No manga background

Warning: Spoilers
Honestly, for me the biggest issues for RE were the lack of cohesion in the story and the portrayal of Sasuki's feelings. The story passed me by and afterwards I'm wondering what actually happened, and I'm not alone. The changes of his persona are confusing with no tell-tale signs of his allegiance or thoughts. The previous seasons made his feelings more clear by far and they were a treat. But this season felt more like an a puzzle missing all the important pieces.

Disappointing direction
a-woodley8617 April 2019
The 1st 2 seasons were really fantastic and were a continuation of the same timeline.

This season jumps ahead into the future, and without having read the original manga, the story is very confusing for the 1st half of the season. Various MAJOR changes have taken place without any explanation or context regarding integral (and much loved) characters which is extremely confusing and ultimately leads to initial frustration. What makes matters more challenging is the change in animation style, with various characters looking different.

This is probably why the reviews for this season are so mixed! And to be honest, I originally gave this season a 5/10. I was very annoyed at where the series had gone.

That being said, the 2nd half of the season is much much better. The story has loads of pay-offs that you're hoping for and the story is very engaging. Character archs come to fruition in mostly satisfying ways and the season as a whole was ultimately very enjoyable. I thought the main villain was a little weak to be honest, but there were many secondary bad guys that were very memorable, particular the priest.

I enjoyed this season far more on 2nd viewing as I understood the various characters better and could follow the story arch in more depth.

At the end, after 2 viewings, I believe this season is a high 7, even 8 out of 10. With season 1 and 2 being high 8s or 9s.

Gather some info before plunging in!
rohanraket-238939 October 2020
If you haven't read the manga and are planning to watch this series after tokyo ghoul. then I recommend to see the story of manga from youtube or elsewhere that happens after tokyo ghoul. A small but important bit of info is lacking that may create confusion at first. As I don't know why but they have tried to make the anime real shorter. It would have been much better if they had made it more elaborate as in manga. Like this it's really a waste compared to the manga. Nevertheless 7!

Took a wrong turn
ilijazivkovic-150793 June 2020
I honestly gave this series a shot because of an image i found online of the main character, Kaneki Ken. The first 2 seasons were an absolute masterpiece if you ask me, i enjoyed every minute of it, even tho the endings felt a bit rushed, it was still pretty enjoyable and different than the rest... People seem not to enjoy the ROOT A though i liked it, maybe even more than the first season, although, here, things slowly start getting out of hand. Throughout the whole season 1 of RE i was completly lost and confused on whats going on, all these sudden introductions, plot twists, no background, even the names were hard to remember... there was so much going on but yet no explaination what so ever, pure mess. Without some background coming from the manga, i dont think i'd be able to fully understand the show without the fandom wiki. Though, the second half made up for it, it cleared most of the confusion,Lots of scenarios i was hoping for came true and, yes, Kaneki did it ;). I feel like the first half should get revamped to say the least. The changes in the artwork dont bother me, theyre barely even noticable. Overall 8.5/10, the season "3 and 4" 7/10.

Went from quite interesting to an absolute bore
v61226 April 2019
Warning: Spoilers
I enjoyed watching the first half, to be honest. It was entertaining and I can feel the tension between Kaneki and Haise. But as it progresses (especially after that sudden change to Romantic genre, yes I still can't accept Kaneki and Touka being together, after Hide suddenly expressed his love for Kaneki), the plot became super boring. I feel like I am watching an entirely different anime. So many plot holes, the characters acted so different from before without any explainations. I was quite confident in the beginning half that it would not end up like the second season. But at the end it failed me completely. Still I have to give 7 stars to the first half. And omggggggg the way Hide say that he did all that just because he loves Kaneki.... my heart aches for him.

I am a fan boy but..
mr-altex29 September 2018
First, compared to the other anime based on manga, Tokyo Ghoul :RE is not stretched to the extent that single page of manga will cover whole 20 minutes episode (yes, i am talking about you, Black Clover). It's actually quite the opposite. I feel that the content of the 12 episodes is a bit too compressed and it does not do much favors to the characters, or fluidity of the story. But it's hard to claim that the original manga is flawless as it can be quite confusing, especially with the amount of characters involved in the story at this point.

This sequel is a bit worst than the previous ones. It uses the same elements, same sound bites, same mind flops, but it is mixed weirdly together and the action is fairly full compared to the creativity of the first 2 seasons where every action seems to be more impactful.

