great moments, but needs to slow down
hydrorion8 February 2019
There's a lot happening really fast in this episode. Some great character interactions coming from the introduction of Number One, and beautiful emotional moments with Stamets, Tilly, Burnham, and Saru. It felt a lot more emotionally authentic than a lot of the previous episode, where it seemed like a lot of interactions were heightened needlessly to create drama and stakes. My main complaint, like a great deal of the previous episodes of season 2, is that everything is jam-packed with action and exposition and there is so much happening that should have been spaced out between several episodes. Still, the show has improved greatly from season 1, even if they have a ways to go. Here's hoping some of the groundwork they laid for new stories in future episodes with the plot pays off and isn't just forgotten.

Better
tronba8 February 2019
This episode has sci-fi in spades, and that is very good. We get to know some more of the crew, and this episode both answer some questions and starts some new ones. My only big caveat with this episode is how Burnham always is the solver or catalyst to solving the problems. I am all for strong and knowledgable characters. But why have a starship with crew and scientists if one person can fix 95% of the issues that arise? That's not good star trek or storytelling in general. Use the crew (more) and let the captain lead and this would be good star trek.

Why they are always in a hurry?
AliensReservoir15 February 2019
Far better than last week, still some weirdness, but i did enjoy the story between suru and the girl, even i knew he will not die (I thought it will evolve to something else). They also tried to put some fun/pun, which is nice and relaxing. But overall it's a nice episode with a more solid story "a la" true star trek, they need to slow down though... We want to relax while watching a star trek not running. (The Orville is way better in my opinion, but this particular episode reconciled me with STD)

Another great chapter.

Warning: Spoilers
This episode felt very much like classic Trek to me. It was the classic ship is broken down, crew is seperated type of episode that we have had in all the modern Trek series. It also brought in a wonderful truly alien first contact situation that we rarely get to see. It truly felt like something we could have seen on Next Gen.

The story between Saru and Michael was really touching even if I never thought for a moment that they would kill him off. I absolutely love Doug Jones's work as Saru. I'm so happy that after years of wonderful prosthetic character work he has finally given something really meaty to sink his teeth into.

We also got a lot more on the alien entity tormenting Tilly. She was from a species that lives in the fungal network that is harmed every time Discovery uses the spore drive. This would go a long way to explaining away the absence of spore drive in the future.

All in all a wonderful episode.

"...Stamets to Burnham, we got Tilly!"
Gefricules9 February 2019
Why is everyone on this star ship only reporting to Burnham!? Is this series about the crew of a star ship, or is this series about a Mary Sue named Burnham?

The captain seems to be absolutely unimportant in STD in both seasons and a military structure is almost non existent. It is kinda anarchy, with the Burnham person on the top. Bad writing...

Nitpicking

It may sound nitpicky but the Kelvin scale isn't measured in degrees. It's just K. Note to the writers.

This Episode was Awesome!
suanniiq9 February 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Time to trigger thumbs down, because someone has the audacity to openly admit to enjoy DISCO!

PRO!

Drama-to kill Saru or not to Kill Saru!!

Best line: Saru asking the crew, "do any of you know more then one language!!??" (Guilty of that myself)

Getting high on mushrooms, Tilly going down a literal mushroom hole!

Tower of Babel moment

Paul and Jett banter in the spore room

Tully's head gets drilled, and

Not Love Boat in Space!

Con:

Wish they did more between tilly and spore connection-they are pushing hard and fast about it, so I hope there will be a pay off with it in the end.

Wish they did more with the sphere, but only so much time to write everything in.

Wish they did more the Number 1, and hope she is back for MORE!!!

In some ways-season two is becoming Search for Spock (not like the awesome move), just thinking about it and having a little fun....in the end do they really need Spock this season...I hope there is a grand payout for it...

Yes, A Bit of a Mess
Hitchcoc3 March 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I have the advantage of reading some of the reviews, both positive and negative. Others have done a great job. I still have trouble with giving something like this a one just because it is different. That said, I have spoken before of my tiredness with Tilly. She is by far my least favorite character. She is given way too much screen time and focus in the stories. In this one there are characters all over the place. Some we've not seen; others who have passed through. Develop some of these. I'm always put out by the science. How they manage to come up with solutions to huge problems in thirty seconds. Also that machine that looked like an hourglass that just happened to be handy. Then there's the three quarter inch drill used to drill into Tilly's head. I wonder if there was anything inside there. And the near death scene and the miraculous recovery and response. And how wonderful that they figured out what that massive entity was up to. Oh, well, it's fast and entertaining.

