Not the best, but one of the scariest
Pererns16 January 2019
Normally I am critical of found-footage horror, as it usually is unnecessary and brings nothing more to the story. Usually found-footage movies would do better as a "regular" movie. This is not the case for Gonjiam: Haunted Asylum. With new cutting-edge technology, and a reason as to why the actors know how to work a camera, it serves this movies purpose excellent. There is little shaky-cam and other "effects" that you would usually see in found-footage, which in my opinion ruins the movie.

The story itself is pretty standard, 7 young "ghost hunters" enter an old insane asylum, mainly for views and profit, which makes it more realistic than other similar movies. The pacing of the movie is pretty slow, and nothing really happens for the first half, but it's worth it!

I originally wanted to give this a 6, but considering this is a horror movie, and one of the scariest of it's sub-genre I've ever seen, I bumped it up to a 7. If you want a scary movie without too much plot, this is the movie for you.

Builds A Lot Of Suspense
Foutainoflife7 February 2019
This is a found footage film. It's not much different than others out there but it did a great job of building tension once it got going. I think that it should have moved a bit faster at the beginning.

I was disappointed that there wasn't much of a story about the hauntings. It seemed like it only gave enough information to imply that it might have been haunted. I wanted more details.

I thought it had a couple of creepy moments and overall, I enjoyed it.

Second half is worth it

If you're a fan of scary B movies, the scares are amazing on the second half. I really hate the blacking out/glitching effect the movie did. I enjoyed watching it when everything rolled out.

Nothing new, but effective nonetheless.
lost-in-limbo22 August 2018
How much you get out of this Korean found footage horror will depend on your mindset for this particular sub-genre. There's really nothing new here - think along the lines of "Grave Encounters", but better executed with the use of upgraded technology to stream live any paranormal encounters. The premise is run-of-the-mill; a small crew from a horror web series "Horror Time" grab cameras to explore an abandoned and isolated asylum late one night for a live broadcast. However they get a lot more than what they initially bargained for.

No surprises in how the situation plays out, however the atmosphere is laid on thick. Pure dread, looming shadows and creaking sounds engulf a dank, colourless location that will simply swallow you up. It very much reminded me of the tone/ambiance found in Session 9, maybe even creepier. One thing though, no way would you get me in there after midnight.

After a slow beginning introducing the characters, chemistry dynamics and a little history of the asylum including other thrill-seekers that have disappeared after entering the building. It all works up quite nicely to the obligatory jump scares and equipment failure. What seemed simple at first showed the plot had a surprise or two up its sleeve in its paranormal loophole, which is all centred around the cursed room 402. There were a couple rather effective set-pieces, yet probably not enough incidents in what feels kind of drawn out. Still those moments we do get, and there are a good 3 or 4, are well-shot hair-raising thrills.

Found footage done right.
Otkon4 November 2021
It is well-paced and just the proper length.

The setup is good.

The actors are competent.

And most importantly, the third act does not disappoint, drag or get all weird for the sake of being weird. There are some genuinely suspenseful and scary moments.

But yeah, rethink the high heel boots if ever invited on a live-streaming haunted horror adventure at a location highly rated by a cable news outlet.

Experience The Horror
CinemaClown22 October 2018
A terrifying found-footage horror from the South Korean film industry, Gonjiam: Haunted Asylum travels a well-worn path, packs the expected genre tropes, and implements the same formula that other similar examples before it did. And yet, everything about it is surprisingly better & far more effective, possibly due to its genuinely tense build-up & excellent rapport between its committed cast.

Pretty good!

It's definitely worth the watch if that's what you wanna know. The acting was great and funny! I felt like I actually cared for the characters. The premise is very interesting, but some scenes seem inspired by Grave Encounters. I was instantly hooked from the start but towards the end, things stopped making sense... I felt like they rushed it and didn't bother to explain anything... but it was a fun movie!

