“Maria” serves as the third entry in the unofficial trilogy from director Pablo Larraín about iconic 20th-century women during a specific period when they receded from public view. 2016’s “Jackie” examined the role Jackie Kennedy played in the aftermath of her husband’s assassination, and “Spencer” took a measured approach to the life of Diana Spencer before her official divorce from the future King Charles of England. To say that “Maria” is the least all-encompassing of this trilogy is not an insult, but rather a calculated choice on Larraín’s part. This isn’t the story about how the consciousness of a nation was thrust on the shoulders of a young woman, but rather a deconstruction of the artifice of celebrity.

Filmmakers and distributors of awards-hopefuls have until Nov. 4 to submit their category preference — drama versus musical or comedy — to the Golden Globes organization, which reserves the right to overturn any classification that it finds egregiously inaccurate.
Some of this year’s cases are inarguable — for instance, Netflix’s Emilia Pérez, in which characters spontaneously burst into song, is clearly a musical (if not a comedy), and A24’s The Brutalist, in which an immigrant faces all sorts of harrowing hurdles, is clearly a drama. There are, however, also plenty of close-calls, about which many have made assumptions, but, in most cases, not confirmed.
The Hollywood Reporter has been working the phones and can now report which way almost every contender is breaking. This intel is, of course, subject to change prior to Nov. 4, and to being overturned by the Globes thereafter — but it is current as of this writing.

While in discussion to play Rita Marley in “Bob Marley: One Love,” actress Lashana Lynch “met up with [director] Reinaldo Green just to discuss, selfishly, my thoughts on being a Jamaican woman” and, “artist-to artist,” she wanted to “express the importance of the authenticity that will eventually be portrayed in this movie, which a lot of it boils down to accent. I wanted to know that I was auditioning for a project that would protect the accents, protect patois, and really represent Jamaica in the way that I know it deserves.” Watch our complete video interview with Lynch above.

Kingsley Ben-Adir admits that it was “a little bit overwhelming” to tackle the role of legendary reggae star Bob Marley in “Bob Marley: One Love” because of “the amount of new things that I was gonna have to get a hold of,” from his music to his language, “but I was also up for the challenge, and after I met [Bob Marley’s son Ziggy Marley, who produced the film,] and I spoke to the family, I really felt like I couldn’t walk away from it. It was too incredible an opportunity.” Watch our complete video interview with Ben-Adir above.

A24 has bought U.S. distribution right to “Pillion,” a film described as a “fun and filthy romance with heart” and starring Alexander Skarsgard and Harry Melling (“The Pale Blue Eye,” “The Queen’s Gambit”).
Produced by multi-Oscar-winning powerhouse Element Pictures, “Pillion” — which wrapped earlier this summer — marks the feature debut of Harry Lighton, whose short “Wren Boys” was nominated for best British short at the 2018 BAFTAs, was nominated for a BIFA and had its U.S. premiere at the Sundance Film Festival.
“Pillion” follows Colin (Melling), a weedy wallflower letting life pass him by. That is until Ray (Skarsgård), the impossibly handsome leader of a motorbike club, takes him on as his submissive. Ray uproots Colin from his dreary suburban life, introducing him to a community of kinky, queer bikers and taking all sorts of virginities along the way. The State of the Race
Similar to two years ago, the current race for the Best Actor Oscar has four names that seem to have their nominations locked in, with that fifth nomination slot up for grabs.
The Venice premiere of Luca Guadagnino’s “Queer” confirmed suspicions that Daniel Craig could be a major contender this year, but the real surprise from that same festival was just how much Brady Corbet’s “The Brutalist,” and by virtue its lead Adrien Brody, really has a shot at becoming an Academy Awards frontrunner across categories.

Almost all of the Best Actor winners at this century’s 23 Academy Awards ceremonies have ticked at least one of these two boxes: they were over 40 or portraying a real-life fellow. [The only exceptions: Russell Crowe (“Gladiator”) and Jean Dujardin (“The Artist”) who were 36 and 39 respectively when they won for playing fictional characters.] Of this year’s leading contenders for Best Actor all but one (who stars in a long-awaited sequel to a Best Picture champ) tick at least one of those two boxes. Since they’ve been together, Meghan Markle has received some beautiful jewelry from Prince Harry, including pieces from his mother, Princess Diana‘s personal collection. In fact, Meghan’s engagement ring holds diamonds that once belonged to the late princess. Anyone who watched the Sussexes’ first joint interview after their engagement announcement will remember hearing the details about the ring the Duke of Sussex gave his bride-to-be.
The couple shared the story of Harry’s proposal and then when asked about the ring, Meghan proudly displayed the six-carat, cushion-cut sparkler. The ring features three stones. The center gem is from Botswana, a country close to the couple’s hearts, and its two smaller diamonds on each side are from Princess Diana’s collection. But the ring has done a disappearing act on more than one occasion and that has Prince William pretty upset.

It was reported earlier this year that Sam Mendes is involved in The Beatles biopics, four separate feature films about each member of the band. In June, reports emerged that Paul Mescal, Barry Keoghan, Harris Dickinson, and Charlie Rowe were tapped to portray the four artists. However, the most recent update about the film is disappointing for fans.