Still, it's Tokyo Ghoul, and in 12 episodes, it has a lot of great moments, especially the first half.

3 Stars out of 5 Stars

Dubbed: People calling this a reboot obviously didn't watch this 2 season series very well. While the show is confusing at first, toward the middle of the first season we start piecing together what happened to Kaneki after Root A, and why he's now working for the "bad guys"(?). Who are the bad guys in this franchise though like it seems like both sides have good and bad. Anyways, Ken Kaneki now goes by the name Haise Sasaki and he now works for the CCG (the organization that's trying to wipe ghouls off the face of the map). Plus, his attitude and behavior is shockingly different than Root A, so you can only expect the man was brainwashed. My main problem with this 2 season series is that they throw in way too many new characters. It got hard trying to keep up with everyone, especially since a lot of these characters don't bring much to the overall plot. I loved seeing all the OG characters back in the second season, and although the quality of the show looks like it dwindled compared to the first and second miniseries , I definitely enjoyed the conclusion to KenKaneki/Haise Sasaki, but it could of been way better. Even the very last frame of this show seemed like pure fan service.

The quality dropped so much, I feel this is not Tokyo Ghoul anymore.
bogdanbalostin26 January 2020
Too many characters...

To many plot points...

Story happens without any explanation. Is there a story anymore? Just characters added into the mix without resolving the previous character's story. Mindless death and slaughter. Ideas without any sense turned into philosophy.

No, this is not what Tokyo Ghoul is. And I've watched it until the end. In the final 2 episodes, there are some redeeming qualities, but why season 3 exists if it doesn't make any sense?

Pretty good storytelling
shampymp28 July 2018
This season had weird pacing relatively but as soon as the characters were established and they started flourishing, the story became clear. The characters slowly build up and they are quirky(quinx squad). It is evident that there will be more focus on the older and familiar characters in the coming seasons but this was a necessary deviation from the previous installations. It had a lighter tone and I did become fond of Haise and Shuu. The quinx squad had a heart. Pretty interested in where it is all going. It was like a good dream for the broken and that is what makes a story whole which is what I like about Tokyo ghoul series as it shows the descent or ascent making it very relatable.

Season 3...
alexsnowman28 May 2021
The 1-2 seasons was very different and intresting. Nice animation, perfect soundtraks, emotional and deep. Then we have season 3 (2 parts) not bad, but has a weird fast way to develop characters and story. If season 3 was better then we would talk about a fantastic anime, now its Just a good intresting anime. It worth the time to watch it all.

Lacking everything good about the first two seasons
Morejambo548 January 2021
In the first two seasons all the characters are developed and begin to be familiar to the watcher and are the main part of the story, not in this they aren't. That development is thrown in the bin as Ken loses his memory. Not only that but then they introduce a couple hundred thousand new characters for no reason and begin to follow their meaningless story's which nobody cares about and that has no influence on anything that happens. It stupid how much worse they managed to make this. The action scenes were still good and the final few episodes did give a small bit of redemption mainly because they finally brought back the characters we actually care about. Overall this cannot be compared to the original series, which I am now calling it, it simply isn't as good. 5/10.

6/10 Season 3 Too much information
poli-chronis8 March 2023
Warning: Spoilers
It is a shame cause the previous seasons were good. This one is full of plot holes and there are too many characters that serve no purpose. The story is confusing and tiring. Some fight scenes are nice, but this is not enough to make the 3rd season enjoyable. The sudden reappearance of some interesting characters from previous seasons was a pleasant addition, although there is no explanation or background story. Must admit that it was kind of predictable that Amon was not dead. I see that most people prefer the manga and maybe reading it before you watch the anime, is the best way to fully understand the storyline. The ending was nice, but again, expected.

Good, satisfying though particularly confusing.
mirrorsystemx14 September 2022
Here we go with that nice movie series. Well, it gets my head round at moments. Tell me one thing, though, how are ghouls and humans gonna live happily and peacefully together when ghouls just eat ppl for breakfast? Apart of that, nice monsters, nice action,... There is some soul in the movie series, it is all overall pretty well designed. I wish I could skip some of the human drama and stuff, but whatever, let there be some. Personally I prefer things different, against monsters that are not as humanic and we just deal with 'em, but in this movie ghouls are rly described as humanic (mb too much, I mean, in games ghouls I see are just a bunch of horror creeps).

Once again the series brings an intense emotional rush during scenes with this season. However, it is hard to say it's on par with the the first seasons. It is still very worth watching.

