No one’s ever really gone when it comes to a timey wimey show like Doctor Who, including past showrunner Steven Moffat, who is back penning a new episode of series 14. We still know very little about his new story except that it’ll be the third episode of the series, will feature Hitchcock-style suspense, and is the second episode directed by Julie Anne Robinson after the series 14 premiere.
And now add a new detail: the episode’s title, which is simply “Boom.” Sounds explosive, indeed.

Sit down for this one: in shock news that stunned the nation, caused a window cleaner to fall off his ladder, and sent flocks of pigeons flying out of church towers, a Doctor Who writer is confirmed to have written an episode of Doctor Who.
Despite denying it at every turn for months, Steven Moffat has finally confirmed his much-rumoured return to Doctor Who. The former showrunner in the Eleventh and Twelfth Doctor eras, whose previous episode was 2017’s “Twice Upon a Time” has indeed written an episode of the soon-to-air series 14.
While the title of Moffat’s new episode is still under wraps, it’s very likely to be episode three, aka The Episode Long-Rumoured to Have Been Written by Steven Moffat. If so, we can expect to see it on BBC iPlayer just after midnight on May 18 in the UK (7pm E.T May 17 in the US and...

Well, it was supposed to have been a surprise. Fifteenth Doctor Ncuti Gatwa let the cat somewhat out of the bag at the GQ Men of the Year awards on November 16, when he announced to The Mirror “I shouldn’t say this but I shot a scene, somehow, with the first ever Doctor, William Hartnell.”
Doctor Who fans put two and two together, correctly guessing that Gatwa didn’t mean the actual William Hartnell, who passed away in 1975, but the version of him played by actor David Bradley – first in 2013 docudrama An Adventure in Space and Time about the creation of Doctor Who, and subsequently in “The Doctor Falls”, “Twice Upon a Time” and “The Power of the Doctor”.
Knowing that An Adventure in Space and Time had yet to appear as part of BBC iPlayer’s extensive Whoniverse, and was scheduled for a BBC Four repeat on the night of the 60th anniversary,...

Those big teases at the BBC have spent months drip-feeding us tiny morsels of juicy Doctor Who news, from confirming series 14 guest stars one by one to (finally!) giving us the 60th anniversary special air dates (and even deleting a reference to a “spring 2024” series 14 release date), so it was quite a shock to see that Disney seems to have casually leaked the Doctor Who Christmas special episode title and air date in a random social media post today.
All we really knew so far was it was to be Ncuti Gatwa’s first full episode as the Fifteenth Doctor, would feature the debut of his new companion Ruby Sunday (Coronation Street’s Millie Gibson) and that it was airing “over the festive period in 2023”.
So what crucial details did Disney let slip?

In its continuing mission to help older Doctor Who fans relive their childhoods, and make even older Doctor Who fans say “Wait a second, that was your childhood? But you’re 30!” it has been announced that the next Doctor Who we see will not only be written by Russell T Davies, the showrunner of this version of Who’s first four seasons (plus specials), it will not only star classic, fan favourite Doctor David Tennant, and classic, fan favourite companion Donna Noble (Catherine Tate), it will also be scored by classic, fan favourite composer Murray Gold.
If you don’t recognise the name, you will still know his work if you’ve watched any of the increasingly-inaccurately-named “new” series Who prior to Jodie Whittaker’s incarnation. He is, in many ways, as responsible for the feel and identity of the show as Russell T Davies or his successor, Steven Moffat.

Even before stepping into the legendary shoes of DC Comics adventurer Lady Johanna Constantine, Jenna Coleman was already a pop culture icon. After all, Coleman brought to life one of the most beloved characters in Doctor Who history, the Eleventh and Twelfth Doctors’ trusty companion Clara Oswald. Coleman’s run as a companion is one of the longest ever, debuting in 2012’s “Asylum of the Daleks” and making her final appearance in 2017’s “Twice Upon a Time” (although she made her official exit from the Tardis in 2015’s “Hell Bent”).
Since escaping Gallifrey, Coleman’s taken on a few other big roles, including that of Queen Victoria herself in three series of the British historical drama Victoria, and her upcoming work on Netflix’s The Sandman represents her biggest challenge yet. Moon Knight Review: Disney+’s Most Original Marvel Series Is Also the Most Visually Exciting One Yet
Sometimes a lack of expectations can be a good thing.
Disney+’s Moon Knight is the streamer’s first live-action Marvel series to not spin off a character and actor already established by the blockbuster MCUfranchise. In addition to that, Moon Knight in his own right is not quite “obscure,” but certainly less well known than the Marvel characters who thus far have merited their own Disney+ showcase.

