Legendary Entertainment has bought out Chinese multinational conglomerate Wanda Group’s remaining 60% equity interest in the studio known for the “Dune” and “Godzilla” franchises.
The transaction was funded entirely by Legendary using cash on its balance sheet. Legendary emphasized that it retains “significant excess liquidity” after the transaction to fund its current business and planned expansion. In 2023, the studio secured a five-year, $800 million credit facility led by J.P. Morgan.
“The purchase of Wanda’s remaining ownership interest is the next strategic step in Legendary’s long-range growth plan. With our outstanding creative team, headed by Mary Parent, developing, producing and marketing high-quality film and television and working with leading artists remains core to our expansion,” Legendary CEO Josh Grode said in a statement. “I want to thank and acknowledge Wanda, who has been an outstanding and supportive shareholder since 2016, and I congratulate them on this transaction.”

Legendary Entertainment has completed a buyout of Wanda Group’s remaining equity interest in a move CEO Josh Grode said ushers in a new era for the studio.
Financial terms weren’t disclosed but Legendary said it funded the transaction entirely from cash on its balance sheet for the deal led by Grode, without tapping partner Apollo Global. Legendary and Apollo now co-own the company and the board will be evenly split between management and the private equity giant that invested $760 million in Legendary in 2022.
Chinese conglomerate Wanda acquired the studio in 2016. “I think they were in a position where they needed some capital [and] the opportunity arose for us to buy Wanda’s interest at a valuation that would be very accretive to both management and Apollo. And so, as a result, we were able to get a transaction done,” Grode tells Deadline.

Netflix unveiled the first big data dump of 2024 on Thursday, and the engagement report for everything watched in the first half of the year proved that subscribers really love three things: Millie Bobby Brown, sharks and animated movies.
Some of the data points were unsurprising – we knew Brown’s “Damsel” was a huge hit, and indeed it was the most-watched film for the first half of the year. But others were interesting, like just how heavily Netflix’s streaming partnership with Universal factors into what’s being watched and the relative success of Zack Snyder’s “Rebel Moon” films.
Below, we thumb through the biggest winners on the film side of the data dump.

How do the makers of Bridgerton keep a fandom as dedicated as theirs guessing? How does the Netflix show surprise a core of fans who are so intimately familiar with Julia Quinn’s source books that they’re anticipating every blush and ball before it even gets to the screen?
One solution, as has happened in season three, is to play with the established order of things. Though Benedict Bridgerton’s romance follows on from that of his brother Anthony’s in Quinn’s book series, the TV show has (rightly!) vaulted over that to first show the love story between Colin Bridgerton and Penelope Featherington.
Their other answer? Invention. In addition to TV-only characters Madame Delacroix, Will and Alice Mondrich and Queen Charlotte herself, a new raft of invented-for-the-show characters appear in season three. Here they all are, along with info on the actors playing them, plus a couple...

More and more pop culture figures are slipping into the public domain, allowing anyone to reinterpret beloved characters. In 2022, Winnie-The-Pooh entered the public domain, and our cherished childhood friend was made into a vicious slasher villain at the center of a humorless bloodbath of a film, "Winnie-The-Pooh: Blood And Honey." Meanwhile, Disney has so far managed to successfully prevent Mickey Mouse from entering the public domain despite the copyright partially expiring, while Superman and other iconic superheroes move closer and closer to becoming public IP.
In the case of another prominent pop culture figure, Sherlock Holmes, many of the stories featuring Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's famous detective entered the public domain some time ago. Copyright typically lasts for the duration of an author's life plus 70 years, 120 years from the date of their creation, or 95 years from their publication date — whichever comes soonest. The general public isn't always the best at accepting the reality that child stars and teen idols eventually do grow up, struggling to see them as anything but their most memorable role during adolescence. But a trend has emerged in recent years, where the stars of massive teen franchises are getting the chance to grow. People have stopped making "Twilight" jokes about the Academy Award-nominated Kristen Stewart and "The Batman" star Robert Pattinson, while Zac Efron's turn in "The Iron Claw" had people campaigning on his behalf for an Oscar. Elsewhere, Jennifer Lawrence completed "The Hunger Games" and became the second-youngest person to ever win the Oscar for Best Actress, with all three main stars of the "Harry Potter" franchise having gone on to great success in other roles.

