Exclusive: Condé Nast, like all media players, has been forced to reimagine itself.
Over the past year, the company has laid off 5% of its staff, citing the impact of TikTok and other digital competition; reached a settlement with union members; and dealt with a decidedly choppy ad market.
Despite running that gauntlet, however, the media industry mainstay has notably not curtailed its ambitions to make a mark in film and television. In fact, the company is starting to see encouraging returns on its commitment to a print-to-screen pipeline. Condé Nast now has 14 projects in production or post-production set up with distributors like Amazon, Netflix, HBO and Warner Brothers, plus another 23 projects in development with independent financial backers.
Two titles just out this month are based on Vanity Fair pieces. Breath of Fire, a multi-part docuseries on HBO and Max, explores the multi-million-dollar Kundalini yoga industry and its scandalous leader Guru Jagat.

With its first two episodes, "Agatha All Along" has already announced itself as a Marvel show unlike any we've seen before. Gone are the kid-friendly quips and franchise in-jokes, replaced with bits about kegels and an extended "Mare of Easttown" parody. Despite its fairly universal appeal, the show also feels like it's by, for, and about grown women in a way that few previous Marvel properties have. Plus, it's clearly already focused on themes of feminine power and those who wish to strip it away.
It's only natural, then, that "Agatha All Along" would also be daring (for Marvel) in its portrayals of women's bodies. The show's first episode featured something that's been few and far between in the blockbuster franchise over the last 16 years: a bare butt. When Agatha (Kathryn Hahn) finally uncovers the secret to her own identity, she also realizes she's been drained of her powers. After stripping off her many personas,...

Agatha All Along star Kathryn Hahn has been in a handful of brilliant movies and TV series, but she has hardly gotten the recognition she truly deserved. Having played supporting roles in several films, the actress has built up quite an impressive filmography, spread across different genres, including the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Apart from playing the supportive assistant in the iconic rom-com How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days or the drug-induced Bad Moms, Hahn had one of her most risky roles on HBO’s Mrs. Fletcher. More than just an X-rated miniseries, it would have turned out to be a lot more difficult if it wasn’t for one thing— intimacy coordinators.

Kathryn Hahn has always been more than happy to take on a supporting role. Her comedic career blossomed in the early 2000s with bit parts in Adam McKay films like “Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy” and “Step Brothers,” and she also garnered dramatic bonafides with Sam Mendes’ “Revolutionary Road” and M. Night Shyamalan’s “The Visit.” Most recently, she’s helped fill out ensembles in live-action projects like “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery” and animated ones such as “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.” As her career has developed in the last decade, so too has her center-stage appeal, with roles in HBO’s “Mrs. Fletcher” and Tamara Jenkins’ “Private Life” placing her in lead position. Now, it seems, Marvel is taking notice as they’ve decided to spin her side character from “WandaVision” off into her own Disney+ show with “Agatha All Along.”

Exclusive: Jackson White (Tell Me Lies) has been tapped to star opposite Lily James in the upcoming film inspired by the story of Bumble founder Whitney Wolfe Herd, from 20th Century Studios and Ethea Entertainment.
While it’s not entirely clear who White will be playing, we’re told he’s set for the part of Herd’s love interest. The untitled feature goes into production this year.
Famously launching the online dating platform Bumble after co-founding and departing Tinder, Herd became one of the youngest self-made billionaires at age 31, when Bumble went public in 2021. While she stepped down as CEO last year, the app continues to be hugely popular amongst the single crowd.
Plot details for the film remain vague, as it’s said to be somewhat loosely inspired by Herd’s story. Rachel Lee Goldenberg will direct from her script written with Bill Parker and Kim Caramele, with...

Ron Cephas Jones, who left viewers emotional throughout his breakthrough run on NBC’s “This Is Us,” has died, TheWrap has confirmed via his manager.
Jones, 66, had broken through as an older actor portraying William “Shakespeare” Hill on the soapy NBC drama, father to Sterling K. Brown’s Randall Pearson.
Jones died of a “long-standing pulmonary issue,” according to a statement from his representatives. The actor suffered from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, he told The New York Times in 2021, and had received a double-lung transplant.
The first credited role Jones played was in 1994, but he continued to get work in projects including “Law & Order,” “NYPD Blue” and “He Got Game.” But he hit a new level of prominence as an estranged father on “This Is Us,” one who knew his time was limited and whose arc ultimately depicted his death.

