I Want My Money Back
carolanne44329 May 2022
I watched this on Amazon for a price - and almost immediately wished I could get my money back. This wasn't the exciting fairytale fantasy I was expecting. The story feels random, the execution doesn't make any sense, and the editing/effects feel very unprofessional. A definite "no" for me.

Watchable, but...
paul_haakonsen9 April 2022
Two things drew me to watch the 2022 fantasy adventure movie "A Fairy Tale After All", and that was the movie's cover/poster and also the fact that I hadn't already seen the movie. So of course I opted to sit down to watch it and see what writer and director Erik Peter Carlson had to offer.

"A Fairy Tale After All" is definitely a well-suited family movie, I will say that much, and the storyline was adequate. However, it was just a bit too Disneyesque for me. You know, where everything is something that has to be delivered by singing. Yeah, there certainly was a lot of singing in this movie, and it wasn't exactly what I was expecting.

The storyline felt somewhat chaotic and scrambled, and as it if was somewhat devoid of a proper red thread for the audience to follow. So it was something that was reminiscent of writer and director Erik Peter Carlson just making things up as he went along.

The acting performances in "A Fairy Tale After All" were adequate. It wasn't a cast ensemble that I was familiar with, and that is something I do enjoy when I watch movies. It was Bridget Winder, playing Madame Mizrabel, whom actually stood out as the most memorable in the movie in my opinion, both in performance and most interesting character.

Aside from the human cast, then the movie also made use of puppets in the form of animal teddy bear-like creatures. They were actually enjoyable and fun, as they added a comic relief to the storyline. And truth be told, they were actually nicely made.

If you enjoy fairy tales, then I suppose "A Fairy Tale After All" should be something right up your alley. However, all the singing just took the overall enjoyment down a notch or two for me, as did the somewhat disjointed storyline.

My rating of "A Fairy Tale After All" lands on a less than mediocre four out of ten stars.

Awfully directed! The whole movie is based on a really terrible storyline which hasn't even been properly shown to the viewers . The songs are hideously bad , the scenes have no effort of proper directing. The lighting, videography really isn't up to the level of an fantasy . The effects displayed of the parallel universe dimensions are not at all sequenced together proportionately. The drift of the different dimensions aren't portrayed and co-ordinated quite right at all . The movie looks moreover like straightaway from an horror universe with rather complex fantasy characters which are hard to understand and hard to walk with the story . The animations and Gif-like pictures , vids and funny noises makes the movie more worse .

Absolutely dreadful

Warning: Spoilers
A Fairytale After All is a 2022 fantasy musical directed by Erik Peter Carlson(who is a YouTuber) and features Brian Hull(another YouTuber who was last seen in Hotel Transylvania 4),Emily Shenaut,Tobin Cleary and Lucie Jones. Combining puppetry, 2D animation and live action the story is about a young woman named Skylar who is a big fan of fairytales.

However when an accident occurs at school that leads Skylar to faint, she awakens into another world where she is greeted by a wise cracking puppet fox named Thumpkins(Brian Hull sporting a Robin Williams impression),and a dashing prince. However when Skylar discovers that her father is kidnapped by an evil witch(Bridget Winder) its up to the unlikely trio to set out to find Skylar's father.

Its clear that the director of this film is a massive Jim Henson and Disney fan as this film felt like I was watching a Disney/Jim Henson film meets a YouTube Parody. The songs are forgettable as the girl playing Sky is dubbed by Chelsi Hardcastle.

Overall this film was terrible from its weird editing,to its terrible acting this film isn't worth watching. It makes The Dark Crystal look Oscar worthy, but it instead feels like The Room back in 2003. Another thing I forgot to add was the actress playing Skylar was far too old for the part. I get the likes of 10 Things I Hate About You and High School Musical had old actors playing teens but they looked like teens. If you like Jim Henson you might like it and kids might like it too(although they might get bored). For a running time of 70 minutes it felt like I wasn't watching a film,it felt like I was watching a 70 minute YouTube video Parody.