Interesting chapter with many flaws
Sermell_Sino10 February 2019
This episode has continued the old-school Star Trek style that old school trekkies love so much. The storylines are exploration-based, requiring a lot of active thinking on the audience's part. The general direction is commendable. That said, I didn't like this episode particularly much. First of all, there are so many subplots on move at once, so it may confuse the viewers a bit. The show tried to be faithful to old trek, but the old trek does not present everything in a rush. Can be improved. Most importantly, I am getting tired of Sonequa's acting style. Recently, I feel like whenever she is trying to show strong emotions, she speaks in a slow,over-stressed tone that sounds not unlike giving a public speech to strangers or a students. She tries so hard to be moving and it feels extremely unnatural. In the last episode, when she addresses Tilly's problem, it really freaked me out: Why would you talk that way with your close friend? I don't know why didn't I notice this problem last season, probably because it didn't happen. Oh Martin-Green, please stop giving us more of your artificial emotions. Despite all this, this episode is very interesting and solves some continuity issues. My vote is seven.

Shilling for STD
tm-1687810 February 2019
This episode was better than the last. It's still a mess with two many storylines that either aren't fleshed out at all or don't really provide much depth to draw you in. There is really 4 storylines here and i personally don't thing this helps the episode. Perhaps this is because there are so many writers. Honestly i think sticking to the tried and tested formula or perhaps one main plot line and a sub one works best.

At least we got to see the crew work together a bit on this one, which is something that has been enjoyable in all previous ST's and Orville and so far sadly lacking in this one. It's a shame we can't change how unlikable some of the characters are.

I will say Sonequa Martin-Green's acting was better here than in previous as well. But again there are too many "emotional" / soap opera corridor moments. Again though Saru gives the best performance but even Jones can't save this episode from the inept writing.

All in all it's another boring episode, and that's perhaps the most damning thing about it.

But the main thing that irks me slightly is it seems, looking at the reviews, there are a lot of 10/10's. Really? So this is the best of the best is it? It's not even the best SDT episode and no where near the best episode in just the ST franchise.

I know everyones opinion is their opinion but honestly it's getting silly now, they come across as so astro turf.

Warning: Spoilers
I've been watching Trek my whole life. I've seen it all. Read it all. And while there are good episodes and bad episodes, this series is next level. It's hitting all the marks. It has everything that Trek lacked in the last 50 years. More excitement, more action, swearing and more!! Love it!!

Lazy Writing
TAEMO8 February 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Yes, the show may be more like Star Trek now, but it is still too stupid and unearned to be really good. First of all, the mystery of the sphere, which was set up to fast and not fleshed out enough, in my opinion, but okay, it is a mystery. The fun part is solving right.? Right? No, because it is not solved. Saru just says, I know what it wants, but how he did it is never explained. I can set up any problem if a satisfactory solution is not required. Imagine Holmes identifying the murderer by just saying the name, and no further explanation is given. All the hints that were layed out before were irrelevant or did not mean anything for the solution. That would be lame for the viewer and only half of the work done by the writer. Sure there were the light flashed, I dont know. Imagine again a teacher giving you the solution to an equation but not explaning the steps that led to it. The unearned part: May be I dont remember it from the first season, but since when do Saru and Michael share a bond that deep. I did not whats the recap maybe it was shown there. But if the relationship was any good one remembers. Saru knows half the crew longer than Michael and he chooses her to help him for his suicide. Sure the scenes were a little touching, but not touching enough. I did not get their strong bond. Maybe its just me

All in all, kind of a filler. The red sphere looks like one of the red bursts but nobody ever mentioned a possible connection. And may be there is none, but then make it blue or green.

Not for me
thomas-mcaulay-118-5344119 February 2019
Warning: Spoilers
I think they make the pacing so fast that you just overlook the incredibly contrived plot. How convenient that Stamets has a device that can translate blob language and interface into a human brain just lying around in the lab! And what's with drilling someone with a black and decker? It's just weird.

I found the schmoltsy scenes extremely drawn out and over the top. Nobody was ever fooled into thinking Saru would actually die. As the episode ended i looked at mate mate and we just said exactly the same thing...What the......??

A disjointed bizarre mess.

it's starting to shape up
blancaseubo9 February 2019
Looks like the writers are finally starting to find their voice. While they're masterfully postponing whatever it is that seems to be the main plot, we get an episode more in the Star Trek spirit with the discovery of a new life form, the contemplating on society & moral values, themes of economic exploitation & racial submission. Although the writing felt somewhat forced here and there, and could have definitely done without the melodramatic overacting, it's a rather well-made multidimensional episode that manages to keep the viewer on edge with its fast pace and plot twists. Looking forward to see more ones in this direction! There's hope for Discovery yet!

Worst episode in an already disappointing season
Kevin-429 February 2019
I don't think I can stand any more of Sonequa Martin-Green's "emotional overflow" face. I can't believe that her one-expression performance passes for acting these days and her complete failure as the main protagonist infects the entire show.