Henry Cavill is hanging up his Superman cape for good. On Dec. 14, 2022, the former Man of Steel shared a statement on Instagram announcing he's officially out of the DC Universe after meeting with studio chiefs James Gunn and Peter Safran. "I will, after all, not be returning as Superman," he wrote. "After being told by the studio to announce my return back in October, prior to [Gunn and Safran's] hire, this news isn't the easiest, but that's life. The changing of the guard is something that happens. I respect that."
Cavill concluded his statement with an uplifting message, writing, "For those who have been by my side through the years.....we can mourn a bit, but then we must remember.... Superman is still around." He went on, "Everything he stands for still exists, and the examples he set for us are still there! My turn to wear the cape has passed,...

It looks like the play’s the (stranger) thing!
London’s Phoenix Theatre is planning to turn things Upside Down when it debuts “Stranger Things: The First Shadow,” a prequel theatrical experience tied to the runaway Netflix hit. The fifth and final season of the series begins production this May, and the new play will be up “later this year.”
The author is Kate Trefry, a staff writer, story editor, and co-executive producer on the series, credited as writer on three teleplays, one from the second, third, and fourth seasons. The prequel play is based on a story from Trefry and “Stranger Things” creators Matt and Ross Duffer, as well as Jack Thorne. Thorne is the writer behind Netflix’s hit “Enola Holmes,” but, more relevant to this endeavor, he is the author of “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child,” the two-part theatrical experience/license to print money with productions in London,...

The characters of "Stranger Things" have been through a lot. For starters, there's that whole "one of my best friends disappeared into the woods one night and now no one knows where he is" thing that kicked everything off in season 1. From there, though, things have just kind of snowballed. It turns out that living in Hawkins, Indiana is as eventful as building your home in a guaranteed flood zone, only with decidedly more demogorgons and you know, cracks in the fabric of time and space that lead to another, more hellish version of your world.
And even though Will, Mike, Lucas, Dustin, and their friends definitely do not get paid enough to deal with all the near-death experiences that they consistently seem to find themselves in, the actors who play them absolutely do. In fact, the most recent salaries for the cast of the show are enough to make anyone's mind flay for real.

So, Henry Cavill is out of a job. Again.
Less than two months after the actor announced his departure from The Witcher, DC bosses revealed that they had officially cut ties with the Superman actor. “I will, after all, not be returning as Superman,” Cavill wrote on Instagram earlier this week. It was genuinely surprising news. After all, Cavill had only told fans he would be returning as the Man of Steel in October, and the reprisal seemed to be set in stone following a cameo in Dwayne Johnson’s Black Adam. Cavill, rightfully, has made no secret of his shock. “After being told by the studio to announce my return, prior to their hire, this news isn’t the easiest, but that’s life,” he said in a statement. But the actor should rejoice; he’s free at last.

The fourth season of Manifest returned the NBC-turned-Netflix show to the top of the streaming charts. The drama did not, however, have as much viewing time as it did in previous times on the rankings.
Manifest drew 1.37 billion minutes of viewing time for its 52 episodes the week of Oct. 31 to Nov. 6; the first half of its fourth season (and first as a Netflix original) premiered Nov. 4. That was good enough to take the No. 1 overall spot over Love Is Blind, which had 1.22 billion minutes.
Manifest has now crossed the billion-minute mark nine times in Nielsen’s streaming rankings, with the first coming in June 2021 — just before NBC canceled the series after three seasons. It stayed above 1 billion minutes for much of that summer, peaking at almost 2.5 billion for the week of June 14-20, 2021.

