In early 2022, a reoccurring, annoying discourse was circulating Horror Twitter: “There are no original horror icons anymore.” In particular, these people were discussing slashers, and how bored they were of the just-about-to-be-released Scream and Ghostface, as well as Michael Myers, off the heels of Halloween Kills, released a few months prior. Fast forward to just over a year later, and this writer is hoping those Tweeters have since eaten their words.
According to the elementary description for slasher movies spoken by Samara Weaving’s doomed Film Studies-teaching character in Scream VI, slashers are indicative of the era in which they are made, which is also true of any horror subgenre, to be fair. The Golden Age of Slashers of the ’80s are a product of its Reagan-era conservative values to which they either mocked or preached. The jaded, postmodern slashers of the late ’90s knew they needed a bit...

Hello, dear readers! To paraphrase a popular movie, “We’re in the Endgame now,” as Halloween is now merely only a few days away. If you’re looking for some last-minute viewing ideas to get you to the spooky season finish line, we definitely have a great array of choices heading home on Tuesday. The biggest recommendation that I can personally make in regard to perfect Halloween movie experiences is the Wnuf Halloween Special, which is getting a killer Blu-ray release tomorrow. Arrow Films is giving Dario Argento’s Deep Red a 4K upgrade this week, too, and Severin Films is showing love to both An Angel for Satan and Beyond Darkness.
Other releases for October 26th include Don’t Breathe 2, The Amazing Mr. X, Boardinghouse, Eye of the Devil, Skull: The Mask, Frankenstein’s Daughter, and Underworld: Limited Edition 5-Movie Collection.

Horror fans will never get bored of eighties slasher films will they? I don’t mean this as a bad thing though. I am one of those horror fans that could happily watch eighties slasher films on repeat for the rest of my life. So it’s no surprise that modern filmmakers continue to make movies that a highly influenced by the era. Skull: The Mask is the latest film to give it a go.

We are halfway through April, enjoying everything that our friends at Shudder have brought to us so far in the halfway to Halloween month. With our daytimers already marked for the remaining releases this month it's time to skip ahead a few pages and start checking off the month of May. What's a 'daytimer', old man? Moving along. There's a lot to choose from next month. Of the big additions to the lineup we already announced the other day that Canadian horror comedy PG Psycho Goreman will begin streaming on Shudder next month. Counter to that film's funny side of gore is Brazilian horror Skull: The Mask which also has a tremendous amount of practical gore effects as well, albeit leaning towards a...

Exclusive: Brazil’s Fantaspoa Fantastic Film Festival, which is the largest genre event in South America, has locked a partnership with local streaming service Darkflix to allow it to host its 16th edition online, and free for local audiences.
The 2020 edition of the fest was originally scheduled to take place in May this year, but had to be postponed due to the pandemic. As the virus is far from being contained in Brazil (the country now has both the second-highest number of infections and deaths in the world), organizers have ultimately decided that a physical edition will not be possible this year, and instead will pivot online.
Running July 24 – August 2, Fantaspoa will see Darkflix host a number of Latin American premieres of new genre films, and will feature a total of 110 features and shorts from 35 countries. Each title will have a cap of 5,000 viewers and will be geo-blocked for viewers in Brazil.

If you know anything about me, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that whenever a film can offer up a new perspective and/or a buffet of mind-blowingly cool special effects, I’m totally and completely on board, which was absolutely the case for Skull (which also goes by Skull: The Mask). A Brazilian horror/police thriller mashup that truly left my jaw on the proverbial floor numerous times, Skull is one of those films that needs to be seen to be believed, and my hope is that genre fans will get an opportunity to catch up with it sooner than later.
Skull kicks off with a prologue that takes us back to the February 1944, where we watch as a rare and dangerous artifact—a skull—is being utilized by a military group for nefarious reasons deep in the Amazon forest. We watch on as a blood-soaked, violent ritual is carried out,...

"It's a mask, not the devil." Holy hell! The first official trailer has debuted for a horror fantasy thriller titled Skull: The Mask, emerging out of Brazil this year. The gory horror film just premiered at the Chattanooga Film Festival online to some crazy good buzz so far, and if you're curious what this looks like, you can see some footage below. The film is an action-packed contemporary horror depicting a supernatural serial killer based on pre-Colombian mythology in a hunt for revenge in the metropolis of São Paulo. It's described as "mystical slasher film" and a "Brazilian bloodbath", and another review calls it an "insanely gory, ambitious effort." Starring Guta Ruiz, Tristan Aronovich, Ivo Müller, and Gilda Nomacce. The big, bad guy in this looks gnarly! Stay away from him. This is a brutal, uncensored trailer full of blood and guts - watch out. Here's the official trailer (+ poster...

Skull: The Mask opens in 1944, where we see an ancient artifact being used in a military experiment and religious ritual. The object is a grotesque mask in the shape of a skull called the “Mask of Anhangá” who was the executioner of Tahawantinsupay, a pre-Columbian god. The experiment fails of course, with bloody repercussions. The mask disappears and resurfaces many years later at an archaeological dig. It is brought to São Paulo, where a CEO for a foreign company may or may not have designs of his own for the mask. Before it can be delivered to him the mask goes missing once again, not before leaving two eviscerated bodies behind. Detective Beatriz Obdias is put in charge of inspecting these crimes, but...