The biopic of Kiss – Shout It Out Loud – is set to be directed by Terminator Salvation and Charlie’s Angels’ McG – more here.
Biopics of bands and music stars are proving to be solid box office, as even the middlingly-received Bob Marley: One Love demonstrated earlier this year. As these words are being written, preparation work continues on a biopic of the Bee Gees that Ridley Scott will be directing next year, while Sam Mendes is going three better, and putting together four films about The Beatles.
There’s been talk about a Kiss biopic meanwhile for a few years now, and it was back in 2021 that it looked like it was going to happen. Joachim Ronning was going to direct at that point, and it was going to be made with Netflix money.
Netflix appears to have dropped out of the project though, perhaps part of its newly-found frugality towards movies.

Bruce Springsteen could sense that his current tour with the E Street Band would be unlike any of their previous efforts. Filmmaker Thom Zimny, who has collaborated with the music legend for the past 24 years, had the same hunch.

“I’ve actually never had to answer that question so I suppose I will do it here,” Clooney said when asked about it at the Venice press conference for his new film “Wolfs.”
“The person who should be applauded is the president, who has done the most selfless thing a president has done since George Washington,” he said, adding: “What should be remembered is the selfless act of someone who, it’s very hard to let go of power — we know that, we’ve seen it all over the world — and for someone to say I think there’s a better path forward, all the credit goes to him. Jeremy Allen White says his Bruce Springsteen prep has involved a lot of YouTube rabbit holes — with some advice from the real-life rockstar peppered in.
White will play Springsteen in 20th Century and Disney’s Deliver Me From Nowhere. News of the movie’s production picked up earlier this spring, and the star of The Bear is now deep in preparation for the legendary role.
“I’m really lucky that there’s sort of a team of folks now in place to help young actors portray rock stars,” White told GQ. “I’ve got a really talented group of people helping me train vocally, musically, to get ready for this thing.”
In recent years, Austin Butler portrayed Elvis in Elvis, Rami Malek played Freddie Mercury in Bohemian Rhapsody, Naomi Ackie played Whitney Houston in Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance With Somebody and Kingsley Ben-Adir played Bob Marley in Bob Marley: One Love.

The Supacell star on channelling his South London roots into a rising career.
“Wolverine is definitely hard to kill,” says Tosin Cole.
He’s been mulling over this. Cole is speaking to Empire during a morning off from filming mystery comedy thriller Three Bags Full: A Sheep Detective Movie (written by The Last Of Us’ Craig Mazin), in which he stars alongside Hugh Jackman. For the past few weeks, alongside shooting that, Cole has been promoting his Netflix super-powered drama Supacell while Jackman has been promoting Deadpool & Wolverine. So: the super-fight is on.
Cole doesn’t fancy his chances. “Michael ain’t got no offensive skills,” he says of Supacell’s time-manipulating lead. “Wolverine’s all offensive. Michael’s a very logical person, he’d be like, ‘He’s got three knives in each hand, he can heal himself, he’s very aggressive.’ So I think I’d just run away.

For Best Song for Visual Media, the race is full of plausible winners. Olivia Rodrigo could take home another Grammy this year here for “Can’t Catch Me Now,” the lead single from the “Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes” soundtrack. There’s precedent for Rodrigo, as Taylor Swift previously won here for a song from the same franchise, “Safe and Sound” from the original “Hunger Games”; both, however, were snubbed by the Oscars.
Speaking of Oscars, one Academy Award-nominated song that could be a contender here is “It Never Went Away” performed and co-written by Grammy favorite Jon Batiste for his documentary “American Symphony.” Batiste doesn’t always win at these awards,...

Timothée Chalamet embodies the Nobel Prize-winning legend in James Mangold’s 60s biopic. Check out the A Complete Unknown trailer below.
It’s been no secret that Timothée Chalamet and James Mangold have been working on a Bob Dylan biopic for what feels like a lifetime, so it’s refreshing to discover that A Complete Unknown will be arriving in cinemas sooner than we originally thought.
With the year quickly passing by with no word on the film, the safe bet was to assume Searchlight would go for a release sometime in 2025. According to the release alongside the film’s first trailer today though, it’s opening in the US this December – just in time for young Chalamet to get on his awards campaign.

From Inside Out 2 To The Fall Guy, Here Are The Box Office Winners & Losers Of 2024(Photo Credit –YouTube)
This summer has shown us too many sequels, and while some of them have done incredibly well at the box office, others weren’t much celebrated in 2024. Despite ticket sales mounting for every blockbuster release, some sequels should have skipped theatres altogether, yes, we’re talking about the Mad Max franchise’s latest release, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga. As much as fans expected the movie would live up to the earlier instalments, this chapter faced a treacherous road of failure. In a stunning reversal, David Ellison’s Skydance Media and Paramount Global controlling shareholder Shari Redstone have returned to the M&a altar.
The companies have reached terms on a revised merger agreement for Redstone’s National Amusements Inc. just three weeks after Redstone abruptly pulled out of a planned combination, multiple people familiar with the talks told Deadline. Nai controls almost 80% of voting shares in Paramount.
A special committee of Paramount’s board of directors, which was formed to evaluate strategic options for the troubled media company, is currently reviewing the updated deal terms, according to sources. The Wall Street Journal earlier Tuesday reported on the revived discussions.
Reps from Paramount, Skydance and Nai declined comment.
The proposal currently being considered would see Skydance pay $1.75 billion for Nai. That’s less than what the parties had previously agreed to for the first step in a two-step transaction bringing Nai under...
