A Great Documentary
lmw-9800512 November 2018
Dinesh D'Souza is known for his Great documentaries. He does much research and vetting of facts. Death of a Nation exposes the big lie of The Left. I see that there are many reviews that give a one star and call this documentary rubbish. Obviously these are people "on The Left" that do not want the truth to be known. I believe that many of these people did not take the time to watch This Great documentary. It's a Great History lesson with indisputable facts.

I'm not a Democrat
supermestizo4 August 2018
I'm not a Democrat. Looked into this movie because it was suggested. It's def a pro-right propoganda piece aimed at giving talking point tools. Problem is in the truth. I don't disagree that Dems were for slavery, however, that changed in 1967... Also see history of Strom Thurmond changing parties. Also, the use of footage of liberals losing their minds when Trump was elected was not compared to what happened on the right when Obama was elected. So a lot of credibility was list for me there. Most users reviews say that there is factual, reviewable evidence in this film. I did research only using AP, Snopes, Reuters, PBS, and Politifact (top news sources) to find that it either didn't exists on those sites or it was false. This there is such a low rating from me. Def well done in regards to a rally piece for ant propaganda. You can insert on name or figure, change some words and the target group will cry "It's Truth!" This is why I gave it more than one star. There were some truths, but it is true for both sides. DNC is corrupt, and so is RNC. Movie and users back idea that right is painted as enemy and left good guys. I agree with that, however I believe they are both the Imperisl Empire (star Wars), as the reason for either is the same. Rebellion lies in true libertarians, progressive movement, true conservatives (not GOP), and sincere green party members.

Feel constantly being brainwashed during the show
shantiandd3 August 2018
Warning: Spoilers
I went to see the movie without knowing what the movie was all about. After the movie, all I feel was someone tried to brainwash me... probably because the entire movie was just trying to blame everything on the democrats. I understand that there are a lot of mis-blaming on the republican side. No one deserve to take all those cr+p they don't commit. But come on.... as a grow up person, we all know there are problems on both sides. As they go extreme, none of them is good for the people of the country, which is why they need to flight and keep the balance. If this movie only targets republican as the audience, sure, I think it does its job properly. However, if the movie tries to convince the general public, it fails. BTW, I don't team up on either side.

Would Legit Be Such A Good Satire
vaultoverseer_1520 August 2021
Death of a Nation is another one of D'Souza's movies that is so poorly made that it has no chance of persuading anyone who isn't feverishly in love with his opinions. I don't like writing about politics on imdb, that's not what this platform is for, but to me this movie is just so poorly made that I don't even need to talk about why his points are bad and wrong. That comes down to two issues.

1. The ridiculous over-emotional production. Now, I get that this is really important to Dinesh, but this movie does not need to be extreme as it is. Constantly music is blaring in every scene to indicate the emotion you are meant to feel. The evil lefties come on, the imperial march starts playing as we fear the end of everything. Then Trump comes on, and we get uplifting country sounds to remind us that Trumps is A GOSHDARN 'MERICAN. I don't mind using music but when you really want us to feel something in a documentary, that's when you turn the music off and just show us raw interviews, footage etc. We see Dinesh exploring the city, desperate to discover the truth. Just watching the movie you get a clear sense of narcissism, as Dinesh not only talks about himself in great detail but in lots of self congratulation. But the real highlight is the Nazi subplot. Someone thought to put in third rate Hitler to make this seem more connected. It only ties up to the ridiculous "National SOCIALISM is actually left-wing" argument that I swear he's made in another movie, but otherwise just brings a lot of unintentional entertainment value. Like seriously they get the most lazy hitler ever.

2. Actually convincing anybody. If you aren't completely on his side, you won't be persuaded by this. To me it's not just a matter of disagreement. D'Souza doesn't give a real argument as to why "Dems bad" and "Trump good". He likes Trump because he wont support the terrible democrats, but it's never explicitly clear why the democrats are so bad. He basically says they supported fascism and racism etc but never explains why they still do (which he kinda implies). He implies that the left wants socialism. I understand to a lot of people hear that word and throw up, but even then those people are never given any reason to believe that because D'Souza never really explains how they are socialist. Part of the problem is that he only debates right wing people so that he can't really argue the positions. Even if he just did out of clips and what people say, he is so ridiculously inconsistent with his depictions. For most of the movie, he likes to call dems the REAL fascists. But then occassionally he just takes time to show clips of lefties to insult them. Considering he never makes a distinction between liberals and lefties it just comes across as though he doesn't really have a good argument, he's just insulting the people he disagrees with.

Here's the thing - if I was Dinesh I'd do a bunch differently that would make it much better:

1. Interview democrat politicians and horribly edit them out of context.

2. Swap the Hitler scenario with a Stalin one, that way more people are convinced 3. Address the sex scandals by saying "But democrats had Bill Clinton" 4. Actually make arguments as to why the Dems are still racist 5. Not put music over all my scenes 6. Talk to Trump to make people like him more.

