I grew up in the military.

My dad was in the SADF. He did his bit on the border.

He is a person of colour. He always told me that on the border, race wasn't an issue...the enemy was...

The SADF vs Swapo, Cuba, Russia and Angolans.

He once told me how he trekked over a day old battlefield to support the troops at the front.

On convoy, they encountered burned out Russian and Cuban tanks all facing Namibia. Later, the burned out tanks were facing each other and later still, they were all facing north... The SADF just ploughed through them all.

He told me about how quickly flesh on corpses were stripped by maggots, the insane amount of flies and the massive amount of spent bullet shells and helmets he collected.

He told me about the Recces, the mentally challenged guy assigned to "paddle" the bicycle fitted to the power generator and how badly the number 4 Rack Pack was.

War is terrible. It's horrible what man can do to each other. I wish it upon no man.

But I am grateful for what he and the others did - what they stood for and the honour they carried doing it. The war affected him badly - PTSD is very very real.

Viewing this all made me see it as he described it all.

Great cinema, visuals, story-telling, everything.

MAN, South Africa could box, hey?
