The First Turkish Vampire Series!
ahmetkozan8 September 2018
Warning: Spoilers
It's easy to make a series, but it's hard to reveal a nice series. Fantastic stories can be nice if handled well but this is as difficult as making a nice series. Especially more difficult to do in Turkey. When I first heard the news about this series, I thought that there would be artificial dialogues and lousy acting. But when I watched the trailer, my expectations were too high. It was a good trailer from what I expected. I watched all the episodes when the series came out. As of the first episode, I liked the dark atmosphere created in the series. We saw Istanbul in a way we had never seen before. When I saw the first episode, I said "yes", this time it happened. But unfortunately the series moved on very badly after the second episode.

It is good that the story dates back to the Ottoman period, but it is bad that it is based on revenge. A girl turned into a vampire comes to Istanbul for revenge years later. I don't like this script. It's not an attractive scenario for me. I can't say that the series is good except for a few elements. I liked the environment created in the series. In accordance with a story that passes today, but goes beyond time; it is colored with sharp and bright lights and has a misty and mysterious atmosphere. In almost every scene, the use of hot and cold colors is enriched with a lot of visuals. Before I started watching the series I was nervous about the success of the visual effects, but they were quite well practiced. The technical flaws of the directory seemed to be mostly in the editing. In the transitions of the scenes, there were disjointed and confused places in the connections of events. The other thing that bothered me is the characteristics of vampires. Our native vampires are a little different from the vampires we know. The vampires have never used the speed characteristics, or that's not this the speed I understand. Unfortunately, the action scenes was very few. Vampires had a fighting scene, and I don't even want to mention it. You're expecting a big battle between vampires and hunters until you get to the last episode of the series. But there's not even one battle in the series. The final episode has been very big disappointment. Yeah well, I said now will be war. But it's not. All the vampires gave up and ran away. It's really ridiculous. I didn't think it would be so bad.

I want to mention about the cast of the series. Although the dialogues are very artificial the acting was above average. Especially Birkan Sokullu was good. I think he fits the vampire role. I couldn't love Kerem Bursin. He seemed very American. He was grinning among other actors. Mia, played by Elçin Sangu, is quite cold and distant character. Apart from the main cast, there is a feeling of artificiality for all the side characters that make up both vampires and hunters. In general, I did not like the cast of the series. Vampires are not convincing. They were making strange noises I've never seen before. The hunters have not been able to catch a tremendously exaggerated and convincing tone. Also, I can say that the sex scene of Kerem Bürsin and Nilperi Sahinkaya, who is a mockery in social media, is quite surreal. Although the series initially excites us as ideas, it is a sloppy production due to the weakness of the performances and the scenario. 5/10

Too many loose ends
duelce11 May 2019
Warning: Spoilers
This series ended with way too many loose ends. Also, Karmen's role was so blatantly obvious from the beginning that I thought it was too obvious. Disappointing. And, c'mon! dmitry was a great complex conflicted character, you kill him off???? I hope if there is a Season 2, they explain why he would go to Mia and allow her to kill him. It really makes no sense. Also, didn't the other vampire who is a protector to everyone but Karmen, *eyeroll, kill himself with the knife that makes him immortal? So why did he die? Anyway, to sit through a whole series and get an ending that doesn't add up is super disappointing.

Boring
andymhancock20 March 2019
I found it boring. I watched up to 3rd or 4th episode and bailed. The big baddie was too juvenile and cocky to make a credible bad guy. Some redeeming qualities include the well played character who was enamoured of vampires. I got a bit tired of the punk trope for the good guys, but I get that it's part of the down trodden neighbourhood. I did not find i worthwhile because the series was taking too much time not only moving the understandable parts of the story along, but also filling in the back story with explanation rather than filler.

Interesting story
jljemd-392726 April 2019
I think this is the first Vampire story I have seen (not that I have seen them all) that had humans who wished to become vampires and also pushed back against the violence of humans vs the violence of vampires. I liked that part, and I also enjoy foreign languages when I can take time to watch the subtitles. The acting, however, left a lot to be desired. Almost everyone was too young, and Kerem Bürsin did not do a good job of acting in this. He was mostly just posturing the entire time trying to be cool. I looked him up finally, and it looks like he fell back on his modeling chops and "vogued" it up here. I'm not sure whether to fault the director or the actors, as I don't recall seeing any of them elsewhere. I stuck it out because I really enjoyed the Turkish Super Hero in The Protector also on Netflix, which was head and shoulders above this one as far as being watchable.

