New Decade, Same Formula
god_savant1 December 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Computer animation and changing social norms can make it hard for older anime to appeal to modern viewers, particularly a franchise like 'City Hunter' that's steeped in Japanese bubble-era pop culture. There's many ways around this, like introducing a new setting or expanding the world through spin-off series, such as how the original 'City Hunter' spawned 'Angel Heart'.

Instead, 'City Hunter: Shinjuku Private Eyes' recycles a leftover plot from its 1980s print run, overlaid with modern trappings like smartphones, UAV drones, and rap music by Lotus Juice. Instead of drawing 'XYZ' in chalk, Ryo's clients now write it using an augmented-reality app on their phone. Instead of nukes, the villains are chasing a virtual-reality headset linked to an army of military drones.

Beneath a veneer of modernity, it's the same grade-school slapstick and go-nowhere romantic subplots of a filler TV episode. Maybe that's enough for starving 'City Hunter' fans, but being familiar with the franchise might be even worse. See the theatrical poster? That's the entire cast, and since all but three of them are returning characters, returning fans will instantly guess who the villain is. A whodunit mystery doesn't work when there's only one suspect, and Ryo's prowess with his iconic Colt Python isn't impressive when he's shooting at robots already shown to be bulletproof.

Badly-animated robots, too; for a feature-length film, the animation feels very cheap. All of the robots are clone-brushed CGI models, looking identical and moving in perfect unison. Worse, they animate at a smooth 24 frames/second, clashing with with the static backgrounds and choppy animation of the human characters. A car chase through Kabuki-cho in the intro is nicely animated, but it's short and unrelated to the plot.

'Shinjuku Private Eyes' is an attempt to modernize 'City Hunter' without actually changing its stagnant formula. Fans have seen it all before, and there's nothing here for the modern anime fan to latch onto.

Not a remake or a reboot, but not that good either
keikoyoshikawa1 May 2023
The City Hunter anime series from the late 1980s and early 1990s are a genre on their own. They were fun and silly, and for that time period the animation and storyline were perfectly fine.

Unfortunately, trying to make another series for the 21st century just doesn't work. Sure, the animation is modern and arguably better. But the characters and situations don't fit as well.

The Good: The main characters Saeba Ryo and Makimura Kaori have not changed. Their antics and relationship remain the same. While that is in a way good, this time it feels more like a lost opportunity.

The Bad: I think it can be argued that having an older Ryo with a bit more maturity, and Kaori's relationship with him advancing beyond simply bashing him in the head could have made for a better City Hunter.

The fans who watched City Hunger 30 years ago have grown up, and the series needs to do the same. Many aspects that made the series entertaining should be kept, of course; but others need to change.

In the end, I don't think we needed yet another City Hunger; I think we needed a believable progression of the main characters keeping with the times and the core audience.

Enjoyable

As a City Hunter longtime fan, I loved this movie. Was it without flaws? No, but this was an attempt to pull the famous 80's manga/anime into current times, and I think it's a success. Nothing new plotwise, but again, it wasn't supposed to be something out of the box, just an adaptation where old and new fans can experience the essence of City Hunter. Ryo is a pervert and you betcha there's gonna be a lot of that. I personally find it hilarious but can understand if new fans don't like that. p.s. I'm gonna mention this cause my friends were confused when I introduced them to City Hunter (and this movie) having previously watched Angel Heart. Angel Heart is an alternative universe with the same characters and is not a continuation of City Hunter.

Excess of fan service does not help
Ryo_Wufei1 December 2020
Warning: Spoilers
This review will make more sense if you have been a City Hunter fan for a long time.

All this movie is about sending you back to what City Hunter used to be by pulling all the strings you already know from the series:
  • All the situations are too familiar (litterally everything is predictable, from what is going to happen to what the characters are going to say). Love hotel scene, naked bar scene, shower scene, rooftop scene... ask it, you'll have it.
  • The soundtrack reuses old (and great) pieces but in awkward moments. They seem forced on you. Some are also cut in a weird way. The few new musics are very bad and do not fit.
  • When you see Cat's Eye as a guest, you have expectations. Well, don't. Besides being a taxi for a couple of minutes and putting Umibozu in a "ridiculous Vegeta moment" they are useless...
  • The robotic and technology flavor makes the lack of a decent bad guy more obvious. Fighting an army of clone robots was disappointing. Even the "cute" robot was a bother, but I guess every story needs its annoying Jar Jar Binks now...

... There are so many things to say about what went wrong here including CGI that does not blend in, some of the drawings and animation that are not up to standard for a "movie" format...

In short, this movie was a lazy attempt to surf on a long and excellent franchise by forcing ALL of the tricks from the series in 90 minutes. It felt really sad. I cannot recommend this to anyone...

Love it

Typically City Hunter <3 Don't care about the bad comments or else, if you were a fan of Ryo Saeba, if you were in love with the anime, just watch it.

Indeed, our new "world" doesn't correspond to the mentality of this anime but just forget our world and just be in the anime.

Worth to watch once.

Not a fan of this manga series but watched it because of Sir Jackie Chan.

It's an animation movie with a little bit of story, action, comedy. So should be watched once.

A Classic Attempting To Make A Comeback In The 21st Century Of Anime Films...
silicontourist17 October 2022
Its the fifth film of this old Japanese anime (animated) series and its an attempt at rebooting it to our more modern times. With that said its a no go as, wonderful as it is, it exists in a different formula of film making and, is therefore too dated for the 21st century approach to anime.

Its a tale of a protector and his team, as bodyguards/detectives, in a case that was meant to be an easy job...BUT! The rest is the usual formula of most detective style story's; solve clue's, find the answers and solve the case. The City Hunter series has its own style (like any other character in any type of story/film) and thus, it has to remain faithful to the recognized formula. Some of the complaints from people of this film are obviously not aware of formula's attached to film/series characters! You would not change anything about DC/Marvel heroes or they would not be the same people we love! Its a strong and well weaved written story plot that makes a series successful and, although this films story was okay it was too weak to make it great!

If you are not a fan of Japanese Anime you will not like this. If you are the modern generation type who only watches violent, blood & gore animated films etc...you will not like it either. I still think its worth a watch if you want to know what the anime style is like.
