More than a hundred songwriters, composers, perfomers and films are represented in the nominees’ list for the 2024 Hollywood Music in Media Awards — from pop luminaries like Elton John & Brandi Carlile, Miley Cyrus, Lainey Wilson and Pharrell Williams to celebrated scorers like Hans Zimmer, Harry Gregson-Williams, Kris Bowers and Trent Reznor & Atticus Ross.

The list of nominees was unveiled Wednesday, in advance of a ceremony due to take place Nov. 20 at the Avalon in Hollywood.

“Emilia Pérez” led all films with five Hmma nominations. “Blitz” and “A Complete Unknown” have three nominations apiece. Actress Lashana Lynch is going to be a mom! The Bob Marley: One Love star and her husband Zachary Momoh are expecting their first baby together. The actress revealed the news by debuting her baby bump on the red carpet.

During the New York City premiere of her latest TV series The Day of the Jackal, which premieres on Peacock on November 14th, Lashana stepped onto the red carpet with her growing baby bump on display. The actress wore an Ottolinger sleeveless dress that featured side cutouts. The print on the dress included a t-shirt and tie as well as a leopard print. The actress’s co-stars for the series – Eddie Redmayne and Ursula Corbero – appeared to be just as shocked with Lashana’s baby bump, a sign they likely didn’t know prior to the event.

Filmmakers and distributors of awards-hopefuls have until Nov. 4 to submit their category preference — drama versus musical or comedy — to the Golden Globes organization, which reserves the right to overturn any classification that it finds egregiously inaccurate.

Some of this year’s cases are inarguable — for instance, Netflix’s Emilia Pérez, in which characters spontaneously burst into song, is clearly a musical (if not a comedy), and A24’s The Brutalist, in which an immigrant faces all sorts of harrowing hurdles, is clearly a drama. There are, however, also plenty of close-calls, about which many have made assumptions, but, in most cases, not confirmed.

The Hollywood Reporter has been working the phones and can now report which way almost every contender is breaking. This intel is, of course, subject to change prior to Nov. 4, and to being overturned by the Globes thereafter — but it is current as of this writing.

A24 has bought U.S. distribution right to “Pillion,” a film described as a “fun and filthy romance with heart” and starring Alexander Skarsgard and Harry Melling (“The Pale Blue Eye,” “The Queen’s Gambit”).

Produced by multi-Oscar-winning powerhouse Element Pictures, “Pillion” — which wrapped earlier this summer — marks the feature debut of Harry Lighton, whose short “Wren Boys” was nominated for best British short at the 2018 BAFTAs, was nominated for a BIFA and had its U.S. premiere at the Sundance Film Festival.

The State of the Race

Similar to two years ago, the current race for the Best Actor Oscar has four names that seem to have their nominations locked in, with that fifth nomination slot up for grabs.

The Venice premiere of Luca Guadagnino’s “Queer” confirmed suspicions that Daniel Craig could be a major contender this year, but the real surprise from that same festival was just how much Brady Corbet’s “The Brutalist,” and by virtue its lead Adrien Brody, really has a shot at becoming an Academy Awards frontrunner across categories.

Almost all of the Best Actor winners at this century’s 23 Academy Awards ceremonies have ticked at least one of these two boxes: they were over 40 or portraying a real-life fellow. [The only exceptions: Russell Crowe (“Gladiator”) and Jean Dujardin (“The Artist”) who were 36 and 39 respectively when they won for playing fictional characters.] Of this year’s leading contenders for Best Actor all but one (who stars in a long-awaited sequel to a Best Picture champ) tick at least one of those two boxes. The center gem is from Botswana, a country close to the couple’s hearts, and its two smaller diamonds on each side are from Princess Diana’s collection. But the ring has done a disappearing act on more than one occasion and that has Prince William pretty upset.

It was reported earlier this year that Sam Mendes is involved in The Beatles biopics, four separate feature films about each member of the band. In June, reports emerged that Paul Mescal, Barry Keoghan, Harris Dickinson, and Charlie Rowe were tapped to portray the four artists. However, the most recent update about the film is disappointing for fans.

While fans eagerly await to see Mendes’ take on the project, it will be a long time before the film arrives in theaters. It is reported that Mendes will be working on the projects until mid-2028. With the earlier reported plans to release all four films in a single year, Mendes’ films will take years to hit theaters.

Production is now under way in New Zealand on “Marama,” a gothic horror film from Māori writer-director Taratoa Stappard. Production is taking place around Auckland on New Zealand’s North Island and in the South Island’s Otago region.

Set in North Yorkshire, England, in 1859, “Marama” is the story of a young Māori woman’s fight to reclaim her identity and indigenous culture in Victorian-era Britain. The film title comes from the woman’s name.

The film features Māori actor Ariana Osborne in the lead role, alongside British actor Toby Stephens who has recently wrapped principal photography on the project.

The cast also stars Umi Myers (“Bob Marley: One Love,” “Dope Girls”) along with New Zealanders Erroll Shand and Jordan Mooney.

“Marama” is produced by Sharlene George, co-ceo and founding partner of production company The Sweetshop.

Paramount Pictures’ historical drama, “September 5,” which recounts the harrowing true story of the 1972 Munich Olympic hostage crisis, is gearing up for the upcoming Oscar race with a full-scale awards campaign.

Following enthusiastic receptions at the Venice and Telluride film festivals, the film’s ensemble cast, including Peter Sarsgaard, John Magaro, Ben Chaplin, and Leonie Benesch, will compete in the supporting acting categories. In addition, the film is set to contend in major categories such as best picture, director, and original screenplay. Paramount Pictures acquired the film from its boutique label Republic Pictures shortly after yjr festival debuts.

