A movie with same plot and same story followed by Tamil masala movies... I can't believe that how this film has got 7+ imdb rating... five is my rating... I think movie director thinks that tamil is a national Language.. pakistan terrorist, defence minister and everyone talks tamil only even the kashmir Children also sing Tamil song... No need of a heroine in this film.. sayyesha didn't have any role in this movie...

Political high octane thriller
PavanKV20 September 2019
Kaappaan- Heavy political, octane thriller resting on Surya's hands and it holds well. Director K.V.Anand has narrated a racy screenplay with some message. The story unravels from beginning to end and connects different segments. Surya, Arya and Mohan Lal carries well throughout. Bit lengthy and scratchy editing, but action sequences will cover this up. Some spark and good twists in the second half makes this a decent popcorn flick.

Why Suriya, why? [+32%]
arungeorge131 November 2019
K.V Anand's formula of concocting mass entertainers needs some fixing. He fails to realize that throwing elements randomly into a screenplay (this one co-written with Pattukottai Prabhakar) to cater to every segment of the audience doesn't work in 2019. For starters, he plants red herrings in the first half-hour to make the audience think that the character played by Suriya might be a baddie. (Why go the Ajith route? Just for the heck of it?) Also, why forcefully insert 'farming issues' into a plot that already has plenty along the lines of SPG officers, double agents, corporate bigshots, the PMO, and more?

As a result, Anand is unable to commit himself to make a movie that talks in-depth about farmer problems, which has been the plot-driver for most 'mass entertainers' these days. Neither does he capture the lives and day-to-day functionalities of SPG officers well enough. Everything has a half-baked feel. The PMO is played by Mohanlal, who does a very serviceable job in the role. He can do infinitely better, we all know that. It's Anand's subpar writing that does him no good. What saved Anand in his earlier outings was the deliberate raciness added to his screenplays by writer-duo Subha.

The action set-pieces are nicer when their scale is not the largest. By scale, I mean the consequences. For instance, the fight sequence in a ramshackle house in Kashmir is done superbly. The shots are crisp, the lighting is sharp, and the punches/kicks seem like they land well. Any set-piece involving an explosion? Just the opposite. The train sequence would probably be the most disappointing among the lot.

Arya plays the role of the PMO's son who cares more about alcohol, pizza, and parties. In other words, he's supposed to be the comic relief. In all fairness, some of his lines do tickle the funny bone but for the most part, one gets the feeling that his character belongs entirely in another movie. Sayyesha plays the quintessential big-film heroine with some interesting shades that aren't fully explored. The songs (and their placement) are the standard entertainer fare, nothing out of this world.

And finally, let's get to the man himself - Suriya. After NGK, one wonders what was going through his mind when he was listening to this script. Probably the action bits intrigued him, and the blatant addition of the 'farmer' element meant it would appeal to the masses. Well, too sad that none of it worked out well enough. It's time for Suriya to prioritize scripts that bring out the 'true actor' in him, not the 'mass hero'.

Firstday first show honest review

Went into the theaters with much expectations for the surya kv combo.... And was disappointed slightly during the interval. But movie lives up after the interval. Honestly watchable and great movie. Surya rocks as usual. Harris let down the movie.

Kaappaan Review
Magow-Intermean1 November 2019
Warning: Spoilers
A Special Protection Group officer who is in-charge of security of the Prime Minister, has to identify a grave threat to the PM as well as the nation At the outset, Bandobast looks and feels like a typical patriotic film that Vijayakanth and Arjun had regularly made in the 90s. It begins with an assassination attempt on the Indian Prime Minister Chandrakanth Varma's (Mohanlal, who is made to spout reams of nationalistic dialogue that hardly strike a chord) life. We are then introduced to Kathir (Suriya), an intelligence officer who doubles up as a farmer, and is trying to track down the threat to the PM. However, unlike Vijayakant and Arjun's films, Bandobast often tends to deviate from its mission and ends up frustrating the viewer. One minute there's action, then suddenly there's romance and then there's a social message thrown in. Rather than building up the suspense, the script deflates it. The first half fares relatively better as we get to see the various players involved and their motives (some evident, some hidden) - Anjali (Sayyeshaa), the press secretary whose father was a victim during the opening assassination attempt; Abhishek (Arya), the seemingly playful son of the PM; Mahadev (Boman Irani), the multi-millionaire who sort-of runs the government; Kathir's SPG teammates (Samuthirakani, Prem, Kiran), one of whom could be a mole; and the mysterious assassin (Chirag Jani), who seems to have eyes everywhere. But things begin to go downhill soon after the interval block and Bandobast turns into a predictable fare. The part where it touches on themes like the plight of the farmers and corporate greed - it becomes a clichéd, routine fare. Some of the elements seem to have been taken straight out of Mahesh Babu's recent films, Bharat Ane Nenu (Abhishek's press conference) and Maharishi (the farming bits). There is a certain pulpy quality to KV Anand's films and even those aspects, like the angle involving bio warfare conducted through locusts, feel underwhelming. By the time the film reaches its ineffective climax, we begin to wish for Vijayakant and Arjun to come and rescue us.

This only about the director & writer
ravivarman-3789125 September 2019
Kv himself doesn't know whether this is a farmers movie or movie on spg saving prime minister or movie about the struggles of spg. Kaappan doesn't fall in any of those categories. Writer thought audience as fools & wrote a careless screenplay. Even a area Councillor have a better security than a PM in this movie. Villain bugged every one in the movie even PM's house. Is bugging a PM is that easy.