A new chapter of the Marvel Cinematic Universe is beginning with the arrival of Moon Knight, a show (and indeed a superhero) unlike any other. The series is the first Marvel project to arrive on the small screen since the Jeremy Renner-starring Hawkeye bowed last December, and it certainly looks like it will be one to watch for MCU fans and newbies alike.
Moon Knight is only the first of many new Phase 4 releases planned for 2022. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness will hit theaters in May, Ms. Marvel will debut on Disney+ in June, Thor: Love and Thunder is heading for a July opening, and we should also see the likes of She-Hulk and What If…? Season 2 emerge later in the year. Marvel’s Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, which has experienced production issues, may yet be pushed back to 2023.

Less than a fortnight ahead of its premiere, runtimes for the first four episodes of Marvel’s Moon Knight have made their way onto social media.
Julia Delbel of The Direct shared details of the Moon Knight episodes over on Twitter. According to Delbel, the first episode is 45 minutes long, episode 2 is 50 minutes long, episode 3 is also 50 minutes, and episode 4 is 51 minutes. All the running times listed include the end credits sequence, which is apparently 5 minutes long. This would mean the first episode is the shortest of the stack at around 40 minutes in length.

John Korty, an Oscar- and Emmy-winning director and documentarian known for his films “Who Are the DeBolts?” and “Where Did They Get Nineteen Kids?” and “The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman,” has died. He was 85.
Korty’s death was first reported by the Marin Independent Journal, which said that he died in his home in Marin County, California, on March 9.
A filmmaker who straddled the line between independent films and mainstream narrative work, Korty started his career in animation in the early 1950s. While still in school in Antioch, Ohio, he experimented with new techniques for animation that he would use in television spots. In 1964, he even developed an animated documentary short film called “Breaking the Habit” that was sponsored by the American Cancer Society about the dangers of smoking, and the spot went on to receive an Oscar nomination.

John Korty, who directed the Emmy-winning The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman and the Oscar-winning documentary Who Are the DeBolts? and Where Did They Get Nineteen Kids?, died March 9 at his home in Marin County, CA. He was 85.
His death was first reported in the Marin Independent Journal.
One of the premiere directors during the made-for-tv movie heyday that began in the early 1970s, Korty helmed the sci-fi chiller The People (1972), the anti-drug drama Go Ask Alice (1973) and, in 1980, the holiday tale A Christmas Without Snow.
His greatest television achievement came in 1974, when he directed Cicely Tyson in the celebrated CBS movie The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman. Based on the 1971 novel by Ernest J. Gaines, the film told the story of a Black woman who, in 1962 at the age of 110, narrates her life story that began in slavery in the American South. Although works of fiction, both the novel...

David Fincher and Ren Klyce came of age during a seminal time for Hollywood: when the pair were just kids, a group of ’70s filmmakers was reshaping what it meant to make movies, right from the pair’s native Bay Area. In a biographical detail almost too perfect to be true, George Lucas rented a house in Marin County to edit his “Thx 1138,” that just so happened to be located right next door to the Klyce family’s home. A single suburban lawn is all that separated a then-9-year-old Ren from the great Walter Murch, just as he was starting to change modern movie sound forever, work he’d continue throughout the decade with another NorCal auteur, Francis Ford Coppola. And it would be on a Lucas-produced animated feature, “Twice Upon a Time,” that future sound designer Klyce would meet his Coppola, a then-19-year-old Fincher.

To be able to examine its quality in any meaningful way means diving into the details – in particular, decisions certain characters make and how well the episode delivers on its premise, all of which we’ll obviously be saving for the full-fat review next year. Instead, consider this as very much a taster – a broader appraisal of the tone of the episode, how seriously you should be planning your New Year’s Day around watching it, and obviously which nibbles are best to accompany your viewing – a...

Jodie Whittaker is currently leading Doctor Who as the thirteenth incarnation of the titular character, but will we ever get to see the old Doctors come together in their roles during Chibnall’s tenure, as is the tradition in the continuity of the series?
Different Doctors coming together isn’t exactly a surprising or unprecedented phenomenon for the sci-fi show. In the past couple of years alone, we’ve seen Tenth and Eleventh unite in the 50th Anniversary special episode “The Day of the Doctor,” not to mention that Capaldi’s Twelfth and David Bradley’s First ran into each other in Steven Moffat’s last episode, “Twice Upon a Time.” But Jodie’s Thirteenth has yet to encounter any of her former selves, that is, barring Jo Martin’s secret Doctor that was essentially a result of the Timeless Child twist at the end of season 12.