A feature about the life of Queen Latifah is in the works as the first in a slate of independently financed hip-hop biopics hailing from Flavor Unit Entertainment, Westbrook Studios and Jesse Collins Entertainment.

The film will follow the ascension of Latifah as the performer became a rapper, singer and actress who has won Emmy, Grammy and Golden Globe awards. HarbourView Equity Partners is financing this film, in addition to future biopics that also will spotlight iconic hip-hop performers.

It has not yet been announced who will be writing or directing the Latifah project.

Producers for the film include Latifah and Shakim Compere for Flavor Unit Entertainment, Will Smith and Miguel Melendez for Westbrook Studios, and Jesse Collins and Dionne Harmon for Jesse Collins Entertainment. As these words are being written, preparation work continues on a biopic of the Bee Gees that Ridley Scott will be directing next year, while Sam Mendes is going three better, and putting together four films about The Beatles.

There’s been talk about a Kiss biopic meanwhile for a few years now, and it was back in 2021 that it looked like it was going to happen. Joachim Ronning was going to direct at that point, and it was going to be made with Netflix money.

Netflix appears to have dropped out of the project though, perhaps part of its newly-found frugality towards movies.

White will play Springsteen in 20th Century and Disney’s Deliver Me From Nowhere. News of the movie’s production picked up earlier this spring, and the star of The Bear is now deep in preparation for the legendary role.

“I’m really lucky that there’s sort of a team of folks now in place to help young actors portray rock stars,” White told GQ. “I’ve got a really talented group of people helping me train vocally, musically, to get ready for this thing.”

Based in Rome, Our Films reunites Gianani and Mieli, who exited their respective Fremantle-owned banners, Wildside and the Apartment, earlier this year. The pair, whose flair for talent has shined through their impressive track record over the years, will continue working with European, U.S. and international filmmakers and talent across features, documentaries and series.

Gianani and Mieli also have a co-production deal with Fremantle under which they will continue to shepherd a number of projects that they initiated at Fremantle, some of which are hot titles world premiering at the Venice Film Festival, such as Luca Guadagnino’s “Queer,” starring Daniel Craig; Pablo Larraín’s Maria Callas...

Mediawan has made it official that their majority stake in Lorenzo Mieli and Mario Gianani’s Our Films has closed as the Venice Film Festival gets underway. News of both parties’ union began to emerge out of Cannes.

The investment is in line with Mediawan’s strategy of creating a Pan-European studio, home to more than 80 production companies. The Paris-based studio made a majority investment in Brad Pitt’s Plan B back in December 2022 with four of that shingle’s projects premiering on the Lido: Tim Burton’s Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, the Apple Jon Watts directed Pitt-George Clooney comedy noir Wolfs, and documentaries One to One: John & Yoko, directed by Kevin Macdonald, and Apocalypse in the Tropics directed by Petra Costa.

Mieli and Gianani departed as CEOs of their respective Fremantle labels, Wildside and The Apartment, in January, and launched their Rome, Italy-based Our Films earlier this year.

Actor, writer and social media star Joshua Neal has signed with ColorCreative, the talent management firm co-created by Issa Rae and Deneise Davis, and led by Talitha Watkins.

The film came together from the CoCre lab at Sony Pictures. The lab was a previous pact between ColorCreative and Sony Pictures to source and incubate emerging, diverse screenwriters to develop and write their first studio feature based on original ideas.

Temuera Morrison, Zack Morris, David Field, Pacharo Mzembe and Gideon Mzembe have joined the cast of Amazon MGM Studios’ period feature The Bluff starring Priyanka Chopra Jonas.

Frank E. Flowers (Bob Marley: One Love) directs the film from a script he co-wrote with Joe Ballarini. Previously announced castmembers include Chopra Jonas, Karl Urban, Ismael Cruz Cordova, Safia Oakley-Green and Vedanten Naidoo.

The Bluff centers on a former pirate (Chopra Jonas) who attempts to keep her family safe when she is confronted with her dangerous past. The project will debut on Prime Video on a yet-to-be-announced release date.

Producing the movie are Anthony Russo, Joe Russo, Angela Russo-Otstot and Michael Disco for Agbo, along with Chopra Jonas and Cinestar Pictures’ Cisely Saldana and Mariel Saldana. It’s been no secret that Timothée Chalamet and James Mangold have been working on a Bob Dylan biopic for what feels like a lifetime, so it’s refreshing to discover that A Complete Unknown will be arriving in cinemas sooner than we originally thought.

With the year quickly passing by with no word on the film, the safe bet was to assume Searchlight would go for a release sometime in 2025. According to the release alongside the film’s first trailer today though, it’s opening in the US this December – just in time for young Chalamet to get on his awards campaign.

UK-Ireland box office takings for 2024 were down 7% in the first six months of the year compared to the same period in 2023.

A strong Q1 from January to March saw takings up 9%, but that fell back in Q2 from April to June, when takings dropped 21%, according to figures supplied by Comscore.

The total UK-Ireland box office for the first six months of 2024 was £451.6m, compared to £486.6m in 2023.

In a stunning reversal, David Ellison’s Skydance Media and Paramount Global controlling shareholder Shari Redstone have returned to the M&a altar.

The companies have reached terms on a revised merger agreement for Redstone’s National Amusements Inc. just three weeks after Redstone abruptly pulled out of a planned combination, multiple people familiar with the talks told Deadline. Nai controls almost 80% of voting shares in Paramount.

A special committee of Paramount’s board of directors, which was formed to evaluate strategic options for the troubled media company, is currently reviewing the updated deal terms, according to sources. The Wall Street Journal earlier Tuesday reported on the revived discussions.

Reps from Paramount, Skydance and Nai declined comment.