Horror fans, get ready for a new trip to the pet cemetery. Paramount+ has revealed the first look at the upcoming prequel to Stephen King’s Pet Sematary, titled Pet Sematary: Bloodlines. The prequel will explore the origins of the cursed burial ground that brings back the dead, but not as they were before.
The first look image shows a brown dog walking on a dirt path in front of a sign that reads “Ludlow”. The dog is presumably one of the pets that will be buried and resurrected in the prequel, and the sign indicates that the story will take place in the same town as the original novel and its adaptations. The image has a vintage feel to it, suggesting that the prequel will be set in an earlier time period than the 2019 film.

Pet Sematary: Bloodlines is directed by Lindsey Beer, who is making her directorial debut.

Add Vice to the list of disappeared series from cable and streaming outlets.
The documentary series was removed from Showtime and Paramount+ earlier in July as part of a broader set of programs taken off the Paramount Global services. Vice joins the likes of The L Word: Generation Q, Ziwe, I Love That for You and American Gigolo in being taken down from Showtime, which is focusing its programming on key franchises like Billions — which has several spinoffs in development — Dexter and The Chi.
But while the other pulled shows had finished their runs, Vice still had half a season remaining on its order, plus an episode featuring a segment on Florida governor and presidential candidate Ron DeSantis that was taken out of the rotation in May. At the time, Vice News, which produces the series, said in a statement, “As with all current affairs programming there can be scheduling changes,...

Tiny Beautiful Things Review: Kathryn Hahn Leads A Gorgeously-Written Take On Grief, Art, And Family
We've all seen stories where fictional art falls short: films where supposedly world-famous pop stars actually sound just okay, or TV shows where fictional acclaimed poets aren't nearly as talented as they're clearly meant to be. It's a tricky business to write art within art, and more often than not, the end results fall short. Hulu's new series "Tiny Beautiful Things," based on an essay collection by Cheryl Strayed, doesn't have that problem. Rather, the show about a woman who takes on a self-help column writing gig despite the fact that her own life is falling apart features some of the most beautiful, aching, soulful writing I've ever heard, delivered with assured emotion by star Kathryn Hahn.
Hahn delivers a powerful performance here, one that feels as if it continues a conversation started by her dynamic, sexually and emotionally complex turn in the underrated series "Mrs. Fletcher." The two shows aren't related,...

NBC has placed a pilot order for “St. Denis Medical,” the latest workplace comedy series to come from “Superstore” alums Justin Spitzer and Eric Ledgin, as well as Simon Heuer.
According to the show’s logline, the forthcoming comedy will be “a mockumentary about an underfunded, understaffed Oregon hospital where the dedicated doctors and nurses try their best to treat patients while maintaining their own sanity.”
The pilot first received a production commitment from NBC in August.
Spitzer will serve as a writer and executive producer with Ledgin and Heuer under his Spitzer Holding Company’s banner. Universal Television, a division of Universal Studio Group, will produce the series for NBC. Spitzer and Ledgin both remain under overall deals with Universal.

The world of "Planet of the Apes" continues to grow, and the latest film has just cast Dichen Lachman in an undisclosed role, per The Hollywood Reporter. These days Lachman is most recognizable for her turn as the mysterious corporate counselor Ms. Casey on the excellent Apple TV+ series "Severance," but she's been a stand-out in sci-fi projects in particular for years now, with memorable turns in "The 100," "Dollhouse," "Altered Carbon," and more. She also appeared in last year's blockbuster "Jurassic World Dominion."
While Lachman's part in the story is still under wraps, THR's report also includes some plot details for "Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes," and the story frankly sounds pretty wild. In August 2022, amidst a bevy of other cost-cutting but callous decisions, Warner Brothers Discovery began removing shows and movies from HBO Max that couldn't be found anywhere else. It wasn't subtle; dozens of titles disappeared across the course of the month, including "Vinyl," which was created by Martin Scorsese, "Mrs. Fletcher," starring Kathryn Hahn, and an inordinate amount of animated and kids' shows. The streamer didn't stop there, though. By December, one of its former flagship shows, "Westworld," was gone, along with a total of 80 other movies and series according to IndieWire.
Even as creators began speaking openly about the broken trust between artists and a powerhouse network that was once known for letting creativity thrive, other streamers were already following in HBO Max's footsteps. In September, news broke that the Eli Roth-produced series "Hemlock Grove," which stars Bill Skarsgård as a rich kid vampire, would be leaving the...

Reese Witherspoon is reprising her fan-favourite starring role as Tracy Flick, 23 years after the cult-classic film “Election” released back in 1999.
The actress, who played the over-achieving student politician that ran for high school president, will step back into the character as an adult. The sequel to the film, titled “Tracy Flick Can’t Win”, is being adapted by Paramount Pictures for Paramount+, based off the critically acclaimed novel of the same name by Tom Perrotta.
The author’s latest novel- a satirical dark comedy- finds the eponymous Tracy in adulthood and still struggling to fight her way to the top. The book has been praised by reviewers as a “brilliant, biting satire” (Associated Press) and “engrossing and mordantly funny” (People).