Legendary Entertainment, the production company behind “Dune” and “Godzilla vs. Kong,” has cut ties with Warner Bros. and entered a multi-year worldwide film distribution partnership with Sony Pictures.
Under the new agreement, Sony will market and distribute Legendary’s upcoming theatrical motion picture titles. However, select existing projects at Legendary are exempt from the pact, meaning Warner Bros. Pictures is still backing “Dune: Part Two.” The sequel to 2021’s sci-fi adaptation “Dune” is currently in production and slated for release on Nov. 3, 2023.
In a press release, Sony Pictures and Legendary emphasized that the companies are aligned in their “ongoing commitment to theatrical distribution as a driver for other ‘downstream’ windows and the theatrical window’s long-term value for films.”
That sentiment may be a not-so-subtle nod to Legendary’s public spat with Warner Bros. in late 2020. At the time, the production company threatened to take legal action over Warners.’ decision...

“I hate cancel culture. It has become quite hysterical and there’s a kind of witch-hunt and a lack of understanding,” said the actress.
Back in June, a Virginia jury ruled largely in Depp’s favour in his highly-publicized defamation case against ex-wife Amber Heard.
Carter told The Times that she believes Depp has been “completely vindicated” following the six-week trial.
“I think he’s fine now,” she said. “Totally fine.”
Carter also shared her belief that Heard got on the “pendulum”, when asked if Depp’s case was the “pendulum of #MeToo swinging back.

Sherlock and Mycroft are old news — the new star of the Holmes family is their forgotten teenage sister. Based on the Nancy Springer young adult book series, "Enola Holmes" features Millie Bobby Brown as both star and producer, putting her charisma on full display as the super smart, norm-shattering, corset-loathing detective who's taking Victorian London by storm. And while she is the undeniable star of this franchise, she must occasionally share the spotlight with her famous older brother, Sherlock Holmes (Henry Cavill) — an addition that makes Enola's adventures extra exciting.
This is Sherlock Holmes as we've never seen him before: navigating the endless struggle of being a middle child, with his little sister always on the verge of outsmarting him.
Together, Enola and Sherlock are this franchise's most exciting duo. Once you're done swooning over her every interaction with the fanciful Lord Tewkesbury then prepare for the utter chaos...

Before donning Superman’s cape once more, Henry Cavill reprised a different, but also well-known role with quite the fandom — Sherlock Holmes.
In Netflix’s “Enola Holmes 2,” Cavill portrays Sherlock, but as seen through the lens of his younger sister Enola (Millie Bobby Brown), who stars in the sequel. Which means that despite that post-credits scene, a Henry Cavill Sherlock movie isn’t likely in the cards.
Director Harry Bradbeer discussed how the post-credits introduction of Watson presents a foil for Sherlock, though Enola foils her brother in her own way as well. While Enola finds love with Lord Tewkesbury (Louis Partridge) after solving her case, the theme of Sherlock’s loneliness remains, and she worries for her brother.

“Ticket to Paradise” nearly swept the VOD charts this week, falling short only at Google Play. The Julia Roberts-George Clooney rom-com success, heading to a domestic theatrical gross of perhaps 75 million, hewed to the studio’s standard plan of home release after three weekends. It’s still thriving in theaters, taking #3 for the weekend, providing more evidence that theatrical play elevates films for home play. The increased marketing might even help theatrical.
Theatrical success also was key for Netflix’s new #1. “Where the Crawdads Sing.” Sony’s very successful adaptation of Delia Reese’s best seller opened mid-July with a domestic 90 million total. Theaters can’t live by comic book and other franchises alone; they need a resurgence of standalone successes in other genres. “Ticket” and “Crawdads” are also the kinds of projects that top streamers want to corral, with limited or no theatrical footprint.

Millie Bobby Brown is terrific in everything that she does. She was only nine years old when she made her acting debut on ABC's "Once Upon a Time in Wonderland," giving an endearing performance as young Alice in the inspired adaptation of the popular Lewis Carroll-created universe. Her performances throughout the "Godzilla" films, "Enola Holmes," and her career-defining role as Eleven in Netflix's "Stranger Things," a young girl with psychokinetic and telepathic abilities, only solidified her position as an incredibly talented actress. Along with being a performer, Bobby Brown has dived into the beauty industry, worked as a Unicef ambassador, and is the youngest person to be listed on Time's 100 most influential people in the world. In everything she does, she is a constant source of inspiration to teens. There's nothing Bobby Brown cannot do if she puts her mind to it — and it appears the young actress...