Very confusing
marikats122627 February 2022
I saw positive reviews about this and I'm even more confused than this movie left me? Bad acting, bad directing, absolutely chaotic and messy plot, too scary for children but definitely not coherent enough for adults. Also, they put on these huge unnatural contact lenses on the lead actress that made her off-putting at best, and scary at worst. Speaking of which, I know most movies cast adults to play teens, but she could not pass as a teen at all, it was actually bothersome to watch. I want to know who thought that this, any part of this, was a good idea, and who (and why?!) reviewed it positively. I rarely experience something so horrid, but I did this time, and if I save one person from going through this mind-numbing, bizarre and all around baffling experience, it'll be worth leaving this review.

Kids play.
XueHuaBingYu19 February 2022
Oh, my god! Why did I decide to watch this film? This film is so terrible. From casting to original score, everything's bad. Bad enough to unbearable. I couldn't continue after 30 minutes. (I even regretted that I watched for 30 minutes.) So, for me, it's not worth to watch it.

Must avoid film.

Couldn't Watch More Than A Few Minutes
joeshmoe-637994 April 2022
Is there another movie with the same name? Hard to believe anyone could rate this more than one. Seems like it was shot by an amateur film maker with a hand camera. Horrible acting, singing, music.

Weird fever dream?????

Warning: Spoilers
If anyone is ever going to ask me an example of a terrible movie, I will make them watch this. Not only is the plot nowhere to be found, the aesthetics, moods and scenes keep on changing with little to no explanation, the film just didn't feel or look like it was taking itself serious. I think the main issue I have with this movie is that the director wanted too many things and had too little patience to really work out the things that needed it and instead focused on things that were unnecessary and weird to the plot. Character's desires were unclearly told, the second act was a complete mess and mix of every genre known to men and I think the director only cared about the songs and their ability to make them look like music videos. It looked and felt like I was watching a high-schoolers film project, not a real film. And of course, maybe I'm a little harsh. It is a children's movie after all. But there was a literal scene where the cast stands on top of a building and looks at a castle, and the ENTIRE room burst out in laughter because you could see the wrinkles in the terrible looking greenscreen. Please, if you want to watch a movie with your children on a fun Sunday afternoon, don't pick this one. Pick something that's actually worth your time.

New worst
esromevets-9656415 May 2022
I came nostalgic for the fantasy puppet movies of my youth and was willing to forgive a lot. This film is unforgivable. Possibly the worst I've ever seen. Reminds me of highschool av club made movies. I still dont know what the plot was if there was one so I couldn't write spoilers if i tried. I think someone got a free package of thunder and lighting effects and assumed thats all you need to tie scenes together. The 40 something playing a teen is also weird but hardly worth mentioning with how bad every other detail is. Pure cringe.

Never had a film made me rate it ..... until now
vikicook-235765 September 2022
Just don't bother!!! As a adult who grew up obsessing over the labyrinth the magic the puppets the costumes !!! I was so excited when I came across this film. Oh but how I was wrong !!!!!! I regret setting my eyes upon this film. The only saving grace is that I'm glad I didn't purchase to watch on Apple TV but instead waited n watched it on Amazon at no extra charge. This film deserves to be placed in the deepest darkest oubliette Never to be found again, the plot was messy it was hard to follow it's more of a feverish nightmare that's never ending, I'm actually typing this as it plays I'm that bothered by it, the trailer was more impressive but oversold on an epic scale.

The entire family watched and loved this movie! It was a perfect mix of a fairytale life and muppet babies. It was entertaining and the songs were so catchy. My granddaughter is singing the songs around the house now. Get your popcorn ready and enjoy some family time!!!!

Fun family film!
lovetoocake19 February 2022
This film may not be the perfect Oscar contender, but it's quite obvious that's not the goal here. The film maker is clearly a fan of Jim Henson content and he does his best to recreate that type of experience.

The songs are excellent and catchy. There are some moments of humor that are light-hearted and slightly self-referential.

Overall it's a fun movie that really tries to blend an emotional tale of the loving bond of father-daughter with a whimsical puppeteer driven approach that gives the viewer quite a nostalgic kick.

The negative reviews were not wrong.
katweb-5973527 March 2022
I should have gone with the negative reviews and passed on this one. The trailer made it look like a Labyrinth-ESC-type movie, so I was super excited to see it. However, very soon after starting the movie, I found that the negative reviews were more true than not. The film was odd and hard to follow, with a huge dash of bad acting. My children (10 & 12) kept glaring over at me because I picked it, and eventually they asked if I would turn it off. Roughly 45 minutes in I decided to just take the L and find a new movie. I wish I could get my money back.