Worth it
johnnyutah3118 September 2018
I'm always a bit hesitant to watch found footage films with the haunted house/asylum narrative. They all usually follow the exact same formula with almost the exact same scares. Honestly this one is no different. But of course I watched it because there was no doubt I wasn't going to. And even though it's similar to films like "Grave Encounters (2011) and such, it builds an impressive amount of tension and makes what you'll expect seem fresh. The setup is basic, a production crew goes to a supposed haunted asylum for their reality show to capture ghosts live and break into a room (402) that's locked and so far impenetrable. The first 35 mins are pretty introductory but does a good job of making you feel good with the crew. Once they arrive at the asylum, things unfold naturally at a steady pace with the last 20 mins or so being quite hair raising. Seriously, there were a few instances where things got spooky, for real. This isn't a movie that does anything new or reinvents the "Haunted Asylum" film, but what this South Korean film does do is let you know just because you might know what's going to happen, you shouldn't be comfortable still in the manner that things play out. This one might be in my top 10 for the year.

Solid Ghost Movie
midwestchaser13 June 2021
Warning: Spoilers
We get to know enough about the characters to care about them. The scare scenes are well done but what is actually attacking them is left as a bit of a mystery. We don't get much closure on what happens to the characters after they are attacked and possessed. Did they all die? Did anyone escape? What happened after the chick gets dragged off by the naked guy? I'm sure the intention was to leave it all to the viewer's imagination but we get that so much with these kinds of movies. I wish just once a movie could have the courage to answer some of these questions instead of taking the easy way out and letting us use our imagination to fill in the gaps. Either way, solid movie that doesn't feel like it is just rehashing similar movies.

Nothing that you haven't seen before, yet a competently-made POV horror flick! [+48%]
arungeorge1318 October 2018
What makes 'Gon-ji-am' worth checking out is probably the fact that a place such as this really exists. Plus, most actors have used their real names and portray themselves in the film (adding to its 'authenticity' factor). So, when some of them eventually die in the film (hell no, that ain't a spoiler!), you get a feeling that they could really be dead (à la 'Cannibal Holocaust' and later, 'The Blair Witch Project', and many more).

The 'live-stream' aspect does lend some real-time tension to the film. The cameras, thankfully, aren't too shaky (like in most POV horror flicks) and there are some added technological twists (like the drone!) which aren't fully explored. Yet, the writing and the horror itself is so derivative that you can clearly predict what's going to happen (if you've seen 'The Blair Witch Project', 'REC', 'Paranormal Activity' 'The Tunnel', or 'Grave Encounters' or similar films).

That indeed is the biggest bummer! 'Gonji-am' probably came out, maybe, a little too late. If you haven't explored the found-footage genre much, this could intrigue you to a fair extent. There are jump-scares but Director Jung Bum-shik struggles to sustain the horror throughout the film. The actors are not-bad choices. Some of them manage to convey the dread really well.

I watched this by myself on a cold, rainy night and honestly, it left me a little disappointed. Nonetheless, you can give it a watch if you like the genre and horror-films in general!

Super creepy horror film that means business
Woodyanders22 January 2020
Warning: Spoilers
The crew of a horror web series get a whole lot more than they bargained for when they decide to do a live broadcast inside of an old abandoned asylum that's rumored to be haunted.

Director/co-writer Beong-sik Jeong relates the familiar, but still engrossing and effective story at a constant pace, takes time to develop the mostly likeable characters, makes excellent use of the rundown sanitarium main location, and ably crafts a supremely spooky and unsettling gloom-doom atmosphere. Moreover, Jeong warrants further praise not only for adroitly maintaining a dark serious tone that gets more progressively grim and upsetting as the plot unfolds towards a devastating downbeat conclusion, but also for providing a nice underlying theme on greed versus rationality with the team of paranormal investigators deciding to stay in the asylum even when things start to get hairy because they will make more money if a larger number of people watch their live broadcast on the internet. The sometimes deliberately rough cinematography and the notable absence of a score add a strong sense of chilling verisimilitude. An on the money supernatural shocker.

"Haunted Derivative" would've been a better title.
S_Soma4 September 2018
Warning: Spoilers
Is GONJIAM: HAUNTED ASYLUM a staggeringly atrocious movie especially worthy of castigation and derision? Well, not really. It is what it is, it is probably exactly the movie it intended to be, and if you consider the type of movie it is to be a kind of genre, it's as good an example of its genre as any other.

