A month into the 2022-23 TV season, the crop of first-year network series have fit in pretty well with their surroundings. Which is to say, there may not be many breakout hits, but nor are there any shows really dragging down their respective networks.
The 13 shows that debuted in the first four weeks of the season are collectively averaging 4.06 million viewers per episode after a week of Nielsen-measured delayed viewing (i.e., not including streaming). That’s about 19 percent lower than the average for all network primetime shows (excluding news and sports) of 4.99 million viewers, but good portion of that discrepancy comes from two of the newcomers — imports Professionals and Family Law on The CW — being the bottom two shows of the fall so far.

In the debut season of Professionals, coming October 11 to The CW, things get explosive quickly in this combustible drama after billionaire futurist Peter Swann’s (Brendan Fraser) new medical data satellite blows up at launch. A suspicious Swann hires security operative Vincent Corbo (Smallville’s Tom Welling) to sniff out his enemies. “As Corbo and his team of veteran security professionals investigate the rocket disaster, they expose a lethal conspiracy of Swann’s corporate rivals, corrupt government officials, and a shadowy crime syndicate — all working to destroy Swann and take control of his tech empire,” the official logline teases. “Worse, Corbo must also contend with a rogue Europol agent (Ken Duken) who is hellbent on busting him for past sins.” Here’s why this new CW action series will hit the high-octane mark. Everyone’s a suspect While Corbo and his team are loyal to their employers, allegiances can shift quickly.

The CW will stay with its usual premiere strategy for the start of the 2022-23 season.
The network announced fall dates for its primetime lineup, and as usual most series will debut in October, a couple weeks after the big four broadcasters roll out most of their shows. One big exception for The CW is Stargirl, whose third season will debut Aug. 31 and bridge the summer and fall.
The rest of the slate — which features prequels to Supernatural (The Winchesters) and Walker (Walker: Independence) and the return of All American, plus a handful of lower-cost imports — will premiere starting Oct. 2 with Canadian dramas Family Law and Coroner. Kung Fu will pair with Stargirl beginning on Oct. 5, and Walker — the network’s most watched show on air in 2021-22 — and its prequel debut the following night.
All American and spinoff All American: Homecoming arrive on Oct.

It’s all change at The CW after the youth-skewing broadcaster unveiled its fall 2022/23 schedule.
It will be a transitional year for the network, which downsized the number of original series that airs, and this is reflected in its schedule.
The big headlines include the final season of Riverdale is moving to midseason along with its Tuesday night sibling The Flash and will be replaced by new series Supernatural prequel The Winchesters and international acquisition Professionals. Nancy Drew is also moving out of the fall, where it has aired on Friday nights, also shifting to midseason.
The third season of Stargirl will move out of the summer and will be placed on Wednesdays in the fall alongside Kung Fu, which had previously aired in midseason.
Franchise nights include a double header all All American and its All American: Homecoming spinoff on Mondays and Walker and spinoff Walker Independence on Thursdays.

When the dust settled after a frantic day today, the CW was left with 11 original scripted series — new and returning — on tap for next season. That is down from 19 (including Stargirl whose future is unclear) picked up for the 2021-22 season last year.
While there is contraction across the board on linear networks, the drop at the CW is significant and follows years of expansion that resulted in the network adding two extra nights of original programing on Sundays and Saturdays and also years of the CW rubber-stamping its scripted portfolio with the vast majority of series automatically returning regardless of their ratings performance.
That all came to an end this year, ahead of the CW’s pending sale to Nexstar, which is expected to close in the next few weeks. Only the strongest ratings performers made the cut, and there were a slew of cancellations, including same painful ones...

The CW has expanded its slate of scripted acquisitions, picking up one-hour Canadian drama series “Family Law.” Entertainment One (eOne) previously secured international distribution rights for the series, which stars Jewel Staite, Victor Garber, Zach Smadu and Genelle Williams. Dan Loewy, eOne’s executive vice president of sales, brokered the deal.
“Family Law,” produced by Seven24 Films and Lark Productions for Corus Entertainment’s Global, follows lawyer and recovering alcoholic Abigail Bianchi (Staite) as she attempts to put both her personal and professional life back together. As part of her probation, she is forced to work alongside her estranged father Harry (Garber), practicing family law for the first time. Additionally, she must create new relationships with her half-brother Daniel (Smadu) and half-sister Lucy (Williams), whom she’s never met.
“The result is a dysfunctional family law firm operating to help other families with their own dysfunction,” the logline reads.