In the candid time-lapse video, the duo add ornaments and ribbon to a tree as they wear matching Disney pajamas. They share a tender hug at one point and also share some love with Brown's cat and dog. The Mariah Carey song that inspired Brown's caption of course plays in the video. Funnily enough, Brown has formed a friendship with Carey in recent years, and in a recent "Tonight Show" interview, she said a music collaboration isn't entirely off the table.

“It appears the game has found its feet again.” Enola Holmes’ riff on one of her brother’s most famous catchphrases is a succinct metaphor for Netflix’s reimagining of the Sherlock Holmes mythos. Warning: "Enola Holmes 2" spoilers ahead.
As much as Netflix Originals can be hit-or-miss, the company might've struck gold when they decided to adapt "Enola Holmes." A spunky, resourceful young woman, a fun mystery with lots of twists, a wholesome romantic subplot that doesn't actually end with a relationship because the teenage girl doesn't need a boyfriend to be complete — what more could you want in a feel-good movie? Sure, "Enola Holmes" might be a touch indulgent, but that's what makes it fun.
One of the most wholesome parts of the first movie might be the interactions between Enola (Millie Bobby Brown) and her mother, Eudoria (Helena Bonham Carter). Eudoria isn't around too frequently, but somehow, she's always able to lend a few words of motherly wisdom right when the going gets tough. That's why I was personally so relieved when I first heard that Bonham Carter would be returning for "Enola Holmes 2" — but unfortunately,...

Warning: Spoilers for "Enola Holmes 2" ahead.
It's happened, y'all. The spunky little detective better known as Enola Holmes is finally back. But unlike the fictional cases that turned Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes into a wildly successful character, "Enola Holmes 2" sees his younger sister Enola get caught up in real-life events — namely, the matchgirls' strike of 1888, which was organized by employees of the Bryant & May match factory.
"Enola Holmes 2" doesn't try to hide the fact that it borrowed heavily from reality. An opening title card tells viewers that "the important parts" of the movie are true, while another at the closing acknowledges the strike and its effects. However, the Enola Holmes series is far from somber. Long story short, it's safe to assume that screenwriter Jack Thorne took some creative liberties when adapting the strike for the big- (medium- ?) screen, which poses a big question:...

The original "Enola Holmes," directed by "Fleabag" helmer Harry Bradbeer and based on Nancy Springer's book series "The Enola Holmes Mysteries," burst onto the scene with surprising aplomb. Following Enola Holmes (an excellent Millie Bobbie Brown), the brilliant and rebelliously independent teen sister of Sherlock (Henry Cavill) and Mycroft (Sam Claflin), the first film sees young Enola working to find Holmes matriarch Eudoria (Helena Bonham Carter) and discovering that a bigger mystery is afoot. The freshman mystery adaptation was smartly written and charming with a wonderful performance by star and producer Millie Bobbie Brown. With the groundwork laid for a strong second outing, "Enola Holmes 2" had a number of legs up on its forebear outing alongside relevantly higher stakes.

The actress tells Et Canada’s Morgan Hoffman what makes teasing Cavill on set “so fun.”
“He’s an introvert and I’m not,” the actress said, adding that she likes to tease him with her “very loud” personality.
“I just make him really uncomfortable which is what I’m good at,” she added.

Brown explained that her teasing Cavill simply involves singing and talking to him about reality dating shows, something that “he’s just not interested” in.
“That’s like stage one [of teasing] for me,” she joked. “We haven’t even gotten to stage 10.”

