It’s a zoo out there. In 1990, the New York Yankees were a disaster; these were not the Derek Jeter years.
With a 67-95 record, 1990 was the first time in 24 years the Bronx Bombers finished in last place in the division, a whopping 21 games behind the rival the Boston Red Sox. It was the team’s worst record since 1912, two years before Babe Ruth even entered Major League Baseball (and eight years before he joined the Yankees). How bad were the 1990 Yankees? They threw a no-hitter and lost.
A new docuseries coming soon to Peacock, “Bronx Zoo ’90: Crime, Chaos, and Baseball,” gives the abysmal season a “The Last Dance” spin, covering both the drama on the field and off. Like what? Well, there was the time when Yankee owner George Steinbrenner paid a notorious gambler to dig up dirt on superstar player Dave Winfield. That gambler is interviewed in...

Ourand reports that ESPN/ABC will indeed have a smaller package of games than they did under the terms of their last broadcast deal.
The NBA appears to be ready to commit to another decade of broadcasting on ABC and ESPN. John Ourand of Puck News reports this week that a deal between ESPN and the NBA for broadcast rights to the league beginning in the 2025-26 season is very close, and that while nothing has been signed yet, ESPN will likely keep itself in a good position to launch two new streaming products in the next two years by keeping one of its most important sports partners in the fold.
Key Details: Ourand says the NBA has “essentially come to terms” on a deal with ESPN. ESPN/ABC will get a smaller package of games in the deal, but will get exclusive rights to the NBA Finals. Warner Bros. Discovery...

How Politics Affects Superhero Flicks: ‘Venom 3’ Changed Release Dates Due to Elections, Reports Say
A few weeks ago, it was announced that the latest Ssu entry, ‘Venom: The Last Dance’ will be released on October 25, which is quite a shift from its previous release date, scheduled on November 8, 2024.
Shifting release dates are nothing new for movies but in most cases, the movies in question get delayed and not advanced, which was quite a surprise. Fans did not however question at the time, and now the latest report from Variety, points in the direction that the movie shifted its release date due to upcoming US elections.
During election seasons, particularly around major elections like presidential elections, media coverage can dominate public attention. Movies may choose to avoid releasing during this time to ensure they don’t compete for audience attention with election-related news and events. Marketing costs a pretty penny, sometimes further bloating the development costs, so it doesn’t make all that much sense...

Politics’ Impact on Superhero Movies: Reports Claim ‘Venom 3’ Shifted Release Dates Due to Elections
Several weeks ago, it was revealed that the newest Ssu installment, ‘Venom: The Last Dance,’ would hit theaters on October 25, a notable change from its original November 8, 2024 release date.
While changes in release dates are common for movies, they typically involve delays rather than advances, making this shift quite unexpected. Fans didn’t raise questions initially, but a recent report from Variety suggests that the movie’s change in release date is due to the upcoming US elections.
During election seasons, especially around significant events like presidential elections, media coverage tends to dominate public focus. Movies may opt to delay their release during this time to avoid competing for audience attention with election-related news and events. Marketing expenses can be substantial, adding to the overall production costs, so it’s not always practical to vie with one of the country’s most prominent marketing and public relations machines.

The wide fanfare of the movie spawned a trilogy. The third and final movie, “Venom: The Last Dance” will be released in October this year. The movie was earlier slated for a November release but had to shift its schedule for one obvious reason.

Government officials are taking a closer interest in the Jv streamer, which has already drawn scrutiny from competitors and the DOJ.
The ambitious new sports streaming joint venture from Disney, Fox, and Warner Bros. Discovery has the potential to be a market-changing product when it launches. The platform will feature complete livestreams of 14 channels, as well as all the content from ESPN+, in a sports-focused bundle that will cost much less than a standard cable or satellite subscription. The banner outside the Majestic Hotel said it all.
“The Last Dance” read the message on the banner from Turkish-based television sales group Global Agency, a farewell gesture to the international TV market MIPTV, a fixture on the industry calendar since its launch in 1965, which will wrap its final edition this Wednesday.
The billboard summed up the wistful mood of many industry executives who made the final trip to the Mediterranean to say farewell to Mip.
“It feels like a funeral march,” quipped one German channel boss, as he strolled down the streets past the mostly empty restaurants and cafes. In MIPTV’s heyday, when more than 10,000 international executives crammed into Cannes for the annual Spring market, it was a battle to find a free table.
Those days are long gone and Mip’s demise, as a TV market designed for the pre-streaming era, was a long time coming. Event...

Veteran names like Palmer, Selva, Siciliano and Stark are out at NFL Media, which could soon fall under ESPN’s purview.
NFL players who get cut often cite the fact that the league is a business, first and foremost. This week, some high-profile NFL Network personalities found the same hard truth staring them in the face, as the league decided it was time to move on from Andrew Siciliano, Melissa Stark, James Palmer, and Will Selva. Normally these personnel cuts wouldn’t attract much more than well-wishes for the departing talent, but in this case, there is room to speculate that the moves are designed to help the NFL streamline its media operations in preparation for a big deal with Disney and ESPN.