This episode sort of oscillates between emotional drivel and meaningless technobabble without conveying any sense of urgency. Most of the crew are still placeholders devoid of personality. It is no wonder that the only "likable" character in this show is Saru. Maybe it's because under that heavy make-up is the only talented actor in this cast but even Doug Jones can't save writing so inept it re-defines "bad" and this episode serves as a glaring example how this show just doesn't work within the Star Trek universe.

Unless we get to see a complete turnaround in the next epsiodes this show deserves to be cancelled before it further damages Star Trek as a brand.

Uneven

But fun . . .

First, let's just dispense with the melodrama. At no point does anyone with a measurable IQ think any harm is going to happen to anyone. That's just soap opera Super 8 mush mash wasting DJ"s considerable talents. That being said, the new character (rescued a couple of episodes ago) brings a swarth to the events that echoes McCoy of TOS.

GREAT Star Trek episode!!
WKYanks8 February 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Random comment from a user:

"The main flaw in this episode however was somewhat poor characterization. First, Pike's conclusion that the alien megastructure was belligerent seemed very random and was transparently for story purposes to create a short-lived conflict. I came out of that scene thinking less of him, which shouldn't have happened."

This didn't bother me. I had Kirk visions swirling in my head here. If I'm the Captain, I interpret anything that snags me out of warp and holds me like a fly on fly-paper as an immediate direct threat to my ship and crew. He DID listen to Suru and Michael when they provided a viable option to it's intent.

"More fundamental though is the oddness of the sudden deep relationship between Burnham and Saru. We've had no evidence on camera they particularly liked one another. Their relationship on the Shenzhou was distant and prickly, and even though Saru came to forgive Michael, we didn't really see a budding friendship as we did with Tilly. I understand that for narrative purposes Saru had to be close to someone, and since he knew Burnham the longest (and she is the main character) it should have been her. But this relationship just seems...unearned. Which is a shame, because viewed in isolation, not knowing anything about the arc of Discovery as a whole, this character work comes off a lot better."

I agree here. I had the same thoughts as Michael and Suru were conversing before his assumed death. But.... I finally got a very good emotional performance from Michael so I didn't mind it that much. I wish I could have seen such depth when she was pulling away from Ash. Well done SMG!! They have mended their relationship throughout the series. They certainly weren't at odds like they were early on. I think they truly have brother/sister feelings for each other. If I wasn't convinced before, I am now.

Good to see Reno back on screen.... although I thought her nip and tuck with Stamets was a little over the top. Not too bad though. I enjoy her delivery and dry humor. Nice to see Staments get past his pouty self and become engaged once again. Is Jet going to end up being Discovery's Chief engineer?

A note about "Engineering"... in the episode they said the "spore room" wasn't part of main engineering, but when Michael said she was going to engineering to help with the shields she showed up there... and when the bridge calls engineering, Stamets or Tilly answers from the "spore room".

Tilly.... another knock-it-out-of-the-park performance by Mary. (stands and applauds!!) She's just awesome. So much heartfelt emotion and different emotional states conveyed and it all seems so REAL. You go girl!

Suru... I was watching the scene where he's talking Michael into cutting off his ganglia (sp) and I thought I'd missed something and thought about checking IMDb to see if Doug Jones was still a part of the crew after this episode (lol). Great performance by Doug and more great background concerning the Kelpians. I liked how the short 'The Brightest Star' added to this episode as well. Had we not had that, it may have been too much to absorb. This was the first time Discovery tugged my emotional heartstrings.

Very good "Star Trek" story here. Yes, it's been done before (I tire of hearing that because I challenge anyone to come up with something totally new in Trek), but this was done VERY well and wasn't a carbon copy of another trek episode.

The pacing was welcomed; especially after last week. Only a couple "cuts" seemed a little quick.

I believe we've seen the beginnings of learning why this spore drive can't be sustained in trek. It seemed May's primary concern was that her people that were being adversly affected (killed?) by Discovery's jumping. More to follow I'm sure.

Love how they melded the Universal Translator problems into this episode. Probably the best it's ever been done in trek.

Michael had a couple "I'm Michael and I have to save the world" moments, but it wasn't that bad in this one.

Also enjoyed meeting #1 from the Enterprise. "Cheeseburger and fries" ... lol She will become more intergral in this plot I'm sure. I think the actress player her well.

I also liked, as I did the Klingon hair "fix", how they addressed the holocommunicator "issue" in trek canon. Maybe they should have never went there, but at least they addressed it and we can move on.

I don't know that I can knock this one. A GREAT Star Trek episode in my book and I think Discovery's finest effort to date.

Well done. What a monumental improvment over last week!