Tries to stuff too many things into its already 150 minutes long story.
nambivp-3324828 October 2019
I think we are getting bored of stories that pack too many twists and turns and Kaappaan is the example for that. Back when Ayan got released, the way K V Anand narrated the story felt fresh. But, now it is like eating Maggi that's been prepared two hours ago. Tamil directors should seriously consider including songs just for the sake of it. There is a chase(more like a stalk)sequence here that occurs amidst a song. No one of the songs feel like they're necessary for the story. There is no logic in some scenes: a SPG officer sharing an adult joke with the PM, children in Kashmir singing a song about unity in Tamil(really?!), a suspended officer being admitted into a crime scene, a cabinet consisting of people who know Tamil(surprisingly) and a heroine who is there just to pass the Bechdel test(the film fails in that too). The film feels really long. Some scenes test your patience. But, the climax makes up for the lag. Kaappaan wants to be a story about patriotism, a story about farmers and a racy thriller. Sadly, it feels like a haphazard mixture that could've turned into a awesome thriller but didn't. And also, why does every film want to talk about farmer's and their plight? Inability to think of a good storyline? Watch this movie if you're a fan of twists and turns.

Kaappaan needs a Protector
shyammukundan22 September 2019
"Kaappaan" (Protector) Tamil movie.

Mass action thriller movie, which is filled with all ingredients of a 'Masala' presentation.

Suriya, as the special protection group SPG officer assigned for Prime Minister's security, looks good and did well to be, in his character. Mohanlal as the Prime Minister is, in a 'make believe' mode.

5 on 10 for this disaster thriller, neither Suriya's charms nor Mohanlal's matured acting could save this project. The screenplay writer worked hard to juggle the script, to fill it with actions, sentiments, patriotism, farmer sympathy and love scenes, to optimal levels.

Action sequences are creditable and camera work is superb... Just watch the trailer of this movie, to enjoy those, Why waste 165 minutes in the auditorium.

After his 'Singam' success, here Suriya looks terrible and pathetic due to incompetent screenplay.

Maybe, he should scrutinize his roles, more carefully, in future.

Could have been a better work
balajirajasekar-613171 February 2020
Director K.V.Anand's template magic didn't work out to the expected level in this movie.Suriya is the only actor who was carrying the entire movie.Disappointing work by Harris in Sound Track as well as BGM.Except Surya, all other known actors like Mohanlal,Boman Irani,Arya and Samuthirakani in this movie had been underutilized.Chirag Jani makes an impressive debut as Villain.Racy and entertaining screenplay is the appreciable factor here.Cinematographic work and fight sequences are good to witness.Engaging first half and average second half made the movie a normal one.

Disappointing Movie
senthilkg21 September 2019
Warning: Spoilers
I can't believe its the same director who made Ayan. This is a below average excuse of a thriller. The movie focuses on so many themes and loses out in the process. There is only competent agent who can protect the PM and no one else can be trusted..... Also this agent is a organic farmer and moonlights as the head of the SPG. Morning he is in Tanjore farming and by night he is in Delhi. Come on KV Anand and Suriya you guys can surely do better!

Suriya was the only good thing about the film.
aakashsen22 September 2019
Honestly disappointed in the film. Weak screenplay as evident by flashing of various scenes without much continuity. The plot was fairly decent , but as i mentioned, let down by weak screenplay. Personally felt like it lacked the magical touch of KV Anand.

The best part of the movie were the actors themselves : Suriya was a delight to watch, Mohan Lal is amazing as well (though restricted by weak plotline) ,Arya and Sayesha did their job well. The BGM was not upto the mark (only one song was very good, and that itself sounded similar to a recently released Spanish song) .

Overall I feel mad that a wonderfully talented actor like Suriya has been restricted by the film standard. 5 stars for Suriya + 1 star for the other actors.

Boring and unrealistic
gautamia4 November 2019
TV series more realistic than this movie! Why director chose a PM plot if it didn't match with the reality? Why surya so desperate to become a mass hero instead of focusing on the actor inside him?

Kaappaan (Saviour) - the movie title is quite ironic because nothing could save this film.
Chandrasekar_V20 September 2019
Any film needs to have a central plot/story which would essentially form the one-liner for the film. With Kaappaan having quite a few plots like organic farming, India-Pakistan military wars, the director himself seemed confused on what the main story was. Eventually he tries to focus on all of them and they end up as half baked verbal preaches with clichéd dialogues, showing how average the writing has been.

The screenplay is even worse with a lot of scenes appearing disjoint with each other and not flowing smoothly over time. Without any great twists, after a point we all just wait for the movie to end (the sarcastic applause from the audience at the end testimony to this).

There were a few positives in the movie too. Despite bad characterisations, the performances were decent enough. The amount of research KV Anand has put into locusts and organic farming is commendable (wish he'd put in the same for the story too). Also the first half had a few adult jokes which were very much enjoyable. But in the end he wasn't able to make a quality product with all this.

On the whole, this movie would be a big disappointment if you want to witness a good action thriller.

Kaappaan-Saved by Surya sir,Mohanlal sir and KV Anand sir
hfshssn9221 September 2019
Not much better than Ayan and Maattraan but better than his previous 2-3 movies in all aspects.Good movie from surya after a long time.Mohanlal sir is the soul of the movie.Loved the way he portrayed as the PM by Kv anand sir. When the movie ends,i simply give a smile feeling that i am fully satisfied with the movie. There are some loopholes in the movie.Songs are misplaced when the movie going in a serious way. Some jokes are enjoyable eventhough its a double meaning.Screenplay needs more crisper feeling that some scenes got lagged during second half.Kv anand this time shares his script partner with pattukottai prabhakar instead of script writer duo subha. That difference is heavily seen in this movie comparing with previous films of k v anand.