How hard is that?

But if he did that, then I wouldn't have something to convince conservatives not to be conservative. So thanks Dinesh!

Rejected Muppet Spouts Historical Revisionism, Insulting Documentaries
smooth_op_853 December 2020
If there is anything this rejected muppet does well, it's propaganda. See, he doesn't ouright LIE, but he DOES leave out bits of truth.

He tries to separate Donald Trump and Richard Spencer by saying Trump doesn't care where immigrants came from while Spencer does--LIE, Trump spouted the "no matter where they come from" at a naturalization ceremony. He tries to sever the connection between the MAGA hats and the tiki torches of Charlottesville VERY unconvincingly, he tries to join Jacksonian Democrats with todays Democrats in a desperate bid to paint republicans as the good party

The man uses the word PROGRESSIVE a lot...in its most generic meaning refusing to talk about the movement in the early 20th Century that called for better reforms to government and the peoples' role in it.

In essence, he takes all he doesn't like with a Trump and Republicans can do no wrong approach. It comes out as senseless drivel to anyone who knows history and frankly, it is insulting to documentarians that actually research the things they discuss in theirs

Factually accurate- Soros is revealed
deckerenterprisesca5 August 2018
I am glad I went to this movie. Dinesh is clear concise, and literate. He uses facts to prove his statements and in the end shows the true character of the individuals who are at the head of the "progressive" movement. Soros is unabashed in his elitist/globalist attitude toward his fellow humanity. Evil would succeed if everybody was like Soros. If you disagree with the facts in this movie then you should take a deep dive into why. Could it be you have discomfort now that you know the truth and are morally obligated to change??? Now that you know, you cannot continue to be ignorant.. If you cannot have a conversation with your political opposite without yelling or personally insulting them something is wrong.. We are all AMERICANS. If the National Anthem offends you then be intellectually honest with yourself and buy a house in another country. DO NOT try to turn OUR Democratic Republic into a Democratic Socialist country.

A great documentary
fapt-065155 November 2018
This was a great documentary that presented very credible sources regarding the subject matter in it. I have only seeing extremely negative things said about this movie, but I have not seen a single person debunking anything from what is said in this movie, only angry Democrats. 10/10

Too Sad!
casvine4 August 2018
Do people really believe this stuff. So twisted. No one party caused the hate and division in this country. So full of half truths, division and dishonesty. When will there be a documentary that tells it all. Lying and deceit is the story of this administration and this movie.. Too bad!

Note the single Star Reviews. Pay Attention...
mrichtmyre1 October 2018
Not one single star reviewer refuted any claims made by this documentary. Why? Because all they have is their left bias. Nothing worse than worshiping an ideology and finding out everything you've been taught is a lie. I can understand the backlash. The left has become a religion. It's no wonder they would aim to show hate and vitriol for anything resembling conservatism. Just look at the first review by surveypat... Rubbish he/she says. Is this a commonly used word in America? - NO. So he is lied to about our history in his own country. It's too bad that this is what it has come to. If you look at a clean poll, Google shows this as 85% of viewers liked this movie. Seems that what is left of these commie liberals are still clawing at the bit. Good Movie - If you want facts - this is for you, if you want lies without even a hint of refute - listen to the single star reviews.

"Death of a Nation" is a pseudo documentary and awful propaganda
Michael Kenmore7 August 2018
(As e-mailed to friends.)

So, I went to the movies with my father to see Dinesh D'Souza's new "documentary" Death of a Nation.

I must say that as a "centrist" this movie is one of the worst and most bizarre documentaries ever made.

Its premises and theses that connects certain ideologies with the Leftist ideology and Democratic Party is so far fetched that it was dazzling for me to grasp, since I'm an alternative history reader.

I will go further. This movie cannot call itself a documentary. It is pseudo-documentary.

Dinesh and his filmmaking team including co-director and a famous producer who is a Mormon are deluded and disingenuous with Dinesh's insane premises.

I am not a denier of certain history. I have read far into the history NOT written by the victors after the wars that I found the theses offensive in trying to promote the false history by claiming that, for example, Italian fascism and National Socialism are the mere products of the left-wing ideology as "evolved", rather than correctly ascribing it as the historically authoritarian and far right-wing ideology.

The movie is terrible that deliberately subverts history to promote one side to present as the truth. Dinesh was disingenuous at best and delusional at worst.

I give the movie "zero star", and I did not care for the liberal film critics who already trashed the film. I saw it to evaluate the merits, and it has none.

I'd say that it's one of the worst 'documentaries' I ever saw, on par with the recent stupider Michael Moore films. And it can't be called a documentary, because it incorporates opinions of Dinesh as the historical revisionist.

Because the pseudo-documentary is so dishonest that I think Dinesh should have his citizenship denaturalized and then deported back to India where he belongs, because he is the charlatan who believes in Barnum's philosophy of "there is the sucker every minute".