Warning: Spoilers
I preferred season 1 & 2, purely because it was more interesting. I just felt that In the last two, they were just trying to drag it on, and things started to get rather confusing. Only the manga showed how Kaneki became Hasaki, so must of been rather confusing for Anime only watchers. Still watch it though! I was an avid fan so had to watch it. I have multiple posters from seasons 1 & 2 but only one of season 3.

Season 3

This review is only based on the anime of season 3. The plot of this anime is good but the execution of the plot is terrible and very confusing, the characters were very boring and generic and didn't have any character depth, the animation was bad at most it would be considered okay at some points it was very sloppy but it just wasn't appealing to watch. The music was whatever I really enjoyed the opening song but other than that it was very forgettable.

Story - 3/10 When watching the first episodes of season 3 of Tokyo Ghoul I was intrigued and wanted to know how the rest of the show was going to play out, sadly I was very disappointed and was left confused. The season literally has no plot line at all, it's just a lot of the Quinx group fighting ghouls and a lot of meaningless characters. Even after I finished the season I still don't know what I watched. Apparently the story line is supposed to be that Ken Kaneki is now Haise Sasaki who is a quinx (a group of one eyed ghouls fighting ghouls) and can't remember his past life but even when the season ends, he never gets his memories back or does he???? Near the end of the season when fighting his hair turns black and he is supposedly his past self again, meaning he got his memories. I just wished that he got his memories back in a better way instead of just randomly turning into his past self and staying his past self. I have no idea what this season was about and ended up being so confused about everything.

Characters - 2/10

Wayyyyyy too many characters are in this season and most of them just end up getting introduced and then dying without any character depth. The show even tries for some of the villains to have some character depth but it just seems so boring and useless. Most of the characters in the show are very plain and boring, such as anyone from the Quinx. The personalities and objectives of these characters are also so dumb except for the guy who ends up passing away. There's the girl who only plays games, there's the edgy guy who just wants credit, there's that one guy who looks like a girl. But even most of the villains are just so stupid, we have the nutcracker who they try to make her have some character depth, but literally all she wants is to be pretty? No, seriously that's her character depth. Even when it came to characters from the past season they just CHANGED, Touka Kirishima literally has no personality what so ever anymore, her brother just isn't the same at all. For a show that is basically revolved around the characters, you would think that they would have good characters and some depth but nope, you are just left feeling confused, annoyed and bored.

Animation and Fighting - 3/10 Let's start with talking about the animation, so overall the animation was whatever nothing amazing nothing terrible just very bland, basic and sloppy at times. When it comes down to the fighting it's also just bland but its very boring like VERY boring. Not once did I get hyped up for a fight scene I just sat there looking at the screen waiting for something to happen. What I also realized when watching the fighting scenes was that literally every time Haise Sasaki was fighting he would have to change into Kanekae to become stronger, it would have been fine if they did this once or twice but THEY DO THIS EVERY SINGLE TIME.

Music - 4/10 The music was decent, I loved the opening song but other than that most of the other songs in the season are easy to forget.

Overall, watching this season was a waste of time. When I finished watching the season I felt so drained, I literally feel like I lost energy by watching this season. Just don't watch it, just don't.

Completely lost
mossjfoley-243696 August 2020
There isn't any real storyline. There are way too many characters to follow any one of them not to mind their intersecting stories.

That's not to mention the groups and their motivation.

I liked the first season of Tokyo ghoul, the second completed the story but it was a bit of a tangled up storyline. This... this just seems like they took a massive amount of source material, threw it in a mincer and didn't really care about the end product.

Very good story.

Well first things first JUST WATCH THE SERIES I stopped watching tokyo ghoul in season 2 and that was because when season 3 came out everyone said these words in the comments " ITS SO BAD....UGHHHHH. NOT LIKE THE MANGA" well let me tell u smt its good.i started watching it recently and I LOVED IT. I wish i didnt stop watching it. Sure the first season was the best no doubt but the other seasons are still good. season 3 tells a very emotional story that gets to you. Maybe its not like the manga but who cares. If u want the manga go get the manga. This is an anime series that is still amazing. Well i dnt knw what else can be said than amazing. Although i do feel like they rushed it a bit. Thats why im giving it a 9 out of 10. i feel like they could have made the series more spectacular. But it is what it is and it is still amazing. I highly recommend u watch it. I wish there were more episodes.
