Two of-the-moment actors are leading a package headed to the Cannes market next week. Greta Lee, star of last year’s Oscar-nominated “Past Lives” and a SAG nominee for “The Morning Show,” and Kingsley Ben-Adir, whose starring vehicle “Bob Marley: One Love” exceeded box office expectations and who played Malcolm X in the three-time Oscar-nominated “One Night in Miami…,” are teaming with the reliable workhorse director Louis Leterrier in a new science fiction project called “11817.”
While the title could use an adjustment, Letterier – whose previous work includes “Transporter 2,” “Now You See Me,” and “The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance” – is co-producing the film with his new company, Carrousel Studios, with partners Thomas Benski, and French actor Omar Sy, who happens to be on this year’s Cannes jury.

Exclusive: Here’s some buzzy casting. Greta Lee (Past Lives) and Kingsley Ben-Adir (Bob Marley: One Love) are in negotiations to star in director and producer Louis Leterrier’s (Now You See Me) upcoming sci-fi horror film 11817.
Both actors are on a roll. The former is coming off a string of hits including Oscar nominee Past Lives, Apple TV drama The Morning Show and Sony’s Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, while Ben-Adir’s last two movies couldn’t have gone much better in the shape of box office hits Bob Marley: One Love and Barbie.
In 11817, inexplicable forces trap a family of four inside their house indefinitely. As both modern luxuries and life or death essentials begin to run out, the family must learn how to be resourceful to survive and outsmart who – or what – is keeping them trapped.
Additional casting is underway on the project, which is based on a script by Matthew Robinson.

Movie theater owner Cinemark Holdings reported first-quarter revenue of $572.9 million for the three months ended March 31, down 5 percent from $610.8 million in the prior year.
That beat a Wall Street analysts estimate for overall revenue at $558.2 million. Overall attendance fell to 40.0 million patrons across its global footprint, down from 42.9 million customers in 2023, due to last year’s Hollywood strikes and their impact on the studio movie supply.
Admissions revenue came in at $289.8 million, down 6.8 percent from $311.0 million, and concession revenue also fell 5 percent to $224.2 million from a year-earlier $235.8 million, as food and drink sales were hit by the attendance decline, including in Latin America.
The company reported a net profit of $24.8 million, compared to a loss of $3.1 million in the prior year, though, helped by a gain of $27.7 million from an income tax benefit due mainly to the release of valuation allowances in certain foreign markets. Amid Paramount Global’s removal of Bob Bakish as CEO and the ongoing uncertainty of a company sale, it was business as usual for the first quarter at the media conglomerate — which included a $1.3 billion charge for content write-offs as well as layoffs.
Paramount Global reported Q1 2024 earnings Monday, announcing Bakish’s exit and the installation of an unusual three-in-a-box “Office of the CEO”: CBS’s George Cheeks, Chris McCarthy, Showtime/MTV Entertainment Studios and Paramount Media Networks, and Paramount Pictures’ Brian Robbins. The committee of three made brief remarks on the earnings call but didn’t take questions from analysts. The call, which lasted less than 10 minutes, concluded with the theme music to “Mission: Impossible.”
During the first quarter of 2024, Paramount Global took a total of $1.12 billion in content charges, including $909 million for the impairment of content to its estimated fair value as well as $209 million for development cost write-offs and contract-termination costs.

Paramount has just unleashed its first quarter financials and they look pretty promising, although all eyes are on the shakeup in the C-suite. Revenue was higher across the board, albeit a hair shy of Wall Street expectations. Operating losses narrowed. Free cash flow rose, a key metric since it allows the company to pay down debt.
After a bleak Q4, TV and media group advertising jumped 14%, buoyed by Super Bowl Xviii on CBS in February. The studio had two winners in Mean Girls and Bob Marley: One Love. Paramount+ ended the quarter with more than 71 million subscribers, beating expectations and up from 65.7 million at the end of 2023.
The number hit just after the company confirmed that CEO Bob Bakish is departing, replaced with three division heads in a new office of the CEO amid drama-filled takeover talks with David Ellison’s Skydance.