I don't think the show needed the weird and random comedy from Tig Notaro this season, but there is no denying it is starting to improve in quality. When we do finally see Spock hopefully things get even better.

Sphere
paultapner9 February 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Liked the first episode of this season. Loved the second, which was good proper Star Trek. Thought the third a bit dull as all it did was advance storylines and not that far either. And spare me from more Klingon politics.

However:

This is just as good as two, if not more so. We get the return at the start of someone I'd never expected to see again. Not Spock. We get the return of someone I'd hoped to see again. Also not Spock.

And then we get a science fiction story of the week, like episode two, which like that is also proper Star Trek.

Great material for Saru follows. Great scenes happen in engineering. There's tension and mystery right to the final act.

Which will keep you on the edge of your seat thinking is this really going to happen? And no spoilers about that.

It then ends on a very good cliffhanger.

A long episode, but it manages the length. Just does though highlight the fact once again that all the characters who aren't Saru or Mike who work on the bridge need a bit of time in the spotlight, so here's hoping they get it in due course.

An Obol for Charon
Prismark1017 February 2019
Rebecca Romijn turns up as Number One from the Enterprise. The character played by Majel Barrett in The Cage. If she is a recurring character surely she would have to be given a name unless she really was christened Number One.

She brings news of Spock to Captain Pike who plots a course to follow his escape shuttle. However the Discovery is threatened by a mysterious sphere that has disrupted the ship's communication systems.

Meanwhile Saru has become ill and Tilly's life is also in danger as the blob of consciousness is attached to her.

There were hints by Saru all along that the sphere might be trying to communicate. Even he does not realise it at first. I was going to say have they forgotten Star Trek 4 but that has not happened yet.

There was too much chat in this episode in all sorts of languages and too many people becoming ill.

I was surprised to discover that Stamets is not the Chief Engineer of Discovery. It leads me to question what is his role and where is the chief engineer?

The episode paid tribute to Doctor Who by reversing the polarity.

THIS is Star Trek!!
martymasta8 February 2019
Warning: Spoilers
I was worried that episode 2 would be the only episode that would truly feel like star trek, I was wrong! This episode is a masterpiece! It has tension, mystery, great acting and it is exactly what I want from a Star Trek episode! It even offers an explanation for why the holo comm was not in TOS! It still doesn't explain why it was introduced as new tech in ds-9, but it is a great step in the right direction, I actually am looking forward to the upcoming episodes as opposed to season 1. This can truly be something amazing if they keep making episodes like 2 and 4!

The worst and the cringiest episode until now
javajunkay8 February 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Granted, this was an emotional episode (or at least an attempt at it), but I cannot relate to the characters or like them. That being said, it speaks a lot about the overall quality of the atmosphere in this show.

The episode is riddled with unwatchable cringe scenes including over the top emotional dialogues that was terribly acted and a horrendour scene in which two characters are apparently high on mushrooms (psilocybin).

This episode highlights the lack of likeable charaters in STD, and is a nice summary of this TV show as a whole.

+ 1 for seeming to start solving how the spore drive will not be used in the rest, and another + 1 for Saru almost dying (I was hoping he actually would)

This show grows on you!
ingra8814 February 2019
Warning: Spoilers
The first season, may have got off to a poor start, but look at the show now, it's wonderful! So much excitement going on and four different stories at once at such a fast pace. Tilly's problem is yet to be solved as is the Spock story. Drilling a hole in Tilly's head sounds more gory than it appears, as is her being consumed by a gelatinous creature. Poor Tilly's

What's interesting is the series is using a well tested formulae for the first time in Trek, to keep the audience fixed to the series, that is to give the season a catalyst.

Already pretty good, but getting better
etmachina26 February 2019
I liked Season 1 overall despite some shaky plot points and throwaway lines, but Season 2 is better so far, IMO truly capturing some of the charm of TNG.. and this episode continues the trajectory.

Character development is broadening. I'm glad other people on the Bridge are finally getting some lines instead of just standing there looking cool.. The Rebecca Romijn cameo in this ep is great -- I had to check the credits to confirm it was her -- hey, good acting! That whole scene had strong TNG vibes.

Overall I like that SMG is a little hammy with her acting, generally her semi-Vulcan act is OK, but sometimes I struggle to remind myself that she was supposed to have grown up on Vulcan when the emotional scenes swing SOOO EMO...But the childhood flashback scenes in Season 2 have been helping to connect the dots.

I welcome Tig Notaro's bizarre monotone and that the show isn't afraid to be goofy in spots. I like that this show focuses way more on aliens and Klingons than any ST movie or show since TNG, the gold standard IMO. I appreciated that this episode and several others in Season 2 have seemed a bit more self-contained. Big fan overall of where it's going.