New York investment firm Kkr began its remarkable German buying spree in 2019. When it was done, one of the world’s biggest film and TV markets looked dramatically different. The ambitious studio it created, Leonine, is an accumulation of companies, including film and TV powerhouse Tmg, film distributor Universum, Dark producers Wiedemann & Berg—one of Germany’s leading TV production labels—and multiple factual indies.
Last year, the company got further investment from pan-European media entity Mediawan Alliance (which is backed by Kkr and French investment firm MacSf), then they moved into a new Munich HQ and launched a TV sales business with the 10-part international action series Professionals, starring Brendan Fraser. This week, Mediawan and Leonine announced their acquisition of a controlling stake in UK TV company Drama Republic.

As a most unusual holiday season begins, it’s going to be harder for streaming services to demand our attention. With its new releases for December 2020, Amazon Prime is trying its best anyway.

Hulu’s biggest original title this month is undoubtedly The Hardy Boys. This adaptation of the classic boy detective novels is aimed at younger audiences and will premiere on Dec. 4. Then, near the end of the month, Hulu is bringing a new season of a show that is decidedly not for younger audiences. Season 9 of the very funny and very Canadian Letterkenny arrives on Dec. 26.
Hulu also has some recent movies of note coming in December including Amy Seimetz’s diabolical She Dies Tomorrow on Dec. 4 and children’s movie The Secret Garden on Dec.

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas, as the various streaming services are stocking their libraries with some great new titles this December to keep us going through the festive period. When it comes to Hulu, the Disney-owned platform is adding a few holiday-related movies and TV shows, but is mostly taking the track of stuffing itself full of classic films that the whole family can enjoy.
This includes a bunch of the best James Bond pics ever made, like GoldenEye, The Spy Who Loved Me, Goldfinger and, the one that kicked it all off, Dr. No. That would be a perfect watch to honor Sean Connery, who sadly passed away earlier this year.
Other action movies you might want to check out this December, meanwhile, include The Hurt Locker, The Fifth Element, 2003’s Hulk and the two “Tom Hanks as Robert Langdon” flicks, The Da Vinci Code and Angels & Demons.

Brendan Fraser Actioner ‘Professionals’ Finds Global Distribution With Rainmaker Content (Exclusive)
Rainmaker Content has picked up worldwide distribution rights from German studio Leonine for Brendan Fraser-starring action series “Professionals.” The project, which was completed during the global pandemic, will be shopped to buyers at next month’s virtual Mipcom market.
Commissioned by Nordic Entertainment Group (Nent Group) for streamer Viaplay, the cast includes Fraser (“Trust”), Tom Welling (“Smallville”), Elena Anaya (“Wonder Woman”), Saïd Taghmaoui (“John Wick 3”), Ken Duken (“Inglorious Basterd”), Lisa Loven Kongsli (“Force Majeure”) and August Wittgenstein (“The Crown”).
The 10-part series stars Welling as hardened former counterintelligence officer Captain Vincent Corbo, who is hired by billionaire futurist Peter Swann (Fraser) and his fiancée, medical visionary Dr. Graciela “Grace” Davila (Anaya), to investigate the explosion of an advanced medical satellite. What Corbo and his team discover, however, is that a combination of Swann’s business rivals, corrupt government officials and a shadowy crime syndicate could be behind the attack.

Exclusive: In a competitive situation, German major Leonine has won rights to recently announced Jason Statham-Guy Ritchie spy thriller Five Eyes, marking the first major deal to go down during Toronto’s virtual market.
The splashy pre-sale, in the high seven figures, marks one of Leonine’s most lucrative acquisitions to date. There are a number of other territory deals on the table for the movie, which we hear is being budgeted in the $60M+ range, making it one of the biggest packages on sale this week. The high demand is good news for an independent sector which is still trying to get back on its feet after being hit hard by coronavirus.
STX is selling international and producing and financing with Bill Block for Miramax. The former will also release in U.S., UK and Ireland.
