For most horror franchises, a decent fifth film seems to be harder to find than a Necronomicon and usually about as dumb as the guy who’d read it out loud. According to those who have seen Evil Dead Rise (now playing in theaters!), however, it looks like the franchise is now home to the rare fifth entry that actually rules. Hail to the King, baby.
It shouldn’t come as a big surprise to Evil Dead fans because this franchise doesn’t miss. Introducing time travel? No problem. Remake? Kicks ass. Fifth sequel curse? Come get some.
Now, let’s take a look at a handful of other fifth entries that have enjoyed that same rarified air. Here are in no particular order some of my favorite fifth horror movies….

Exclusive: Cassady McClincy (The Walking Dead), Dempsey Bryk (Willow), Lucy Walters (Power) and Royce Johnson (Jessica Jones) are set to lead The Snare, an indie dramatic thriller marking the feature directorial debut of Merlin Camozzi.
The film, which recently wrapped production in Schenectady, NY, centers around Dani (McClincy), a straight-a student from the wrong side of the tracks, who has worked toward an academic scholarship for years. When she’s busted with a small amount of drugs, the police pressure her to become an informant, forcing her to choose between the people she most loves and the future she’s worked so hard to create.

The Canadian Screen Awards has unveiled nominations for the national film and TV prize-giving, and the CBC civil rights drama The Porter leads the film and TV field with 19 mentions in all, including for best small-screen drama.
The first Canadian drama series from an all-Black creative team, which also streams on BET+, centers on the lives of Black train porters and their families as they launch North America’s first Black labor union in the 1920s.
The TV categories, voted on by around 3,000 Canadian industry insiders, also sees the CBC series Detention Adventure and Sort Of – a Peabody award-winning show about a gender fluid young Muslim in Toronto played by Bilal Baig — nab 15 nominations each in an awards show shaping up to be a major showcase for people of color.
That follows Canadian film, and TV industry efforts to ensure diversity and inclusivity in the country’s indie production sector and prize-giving process.

The future of The CW is beginning to take shape.
The broadcast network has renewed its drama All American for a sixth season in 2023-24. The pickup is the first since local TV giant Nexstar acquired a 75 percent stake in The CW and hired former Pop TV head Brad Schwartz as entertainment president.
All American has consistently turned in some of the better ratings for the network: This season, it’s the top show on The CW among adults 18-49 in Nielsen’s seven-day ratings and ranks fourth in total viewers. The network also says it had the largest cross-platform audience on The CW in the 2021-22 season.
“Over the last five seasons, All American has established itself as one of the all-time CW flagship franchises,” Schwartz said in a statement. “All American is not only the network’s youngest series, but also the strongest performer when combining all our platforms.

East New York and NCIS: Los Angeles benefited from airing earlier than usual.
With The Equalizer in encore mode, East New York Season 1 Episode 5 soared to 5.7 million total viewers and a 0.5 rating.
The total viewer tally marks a series high for the freshman drama.
NCIS: Los Angeles followed with 4.9 million viewers and a 0.4 rating, also perking up to a season-high in viewership.
Over on ABC, Celebrity Jeopardy (3 million/0.3 rating), Celebrity Wheel of Fortune (3.1 million/0.3 rating), and The Rookie (3.4 million/0.3 rating) all lost some steam in the demo.

CBS revamped its Sunday line-up this season, and the numbers have so far been encouraging.
The Equalizer drew 6.7 million viewers and a 0.5 rating last night, while freshman East New York (5.5 million/0.4 rating) picked up some steam in viewers.
However, the demo was down a bit.
NCIS: Los Angeles returned with 4.2 million viewers and a 0.4 rating.
While the show is down, it is airing in the 10 p.m. slot on the night for the first time.
The show also improved on S.W.A.T.'s performance in the slot last season.
ABC's revamped Sunday continued to drop, with Celebrity Jeopardy (3.4 million/0.3 rating), Celebrity Wheel of Fortune (3.1 million/0.3 rating), and The Rookie (3 million/0.3 rating) all down.
Fox's animated shows were up thanks to a football lead-in.
The Simpsons (3.2 million/1.0 rating), The Great North (2 million/0.6 rating), Bob's Burgers (1.7 million/0.6 rating), and Family Guy (1.7 million/0.5 rating).

The CW entered the conversation Sunday with a series debut and a series debut.
Family Law Season 1 Episode 1 kicked off with 313,000 viewers and a 0.0 rating in the demo.
Given that The CW is relying on cheaper imported programming as part of a push to become profitable, this might be enough to stick around.
The series has already been renewed for a third season in Canada, but the test will be in whether CW wants to keep the show.
Before Family Law, Coroner returned with 410,000 viewers and a 0.0 rating.
The numbers for CBS are likely to change because of late starts, but here goes:
60 Minutes had 8.9 million viewers/1.0 rating, while The Equalizer managed 6.4 million/0.5 rating/
The premiere of East New York managed 4.3 million/0.4 rating.
Over on ABC, Celebrity Jeopardy (3.4 million/0.3 rating) and Celebrity Wheel of Fortune (3 million/0.3 rating) were both down, while The Rookie (2.8 million/0.3 rating) was steady.

