Awe is slightly flawed but commendable experimental film which is much needed for Telugu Cinema.
shobanchittuprolu17 February 2018
Warning: Spoilers
Awe (2018):

Awe is one of the rare films which promised us an unique experience from the first looks itself.Awe' has been in the news for the reason that the film is presented by hero Nani. With several prominent actresses featuring in it, the film also increased buzz around it.Directed by debutante Prashanth Varma,Awe has finally hit the screens yesterday.SO how is it?

Plot: The film begins with Kaali (Kajal Aggarwal) coming to a restaurant and starts scribbling something. The film then reveals episodes about several people present at the restaurant. The people present at the restaurant are - a watchman Shiva (Avasarala), a chef Nala (Priyadarshi), a stewardess Meera (Regina), two lesbian customers Radha (Eesha) and Krish (Nithya Menen) and a magician Yogi (Murali Sharma). How are they linked with Kaali? And what is the final twist in the tale?

My Review:

Awe is an unusual film. The trailer didn't give away anything, except the fact that a few well-known actors have come together to do something new. A film like this can be a double-edged sword, with potential to be a game changer or end up as an experiment not many would care to watch. Awe turned out to be a slow-burn, shape-shifting film as it introduced its key characters and the strange worlds they inhabit.

Awe is hyperlink kinda film which involves 7 different stories which are happening in the same restaurant. Each and every individual story is interesting and blend of many genres. There is drama,comedy,fantasy,sci-fi and horror too.But no story gives not even a slightest hint of where it is leading.SO many may feel them boring after some extent.

Climax twist reveal all the answers to the audience with brilliantly made scene but it will definitely get mixed reactions from audience.Few people will get it and many may not and even to the people who understood the twist will start questioning more which leads to more questions.

Performances are amazing and such stellar cast in a single film really is amazing. Each and every character have done their roles with perfection.Nani and Ravi Teja are amazing with their comedy timing and dialogue delivery.

With cinematographer Karthik Ghattamaneni and composer Mark K Robin, the director treats each of the segments and characters differently, with distinct colour palettes and background scores. When it all comes together with the big, final reveal, it turns out to be a a laudable idea and the writer-director doesn't over-explain this to his audience and had given enough hints throughout the film, especially in title credits and theme song.

Director Prashanth Varma's idea had been shelved for lot of years as producers aren't fully confident about the film. We have seen festival films like Ship of Theseus and Lucie (Kannada) made in other languages and we hardly see any such attempts made in Telugu with capable makers. Awe is such a film. This film has a different format of story telling. The screenplay of the film is excellent. Direction is very good. The director has written the script meticulously and all scenes are interconnected. But he desperately added some complex segments like Time travel and magician elements which reveals flaws.

So,Awe is slightly flawed but commendable experimental film which is must needed for Telugu Cinema.

Taking tollywood to next level.
sandeepparamkusam19 February 2018
Yes, Its really an awesome movie. The story line is very interesting. There will be different characters at different stages of our life and if all of them coming at once is the thing the director wants to show.

'Predestination' meets 'Identity'.
Amyth4725 February 2019
Warning: Spoilers
My Rating : 8/10

One of those movies that plays with your head with it's contrived logic. It's not exactly difficult to decipher and deconstruct it - it's actually a very simple film with lots of ideas, genres and themes explored - Sci-fi. Check. LGBTQ. Check. Comedy. Check. Thriller. Check. Horror. Check. And then there's all kinds of weird and unique things going on all over the place and the end climax reveal twist balances everything out with absolute grace. One can learn a lot from the unique and experimental narrative structure even though it is a bit flawed and takes inspiration from other movies.

If made by a Luis Bunuel or Alejandro Jodorowsky this would be considered a work of genius. So I am just going to imagine that it is. Please watch it - it really makes for a great 'pleasure-of-the-first-viewing' movie.

"Awe"some & "Awe"struck
sowmyad-2225320 February 2018
This review, doesn't have any spoilers, this movie should just be experienced , review has only description of the roles. This movie is next generation Telugu movie and should be called as path breaking movie in TFI. All credits to the film makers for taking up such interesting storyline. Blending all the genres (thriller, horror, sentiment, comedy, fantasy and many more) in one movie is great attempt. It just takes you to emotional roller coaster ride in all scenes.

Watch the movie with zero expectation & open mind , you will just go "AWE" in every scene. Climax is the heart of the movie, Every scene is important which connects to events happening in climax, don't miss it.

Regina's transformation and her act is commendable. She carried off the thriller, horror acts in scenes very well.

