S3: A little too glossy but has enough ground in there to keep it on track

I've never quite seen the perfect show that others describe when talking about Insecure, but perhaps part of this is that the experiences, culture, and places are far from those of this Belfast-born lad. However, I have appreciated that it has this grounded core which seems to present a real person, with all her weakness, struggles, and failings - albeit one who can also live the high-life in LA while also seeming to be on a low income. The third season continues what works for me, but also pushes the elements I see as a necessary evil - specifically the 'black Sex in the City' gloss and shine that is throughout this season. It has always been there of course, but this season wears it so much more than previous, and I did find it a bit off-putting and easy to lose the characters within it.

A lot of ground is covered in this season, with Issa on two and a half serious relationships, and going through a life-changing career change too; meanwhile Molly also is having relationship and work drama. The various friends and associated relationships also cause drama and change. This busyness means the show has a lot of energy this season, but it also limits the impact of some of it - as in much of it didn't have time to sink in at the character level. That said, Issa remains a great character and very engaging, but Molly felt less developed this time round. The relationship stuff is the core strength though, and it drives the season forward with the small interactions. The gloss make it easier to watch and more marketable for HBO, and it does work, but it is this core that keeps it together.

Not a season that will do much for the unconvinced, but for those loving the core strengths of the show there is still a lot here, even if the success of the show is showing in the delivery.