The fall premiere crush abates somewhat in the coming week, but the Sept. 28-Oct. 4 period still features more than a dozen broadcast debuts — including that of last season’s biggest new comedy, Ghosts. The final run of The Walking Dead and a significantly recast Saturday Night Live are also on tap.
Below is The Hollywood Reporter‘s rundown of premieres, returns and specials over the next seven days. It would be next to impossible to watch everything, but let THR point the way to worthy options for the coming week. All times are Et/Pt unless noted.
The Big Show
Ghosts has quickly become an anchor comedy for CBS, breaking out in its first season and becoming the second most watched comedy on TV behind Young Sheldon. It also built a devoted fanbase for the show’s deep ensemble and warmhearted approach to its characters.

French production and distribution firm Oble is to handle international licensing of Canadian hit drama series “Aller Simple” or “No Return.”
Produced by French-Canadian firm Sphere Media, the six-episode psychological thriller premiered on prime-time earlier this year in Canada and has been a hit with critics and audiences. It plays on Noovo, where it has been the most watched drama in the channel’s history, and is available before linear broadcast via subscription on Crave TV.
Written by Annie Pierard, Bernard Dansereau and Etienne Pierard-Dansereau, who all previously worked on Sphere’s “Epidemie” (aka “The Outbreak”), the show sees six complete strangers; a former policeman, an art-dealer, a retired teacher, a marketing director, a criminal lawyer and a businesswoman, en-route to a reclusive billionaire’s home when their helicopter makes an emergency landing deep in the forest. Having survived intact, they stumble across a fishing camp. But disturbing incidents suggest...

Exclusive: Sarah Podemski (Reservation Dogs) and Rosa Blasi (The Thundermans) have signed on to star alongside Andrew Dice Clay and Jordan Johnson-Hinds in Quiver Distribution’s basketball drama Warrior Strong, which Shane Belcourt (Red Rover) is directing from Dan Gordon’s (Wyatt Earp) script.
The film currently in production in Canada centers on basketball protege and egocentric Bilal Irving (Johnson-Hinds), who is asked by school principal Jules (Podemski) to serve as the assistant coach of his former high school team, the Dumont Warriors, alongside Coach Avery Schmidt (Clay). Bilal subsequently learns that true coaching involves far more than simply teaching the game. The question is, will this rag-tag team of misfits have what it takes to put aside their differences and become Warrior Strong?
Blasi will play Vicki, who runs the local diner and slowly helps Coach Schmidt out of grieving for his deceased wife, prompting him to move on with a new relationship.

For the first time since news of his sudden exit broke last week, former Superman & Lois star Jordan Elsass has shed some light on his decision to leave the show after two seasons.
“It’s been a tough few weeks, as you might imagine, with everything going on with the show,” Elsass says in a new video recorded for a fan on Cameo. “It’s sad, it’s a real shame. I know that I was pumped for Season 3, for sure, but what are you going to do? Anyway, mental health is definitely 100-percent priority. It’s pinnacle. It’s got to take precedence.

The 1980s were a very dangerous time for the younger generation onscreen. Any teen or twenty-something movie character in the slasher genre of the era was pretty much guaranteed to get the chop. 1989 slasher gem Hell High is a case in point – no sooner have the credits rolled heads have started rolling. Or rather, a delinquent biker tears the head off a young girl’s plastic dolly in a rage – the little girl is not happy, and the biker and his girlfriend end up impaled on iron spikes.
To celebrate the release of Hell High on Special Edition Blu-ray, and Limited Edition O-card Blu-ray, from Arrow Video, here are eight more ‘80s slashers featuring everything from terrorising twins to killer mascots via masked, axe-wielding psychopaths.
Blood Rage (1987)
Twins Todd and Terry seem like sweet boys, that is, until one of them takes an axe to the face of a fellow patron at the local drive-in.

The CW is the latest network to confirm when its fall schedule will get underway.
The young-skewing network has confirmed that Stargirl Season 3 will actually get a late summer bow, with the superhero drama set to return Wednesday, August 31.
The series has had a long time off the air, so fans will be happy to know there's an end in sight for the hiatus.
In true CW fashion, the rest of its fall schedule will play out in October.
Canadian import Family Law is set to premiere on October 2, followed by the debut of Coroner Season 4.
As the network's future is up in the air, it is looking at cheaper offerings in terms of content, and imported shows like above are a way to keep that strategy going.
Kung Fu Season 3 will launch Wednesday, October 5.
Walker Season 3 gets underway on Thursday, October 6, followed by the series debut of spinoff Walker: Independence.

The CW will stay with its usual premiere strategy for the start of the 2022-23 season.
The network announced fall dates for its primetime lineup, and as usual most series will debut in October, a couple weeks after the big four broadcasters roll out most of their shows. One big exception for The CW is Stargirl, whose third season will debut Aug. 31 and bridge the summer and fall.
The rest of the slate — which features prequels to Supernatural (The Winchesters) and Walker (Walker: Independence) and the return of All American, plus a handful of lower-cost imports — will premiere starting Oct. 2 with Canadian dramas Family Law and Coroner. Kung Fu will pair with Stargirl beginning on Oct. 5, and Walker — the network’s most watched show on air in 2021-22 — and its prequel debut the following night.
All American and spinoff All American: Homecoming arrive on Oct.

The CW is the fifth and final broadcast network (following Fox, ABC, CBS and NBC) to unveil its fall schedule, setting premiere dates for more than a dozen new, new-ish and returning series.
DC’s Stargirl is first out of the gate with a late-August return, followed by the network’s typical October rollout of series including its top-rated drama, All American, and its most-watched series, Walker. “Fresh” fare meanwhile includes the Supernatural and Walker prequel spinoffs, and a couple of acquired series.