Kajal did her best , she did a great job in such emotionally draining character. She is the sole of the movie & her mystery is the climax. Kajal can pull off any look, she just proves that every time. she is the best.

Nitya broke the type casting of her for only certain roles, she pulled off her character with ease.

I never watched Esha's movies till Awe, she is well suited for her role & her looks are very pretty. She added some color to the frame.

Priya Darshi is only character every one would be jealous of, he has the super powers to listen and talk to fish & tree. His part is hilarious and he just aced his role.

Srinivas Avasarala & Darshini acted in sync with each other , they just felt like twins. So aptly casted. No doubt they are good actors anyway, but they both just did the roles which is unconventional for them till date and they are brilliant in them too.

Murali Sharma's & little girl's part was so new & lot of fantasy elements added. He is too good.

Last but not the least, actors who can even act with their voices. Nani & Ravi Teja...GREAT work!!! They take you to comical, emotional, inspirational, light moments with just their voices. Such a talent!!

You would not imagine any others in all the roles except them. They are just so perfect in their roles.

On the whole this is a very new ,fresh movie with unconventional roles, breaking stereo types and makes you to think .Good times in TFI has arrived. Hope this movie finds its way and become a PAN India movie & recognized more. Thanks to the team for your work and making telugu audiences proud of Telugu cinema.

Best Telugu movie I have ever seen till date
pranav-vaidik19 February 2018
To describe this film in one word is just not possible. The way this movie was made is amazing. It will take your mind off whatever's going on around you for a couple of hours. The last five minutes are the most amazing minutes of the movie. While some may understand it, some just won't. More importantly, the movie makes you think about things deeply. Definitely worth every penny I have spent on this movie, and I won't hesitate to do so again. This movie is a 12/10, too bacd Imdb doesnt allow ratings above 10..:P

Watch Identity (2003)

The director tried to create a similar movie as Identity (2003). Used the same reveal as well. Too much hype, disappointing.

Overhyped
shravanbelde5 March 2018
It's one of those films which find a perfect balance in trying to stretch people's brains just enough that they appreciate it but not too much that they totally reject it. Dimwits will absolutely love it, but brainy ones will find it to be one-time watch! Not a bad film though!

Epic level experiment!!
rutu-248408 May 2020
What I have just watched!!! I am just speechless. I just couldn't believe that this cinema is Indian cinema. Bollywood needs to learn a lot from regional movies. Almost everything is excellent in the movie. Though at sometimes, people will find the pace of cinema is slow and boring, but believe me at the end of movie, the director will convince you. The movie depicts the struggles of female life very well. I would say this is the best experiment Indian cinema has ever done. The oscar- worth movie. I am impressed.. 😊

Psychological Thriller
nagarajubhu25 February 2018
It is an unconventional Telugu film exploring the several untouched themes. The story is good, and the music intensifies the scenes. As the film is supposed to be low budget indie project, the restrictions in Production are evident at several points. The screenplay is not racy and has several unnecessary scenes that slow down the intense thriller plot. The entire film depends heavily on climax as there are hardly any elements to hook audience till climax. Overall, it's a decent attempt in Telugu cinema.

Warning: Spoilers
Seriously, I watch movies regularly and I am a movie buff. When I've watched the movie trailer I thought this movie is something crazy and its going to be a mind freaking movie. TFI call this so called "Pulp Fiction" of tollywood. I am not sure how this is justified and I assume that film producers are very naive . They are just the venture capitalists to directors because a director hypnotizes the producer to invest in his idea . Even the producer want to make quick bucks with minimal investment and if the director involves in practice of taking someone else's work or ideas and passing them off as one's own then I feel movie audiences do not watch psychological thrillers because this movie is pure technical piece and people do not like technical movies , they like mass movies and love stories , emotional sequences . This movie is a technical movie with bit of emotional scenes and plagiarism. This movie's plot is taken from the movie called "PREDESTINATION" .(http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2397535/) . This movie is edited version of "PREDESTINATION". The director of this movie might survive in TFI with this kind of plagarism techniques but could not compete with technical people like Vikram K Kumar.