The recent broadcast of Super Bowl Lviii boosted Paramount Global’s first quarter of 2024, stabilizing advertising revenue at its TV operations, as the company’s streaming operations added more than 3 million subscribers and cut losses there by more than 40%.
Overall, Paramount narrowed its first quarter operating losses while seeing a 6% uptick in revenue, due in large part to audience and advertiser interest in its Big Game presentation, which set a new viewing record.
The company released details of its first-quarter performance even as it announced a surprising executive turnover, with the heads of its TV, cable and movie businesses named to run the conglomerate after Bob Bakish, who had been the CEO for the past few years, was ousted. French studio Mediawan and Germany’s Leonine have signed a deal to merge their operation, forming one of Europe’s biggest film and TV companies.
The all-stock transaction, announced Sunday, will create a mini-major with companies and operations across 13 countries and annual revenues of more than €1 billion ($1.06 billion). There’s a nice trio of specialty films to highlight this weekend from Joanna Arnow, Uberto Pasolini and Caitlin Cronenberg’s feature directorial debut.
Joanna Arnow’s micro-budget comedy The Feeling That The Time For Doing Something Has Passed world premiered in Cannes’ Directors’ Fortnight. It follows a thirtysomething New York woman as time passes in her long-term casual Bdsm relationship, low-level corporate job, and quarrelsome Jewish family. Arnow writes, directs and stars. And that’s Bdsm, as in bondage and discipline, dominance and submission, sadism and masochism.
The helmer is thrilled to see her feature (after 2017’s i hate myself :), and a handful of well-received shorts) launch a theatrical run, with Magnolia distributing. “That’s how I dream of my movies being seen,” Arnow tells Deadline. “It’s also so important to see comedies (on the big screen) Shared laughter with strangers is quite beautiful and healing in a way.

Paramount’s all-audience movie If, starring Ryan Reynolds and directed by John Krasinski, is heading for a $40M-plus opening on May 17 — which is very good for a non-holiday in May and for an original movie.
Krasinski produced, directed and wrote If.
The PG movie is hot with parents, kids and the 17-34 crowd, especially female. If arrived on three-week pre-release tracking with a very-high 16 “unaided” — that’s the category where those polled express interest in a movie without being prompted. That’s higher than what DreamWorks Animation/Universal’s Kung Fu Panda 4 arrived on tracking with; that fourthquel debuted to $57.9M.
Comps are tricky for If: Hello?! When was the last PG-rated live-action conceived tentpole based on an original property? There was the Jennifer Aniston-Owen Wilson 2008 dog romance Marley & Me, which debuted to $36.3M, but that doesn’t count. There also was 2004’s Nicolas Cage action...

Martin Scorsese is ol’ blue-eyeing a big new project.
Variety reports that Scorsese is developing a Frank Sinatra biopic that will star Leonardo DiCaprio as the legendary crooner and Jennifer Lawrence as movie star Ava Gardner, Sinatra’s second wife. It would be the Oscar-winning director’s seventh film with DiCaprio and a reunion for DiCaprio and Lawrence, who worked together on the Best Picture-nominated dark comedy “Don’t Look Up.”
The 81-year-old filmmaker plans to tackle the Sinatra biopic after “Life of Jesus,” his independently financed religious film that is expected to go into production this year. (Variety notes that “Silence” star Andrew Garfield and “Top Gun: Maverick” actor Miles Teller are up for potential roles in that project.)
The Sinatra film is not set – Frank’s daughter Tina Sinatra controls his estate and has not given her blessing to the project – but studios are already interested, with Sony said...

Vue International is planning a further shift into non-English language direct distribution following the release of black-and-white Italian comedy drama There’s Still Tomorrow, according to CEO Tim Richards.
”We’re going to start bringing in Polish films, German films, Dutch films and Danish films as well,” said Richards, talking today at The Leisure Property Forum held at the Vue West End in London. ”We know there’s a market here, particularly this year when there are fewer films being released.”

“Kung Fu Panda 4” (Universal) debuted on PVOD to #1 April 9, which it has enjoyed for a week; that will end with “Dune: Part 2” (Warner Bros.), which debuts today after 46 days in release.
Both films still are in the box office Top 10. “Panda” actually rose one position to #4 this weekend, with its 29 percent drop the lowest of any holdover on the list. It still has a shot at a $200 million domestic gross. “Dune 2,” which was #5 this weekend and will get close to $300 million, will likely minimize the impact of parallel home availability given its essential visual presentation.
Based on presales, “Dune 2” is already #6 on iTunes top 10 list (ranked by transactions). Other platforms stick to currently available titles, but it would be surprising if it’s not immediately #1 on both iTunes and Fandango.

