Starts okay, goes downhill towards the end.
deloudelouvain30 April 2020
Yesterday I watched a movie that was interesting at first and that improved a lot towards the ending, and no it wasn't Texas Cotton. Texas Cotton is the exact opposite, it starts interesting as well but it gets much worse towards the end. The 'mystery' was already a bit obvious but it was still watchable, too bad the last twenty minutes went downhill and made it clear that the script was the weakest link. The acting was okay for some, mediocre from others. In short I liked this movie in the beginning but the last half hour made me change my mind completely.

Barely Passes Yet Passes, Just Slightly
TheFearmakers21 November 2018
A kind of CHINATOWN on sleeping pills, and taking place in the Lone Star State, TEXAS COTTON is actually a pop culture party trick of a Modern-Western Thriller, being it stars the star of what's considered the best-worst movie ever made: That being George Hardy of infamous TROLL 2 niche fame, who in real life is a smiling, upbeat, jovial personality... and a dentist at that...

So for the ultra-serious role of a veteran cop seeking clues in a small town in which he's a dedicated and stubbornly honest sheriff, Hardy is played safe, for the most part, with a one-note, dissatisfied expression of someone who not only tasted someone else's bitter coffee, but has grown contemptuously accustomed to it...

With a tattered cowboy's weary bow legs harboring a squat build; a lantern jaw and a shocked-white, wavy head of hair, he looks pretty good, but doesn't move around all that naturally on screen... His lack of acting skills really shows not while speaking but listening to others, as if waiting for his turn...

Then again, when he does talk it's just-true-enough to make his character seem genuinely concerned within the usual Neo Noir template of going from location to location: to unearth hidden truths that are mostly covered in nefarious, sometimes dangerous lies. The latter providing the film's biggest problem...

The flamboyant, horribly overboard villain leaves little to the imagination: a mayor so crooked he can hardly stand upright. And despite the feeling the director's in the process of learning how, there's a cerebral flow that works: A kind of mellow, page-turning cadence...

And the very last shot, which intentionally bookends the melancholy cold open, is beautiful and effective, and almost makes one wish that the middle-ground had more of a point than a process.

Nothing to See Here
joseph-masalsky28 May 2020
I'm usually a fan of neo westerns and I was further drawn to watching this because I was curious to see George Hardy in a straight dramatic role. Although I think Hardy did alright with what he was given ultimately there is very little worth watching here. I won't give any spoilers, and you won't need them because you will most likely figure out the "mystery" here pretty much from the first scene. With no intrigue left you will find yourself simply marveling at the poor writing, improbably scenarios, mostly bad acting and strange explosions. I did learn that apparently in Texas anyone can just walk into a courtroom after the defense rests and just start calling witnesses. Juliette Danielle from the Room is in here ever so briefly but there really is no reason to watch this one. Very disappointing.

Texas Cotton...strange fruit....Very odd indeed

I had only got 49 minutes in to this movie and I had to stop and find out more about it. I discovered it on YouTube completely by accident under a really general list of 'free Action movies 2017'. I've probably transgressed some copywrite issues along with whoever put it up on their YouTube Chanel, somehow I don't think anyone is going to be losing out massively. I've got to say that I haven't even seen the whole thing, but I've had to put it on hold so that I can ascertain that I'm not losing my mind and it's not one of the funniest films that I have seen in years. For a start, it's billed as an action movie, which considering the overall tempo thus-far, brought about my first set of the giggles. I have to say that I can't fairly conclude my review at this stage, but at this juncture, I do SERIOUSLY want to ask: are they taking the mick? It reminds me very much of David Lynch. I'm not an expert of film genres or critique, but I do recognise the term 'noir' and literally translate it as 'dark'. I believe one of the reviews I have read here describes it as such. Were they taking the Micky too? I have really lost all sense of objectivity and I have to say that I think, whether it was meant to be, or not, that it is, beyond all doubt, one of the funniest films that I have seen in years. I will add to this review when I've watched the whole movie and manage to stop laughing.

not very good

The story is nothing new. The camera work was great. I can't judge the acting because the script was terribly bad and full of cliches.

A tale of big fish vs little fish told in a neo noir fashion with a twist.

Horrible

Warning: Spoilers
Likely one of the worst movies ever made! Poor acting and an even worse script. The attention to detail is almost nonexistent. A Federal judge "called" in to hear a state misdemeanor case the same week as the crime - REALLY?!?! Just one example of many.

Many character actors in the best roles of their lives.
amazeu23 November 2018
This film starts out as Andy of Mayberry but the plot thickens into a British formula mystery. George Hardy is a very believable Texas lawman. Jason Douglas is a full of himself small town mayor. Jud Lorman is a prosecutor and when the prosecutor and the mayor are in court together you can't help but reminisce of those to actors in their scene in Jack Reacher. But in this film they both have significant parts and it is easy to see what great actors they are. Gene Jones also gets to show his stuff much more so than he did in No Country for Old Men.

The plot of this movie requires you to really concentrate for it to make sense. If you put forth the effort it is a great mystery, if you don't you won't get it.

The cinematography is great and the sound track is true Texas. Mike and the Moon Pies "You can't fun out on me" is a real red dirt sensation, too bad it didn't get mor play

So bad, I couldn't believe what I was watching, like a school video project, but worse!
niall-7385325 January 2023
This is definitely the worst film I have ever seen.

It's so bad (hilariously poor acting, most of it) the poor storyline the lot, I couldn't stop watching it for laughing at the over acting.

I mean the storyline is weak at best.

We're it produced by kids with their school video, it would still be poor, but understandable

Lots of county and western music playing over the radios, so if you like that sort of thing, there may be something in it for you.

However, to be fair, there is a twist in the tail, I'm glad I stuck at it, really to be sure that it didn't suddenly become decent, it didn't ... it really is soooooo bad, it's a joke.

Great Texas Crime Movie
flickconn11 April 2019
I love the Texas crime sub-genre and this is a great entry! I also love Troll 2 starring George Hardy and it was really cool to see him in a serious role here. It was confusing at first because I've only ever seen him in what's now famously the "Best Worst Movie" ever made but he works out well in this, even alongside legends like Lew Temple and Gene Jones.

A very solid suspense/thriller with a heck of a twist. The sheriff carried the movie very well. I like how they mixed a little humor with it. A good watch

Professional Entertainment!
chrisnlcc12 October 2019
Didn't know what to expect without A-listers and an independent film. Had me riveted! Well written story, good guys and gals were good, bad ones were bad, and the surprise at the end, make it a great movie as the definition goes. Had the right amount of suspense, action that surprised when it wasn't expected. There were mentions in the dialogue that it was a town of simple people that were "stupid", but the writer and director gave the town's characters the benefit of the doubt. The scene in the records warehouse was a nice addition (being so massive, like a "Goliath"), no "time killers" (needless scenes of cars driving just to add or fill spaces). A great overall package of what movie-making is, a gem in the rough; deserves more coverage! No over f-bombed language, no nudity, a film about justice, support of the image of the "Texas Lawman", a dogged investigator, simple, but nonetheless sneaky bad guys. 9 stars because, well, Star Wars it isn't, but in an industry full of overused bad language and other unnecessary filth that really isn't needed to make films seem "real", I was left with "wow! That was a great movie" when it was over! Nice job folks!...