Kind Regards Nani

2018 a much need break for Telugu cinema ( mark for change )
venkat-kommula17 February 2018
Being a movie buff from childhood... been a great fan of world cinema every time I watch a movie would be wonder struck or would have rush or a great feel at the end of ever movie which was never there in Telugu cinema till date ( i was bored watching love stories all my life there is not even one movie with out a girl and a boy in love , where love is the centric point let it be faction , reveng drama , school for God sake any thing in the world its a f*****g love story ) there is more to cinema than love

AWE filled that huge gap .....Being honest when I saw the trailer it didn't draw my attention as the trailer cut was chracter driven i felt it was a little messy ... over all it a great attempt would like to congurlate both the producers for taking up a task of creating a experience trough cinema

The director prashanth varma has done a treamondus job there were few weak point in the seconds half but it was honest attempt to connect the dots his vision was well supported by a great team of actors shots was sharp a well supported art work over all one man's vision carried out by talented team which resulted in a great team work

At the end of the movie my hands went up and i stared claping no words to explain my joy of watching a movie

Sad part is They were around 20 people in the theater producer's wont make any money .... majority of audines have been treated like zoo fed animals when a raw movie comes out they feel alienated as they can't hunt it down and digest it because they were hand fed all the time

It's my personal opinean it's not a review irs just my experiences watching cinema not to offend any one

Well, a wasted potential...
simon-icecold15 September 2019
Just watched the movie and I must say, it's overdramatised beyond comprehension. It is however a brilliant idea, the concept is great and the person who wrote this is a friggin genius. But there are a lot scenes which wasn't really required in the movie. Indeed a wasted potential as an amazing idea killed by silly drama. The characters could've been depicted a lot better. The movie is heavily dependent on it's climax which leads the audience to think otherwise while watching it. But to the viewers- please do sit through it. It will all make sense in the end. And yes, the ending is very polarizing. And I enjoyed that. Anyways, my verdict is Amazing idea that could've been made better. A real wasted potential. Hence 6 on 10.

An Emotional Journey
Shanmuk-Kumar13 August 2018
This is one of the fresh and gripping movies you see which pops out of nowhere. Sometimes such movies take you by surprise not just for their presentation or work by the entire team but the fact that someone came forward and took that step to make such a different approach movie.

Ok, leaving aside whether it is not readily comprehensible by the audience the direction, screenplay, photography, music, dialogues and the underlying message etc all have struck top notch. Wonderful to see all the crew's talent on screen. This is a symbol of their craftsmanship.

Along with that start studded cast adds to the movie strengths. Probably it is not very often one can come along such characters to portray in their acting careers. Kudos to the entire team and special mention to the producer who came forward to make this possible.

A well made film with messed up ending
Awe! tells us about 5 different stories/events happening simultaneously under a single building. Each one belongs to a different genre, is fresh, unrelated to the other and are very well crafted. The two segments involving murli sharma were weakest and could have been avoided. I was interested in Shiva and eeva's story and wanted to know more about the time travel story. With each segment, you get more interested to watch the mystery unfold. And the ending dissapoints. It was supposed to explain everything and it does not. Good thing is that the director did not try to put a stupid explanation there, but that doesn't make it any more logical.

Barring that the film is actually good. The credit goes to the director Prashanta Varma for the way he made it. Also, use of colours in this film is good, it actually got a national award for best VFX(can't say whether it's deserving or not).

The film could've been a lot better without the ending i.e, there was no need to give it a proper ending. It would be better if ended on a cliffhanger .

What a waste of time
santubhattacharjee24 November 2020
This is the second time, I went for a movie after many recommendations. First was 'Item patakha tota maal'. And totally annoyed by the fact that people think taking up social issues and putting them in pot will make the dish delicious. But forget it's not only the ingredient that makes a food delicious, the cooking process is equally important.

For the anecdote for first 10 mins.. you get interested expecting something bold or new to discover.. but you soon realize your mistake when the next story starts. Coincidentally, the character name is 'Nala' which translates in my language to gutter. Quite appropriate.

Wish all the best for people who praise of this utter garbage.

One of the best movie in TFI till date.
smruthi-743318 February 2020
Acting of every single character was perfect. Though kajal's role is less in duration, her performance was the best in entire career. She totally deserves the best actress award if her role was longer. The story was fantastic. The conflict that every character faces is shown perfectly. The messages were conveyed neatly. The climax was beyond expectations. And there are many unnoticed things that make this movie more fantastic....

Spine Chilling and Mind Fu**cking
pritambag7 May 2020
A total spine chilling and mind fu**cking psychological thriller highlighting the entangled web of mind. From the starting point it keeps you engaging, yet it makes you stunned when the mysteries reveal out. Absolutely brilliant and offbeat performance from Kajal Agarwal. And the ensemble cast too. The storyline, the execution, the performances every thing was of top notch. The main highlight was the storytelling style. I personally loved it and will surely recommend it. Do watch it if you want a mindf**cking experience.
