The Masterpiece series Miss Scarlet and the Duke is titled simply Miss Scarlet now, following the departure of Stuart Martin’s William “The Duke” Wellington. But Kate Phillips’ Eliza Scarlet has another fellow with whom to solve crimes, and a video from the set of Season 5 has Phillips introducing fans to new costar Tom Durant-Pritchard. The video starts with Phillips telling the show’s devotees that they’re going to love Durant-Pritchard. But she has trouble finding her new costar, dashing around the set in her search before realizing he’s the man behind the camera. “Hi, guys! We are coming to the end of Season 5, and it’s very nice to meet you.” The actor, whose TV credits include Feel Good and Baby Reindeer, will play Alexander Blake on the series,...

Big change on Masterpiece’s popular drama Miss Scarlet and the Duke.
Stuart Martin, who played William “The Duke” Wellington in the previous four seasons, will not return for season 5. Kate Phillips will return as Miss Eliza Scarlet for a fifth season of investigations, and the series will be retitled Miss Scarlet.
“It has been such an incredible joy to bring Duke to life through Rachael’s beautiful, brilliant writing, and to get to play him for the past four years,” said Martin in a statement. “But it felt like the time was right for Scarlet to explore new stories and challenges for now, as the show continues to grow and evolve. I will miss working with my amazing partner in crime Kate and the rest of our brilliant family and team, but I’m excited to continue following Eliza and her escapades as a huge fan and newly enrolled Scarleteer!

Claire Foy has revealed how the director on her first major acting job made her feel bullied.
The Emmy-winning star of The Crown said the director of the BBC’s Being Human pilot was “unkind” to her during filming on the 2008 show.
Foy did not name the individual, but Declan O’Dwyer is credited as the director of the Being Human pilot episode. O’Dwyer’s agent has been contacted for comment.
Speaking on Josh Horowitz’s Happy Sad Confused podcast, Foy accused O’Dwyer of giving her the “worst note” she has ever received from a director.
Foy alleged that he told her to “start acting, darling” as she shot scenes as the character Julia. The revelation drew an audible gasp from Horowitz’s audience. “I didn’t know what I was doing and he shouted it at me,” Foy remembered.

Check back for latest … The fall TV season was upended by the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, but the beat goes on, though heavy with reality and other unscripted fare like game shows. As Hollywood begins to recover from the dual labor actions, here again is Deadline’s annual list of premiere dates for new and returning TV series.
The roster covers hundreds broadcast, cable and streaming programs debuting through 2023. It includes series and season debuts, shows returning from hiatus and some one-offs such as live sports and awards specials but not movies. The list includes shows that had been set for the fall season but are in limbo for now. Note that older 2023 premiere dates are listed at the bottom.

Austin Butler in Apple TV+’s ‘Masters of the Air’
The 2023-2024 primetime television season looked nothing like previous years, with reruns, unscripted shows, and international imports populating broadcast networks’ lineups. The WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, though undeniably justified, took quite a toll on all the networks. Fortunately, the strikes have been settled, production has begun on nearly every new and returning series, and the midseason January lineup hints that things are slowly returning to normal.
Here’s a look at the shows scheduled to launch their new season – or series – premieres in January 2024. NBC’s Chicago shows – Chicago Fire, Med, and P.D. – will kick off new seasons on January 17th, with the Law & Order franchises returning on January 18th. New highly anticipated series debuting in January include Echo, Expats, Masters of the Air, The Brothers Sun, and Sanctuary: A Witch’s Tale.

Midseason is the new fall.
As Hollywood and the broader industry continue to recover from the debilitating dual actors and writers strikes, the 2024 television landscape is coming into focus. All of the broadcast networks have set return dates for most of their shows, with the postponed Emmy Awards now set for January 15 and no usual Premiere Week to speak of.
But as series return to production with lower episode counts this truncated season, here again is Deadline’s annual list of premiere dates for new and returning TV series.

As producers across the globe continue to feel the effects of inflation on their budgets, a growing number of European countries have been seeking to alleviate some of that budget squeeze as they battle it out to entice foreign projects to shoot on their home turf. One front runner in this race is Serbia, which has been quietly establishing itself as a trusted and attractive destination for global producers.
The Balkan country not only has one of the lowest production costs in Europe but offers a tried and tested 25% to 30% rebate on local spend, an established professional film crew, varied locations and a host of world class film studios that have seen the country fast become a sought-after destination for international productions to set up camp.

We have good news and bad news for fans of PBS’s Grantchester. The good news is that the British mystery drama has been renewed for a ninth season. The bad news is that the upcoming season will be the last for Tom Brittney, who has played crime-solving vicar Will Davenport since season 4.
‘Grantchester’ renewed for season 9
It’s only been a few weeks since Grantchester Season 8 premiered on PBS, but the show’s cast is already looking ahead to season 9. Filming recently began on the upcoming episodes, which will be Tom Brittney’s last. The actor – who took over as vicar after James Norton left the show in 2019 – has decided to move on.
“I’ve had the most incredible time playing Will Davenport for the last five years,” Brittney told PBS. “I got to solve crimes with my best friend, and work with the best cast and crew I could ever ask for.

Last year PBS gave audiences the charming Victorian-era mystery series “Miss Scarlet and the Duke.” Though akin to other PBS and BBC shows like “Ripper Street,” creator Rachael New’s mystery series feels so charming “because Being Feminist (capitalization intended) isn’t what it sets its focus on.” Season 1 concluded with Eliza Scarlet (Kate Phillips) and William “the Duke” Wellington (Stuart Martin) possibly embarking on a romance — which, for a television show, can be a blessing or a curse.
The two certainly had a flirtatious bond, but a relationship could affect Eliza’s desire for a career, given William’s disdain for Eliza’s work. And in the second season premiere, which aired Sunday on PBS, it seemed like the pair were together. Then abruptly, William and Eliza realize a relationship isn’t in the cards for them and break up.

On a recent visit to Serbia, actor John Malkovich announced plans to team up with fellow leading men D.W. Moffett and Matt Dillon to build a state-of-the-art film, music and media production facility in neighboring North Macedonia, a small, mountainous country of just two million inhabitants.
It might seem a risky gambit for a country with a modest domestic film industry that services few foreign shoots. But Malkovich – a self-described “son of the Balkans” whose father is of Croatian descent – insisted that the studios have the potential to transform film and television production in the region. Dubbed Stonebridge Studios, the project now awaits approval from the government of the ex-Yugoslavian republic, which according to the studio’s backers stands to gain €1.6 billion (1.6 billion) in Gdp as international productions flock to the country.
While the backing of an A-list celeb ensured the announcement would raise hopes – and eyebrows – across the region,...

Once again, we find ourselves already surprisingly further into a calendar year than feels appropriate. Even for those who don’t make it their sole mission to stay up-to-date with every new development in the TV world, the majority of the past year has brought with it a daunting number of series.
Some of those have been brand new shows, either the result of conscious release date delays or interrupted production schedules. Others have been series imports that enjoyed full runs in different parts of the world before getting a U.S. debut in 2021. And as the year continues to develop and the awards calendar switches over into its multi-holiday phase, we’ve also seen the return of established favorites.
We try our best to help sift through the steady stream of newcomers every month, but there still always seems to be more than any casual viewer can keep track.
