"The Dragon Prince" has quickly grown into a clear spiritual successor to "Avatar: The Last Airbender," an animated show with a vast and complex world and mythology, as well as an epic scope that helped it become one of the best fantasy stories on TV, including live-action.

The Captain Fall, described by its makers as “The Love Boat meets Ozark meets The Truman Show,” will release on Netflix in July.
Jon Iver Helgaker and Jonas Torgersen developed, wrote, and executive produced Captain Fall, an upcoming adult animated comedy series. They also co-created the program with Joel Trussell. Trussell is also an executive producer.
Captain Fall was initially presented as a live-action program, according to Helgaker and Torgersen, but Netflix decided it would be more suited to the animation format.
They recognized that transitioning from live-action to animation was difficult, and they thanked Netflix for surrounding them with a staff of cartoon professionals. And, based on the trailer, they’ve managed to keep the absurdist tone they established with Norsemen.

The CG-animated fantasy TV series "The Dragon Prince", created by Aaron Ehasz and Justin Richmond, now titled "The Dragon Prince: Mystery of Aaravos", streams new Season Five episodes July 2023 on Netflix:
"...the continent 'Xadia' is rich in magic derived from six primal sources: the Sun, the Moon, the Stars, the Earth, the Sky and the Ocean. Centuries ago, the dragons, elves, and humans of Xadia lived in peace.

This article spoils a great joke from "Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves." Proceed with caution!
After "Game of Thrones" inspired a wave of fantasy projects seeking to replicate the tone of HBO's dark, gritty, depressingly violent fantasy series, it's almost surprising when we get a new fantasy TV show or film that remembers you can have fun with the genre. This is why the scene where the harfoots sing a little walking song in "The Rings of Power" is so special and heartfelt; why "The Dragon Prince" bringing epic fantasy to young audiences is so important; and why "The Legend of Vox Machina" capturing the chaos and silly energy of tabletop RPG sessions makes for such an enjoyable experience.
This is to say, there were many ways "Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves" could have failed miserably. It could have been too meta like the "D&d" episode of "Community,...

Fantasy is all the rage on television. Sure, the genre has been popular before, and each decade has given us hugely influential and fantastic stories of magic and fantastical creatures, from "Xena: Warrior Princess" to "Buffy the Vampire Slayer." But when "Game of Thrones" exploded onto the scene with a mature, gory, politically charged fantasy story, it kickstarted a fantasy TV race, forcing every studio and streaming service to run and make their own fantasy epic, no matter how much they had to pay for it.
Meanwhile, animation has always been at the forefront of fantasy television. There were Saturday morning cartoons like "Dungeons & Dragons" and "He-Man," shows like "Gargoyles" that focused more on worldbuilding and sequential storytelling, and also "Dragon Age: Absolution" and "The Dragon Prince," which deliver the kind of epic fantasy storytelling we commonly only see on the big screen.
And then there's "The Legend of Vox Machina.

We're going through somewhat of a golden age for fantasy on the screen. After the '80s saw an explosion of fantasy movies — some of them zany and unserious, others the exact opposite — the success and acclaim of "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy on the big screen and of "Game of Thrones" on TV has created a race to find the big new fantasy epic, e.g. the next sword and sorcery tale that can captivate audiences.
On the small screen, there's "The Witcher," "House of the Dragon," and "The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power" fighting for live-action dominance, and even animation has "The Legend of Vox Machima," "Dragon Age: Absolution," and "The Dragon Prince" offering high fantasy epics for a variety of different audiences.
Now, Paramount+ wants to join the fantasy race, and they're rolling the dice on a live-action series based on the granddaddy of fantasy games,...

Nickelodeon’s “Avatar: The Last Airbender” started airing in February 2005, over four years before James Cameron’s “Avatar” opened in theaters and began its run to becoming the highest-grossing film of all time worldwide with 2.9 billion (unadjusted for inflation). And yet, Nickelodeon was blocked from naming the animated series simply “Avatar” because Cameron already had the rights to the title. Fans have often wondered if a connection between the two titles existed, and now they have their answer courtesy of animator Giancarlo Volpe, who directed 19 episodes of the Nickelodeon series.
“In 2004 we learned that we had to change the name of our show from ‘Avatar’ to ‘Avatar: The Last Airbender’ because James Cameron already had the rights to a movie called ‘Avatar,'” Volpe wrote on Twitter. “Now the sequel is called ‘The Way of Water.’ If part 3 is called ‘The Firebending Masters,’ we riot.”

