its characters. Despite the moral ambiguity of their actions, we can't help but root for the protagonist as they struggle to find their way out of the darkness. Their journey is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit and serves as a powerful reminder that redemption is always possible, no matter how far gone we may seem.

What was the point of this ?
leskenn-201-10805815 February 2019
Warning: Spoilers
If they had done it differently it could have been an entertaining watch. We just needed a cheeky lead that we could take to - but as they wrote it Sam was an awful person. Lying to everyone, ripping off her gullible friends for thousands.

It was no cheery story of the underdogs taking down some elite insider traders - everyone in it was either unlikable or being ripped off by Sam/Nancy.

Massive plot holes too - guessing who would be the developers. Not able to work Excel but suddenly able to download data onto a USB stick from a traders PC in seconds.

And the grand finale - she takes their ill-gotten gains to do what ? Start ringing up some businesses to take her and her two pals on as a super efficient new company ? With no references to take with them.

God forbid there's a next series - if there is she'll be ripping off some poor eastern European cleaners (or the Spanish ? What was that all about ?) and lying to all and sundry.

She should have gone down with Swanny and co and in real life I'm sure she would.

Awful misstep with this one.

Although it's not the best drama ITV have ever proffered I'm thoroughly enjoying it and looking forward to episode 4 tonight. It's gritty, and the gruelling struggle of the working class underdog juxtaposed with London's wealthy elite makes for engaging viewing. The show has a good pace, mounting tension and a funny, relatable and watchable lead played superbly by Sheridan Smith. Im surprised to see so many unfavourable reviews!

Fails on all fronts
andrewrye-065355 February 2019
I was looking forward to this and tolerated a few episodes in the hope it would get better. I like Sheridan Smith but why is she continually smirking regardless of what emotion she is supposed to be having? I feel like she's mailed this performance in. The writing is dire and story line totally unbelievable. We are supposed to believe that she works all night, gets home gets the girls up who have been alone all night, feeds them and gets them to school then goes to another job? When does the poor woman sleep and why is she never tired? I won't go into her getting a stranger (guy) in to board with her two girls while she is away at work. Just put the nail in, there is no way cleaners have time to skulk around and plant recorders and then listen in. They work as a team doing the job as fast as possible and in a team. Two of them going missing would be noticed and they'd be sacked. So that's rubbish too. It's a shame really. Was a good story line, just handled incompetently. A bit of research and forethought may have elicited a higher score than 2 from me.

Poetic Artistic License Ruines Any Credibility
t-d-t-m824 April 2024
I watched the whole series but there's some severe flaws in the show's writing and concept-creation. Like how there is very little CCTV reference despite it being there in that office environment.

That ID checks are properly lapse. That would not happen. The fact that a relatively non-technical person got a usb stick and managed to copy x amount of information and print it on the printers which have a READ HISTORY will not actually happen. DNA is on the USB stick. Jeez!

The IT traders' desks aren't correct. Not enough screens/data. The boss with a heavy accent with a cleaning company not making enough money in CW is incorrect when contractors already run the floors and they are stable operations.

I don't understand how she opened a card in her daughters' names and her ex was able to check the information when it was protected in hers. Not possible.

I don't get how the £14k debt make sense and he kept coming over her house and the school. Like a pro would not waste that amount of time and he would be with other people.

The acting was ok and it was ok popcorn drama with a nice ending but it just so unrealistic. So much poetic license with omitting actual integritiy on trading life. Please ask traders for consultancy roles before writing these scripts. It costs £50 to register a new business not £2,000. I'm a bit confused as how the three of them thought they could cold-call trading companies who already have contracted cleaning firms installed.

Oh well. 4/10.

Hateful Protagonist
sdsmith-6289210 April 2024
Not the worst series I've ever watched but completely ruined for me by the morally bankrupt, hateful protagonist played by Sheridan Smith (In fairness - actually played very well).

The combination of the complete lack of any sort of redeeming story arc fornthe main character & seemingly endless loyalty / forgiveness by her friends & family made me want to kick a hole through my telly.

Also whoever wrote the final act needs to go to a maths class - unless we're expected to believe that her best friend is willing to just write off substantial sums of money to help her gambling addict friend pay off her debt with the vague hope of a potential future pay off from a quite frankly idiotic business / scam.