It may not be hitting theaters in North America until next month, but the Amy Winehouse biopic "Back to Black" is off to a solid start at the box office overseas. The film opened in the U.K. and Ireland this past weekend, and it managed to top the charts in the territory, coming in ahead of Alex Garland's "Civil War," which topped the domestic charts with a $26 million debut, as well as "Kung Fu Panda 4." It's an impressive start, but how will the film fare when it arrives in the U.S. in May?
Director Sam Taylor-Johnson's "Back to Black" topped the U.K./Ireland charts with $3.36 million (£2.7m). That was above "Kung Fu Panda 4," which was in its third weekend in the territory, while "Civil War" had to settle for third place. “Michael,” the upcoming biopic about pop legend Michael Jackson that seems guaranteed to spark conversation, debuted a dazzling and emotional first look at CinemaCon during Lionsgate’s presentation to theater owners on Thursday in Las Vegas.
The sweeping footage starts as hysterical fans scream along to Jackson as he owns the stage, flashing between performances of his biggest hits like “Man in the Mirror” and “Thriller.” The movie, which is still in production, will feature over 30 songs and recreate several performances of them, starting with Jackson 5’s classic rendition of “ABC” on “American Bandstand.”
Directed by Antoine Fuqua, “Michael” promises to be a sweeping look at the musician’s life, including the emotional toll that being a superstar took on the shy and private man behind the moonwalk. The trailer also captures Jackson as he’s stalked by adoring crowds and paparazzi.

To understand why is the industry so conflicted over how to release movies, check out the contradictory paths of two Amazon films, “The Beekeeper” and “Road House.”
The first, which stars Jason Statham as a righteous avenger, is a $40 million production acquired by Amazon MGM for the US. It grossed $66 million in its domestic theatrical release and went on to become a hit as a $19.99 PVOD. Currently, it’s $5.99 to rent and is #1 at iTunes (which ranks by transactions) as well as Fandango (which tracks by revenue).
That’s nearly unheard of at Fandango, which sometimes see its entire top 10 comprised of $19.99 titles. It is also unusual for a mid-level success like “The Beekeeper” to be so dominant on VOD.
Meantime, “Road House” skipped theaters and leads Reelgood’s list of most-streamed movies for the week ending last Wednesday.
At Netflix, another random theatrical release dominates its most-watched movie chart.

The global box office saw some encouraging rebound in 2023, and is off to a better than expected start in the first quarter of this year, but there’s been concern about a downward trend in per capita admissions, and not just because of the strikes’ disruption to the Hollywood theatrical pipeline, but audiences’ moviegoing tendencies have changed coming out of Covid. How to solve?
It takes two to tango, specifically between exhibitors and studios in order to rally moviegoing back to pre-pandemic heyday levels; last year’s near $34 billion global box office was still 15% behind the 2017-2019 average.
It all comes down to both studios and theater chains “working together to share information” said Paramount SVP, International Distribution, Helen Moss, “to elevate something new you can’t get at home.”
Moss’ remarks were made today during the CinemaCon Las Vegas session “Changing Tastes and Changing Landscapes” moderated by Deadline International Box Office Editor Nancy Tartaglione.

Listening to audiences and creating original content alongside franchises and IP-driven films is critical for cinema to thrive, Universal’s president of international distribution Veronika Kwan Vandenberg told CinemaCon attendees on Monday.
Three of the top 10 worldwide releases in 2023 were “originals” – Warner Bros’ Barbie, and Universal’s Oppenheimer and The Super Mario Bros Movie – Kwan Vandenberg said, adding that they drove a significant share of last year’s global summer box office.
Universal’s 2023 releases earned $2.97bn at the international box office and $4.9bn worldwide.
“We have learned we cannot rely on just the IP alone,” the executive declared in her International Day keynote.

Cinema owners, studios and indie distributors gathering in Las Vegas this week for exhibition’s biggest confab seek visibility into a theatrical landscape gut-punched by Hollywood strikes last year just as a post-Covid recovery was revving up. Production halted for months led to fewer releases on the schedule.
But there’s reason for optimism, from Dune 2 and Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire to a tentpole-laden slate with clips and peeks eagerly awaited by the CinemaCon crowd. Amazon and Apple and studio parents recognize the value of an exclusive theatrical release — a realization that wasn’t at all a given post-pandemic.
National Association of Theatre Owners president and CEO Michael O’Leary and Charles Rivkin, chairman and CEO of the Motion Picture Association, talked with Deadline on the state of the industry as CinemaCon kicks off and ahead of their keynotes Tuesday.
The interviews were edited and condensed for clarity.