But one does have to face the fact that there is nothing about this movie that is original, groundbreaking, interesting, unique, especially creative or gifted, artful in it's depictions of something horrifying, or any other particularly positive adjective. As others have pointed out, objectively, it's virtually the same thing as GRAVE ENCOUNTERS and about a dozen other similar movies with similar settings and themes. If GONJIAM: HAUNTED ASYLUM was the first example of this type of movie instead of the thirtieth, it would be far easier to think more favorably about it as a movie. I quite understand that it's virtually impossible for a movie to be truly original at this point in the history of moviemaking. But a movie should at least try to add a little SOMETHING to the field and not be a relentless rehash from stem to stern.

I imagine the collection of extremely negative reviews of this movie stem from the fact that every scene and/or stylistic choice within it has been seen before by many of the reviewers. There's nothing interesting or different here; it goes across the palate like a leftover of a dish that was much better when fresh and where any of the negative aspects of the original are only emphasized in the reheating. To find something "fresh" to say about the movie it does have the distinction of being in Korean, and requiring English speakers to read their horror in subtitles. Which is sorta different... I guess...

Some of the ingredients that you can't help but recognize:

All of the money scenes in GONJIAM: HAUNTED ASYLUM are so dark that if you don't watch the movie in a completely darkened room you can't see virtually anything. The movie is set in the nearly ubiquitous context of a hospital/asylum that had an evil director and mistreated/tortured patients that died under mysterious circumstances. Large tracts of the movie are taken up with extreme close-ups of "terrorized" faces which fill up two thirds of the screen and you can't see anything else that's going on. There's lots of screaming until well past the point where you get a headache. The characters are at the asylum/hospital to record a program for entertainment purposes and their desire to produce the program overrides their common sense. The facility is laced with cameras and lights. The characters are fitted with cameras to record their experiences. Nothing of interest happens until the last few minutes of the movie where suddenly the proverbial fertilizer strikes the ventilator. Elements of reality get bent out of shape as the supernatural beings vent their spleens on the characters. And so on ad nauseam.

Given the fact that it is exactly what it tries to be, just in Korean, GONJIAM: HAUNTED ASYLUM dutifully and even slavishly replicates every positive and negative aspect of this kind of movie from the early happy, carefree scenes of the attractive young adults blissfully "partying" unaware of the horror that lies in front of them and blah blah blah to the camera glitches and unexplained power outages in everything from flashlights to computers giving you the high sign that the ghosties are about to happen in the scene.

If you're the type of person who is prone to watching found footage films featuring a supernatural/paranormal bent, the "action" described in the above two paragraphs will be so familiar to you that you can virtually imagine and predict every scene in the picture. It's very difficult to give this movie a positive review given that inescapable truth. If you experienced anything new and fresh or even somewhat different in GONJIAM: HAUNTED ASYLUM, then you've been living under a rock until recently and have really lucked out. For the rest of the planet, not so much.

Koreans are great at Horror too!
SoumikBanerjee199616 June 2021
I have been a staunch advocate of Found Footage features since the day I came to know about their existence! It's either the added touch of pragmatism or the lifelike depiction of ghastly stuff, that very much intrigues my mind & my conscience. Thus, I'm always on the lookout for these first-person perspectives.

Here, the story takes us to Gonjiam Psychiatric Hospital, an age-old asylum in Gwangju-si, South Korea; that has witnessed a myriad of hauntings in recent times and moreover shares a dark past of its own. When two teenagers suddenly disappear, a group of seven people on behalf of a Horror reality show decides to go down there and investigate. Meanwhile, trying to capture plausible supernatural sightings on a live feed.

Even though blatant skepticism comes into play at the initial stages, little did they know; things were about to get real!

It's fraught with a sense of dread, nail-biting disquietude, and above all it made me gasping for breath on several occasions! A deftly crafted piece of horror that has benefitted from such a creepy location and the all-inclusive chilling atmosphere attached to it! Alongside a bunch of believable acts and likable leads; this one merits consideration.

Except for a handful of setbacks concerning its Screenplay and pacing; the broader outcome does convey a strong impression nonetheless! Had the Writing been a bit more construed and further elaborated, I would have certainly given higher remarks.