Speaking with Axios, ESPN president Jimmy Pitaro said that he believes the two leagues will continue negotiating as a single unit.
ESPN chairman Jimmy Pitaro doesn’t want the WNBA to be the one that got away. He also doesn’t expect the league’s games to be going anywhere; the WNBA played 25 games across ABC, ESPN, and ESPN2 last season, and though it’s in line for a big raise from the $60 million per season that it currently collects from its broadcast partners, Pitaro confirmed to Axios recently that he does not believe the league will change its negotiating style or partners before signing its next contract.
The WNBA has been negotiating its deal jointly with the NBA, but recent reports have suggested it may try to break away and make a deal of its own. The WNBA’s current deal with broadcasters expires concurrently with the NBA’s after the 2024-25 season.

Despite some of the Ssu movies getting mixed or negative reviews (like Morbius), the Ssu keeps going and now has many live-action and animated projects in the works, focusing on Spider-Man’s side characters and villains. ‘Madame Web’ came out on February 14th and didn’t do well, with Dakota Johnson criticizing its development publicly.
Upcoming releases include ‘Kraven the Hunter’ on August 30th, 2024, and ‘Venom: The Last Dance,’ which changed its release date to October 25th instead of November 3rd. ‘Venom’ is the most successful franchise in the Ssu, so it’s not surprising that there are reports of Feige wanting to bring him into the MCU.

And beyond that, there’s a third film to come from the ‘Spumc’ (as it was once known) in 2024 – Tom Hardy’s third outing as Venom. Now, some fresh details have emerged about what’s in store.
The film has received the official title Venom: The Last Dance – a title that indicates a possible trilogy-capping final chapter. Or, perhaps, a Magic Mike-esque bout of male stripping. Perhaps even both. The film – both written and directed by Kelly Marcel, who co-wrote on Venom and Venom: Let There Be Carnage – also has a new release date, set to hit screens on 25 October. The film, as previously reported,...

Sony’s Spider-Man Universe, or Ssu, is growing bigger, and it all started with the movie ‘Venom’ in 2018. This movie is getting another sequel in 2024, and Tom Hardy is coming back to play the main character. Last summer, which was expected to be big for superhero movies, got messed up by the longest actors’ strike in Hollywood history, lasting 118 days.
Both the Ssu and the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) had to stop everything, even though they had a lot of movies and shows they wanted to make. But soon after the strike was over, they made some deals, and soon after, it was announced that ‘Venom 3’ would resume production. The release date was pushed back, and it was set to come out on November 8, 2024. We already told you about Tom Hardy calling the movie ‘The Last Dance,’ and it turns out that’s the actual title of the movie.

Sony’s Spider-Man Universe, or Ssu, keeps expanding, and the movie that started it all ‘Venom’ released in 2018, is bound to get its second sequel in 2024 with Tom Hardy returning to the role of the beloved Symbiote. Last summer, which was supposed to see some of the most expected productions resume and conclude, especially related to the superheroes, was affected by the longest SAG-AFTRA strike in Hollywood’s history— lasting for 118 days.
Both Ssu and MCU were paused, and both cinematic universes have a plethora of projects lined up to be developed, but in any case, shortly after the strike ended, both parties reached good deals, and the news broke out that ‘Venom 3’ will resume production and the movie received a new postponed release date set to hit the cinemas on November 8, 2024. College Football Playoff Contract With ESPN Not Finalized Yet; Cfp Rep Says Reporting Is 'Incorrect'
Recent conference realignment has thrown a wrench into broadcast negotiations as playoff structure must be determined before TV contracts.
In the words of iconic ESPN college football analyst Lee Corso, “Not so fast, my friend.” Despite reports earlier this month that Disney and the College Football Playoff Committee had reached a six-year to ESPN’s exclusive broadcast agreement for the Cfp playoffs, Yahoo! Sports is reporting that this is not the case. According to documents secured by the outlet, the appropriate playoff executives have not even reviewed a draft of the new proposal and any reporting that suggests that a deal is done was not accurate.
Key Points: Despite reporting last week that an extension has been reached a Cfp rep says that is “incorrect.” Previous reports indicated that ESPN had secured the playoff rights through the 2031-32 season. Recent conference realignment has made finalizing broadcast deals difficult. Sign Up Now $10.99+ / month espnplus.

ESPN has extended its deal with the Cfp until 2032, and streaming-exclusive games from the expanded slate of playoff games seem highly likely.
Reports of ESPN’s demise have been greatly exaggerated. There’s no doubt that cord cutting has eaten into the ESPN audience, but ESPN is still the worldwide leader in sports. It proved that anew this week, as it officially announced a six-year extension with the College Football Playoff (Cfp) as that organization prepares to expand its inventory of teams from four to 12 in the upcoming season. That will mean a large boost in the amount of games ESPN can air or sublicense to other media outlets, and it’s likely to lead to a streaming-only Cfp game at some point in the near future.

