Sex & Nudity

  • There are some mild innuendos, but nothing too bad.

Violence & Gore

  • Book One only features violence when a recurring character attacks others with lasers. Book Two contains more violent moments, like head-butts and stylized injury detail, albeit still disturbing.
  • Season 3 in particular contains scenes that may be disturbing.

Profanity

  • At least one use of "suck" in the Season 2 premiere.
  • Name calling, threats and other verbal put downs are commonplace.

Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking

  • A saloon bar is seen in book 4. However, the bar sells tea rather than alcohol. The saloon is only shown due to the characters being in an "old west car"

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • The show regularly deals with mature themes including: divorce, grief, trauma, depression, abuse, peer pressure, bullying, child neglect, control, trust, empathy, betrayal, abandonment, identity and death. These issues are always handled in a serious and realistic manner and aren't played lightly.
  • A disturbing robotic monster is seen attacking the main characters several times throughout the series as well as frightening undead roach-like monsters that can devourer a person's soul.
  • Book Two doesn't have much emotional situations, but still has scenes of threat and horror. Some initial episodes have only mildly scary bits (like a deer that constantly shapeshifts in bizarre ways) while later episodes are more intense. Bullying, peer pressure, and social acceptability are reoccurring themes in this season, but unlike in Book One, they aren't the focus.
  • In book 3, two main characters are killed off. One in episode 5 and the other in episode 10. Their deaths, while brief, are somewhat graphic and very distressing.
  • The series has a lot of suspense, mystery and mild horror. The train essentially kidnaps people and thrusts them into dangerous and unpredictable worlds with life or death situations that they can't easily escape from.
  • The main characters (who range from young children to older teens) are frequently in danger and not everyone makes it out alive.
  • The intensity, subject matter and maturity increases with each season, with book 3 currently being the most mature and intense.
  • There are many scary sequences, which become more and more intense as the show progresses.
  • The series is overall very dramatic, intense and suspenseful (especially the second half of book 2 and all of book 3). Some younger viewers will certainly find several scenes upsetting, scary or just stressful.

Spoilers

The Parents Guide items below may give away important plot points.

Violence & Gore

  • Atticus is shot and turned into a undead, soul eating-roach creature.
  • In book 2, a giant train wheel splits a humanoid character in half, and his grey, jelly-like insides are shown throughout the episode. He's still alive, but he's later killed when he's smashed into a train wheel in motion. We see him secreting a lot of greyish blood, with focus on his face while he's screaming; some drops splash into the attacker's unaffected face. This scene was censored in Latin America due to its violent and graphic nature.
  • A boy is thrown into a giant screen, which breaks it. Later one character explodes, splashing grey blood all over the place.
  • At the end of Book 3, one of the main characters (who is an older teen) is disintegrated, graphically turning into ashes as a black roach monster eats his soul.
  • Halfway through book 3, a beloved talking animal character is murdered and the characters hold a funeral for her in the next episode. Some viewers will find this emotionally distressing.
  • In book four a giant moth get electrocuted by a giant bug zapper, and is appeared to be dead. It's later revealed that the moth survived.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • At the beginning of book one, Tulip is led to believe that she will die if her number goes down. This later turns out to be untrue.
  • In the last episode of book 3, one character laughs maniacally after being driven to insanity while numbers cover his entire face. This scene is very unsettling and disturbing. Later his life force is sucked by a monster, and only his ashes remains.
  • In book 1, it is heavily implied that a character was close to committing suicide.