Solid (if derivative) new horror film
randalrauser8 May 2018
The writer of Ecclesiastes says there is nothing new under the sun. That's certainly true with "Gon-ji-am". It borrows liberally from other films in the genre -- most notably "Blair Witch Project," "Rec," "Unfriended" and "The Eye" (the 2002 Taiwanese film) but it borrows well. Somehow the sum of the parts is greater than the whole -- two days after seeing "Gon-ji-am" it is already fading from memory -- but it is still a pleasant way for a supernatural horror fan to while away a couple hours.

A mediocre horror film
HLX19921 June 2018
Korean directors have produced some really exciting works, but lamentably this is not one of them. Right from the start, all the elements in the movie already looks too familiar: adventurous explorers, renowned haunted house, self-shot video clips, etc. I have got the feeling that nowadays directors of horror movies must be innovative enough in order to impress the desensatized audience, because really, for them there is already nothing left to exploit on the beaten track.

Solid found footage scares in sinister locations
kluseba23 October 2018
Gonjiam: Haunted Asylum is a found footage horror film in the key of The Blair Witch Project, Quarantine and Grave Encounters. It follows a group of three young women and three young men who want to explore abandoned Gonjiam Psychiatric Hospital where several patients committed suicide and the director went missing.

The story offers nothing new to the genre and is quite predictable from start to finish. Parts of the final third are confusing and tough to follow. Two of the six main characters remain rather faceless and the movie should have focused on the four more developed characters only.

On the other side, the film gradually shifts from a light-hearted tone to a bleak supernatural horror film and the last third is particularly intense. The locations are carefully chosen and the fact that this building exists for real makes the movie more authentic. The manipulative group leader, the shy youngster, the expressive Korean-American and the naive nurse student are all interesting characters that complement one another perfectly. The fact that some of the scares turn out being made up while others are truly supernatural phenomenons adds a little twist which makes it hard for the viewer to know what's fake and what's real. Despite a low budget and the use of handhold cameras and simplistic drones, the movie is filmed with care and doesn't overuse shaky parts.

In the end, Gonjiam: Haunted Asylum is an entertaining film for horror cinema fans and one of the better found footage horror films in recent memory. It doesn't reinvent the genre and the story could have been a little bit more creative but the scares work out rather well and the final thirty minutes will keep you on the edge of your seat.

An exceptional exemplar of horror
I_Ailurophile18 October 2021
For a found footage horror film, 'Gonjiam: Haunted asylum' strikes me as perhaps a little more polished in its production design than similar features. With that consideration in mind it's easy to engage with the movie without special concern for indelicacies commonly associated with the genre. The isolation of the setting, the almost Brutalist-style architecture of the institution, and careful, meticulous set decoration quickly work to start weaving atmosphere. Factor in the deep shadow that dominates every moment past the exposition, and the film does a fantastic job of forging a chilling air just from our instinctual fears kicking into overdrive, as though we were really in the facility alongside the characters.

'Gonjiam' relies substantially on that pervasive ambience of profound disquiet, and a significant portion of the runtime passes with this alone very capably sustaining an exquisite sense of unease and dread. Furthermore - as viewers watching a genre film, we pointedly know to anticipate Something at an unknown time, and there's a second level of suspense added with that knowledge, waiting for the other shoe to drop. After aberrations do eventually manifest, there are sparing instances of what one could say are "conventional" horror scares, but in my opinion the painstaking construction of the picture so thoroughly primes us for heightened terror as to amplify those frights far beyond common expectations. More to the point, the visions to greet us mostly present with what I, personally, find most concretely unsettling in the genre - unnatural posture, movement, noise, vocalizations. These build off the consuming atmosphere to engineer intensely hair-raising scenes, and once the most powerful feelings of acute, particular distress pass, I cannot overstate how fulfilling the experience has been.

It's been a very long time since I've expected horror movies to provide real scares. Mostly I just hope for a creepy, cringe-worthy fun time, and if a filmmaker can manage to evoke sensations with a strong atmosphere, or offer some singularly spine-tingling sights, then these just make it all the better. I entered 'Gonjiam: Haunted asylum' with no foreknowledge or especial assumptions, and have been absolutely blown away by what I got. I can't remember the last time I watched a horror film that elicited such sharp, protracted, continuous, and lasting autonomic and emotional responses. I'm so impressed!

