Wisdom?
ulicknormanowen28 February 2020
Warning: Spoilers
"Wisdom" is Sofia in Greek.

A waring is issued before the movie begins: an affair out of wedlocks is punished by law in Morrocco.Sofia ,who belongs to the upper middle-class, must marry .Her parents' bright prospects might be thwarted by the scandal ;they have big agricultural plans and Sofia is told so :"opportunity knocks for your family ;don't get in their way".Sofia's cousin, who married a French man and who is fluent in this language -which Sofia does not really masters- abets her : she epitomizes the "modern" woman in a society in decay : there's a short scene ,that of the orange juice , which might seem insignificant: it's actually revealing. All seem to want to save Sofia ,all are concerned with a God who is no longer Allah but money ;hypocrisy runs rampant in this family whose purpose is to keep up appearances ...

The real victim, sacrificed on the altar of the moneychangers of the Temple, is Omar .A working class boy, who has to support his family because his father is dead : in this society, this is pivotal ,for he has not yet established himself as the Man,the head of the family ;he appears first as a bashful listless boy. The way Sofia's wealthy family treats him takes cynicism to new limits; it's pure blackmail:falsely accused of rape, a five-year sentence hangs over his head as a sword of Damocles ,he has to resign himself to marry this girl he does not love ; his mother, anyway, does not try to defend him :after all,it's a way of getting out of poverty : what does it matter if the baby is not his?And anyway ,should he go to jail, who would feed his poor family?

In the last part of the movie, one sides with Omar;his only fault was to offer comfort to Sofia when she was fired from her job , he never touched her.He manages to keep his pride and his dignity : he spits at his wife,he does not care about her offspring .When he is given a hefty sum (and promised a promotion to his job) ,his answer may seem crude: it's in fact admirable, a rebel stand against the blight of corruption.

The movie abruptly ends ,with a false happy end ,and the festive atmosphere contrasts with the hateful triumph of the bourgeois family with a capital B.

a stunning debut film by a Franco-Moroccan director
barevfilm8 November 2018
The keynote of the festival this year has been a strong focus on female filmmakers. Among exceptional distaff side films seen here, was one by a veteran with a venerable track record, Margarethe von Trotta's documentary "Searching for Ingmar Bergman" and the Moroccan family drama "Sofia" helmed most skillfully and meaningfully by a young first tîme Franco-Morrocan director Meryem Benm'Barek - a stunning debut if ever there was one. The latter film was entered in the section known as Un Certain Regard, (A special look) whose objectives is to discover new talent and lesser known directors. To summarize the effect on the audience of Ms. Ben'Barek's opus, suffice it to say that it was followed by a twenty minute standing ovation in the presence of the entire film lineup. The story, told largely in facial closeups, is basically that of a young girl not particularly attractive, who is found to be pregnant with no presumable father in sight. Eventually he will be tracked down and a proper marriage performed but at the very end the young man, earlier a bushy haired loser but now a clean cut young nan with a proper job, assures Sofia that he will do his best to be a proper father to their child but -- cut and dry -- "don't ever expect ne to be in live with you". Sounds pretty simple but this is a subtly moving story that peeps behind every corner of Muslim morality with a highly critical eye. All the principal actors, young and old, are excellent in their roles. Clearly a case of talent plus unerring direction. The film is half in French and half in Moroccan dialect but thus is definitely an Arab film and this writer, personally, cannot wait to see what will come next from this director and her actors....notably Maha Alemi in the title role

impressions

The only sin - the desire to say/ present too much. Family, a young mother and her less honesty, the baby and the presumed father, memories and lives together, the relation mother daughter and the friendship between cousins. And, sure, the solutions. Something seems to much and something seems be not enough. Result - portrait of Moroccan realities. Not the most precise but good source of many impressions.

Don't waste your time 👎🏻

One of the worst movies i've ever seen in my life!!! I could barely finish the 1st half hour. Poorly executed, no plot, no storyline, no acting just nothing!! The worst part that it doesn't even treat the single motherhood in Morocco, as they were promoting during its release!! A BIG WASTE OF TIME !