Elcin and Kerem excellent Turkish actors
alpadilla-2883615 December 2021
My rating is aimed at the flawless performance of Elcin Sangu and Kerem Bursin ... the chemistry between these two vampires ... and their bond of love.

For this being Turkish, it's pretty sold. Wish there was more than just one season.

Americanised and unoriginal!
zabadnearwa8 September 2018
This could have been something really cool and new, however it seems like the creators were so focused on it looking like a hollywood production that it loses any originality and creativity. Yes, the story is set in Istanbul however I couldn't help but feel it was in Newyork or Seattle, it's like they completely ignored the Turkish culture! Why would I watch this series when I can watch another American series, at least then it would be somewhat original. Finally, I certainly did not like how it objectified women and how inappropriate and insensitive some parts were.

Enjoyable

I enjoyed it so much and Dimitry was a very good character. All and all, I loved the series and enjoy it. I watched all the episode in raw and I saw a lot of good cinematography here and the actors did amazing work.

Still watching and still interested...
krice2313 January 2020
It's way premature for me to write any accurate or thorough review of this series, as I've only just now finished episode 4 of 8, but I wanted to put a word in about the cast as well as the dubbing. The cast appears to do an excellent job, overall. There are a few misses, even a major one such as the leader of the Istanbul vampires, Dimitri, who is far too over-the-top and self-absorbed for my taste, but by-and-large this cast shines through convincingly. The movie is filmed in their native Turkish language (forgive my ignorance; I have not researched what this language or dialect would be called), and subtitled. Additionally, someone decided to take the time and invest in the expense to have the entire scripts dialogue dubbed in English.

nothing but a freak show
alyeynaerkisi6 September 2018
It looks like a parody. I opened it with high hopes but now it looks so bad. Every 4 word of 3 is cursing .I watched 30 minutes of it , I can say that the producer watched to many turkish dubbed movies. Cast is good but story telling is 0/10. Seriously funny show.

From good to: ¿Wait, is this the end?
Racnad20 April 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Interesting concept, but, the show goes from well/ok, to an absolute disaster, the fight scenes look incredibly bad and fake, like a kindergarten choreography, the story turns very boring, sometimes has no sense, kinda entertaining, but the only thing that really annoyed me, was the two final episodes, lack of action, lack of good writing, everyone were just looking to each other doing nothing, and at the very end, there was no fights, no "ritual", no action, no nothing, just a dark screen and by magic everything was fine. This show had potential, but now I feel like I just wasted my time.

If you get through the first few episodes it's worth it
cjhavercroft23 March 2019
Warning: Spoilers
In the beginning due to the English dub that didn't quite match the subtitles I found events hard to follow. But after the 2nd episode I was hooked. I really enjoyed this Turkish take on the vampire myth. What I will say is if events from the finale dont somehow alter dramatically I dont know if I'll watch series two beyond seeing if miraculously D resurfaces.

Nice visuals, proper cast does not conceal lack of story.
onursenturk10 March 2019
I recommend you to give it try with open mind and watch this. Also set a timer, how long your suspension of disbelief will last.

Where to start? Anyway, here is long list.

Editing: It is the worst. Pacing is all over the place. It requires patience to sit through an episode. Not to mention finishing entire season. You have to get a medal for watching the entire season.

Story: There is nothing new about it or any new places to go with it. Dialogues are often non-existent, it is more like pointless monologues. Also lots of slang language. It really puts you off. Also profanity does not look cool or appropriate.

Acting: It is related with script, there is not great lines to play. Some of these actors A list actors working in local market. Even A list talent can't save it.

World Building: Lazy. Visual language is like out 90s Vampire movies. It wants to be Blade, Underworld and many more. Unfortunately cant. There is also Engineer head in the night club. I guess it is somewhat related with Alien franchise as well.