Eye opening
paytonmaxfritz15 August 2018
Fantastic, eye opening movie. D'Souza is a political genius who not only knows his history, but accurately relates it to the corruption we see in today's politics. Seeing leftists critique this movie is as satisfying to watch as when they found out that crooked Hilary wouldn't be president.

Watch for yourself
teroneburgenheim19 September 2018
I read through almost every review, I can say from the reviews I read, (especially the 1-stars) the vast majority didn't watch the movie and so are just saying they did and giving it a 1 star for that reason.

One constant rhetoric in the reviews below is the "Parties Switched" - one of the only things that "switched" with the parties is the preference for government size.

Spectacular accurate take on history. Just watch for yourself. If you were an honest person, you could watch this movie and walk away able to at least consider a view opposite your own. it doesn't mean you have to agree. In order to think, you must be disagreed with though (unless you have multiple personalities that can argue with one another).

Facts Matter
lolitsadam4 August 2018
Really, nothing in this movie has even an iota of a factual basis. No historian would support its assertions, nor any political scientists. This is a smear-job done by a known and admitted convicted felon praising the man who pardoned him, to further their extreme far-right wing worldview. A movie that purports that a party that enacted civil rights laws nationwide and is the only party that still supports those laws today is comparable to one that committed ethnic genocide is plainly visibly factually inaccurate. This movie is an exercise in extreme propaganda that, before Trump, never would've been accepted by theaters with its extreme, anti-fact agenda.

This is a "documentary" to brainwash the already brainwashed.

Divisive nonsense
keithmoon664 August 2018
Making connections between left or right viewpoints in comparison with over 100 years ago is absurd. The West needs to find things that unite liberal and conservative. Truth and virtue should be precious. This film is bad divisive propoganda

I really just found it to be a really boring documentary, and I love historical documentaries, this was not for me, very weakly produced film, it was just not very good, perhaps a different director might've made it work.

History repeats itself
jd-2727221 October 2018
Very well documented history lesson revealing the similar comparisons between Lincoln and Trump. If you like factual history documentary you will like Death of a Nation. If your a liberal fake news kind person you will not like the comparison. I alway look for movies that profession critics give low rating because they are usually wrong.

I'm scared for America..
sonofasailor19985 August 2018
I don't know where to begin, the references used in this film are completely inaccurate and often times outright incorrect. Seems to be more a film to reassure extreme right wings that what they are doing with this country is correct, and that liberals are evil. Scary to think about what this film represents in terms of modern society...

willieb-8544819 November 2018
Only fools and people scared of real truth call this documentary a propaganda. Facts fear those who are being exposed for what they truly are in this film. This film puts a lot into perspective. I recommend all watch with an open mind. You may learn something.

Worst Movie in a long time
alexdg-8710312 August 2018
Warning: Spoilers
Truth is telling the whole story. When the film say Trump is all about free markets and open trade, when in the real world Trump is actively instituting trade tariffs, it is impossible to take this guy seriously. This is one of the ever so many gaps in logic and shifts from reality the film makes that is absurd. To compare Donald Trump to Abraham Lincoln is somewhere between a pipe dream and laughable. The film goes on with half truths and quotes that are completely removed from context, including labeling Richard Spencer of the Alt Right as Democrat, a liberal, and a progressive. If you are a die hard Trump supporter who does not want to ruin a good movie with to much truth, then this is the film for you. However, if you are looking for an honest assessment of anything, look elsewhere, because this is at best a work of fiction. As for the film making qualities, the plot is basically a smear campaign that jumps all over time and topic. There is no linear thought process or cohesion to the film. This is a very sloppy and poorly thought out film which could use a dose of truth and a good producer to edit it and put the scenes into a logical order. This is not a documentary to make you think, it is propaganda 101 and it is not even well done propaganda. At least Hitler and the Nazi's, who are referenced frequently in the film knew how to put together well thought out propaganda.

Loved it!
corrynegley8 November 2018
The liberals really dont want the truth out. Hence all the bad reviews. So thankful for freedom of speech that they would loved to squelch (because they are the real fascists). The parallels to nazi and far left liberals is very compelling. They sure do like to murder everything from babies to the elderly (it's how Hitler regime started too) and to it the gun control (because armed citizens won't willingly put themselves in train cars to be slaughtered) and the protesting they love to do to stop conservatives speach (cough cough fascism)... seems to me... everything the left screams about the right... is actually what the left is doing. Trying to project their sins onto the right.

Don't believe the abundant liberal / socialist reviews
chris-7989212 December 2018
While this documentary was not one of the best I have seen, (you can tell it was not made by a seasoned, well backed and financed company or institution) the way it was put together it is still very informative and based purely on researched facts. Do not allow the liberal reviews on here dissuade you from learning from this documentary. They tell you it's all propaganda and lies, however, after viewing this film, and watching intently for the supposed lies, as stated in other reviews, I was unable to find a blatant lie. It is in fact full of historical facts, film and news clips, and statements by scholars, pro-left supporters, and pro-right supporters alike.