Exhibitor convention CinemaCon starts tomorrow in Las Vegas, and it would be great to kick off with happy box office news. That’s not the case with surprisingly weak results for two fresh titles, “Monkey Man” (Universal) and “The First Omen” (Disney). They brought the weekend total lower than expected and suggested an already-weak April could slide toward a worst-case scenario.
“Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” (Warner Bros.) repeated as #1 in its second week, more than tripling the take for #2, Dev Patel’s “Monkey Man.” The franchise’s 60 percent drop isn’t bad, given an opening weekend that included Good Friday and the Easter holidays. It’s grossed $135 million U.S./Canada in 10 days.
After March revitalized the concept of franchises and sequels as an essential part of the distribution ecosystem, the hope was April would demonstrate continued audience interest in lower-budgeted original titles — as evidenced earlier this year...

Air Supply may be the latest chart-topping musical act to get the big screen treatment.
Altit Media Group said it plans to make biopic about the band that will, in a nod to one of the group’s biggest hits, be entitled, “All Out of Love: The Air Supply Story.” The film will be released in summer 2025 to celebrate Air Supply’s 50th anniversary. Filming is set to take place in Australia and the U.K. during the fourth quarter of 2024.
Air Supply found success with a series of romantic ballads. Their hits include “Here I Am,” “Lost in Love,” “The One That You Love”, “All Out of Love”, “Every Woman in the World” and “Even the Nights Are Better.” The group scored seven Top 5 singles in a row, tying the Beatles’ consecutive run, and went on to sell more than 100 million albums worldwide while playing over 5,000 shows. What the movie-streaming public wants depends on which top 10 chart you prefer. This week offered little consistency and some outright contradictions.
One thing is clear: Jake Gyllenhaal’s straight-to-streaming “Road House” remake is a massive hit. Amazon Prime reported over 50 million worldwide viewers through its second streaming weekend and gateway app Reelgood reported it as the week’s #1 movie for March 21-27 in the U.S.
“The Accountant,” a 2016 Warner Bros. drama starring Ben Affleck, is currently #1 at Netflix. On Easter weekend “The Passion of the Christ” led VOD at iTunes, while the just-released $19.99 “Imaginary” (Lionsgate) topped Fandango’s revenue-calculated list. (It was #20 at iTunes.) For a second week, Google Play did not update its list.
“Ordinary Angels” (also Lionsgate) is #2 at Fandango, but #14 at iTunes. Since Fandango calculates by revenue, that list favors PVODs — but this week, six of its top 10 rented for $5.99 or less; “The Passion of the Christ,...

Actor Brad Pitt‘s brother, Doug Pitt, and sister, Julie Pitt Neal, are making names for themselves in the world of philanthropy.
Brad, Doug and Julie were all born to William and Jane Pitt in Shawnee, Oklahoma, but later moved to Springfield, Illinois. Brad dropped out of a local Missouri University without finishing his journalism degree and moved to Hollywood to pursue his acting career, while the rest of the Pitts stayed behind.
While Brad was working on sets in Hollywood, Doug built a computer company back home and developed his entrepreneurial career (though he has starred in several commercials throughout the years). Julie got married and built a home and family.
The siblings share a love for philanthropy.
Jane has always supported her children in their charity-driven efforts. “I’m very proud of all my children. They see a need and try to step in, and fill it,” she...

Bruce Springsteen will be the subject of Deliver Me From Nowhere, a biopic from director Scott Cooper. The Bear’s Jeremy Allen White is the top choice to star.
Writer and director Scott Cooper is no stranger to musical films, having written and directed the terrific 2009 drama Crazy Heart, which saw Jeff Bridges play an alcoholic country singer, for which he won an Oscar for Best Actor.
Deliver Me From Nowhere, much like Bob Marley: One Love, which is still in cinemas, will focus on the creation of one iconic album, in this case Nebraska, which Springsteen made in 1982. It is often cited as his masterpiece. It was released between 1980’s The River and 1984’s Born In The USA, and Springsteen recorded it without his regular collaborators The E Street Band. Born In The USA is one of the best selling albums of all time.