The concept of an extended Spider-Man universe under Sony’s purview originated in 2013, with plans for spin-off films, particularly one centered on Venom, emerging after ‘The Amazing Spider-Man 2.’ However, due to the film’s underwhelming reception, Sony shelved these plans and joined forces with Marvel Studios in 2015. Since then, Spider-Man has become a prominent figure in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).
Despite generally lackluster reviews for films within the Sony Spider-Man Universe (Ssu), such as ‘Morbius,’ the Ssu persisted and currently boasts a slew of live-action and animated projects in the works, focusing on both Spider-Man’s supporting characters and adversaries. ‘Madame Web’ is set to release on February 14th, but despite extensive marketing, the film has generated minimal interest with a projected low box office performance. Following ‘Madame Web,’ anticipation builds for ‘Kraven The Hunter’ on August 30, 2024, and ‘Venom 3’ on November 3, 2024.

The idea of an expanded Sony’s Spider-Man universe began in 2013, with plans to launch spin-off films, including one centered on Venom, following ‘The Amazing Spider-Man 2.’ However, due to the film’s disappointment, Sony abandoned these plans and collaborated with Marvel Studios in 2015, and since then, Spider-Man has been one of the main characters in MCU.
However, despite Ssu movies generally receiving mixed to bad reviews (looking at your Morbius), the Ssu continued and now has plenty of live-action and animated projects in development focusing both on Spider-Man’s supporting characters and his villains. ‘Madame Web’ releases on February 14th, and despite significant marketing efforts the movie generated little interest with a low projected box office. Following the release of ‘Madame Web’ we can look forward to ‘Kraven The Hunter’ on August 30, 2024, and ‘Venom 3’ on November 3, 2024. The Ssu keeps expanding and the rumors have it that another project...

Nelson Peltz is back with some new suggestions for Disney’s operations, and this time has some thoughts that could lead to big changes at ESPN.
Disney just can’t seem to satisfy activist investor Nelson Peltz. Earlier this month, the billionaire launched yet another proxy fight against Disney seeking to get two representatives from his Trian Fund Management LP (himself included) onto Disney’s board. Peltz wants a larger voice in making sure that his ideas on what Disney can do to improve its financial fortunes are put into action. Peltz’s latest idea? Bundle ESPN+ with Netflix.
This marks the second attempt by Peltz to force his views on Disney in a year. Netflix signed its first major sports entertainment deal with the WWE in January. Bundling ESPN+ with Netflix could jeopardize Disney’s plans for an expanded ESPN streaming service. Sign Up Now $10.99+ / month espnplus.com Pelted...

HBO kicked off the current iteration of the premium true-crime movement with The Jinx back in 2015.
As they prepare to launch The Jinx – Part 2, Lisa Heller and Nancy Abraham, EVPs of HBO Documentary and Family Programming, laid out their strategy to find films involving “crime with a conscience.”
The pair, speaking at the Realscreen event in New Orleans, highlighted recent docs including The Last Call: When a Serial Killer Stalked Queer New York, directed by Anthony Caronna, and Murder in Boston: Roots, Rampage & Reckoning from The Last Dance director Jason Hehir.
Heller said of The Last Call, which premiered in July, “[Caronna] feels that the true-crime in that case was a trojan horse to getting the audience there and then having a much deeper issue about homophobia and the NYPD and all of the bad things that allowed this bad man to stay on the loose and brutalize people. That was...

A new report indicates the Association is very much in play to buy a minority ownership stake in ESPN as it negotiates its next broadcast deal.
The winds of change are blowing at ESPN. Its efforts to create a version of its channels available to streaming subscribers and unencumbered by the need for a cable subscription by 2025 have been well-documented, and has led to a search for investors in the sports network. A new report from Front Office Sports indicates that while talks with the NFL about an investment are going forward, the NBA is not out of the running to purchase a minority stake in ESPN.
ESPN has engaged with sports leagues, tech companies and mobile providers about a potential investment. Earlier this week, it was reported the network was deep in talks with the NFL about an ownership stake. Previous reports have floated the possibility of ESPN taking...

"I wanted to know America, like I once knew the seams of a basketball." HBO Max has revealed an official trailer for a sports biopic documentary called Rolling Along: An American Story, available streaming at the start of February on Max. "A story about all of us." Written & performed by two-time NBA Champion, former U.S. Senator, and lifelong storyteller Bill Bradley. The former NBA star and Senator recounts his life from Mississippi childhood to Princeton basketball fame, to the NBA, to 18 years in the Senate focused on rights, education & growth, and finally his presidential bid. After spending six years writing, developing, and performing his story on stage as a one-man show, Bradley partnered with the Emmy Award-winning filmmaker Frank Oz, Academy Award winner Spike Lee, and Emmy Award-winning producer Mike Tollin to share this performative autobiography.