As part of the writing staff since 2005, former Doctor Who showrunner Steven Moffat wrote for all of the modern Doctors up to Peter Capaldi, as well as a bunch of the others he brought back from time to time. He handed over the reins of the show to successor Chris Chibnall back in 2017, who then cast Jodie Whittaker as the Thirteenth Doctor, but now, Moffat is able to add Whittaker to the list of Doctors he’s covered, as a new short story from the writer has been shared online.

Series 13 may be a long way off yet (an educated guess would place its arrival in late 2021), but Doctor Who will return sooner than that. As teased at the very end of the series 12 finale, “The Timeless Children,” the next episode will be a one-off special due to air this Christmas or New Year 2021.
Entitled “Revolution of the Daleks,” the extended episode will see the Doctor once again go up against the mutant abominations. The twelfth incarnation of the Doctor was stern and fearless, bearing the marks of a two-thousand-year-old Time Lord in a more transparent manner. Now, a new video posted on Doctor Who‘s official YouTube channel compiles Capaldi’s best moments as the Twelfth Doctor.
To many, he was known as the Hybrid. To some, he was known as the President. But to us, he will always be the Magician. When Steven Moffat, the series’ previous executive producer, chose Peter Capaldi to play the Doctor, he intended to show a darker aspect of the character and move away from the quirkiness of the Tenth and Eleventh Doctors, played by David Tennant and Matt Smith, respectively. Doctor Who‘s Peter Capaldi and Mark Gatiss were both last seen on the show back in 2017’s Christmas special “Twice Upon a Time,” but they’ll be teaming up again this yuletide for a chilling new ghost story.
Gatiss, who’s also the co-creator of Sherlock alongside former Doctor Who showrunner Steven Moffat, has penned Martin’s Close, a 30-minute adaptation of a classic tale from Victorian horror author M.R. James that’s set to arrive on the BBC this December. James’ story is presented as a record of the trial of John Martin, a man accused of killing his lover, who may just be haunted by her vengeful spirit.

One of the most famous villains in Doctor Who mythology is the Valeyard, who first appeared in the era of Colin Baker’s Sixth Doctor. Back then, the character was revealed to be a future, evil incarnation of the Doctor. Apparently, at some point after his twelfth regeneration, the Doctor would become evil and travel back in time to frame his past self for false crimes and steal his regenerations.
The Valeyard was also described as an amalgam of the Doctor’s darkness that finally succumbed to his worst instincts, and who now views the Time Lord he’d once been as the moral counterpart of his existence, who needs to be eliminated in order for the Valeyard to take control of the full set of powers and resources at the Doctor’s disposal.
When Steven Moffat took over the show in 2009 though, the Valeyard presented a problem, since the...

As the Berlin Festival looks to a future under new directors, one fairly safe prediction is that its TV strand, already boasting packed-to-the -rafters audiences for its key sessions, will only get bigger. Following, five takeaways from its 5th edition:

Amazon made the running at Sundance, but Netflix ruled business news flow in Berlin, at least through Wednesday afternoon. With its first film in Berlin competition, Isabel Coixet’s “Elisa & Marcela,” an at-least 49-exec delegation and its own panel at Berlin’s Drama Series Days, during the course of the Berlin Film Festival, Netflix unveiled 12 new Original Series and seven new Original Movies out of international, from Spain (five new series), Mexico, Germany and Norway (one series).

Anyone who casts an eye over the long-form dramas premiering at this year’s Berlin Intl. Film Festival can find many series that are ripe for picking by new territories — as well as plenty that have already been pounced on by in-the-know buyers.
Since it launched five years ago, the Berlinale Series program has become a launch pad for European scripted shows. Meanwhile, its Drama Series Days, with Market Screenings framing such series as “Harassment” (pictured) this year, has grown as a financing and acquisitions event at the European Film Market.
“In the current audiovisual landscape, drama series are an important part of our industry,” says Berlinale director Dieter Kosslick. “That’s why we wanted to include them not only at the Efm, but also in our public program.”
For their part, producers and distributors say they like launching series at a festival such as Berlin. It lends a certain...