Mystery/Horror: There is a lot Vampire content out there good, mediocre and bad. For some reason this fails to capture the essential of the night creatures. It is a miracle how it is possible to do it. Even tv series like Vampire Diaries and teen drama franchises like Twilight movies exist and even though some don't like it, they have something to say. This series has nothing to say. It does not treat creatures right, it does not treat humans right. So, why bother doing it?

Visuals: DOP did great job in some areas. It is the reason why some mistakes really puts people off. There was camera pan shot, which had tremendous amount of jitter. It is easy to solve by shortening the scene in edit. Or not use it at all. Nobody cared and they kept this shot in.

Action: There is little action and very rare.

Sound Design/Mixing: It is very bad and dialogues are not clear. Often comes out as muddled.

How to salvage?

If editor was brave enough to cut %80 percent of lack luster scenes. This can be a tolerable feature to watch. Also additional ADR needs to be done for dialogue.

There is one proof of concept music video done early. Reason why it works is; it is short. It does not drag. But this drags and drags so much and there is nothing worthwhile to watch.

Purpose of this review is to point out for shortcomings of title. Almost all audience or everyone wants watch a good film or tv show when they sit through. Nobody wants to slam or give bad word of mouth to your title. The reason there is bad reviews here is because there is lack of respect to audience and this series shows no respect to your intellect.

Can someone figure out how or why Netflix got to rights?

Gritty and new

I've not seen this type of movie done in this part of the world and for some reason the flavour and style let alone the atmosphere was spot on. I loved this and I hope many more are made.

It could be better
roche-9967621 December 2023
I love Kerem Bürsin and he played a very appealing vampire. It's the first non drama Turkish series I've watched and I believe that it has a lot of potential. It was a bit boring and the ending was bad. The show is called Immortals but in the end the immortals are killed, it doesn't make sense. I would love to see Mia (Elçin Sangu) bring Dmitry back to life. More CGI, I mean it is a show about vampires. Honestly I only finished watching the show because of Kerem. His Alpha Male character was on point but I don't get the storyline. Even though the chemistry was there, there was very little action.

Looks like a very bad adaptation of American series. Vampires in Istanbul?! It doesn't even makes sense...Casting is good but the scenario and the visuals are definitely not believable. Show doesn't blend with the Turkish culture.

Solid story, could have been fleshed out a little better
snugglebucks5 March 2023
I loved this show. I loved the characters, the story, all of it. I just wish it had been a little longer than 8 episodes so it. Could have been fleshed out better. The twist at the end really wraps it up, but at the same time there could have easily been a second season and I wish there was.

If it had been longer, if the main character's backstory and motives had been gone into a little more it would have been better. I also didn't really get the whole romance between Mia and Dmitry, I don't feel like that was done in a natural, organic way, rather it was just written and it simply happened. I'm not mad at it, but given Mia's motives, it didn't make sense with the lack of explanation for it.

All in all, the shortcomings in my opinion are small, had it been fleshed out a little more this would have gotten an easy 10 stars from me.

Seediness, darkness, and vampire vixens.
eric_jv1 November 2019
If you like The Protector or want a similar tone of a fierce group traversing through Istanbul on a quest for something...check it out!

It starts off slow, picks up a little bit then leaves you wanting to know so much more that it doesn't deliver! Huge disappointment but an enjoyable journey. Sure, the women are probably unrealistically beautiful but they add to the sexiness of a modern interpretation of vampires that you find these days, no big deal. Pure, sexy, evil ones just out to get the job done, no extra sparkles or heavy romance.

One particular feature you'll notice is that the show almost entirely showcases Istanbul at night...the grungy, trashy underworld of alleys, thugs and no tourist sights. However Americanized or inauthentic it seems to be, it's a depiction that really shines through the darkness, so to speak, and fuels the vengeful vibe of the plot.

I'm always drawn to a stylized story, flaws and all, with hotties on a hunt. Check it out if you want the usual bloodiness and a cultural twist on a vampire tale. Plus, if you speak or study any Turkish, you'll learn plenty of bad words and vulgarities, so just enjoy it!