The most painful movie ever, you would be better off watching Cocomelon
a-gordon-237417 April 2022
This movie is pure torture. It's worse than Cocomelon, Teletubbies, and Caillou combined. The acting is 100% atrocious. The special effects are terrible. The dialog and writing are just awful.

No way the 10 star reviews are legitimate, they were probably written by people who made the movie.

Kids movies do NOT have to be excruciatingly painful for anyone over the age of 4 to watch. There are plenty of kids movies that are tolerable for adults and actually have good stories or decent acting. This isn't one of them. Just have your kids watch Toy Story or literally anything else.

Ok......?
bombasticvolcanos9 May 2022
There is so much going on here. Just so much. Basically it's a series of seriously weird and disturbing music videos strung together with a very loose plot.

"Here's a movie I started writing when I was 7"
graeme-870-33368612 June 2022
Written, directed and produced by the same person for his first movie attempt ... that should be have been warning enough. This is a movie filled with disconnected original songs, set pieces, Muppet puppets, red filter scenes... a middle school fever dream that somehow made it to the screen.

1* is too generous.

Director doesn't know how to articulate the story correctly!
reaganjoey21 April 2022
Overall the movie is a want too be knock off movie that resembles Disney, but fells to reach even a standard of a home made film. The characters are scary the story line is hard to follow. I just couldn't watch the whole movie. I felt like the director stole one of Walt Disneys classics and, failed madly! DONT WASTE YOUR TIME.

I thought it was dreadfully unwatchable
fluffchop6 May 2022
I turned this off very quickly. I didn't enjoy it. They lost me at the first outburst of unwarranted singing. I was saying why couldn't this be a Disney film. They know how to make fairy tale movies.

Most of the reviewers have given this so-called movie
Most of the reviewers have given this so-called movie either one or ten stars and I cannot do otherwise to rate such a messy and rumbling video with a strong musical hint of Frozen (2013) but with a Murikan accent and a cliché Instagram feel.

Five stars for the efforts and creativity but waste of time to watch.
m-vanpuyenbroeck30 October 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I usually don't rate movies unless they left an unforgettable impression after watching it.

This one did but not in a positive way. I fell asleep somewhere in the first 20-30 minutes and based on what I saw till then, I'm happy I did.

There is only one word that can describe this movie: worst! The beginning of the movie was promising. The view of a princess hiding for her duties, sneaking in and out of her hideout to steal strawberry cakes in the kitchen of the castle, was fun and refreshing and made me wonder where this would lead to. But allas, the script is going all places without any feeling for coherence.

However I think I can see the intention of the director with the mix of real life actors, different styles of animation and cinematography but the story, the acting, the singing and the editing annihilated the most of the message behind the creativity. With another cast, a better script and a better editor this movie can be so much more.

A great film for Kids and Adults.
craigbruss-62-17380921 February 2022
I thought this movie was very creative. It was great to see puppets again like the Muppets, Fragile Rock and Sesame Street. The movie reminded me of Labyrinth and Neverending Story. Thanks Erik for making my Blockbuster weekend.

Brilliantly done, a breath of life in a wary film industry
mac_unknown18 February 2022
Nice to finally see a creative movie in this genre that's not a Hollywood remake!!!

The director did an incredible job of reviving the beloved puppet-style movie. My child and her friends truly enjoyed it and I'm glad they did, as now I can introduce them to some classics. Wonderful cast and beautiful musical tracks. Very original and one of a kind; something badly missed.

It's original content! The songs are catchy!!!

This movie is so charming
robertmercado-act7 August 2023
I watched for the puppet and stood for all the campy goodness! Wish I saw this when I was a kid I would have been obsessed! And I'm pretty sure Waspinator from Beast Wars is a voice actor in this project. The cast did a great job. And the songs were a delight loved MISERABLE number from the villain! They made good use of the budget and there were plenty of surprises throughout. They even manage to tug at the heart strings and I enjoyed the entire ride. I am gonna be Recommending this one for years to come. Truly every actor nailed their performances. The director and writer should be very proud. Job well done guys!