Millie Bobby Brown has revealed why she’s fearful of returning to Stranger Things after filming Enola Holmes 2.
The 18-year-old British actor recently reprised her role as the young detective Enola who enlists the help of her friends and brother Sherlock Holmes (Henry Cavill) to solve the mystery of a missing girl.
Ahead of the Netflix sequel’s release on 27 October, Brown joined the cast for a Q&a at the movie’s New York City premiere.
When speaking about the Sherlock Holmes spinoff, she compared it to “vlogging on YouTube all day long.”
“It’s like, ‘Come along with me on another journey. I wake up. I go on another case,’ I mean, it’s amazing,” she explained (via Today).
Throughout the movie, Brown’s Enola often breaks the fourth wall speaking directly to the camera about new developments in her case.
However, the actor’s Eleven does no such thing in Stranger Things.

Millie Bobby Brown’s eccentric fourth wall breaks have become such a distinguishable trademark of Harry Bradbeer’s “Enola Holmes” films that in the sequel, the “Stranger Things” star tried to do it in every scene she could.
“Maybe Harry can agree with me on this but I think in every scene we tried doing, we tried breaking the fourth wall and then he edited the ones that landed the most,” Brown told Variety at the New York premiere of “Enola Holmes 2” on Thursday night at the Paris Theater.
Brown went on to say that she took inspiration from Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s fourth wall-breaking techniques in “Fleabag,” the critically acclaimed Amazon Prime series on which Bradbeer also served as a director.
“It’s just like the most perfect way to break the fourth wall with her wit, her humor, her timing,” Bobby Brown said. “It’s so inspirational to me.

Henry Cavill can’t say much about his return as Superman in the Dceu — but he’s feeling the love!
Et’s Rachel Smith spoke with the actor at the “Enola Holmes 2” premiere in New York City on Thursday, where he dished a tiny bit on his recently confirmed return as the Man of Steel.
“Right now I can’t really talk about anything,” Cavill admitted. “What I do want is hope, optimism and joy. Those three things are essential in a character.”
As for his return as another iconic character, Sherlock Holmes, in the “Enola Holmes” sequel, Cavill said he’s glad to be back in the “feel-good” franchise.
“It’s fun,” he said of the series, which stars Millie Bobby Brown as the titular sleuth, Sherlock’s mischievous younger sister. “It feels good to watch the movie, even though there is a very real and important message which is within the story.

The sequel to "Enola Holmes" comes out on Netflix next week, and it's just as delightful as the first one. "Enola Holmes 2" lets us catch up with the younger sister of the famous detective Sherlock Holmes (Henry Cavill), who is just as brilliant (if not more) than he is. A little older now, Enola ("Stranger Things" actor Millie Bobby Brown who also serves as producer) is opening her own detective agency. Not that anyone is taking her seriously. That is until a young girl comes looking for her missing sister. Enola is on the case again, and the game is afoot.
This time around, though, it's not just a single missing girl. She's connected to something much bigger, and it has roots in the real-life story of Sarah Chapman and the Matchstick Girls Strike of 1888. It was the first major protest by women, for women, as director Harry Bradbeer said in our recent interview.

One year after making their relationship Instagram official, "The Witcher" star Henry Cavill and his girlfriend, Natalie Viscuso, finally made their red carpet debut at the "Enola Holmes 2" premiere in New York City on Thursday. Cavill, who stars as Sherlock Holmes in the mystery film alongside Millie Bobby Brown as the title character, arrived dressed like a cross between the consulting detective and another of his onscreen roles: Clark Kent, aka Superman.
The crossover outfit comes just days after Cavill confirmed he'll be returning as the superhero in an upcoming film. Playing off Superman's signature look, Cavill let a few stray waves drape across his forehead, drawing attention to his pinstripe suit and herring-red tie, the perfect complement to Viscuso's creamy, film-noir-style cape dress. Holding each other in a sweet embrace, the couple posed for the cameras with smiles on their faces.

It’s hard to say how much “Enola Holmes,” the younger sister of Sherlock Holmes story adapted from the YA fiction series of the same name by Nancy Springer, penetrated into the pop culture space. Sure, “Stranger Things” star Millie Bobbie Brown led the movie, and Netflix gave it a sequel and called it a hit, but don’t they do that with everything?
But the reality is, in case you missed it, and it feels like some more cynical audiences thought it might not be for them, “Enola Holmes” was absolutely delightful.