Reese Witherspoon is reprising her role as go-getter Tracy Flick in “Tracy Flick Can’t Win,” a sequel to the 1999 political comedy “Election.”
Alexander Payne, who co-wrote and directed the original film, is returning for the follow-up, which is set to debut on Paramount’s streaming service, Paramount+. In addition to directing, Payne will write the movie adaptation with Jim Taylor.
In “Election,” based on the 1998 novel by Tom Perrotta, Witherspoon portrayed an ambitious, Type-a student whose social studies teacher (played by Matthew Broderick) attempts to sabotage her campaign to become school president. Although it wasn’t a box office draw, the movie was nominated at the Oscars for best adapted screenplay, while Witherspoon landed attention at the Golden Globes in the best actress race.

Reese Witherspoon will reprise one of her most iconic early roles – and we’re not talking about Elle Woods. Witherspoon will star in and produce “Tracy Flick Can’t Win,” a sequel to her 1999 cult-classic film “Election” that’s set up at Paramount Pictures and intended for Paramount+.
The original film’s writer and director Alexander Payne is also back on board for the sequel, which is based on Tom Perrotta’s latest novel of the same name and was released earlier this year. Perrotta previously wrote the novel “Election,” which was adapted for the original film. Witherspoon will reprise her role as Tracy Flick, now a hard working but frustrated assistant principal at a public high school in New Jersey, where she is still fighting for the top job.
Both the book and the film have been described as biting, darkly comedic satires in the way that Payne’s original “Election” was.

Paramount Pictures has announced that Tracy Flick Can’t Win — a sequel to Alexander Payne’s cult classic 1999 comedy Election — is being made for Paramount+. Payne is returning as director, with the original film’s lead Reese Witherspoon to produce and reprise her starring role.
Based on Tom Perrotta’s 1998 novel of the same name, Election watches as the high school teacher Jim McAllister (Matthew Broderick) finds himself on a collision course with the over-achieving student politician, Tracy Flick (Witherspoon). The satire drawing parallels between the worlds of high school and politics was Payne’s second feature on the heels of 1996’s Citizen Ruth and proved to be his breakthrough project, netting him and his collaborators three Independent Spirit Awards, a WGA Award and an Oscar nomination, with Witherspoon landing her first Golden Globe nomination.
The Election sequel is based on a follow-up novel by Perrotta, which was published by Scribner in June.

“The grand experiment of creating something at any cost is over,” warned David Zaslav.
But the President and CEO of Warner Bros. Discovery believes that the “golden age of content” is “absolutely not over”.
This comes as Zaslav revealed plans to raise its savings target to 3.5B, up 500M over its initial target.
The new owners of HBO et al. have been cutting content costs across the company, killing a number of high-profile series such as J.J. Abrams’ HBO drama series Demimonde, which was reported to have a budget of mid-200M, as well as slashing series such as The Big D, Chad and others on the Turner networks side.
It has also got HBO Max out of the reality business and killed its kids and young adults content on the streamer.

Brought to you by the letters G-o-n-e: The content purge at HBO Max continues as the streaming platform has pulled about 200 older episodes of classic kids’ show “Sesame Street.”
The removal of the “Sesame Street” episodes and other recent content by HBO Max appears to be part of new owner Warner Bros. Discovery’s belt-tightening moves, aimed at reducing streaming-content payment obligations.
As of Friday, HBO Max listed 456 total episodes of “Sesame Street,” with a selection from Seasons 1, 5 and 7 and the full lineup from the most recent Seasons 39-52. Of those, only 29 are from the earliest seasons. Previously, the streaming service offered about 650 total “Sesame Street” episodes, including episodes from Seasons 2-4, Season 6 and those from every season between 8 and 35.
Reps for Warner Bros. Discovery and Sesame Workshop did not respond to requests for comment.

Warner Bros. Discovery’s crusade against its own content continued this week as 37 more titles were unceremoniously pulled from HBO Max. Children’s programming and animated series were hit especially hard following news the company was tamping down efforts in those areas. Reality TV on HBO Max has been similarly decimated, a decision underscored by layoffs in the company’s unscripted division earlier this week.
“As we work toward bringing our content catalogs together under one platform, we will be making changes to the content offering available on both HBO Max and Discovery+,” Warner Bros. Discovery execs explained per Deadline. “That will include the removal of some content from both platforms.”
“At the same time, we’re already starting to bring our content catalogs together like the launch of the new CNN Originals Hub on Discovery+ and a curated collection of Magnolia Network content coming soon to HBO Max,” the statement continued.