The effects are outstanding, the cast is great, and all aspects of the picture were clearly considered with utmost care. Gratifyingly, the movie completely enraptures us with the active experience of the web series crew without any true need for suggested lore and background to be expanded into a dominant narrative, as we so often see happen in similar tales. In the past I haven't held found footage films at large in very high regard, but I've recently watched a few very well made ones - and this easily bests them. Director Jung Bum-shik, co-writer Park Sang-min, and everyone else involved is to be applauded for making a feature in a niche genre, and a ghost story no less, that delivers such astounding visceral thrills. It's captivating, wholly absorbing, and is without question one of the best horror films I've ever watched: as far as I'm concerned, 'Gonjiam: Haunted asylum' is a must-see.

Very dark, realistic and absolutely horrifing!
Mivas_Greece1 November 2021
Metaphysical horror movie from Korea. Korean cinema is famous for its mystery / horror movies and this is no exception. Filmed with animated cameras in a documentary style, and with a very dark style like REC, it gives a realism to the viewer. So a group of young people, youtubers, go live broadcasting to explore the legendary, haunted psychiatric asylum in Gon-ji-am. A rather dark and scary movie, as the team goes overnight to the remote and abandoned asylum to explore it, and its age-old interior, cold rooms and dark spaces create a very scary atmosphere to the viewer. Contributing to this is the horror on the actors' faces and the use of a moving camera that makes them all more realistic. The effects and the intensity that prevails intensify the terror even more. On the downside, the film unfortunately took too long to get into its main part and when the first indications started, as they admitted, they were fake to have views on Youtube... The film could have been 30 minutes shorter and have a small introduction so that it can enter the main part immediately without becoming boring to the viewer. Unfortunately about the first half of the movie is extremely boring, it is not worth more than 5/10, while the second half and especially the last part is worth 7/10 and is quite strong. Overall it is generally recommended, but they could remove most of the introduction which was boring.

Second half has a few chilling moments, but still kind of a waste of time
jungophile14 September 2020
The challenge of making a film like this is that any average horror film fan pretty much knows what to expect going in, so the quality of the viewing experience depends a lot on the execution of a well-worn plot line and the professionalism of the ensemble cast. On the plus side, we have a suitably creepy and foreboding atmosphere of a long-defunct mental institution after midnight, and the actors sell the scares pretty well, too. On the negative side, the viewer has to be very patient before the inevitable ghost shenanigans get rolling.

Call me impatient, but I was frustrated by the long set up and character development. Frankly, I couldn't wait for these annoying 20-somethings to get their comeuppance, so consequently, I was rooting for the ghosts by the half way point. Since my sympathy for the characters was practically nil when the horror elements were finally unveiled, I actually chuckled when the "scariest" moments finally made their entrance.

I think the film would have been much more powerful if it was a bit more tightly edited; even just lopping off ten minutes from the first act would have been an improvement. Still, for a low budget Asian horror film, not bad.

Amazing Horror Film!
revolutionatic22 April 2018
I walked into this one expecting another generically entertaining horror film. Boy, was I wrong! If you are looking to be spooked out of your minds, this one definitely takes the cake!

The movie is about a bunch of young adults who sneak into an abandoned haunted asylum to try and open a deeply haunted room known as Room 402. They do this in order to get a lot of views for their live-stream of proving paranormal activity in the asylum and make a lot of money in the process through ad revenue (typical millennial ambitions). The story wasn't bad, but it was predictable. However, story is not the selling point of horror films in my opinion.

The creep factor was stellar, the direction made near perfect use of the recording/live-stream gimmick, and the sense of dread and mystery kept the audience hooked when things started getting interesting. Furthermore, the jump scares were done in moderation and I was not fed up with it by the end of the movie. That is definitely a plus!

The acting was great. The actors do a good job of portraying silly young adults looking for cheap thrills and excitement.

However, certain scenes were rather pointless or made no sense. The cliched joyful and fun-filled segment making 1/4 of the movie (a strange staple of a lot of Asian horror movies) was a bit too long, and served no purpose to the overall plot. There was also some form of teleportation in the movie which felt like lazy writing, and one scene near the end involving the background of a computer also felt forced and cheap. Furthermore, the direction tried to keep the realism of live-stream gimmick of the movie, so there were parts where the scenes hanged and lagged (to add to the immersion and realism). I found this annoying but this seems to be a matter of taste as I am sure others would appreciate this cinematic touch.