(Welcome to My Most Ridiculous Note, a series of interviews in which animators talk about the weirdest and funniest notes they received from studio executives.)
Well folks, this is a special occasion. For a while now, we've been publishing interviews with animators who worked on some of the most beloved cartoons of the '90s and '00s, exploring what went into making those stories stand apart from their contemporaries, from the Christmas episode of "Hey Arnold" to the classic "Nosferatu" joke in "SpongeBob SquarePants."
We've also explored the bizarre, over-the-top notes that studio executives, as well as Standards & Practices folks, have given to animators. There have been stories of ridiculous notes, sensible ones, and everything in between, but this interview series has (understandably so) focused on the side of the animators who try to get their work out and are met with some roadblocks. It is easy to understate how monumental James Cameron's "Avatar" was when it was first released. Not only was the film a phenomenal and unparalleled box office success, but it also presented a vast and immersive world that felt believable, that was rich in detail and lore. Sure, the impressive CGI helped make the Na'vi feel real, but it was the environments, the fantastical landscapes, the different flora and fauna, and the varied creature designs that sold the idea that Pandora was a real place with history, cultures, and peoples — and it worked. It worked so well, in fact, that there were reports of people suffering depression after watching the film upon finding out that they could not actually travel to the real Pandora.
Enough has been said about the derivative plot of "Avatar" and how much it resembles other stories and movies, but the real magic trick James...

While everyone was fighting over which live-action fantasy show is the best — the one with the rings and the steamy hot sexual tension, or the one with the incest and the dragons that are basically nuclear weapons — the conversations tended to forget that there is another fantasy epic coming out this fall, one with elves and dragons and political scheming of its own.
That's right: Now that the first season of both "House of the Dragon" and "Rings of Power" are over, it's time for the animated series "The Dragon Prince" to shine. A sort of spiritual successor to "Avatar: The Last Airbender" (in craft and tone more than story), "The Dragon Prince" hasn't reached the level of popularity of that Nickelodeon show, but is just as compelling. The show has a vast world that feels lived-in, with a deep and complex mythology, phenomenal production designs, and fascinating characters.

Netflix’s Geeked Week — a five-day virtual fan event which began last year to premiere exclusive news from the streamer — released a trailer for its upcoming content and announced a new set of hosts for this year’s festivities, taking place June 6-10.
The trailer, narrated by David Harbour of “Stranger Things,” promises new footage and information about titles like “The Sandman,” based on the 1990s DC Comics of the same name and starring Tom Sturridge, Gwendoline Christie and Kirby Howell-Baptiste. Chicago – The Oscars are this upcoming Sunday, March 27th, and one of the great performances of the year – nominated for Best Actress – is Jessica Chastain as Tammy Faye Bakker in “The Eyes of Tammy Faye.” The producer of the film is Gigi Pritzker.

“The Eyes of Tammy Faye” is remarkable because of Chastain, who portrays the infamous televangelist from college age to advanced middle age (with the use of prosthetics). The film is a balanced and nuanced story of Tammy Faye, making significant commentary on the state of America and religion during her reign of influence. The ending of the film is an artistic use of cinema – by director Michael Sholwalter – and Jessica Chastain simply kills it.

Photo: X-Men The Anime/Netflix Marvel Anime, a project that consisted of four separate anime series and two direct-to-video films featuring different Marvel characters, was a collaboration between Marvel and Madhouse, the latter of which being a Japanese animation studio known for producing a number of prominent anime including Death Note, season 1 of One Punch Man, and Satoshi Kon’s Paprika (which would be a major inspiration for Christopher Nolan’s Inception). It initially aired in 2011, the same year that Thor and Captain America: The First Avenger premiered in theaters, but didn’t have the same popularity as its other Marvel peers for a number of reasons--a major contributor to its relative obscurity was the fact that it aired on G4, a subscription television network that was quickly on its way to closure. Known most widely for their program Attack of the Show!, which would launch the career of Olivia Munn,...

Photo: 'Adventure Time'/HBO Max It was two years ago on September 3, 2018, that Adventure Time aired its final episodes on Cartoon Network. Since it first debuted in 2010, the show would go on to become one of the most popular and influential shows not just on the network but for TV cartoons in general. And despite being aimed at children, over the course of eight years, ten seasons, and 283 episodes it has garnered a huge and devoted adult fanbase thanks to its imaginative visuals, offbeat sense of humor, and genuine depth. The show’s premise is quite simple: set in the post-apocalyptic and magical Land of Ooo, we follow a young human boy named Finn (Jeremy Shada) and his shape-shifting dog, best friend, and adoptive brother Jake (John Dimaggio) as they roam the land in search of adventure, rescue princesses, and just be as helpful as possible to their friends, neighbors and other inhabitants of Ooo.

Photo: 'Animaniacs'/Hulu In recent years, TV reboots and revivals have been all the rage. We’ve seen the returns of The X-Files, Full House (as Fuller House), Will & Grace, Twin Peaks, DuckTales, Charmed, Murphy Brown, Dynasty, and Queer Eye just to name several. And while they’ve been a mixed bag when it comes to reviews and viewership, with some being more successful than others, there are still many more reboots in the works for years to come. Now add Animaniacs onto that list. And fittingly, it references (in song) all of the above shows by the end of the first episode. After 22 years off the air, the much-beloved animated comedy returns with all-new adventures for the Warner brothers (and Warner sister) and Pinky & The Brain on Hulu. Also along for the ride: copious amounts of wacky slapstick comedy, meta-humor, pop culture references, and some political satire. And...