Be that as it may, do not let these minor flaws put you off this amazing horror film. I highly recommend lovers of horror to give this a try! As an avid horror film hobbyist, I was pleasantly surprised at the quality of this movie. Definitely check this out!

at what point have we gone too far (67%)
rohhyunj27 October 2022
Warning: Spoilers
The best of found footage work when there is just enough plot fleshed out to pull us in the scares, but also to keep us asking and guessing. Gonjiam: Haunted Asylum (2018) works well regarding suspense and uncertainty, but fails to fully engage with the plot. Nevertheless, the bleak set design blends perfectly with the energy of the cast to create a found footage film that works to a reasonable extent.

We are introduced to the Gonjiam Psychiatric Hospital via Wi Ha-joon (Wi Ha-Joon), who briefs us on their mission to explore the abandoned hospital. The first thing I should point out is that the hospital is real (thus the Korean audience will know beforehand), and the actors use their real names (except for Charlotte). There's certainly a sense of realism throughout the film, fleshing out the characters with each event.

Character work is done reasonably well throughout the film, even with a one-and-a-half hour runtime. There are seven distinct characters, including a bright and thrill-seeking Charlotte, a quiet but always-first Ah-yeon, the scheming Je-yoon and Sung-hoon, and a reluctant Seung-wook.

The film follows expected plot lines, to a resolution where one may ask, "Is this it?" Honestly, it was disappointing; it seemed too anticlimactic, too unoriginal just to end like this. The film follows a rather simple introduction, but there is still due credit as it picks up its pace from there.

The delivery of the dilemmas are done quite well, probably saving the plot. The suspenseful this-was-fake-but-that-was-not plot line worked well in asking: at what point have we gone too far? When the scheming duo start to notice that things are going very, very wrong, they face a choice- do they give up their views and think about the safety of the team? Nah. They want a bigger share. Yeah, there's definitely something going wrong there.

There's also quite a clear dilemma for Ha-joon, the captain. On one screen, he sees the views of his channel, Horror Times. On the other, he sees inexplicable details and a traumatised team. What does he do? As a character whose sole interest is to garner up views and ad revenue, he continues. But we later see that the views were all fake- the views really only peaked at around 500 after Sung-hoon reveals the staging, and the ghost on the website sits up and leaves. Maybe it was the paranormal controlling the number of views the whole time (gas stove turning on, blackouts)?

Some of the visual highlights that made the film so much better. Not only did the set design tune in to the mood, it gave us an viscerally bleak, foreboding tone that the plot fed off well. The pasta-slurping ghost was also quite nice, sending Charlotte to one of the scariest parts of the film. The overwhelming sense of fear and defeat in Room 402 was suffocating as a successful climax. The third act, compared to the first and second, was especially well orchestrated and left me feeling suffocated.

However, the film is more like a ping-pong ball, hurtling at you with effect, and a few nice scares, but bouncing away from you with the same abruptness, leaving only a faint echo.

Nothing new
Misss2510 July 2022
Warning: Spoilers
There were some YouTubers/ horror series crews decided to do a live on a haunted asylum. They already planted some scary things into the asylum to get more viewers and ads in order to make some extra money. But, things didn't go according to plan as the place is actually haunted. All the crew members died.

When we started the movie, we already know this gonna happen. I donno know why people are rating this so high.

Camera Angles Got Me Feeling Like I'm There! Not my favorite horror movie but still very good
koksalanmert21 April 2022
I've always liked watching real life horror stuff and also fictioned videos/movies with realistic camera angles. This movie gave me one of the best experiences with the real life feeling. It was like someone really recorded this and shared. The acting was not the best but it was enough to keep me in the movie and the feeling of it. I watched this movie 2 years ago but what made me comeback and review it was a game that I came across on Steam named "Deadly Broadcast". I believe the company was inspired by this movie. To conclude, I really like this movie because of the realistic camera work and the acting. I cannot say it's a must watch but if you are interested in the genre you should give it a chance!
