Transfigurations and morphing love!
babyjaguar11 January 2018
This film is unique, one can tell that there was a lot of passion by the director, Yang Xiao (there was enough action plus CGI with it). I feel that there were some gaps maybe due to edits with the love narrative. Its a long film, running close to 2 hours and explores taboo themes, from sexual transgressions, trans identity to shadow governments, in the film there is the B.O.T that regulates transmorphing or "transfiguring" animal gods with ordinary humans.

If you are open-minded with this film; it can serve you great entertainment. Xiao had a lot of requirements for actors, to look ordinary or stylized. The strongest part is the main protagonists getting away from villains on a film set, kind of a film within a film idea.

Hanson and the Beast is a fantasy comedy film directed by Xiao Yang and stars Feng Shaofeng, Liu Yifei, Li Guanjie and Guo Jingfei.

A Debt ridden animal breeder falls in love with a human fox, she pays his debt as a gratitude.

Wasn't very keen to watch after seeing the average ratings of the film but the film was entertaining although there were few flaws in the film but that doesn't plays any spoilsport in the film viewing.

The plot of the film is good and the screenplay is predictable but decent, there are lots of funny one liners and funny scenes which surely will entertain you and will keep your funny bones tickling.

Acting is good and all the characters were impressive, Climax of the film was predictable but good. Graphics of the film was substandard. There were few gaps in the film is a minor flaw and can be avoided.

Over a decently entertaining Chinese comedy film.

Its Fun and Entertaining
leonshikto4 December 2019
Yes, the movie could have been something exceptional but they wanted to make it more romantic and comedy rather than focusing on a dramatic storytelling. The movie was fun to watch and had some unexpected moments with a simple story.

According to my rating strategy : Story:1/2, Actors:1/2, Viewer:1/2, Directing, Cinematography and Soundtrack:1/2, Task Fulfillment:1/1, Wow Factor: 0/1

It looks like it was written and directed by 12 years old kids, but I believe it comes from Asian culture of movie making. The demonic world is interesting and its make me giggle a bit how the the main bureau characters are posy. But what really makes me love this movie are cute animal sounds. Also, if you like furry romance or unnatural jumping, you can add star from each.

Brilliant mix of modern and legendary in Shangai!
M1racl3sHapp3n28 March 2018
This movie has found a way to breakthrough a lot of stereotypes and present a fantastic comedy where the so called regular reality and the fantasy world run parallel but only a few are allowed to see it. Ultimately, it's a story about love; modern love which goes beyond any barriers you could possibly imagine. The acting is brilliant and totally convincing. If you like fantasy garnished with a pinch of sense of humor in a sci-fi/ fantasy environment, you shouldn't miss this movie: entertainment granted!

The film is not as childish as it looks like, it's a Satirical film
thefrightofrealtears1 August 2018
Warning: Spoilers
First of all, I give it a ten because the score is way too low from what it really deserves.

This story looks like a cliche, childish legend that is simply moved into a modern framework. Well Hanson and the Beast contains many interesting, ignored, and even taboo subject matters in the modern Chinese society. One most obvious cynicism goes to the portray of the villain, Yun, who looks like a demon Hitler advocating pureblood against human intermarriage. However, if you look closely, his policy is more than for pureblood but for ideology control. That's it. The BOT is a metaphor of China's censorship bureau. They filter positive news outside the wall and spread negative rumors toward their imagined enemies. They prohibit interaction because it threatens their power legitimacy.

The human world is depicted as a place filling with "ignored those," of those who are often dismissed and not to mention in the official narratives. The protagonist is indebted; his father has been mentally mad and hospitalized, which is still a rarely-mentioned taboo in most Chinese families. He attends arranged-marriage meetings with new money, who got rich via the compensation payment for house demolition. He meets lesbians, who cannot come out of the closets, have to fake marriage, and must have to bred to fulfill their parents' wishes. Another gay hidden in the set is when Xiao Bai serves in a karaoke pub. The man does not act like a hacker at all. He is obviously a gay hesitating about his own orientation, and thus comes to find girls with his butterfly-demon sister. Both the indebted protagonist and his debater are ordinary extras holding dreams of becoming actors, the lowest layer in pyramid of film industry.

The film have two major fights, both of which adopt a satirical way to finish the conflicts between the week (protagonist's side) and the strong ones (BOT). The protagonist is an actor, and the film also highlights a reality-in-fake frame to conceal the conflicts. Actors and filmmakers apply their weapon-the ability to act and the knowledge of film- as the keys to escape, to sneak in, or to break out of the prison. The method is funny and kinda deconstructionism. Moreover, this is also a strategy that the film takes, that is, to use a satirical attitude against those tough social realities.

Excellent commercial film, laugh a little dense. The heroine is too beautiful, beautiful and interesting, the way to pursue the hero is funny and lovely. The movie's goblins world is set to be fun and ending well

The theme is great
zeekwunlau9 May 2020
Warning: Spoilers
This movie does not focus on the promotion of the feeling of inequality and inequality in the fox and fox. Even defining it as love / comedy is somewhat inappropriate, and the film has a more worthy meaning. Even in love, the relationship between the man and the demon in the film is far less humble than the song. Why did the fox insist on willingly living with the male protagonist, in order to repay his gratitude, and to reward the male protagonist who once blocked sulfuric acid for her. "You have a lot of things that humans lack-kindness" is very deep and sad. A marriage was born because of the love of the little male master for the small animals. His good deeds made the little fox feel that humans are not all ugly-at least he is not. The so-called villain in the play, Crane in the Cloud, strongly opposes the intimate contact between the demon and humans, and strives to render human sin in the world of demon. "Think about it, fellow citizens, how will they treat your family, they will make your wife into a coat, and they will soak your children in the wine jar." Although the person is a villain, the final result is bleak, but stand by him From a perspective, his original intention is not wrong. Demon is also an animal. Let people examine the status of humans and other living bodies in nature, and provoke thinking, which is the theme that the film wants to express more. I'm not standing on the commanding heights of morality to say something. The dominance of human beings on the earth is absolute, whether it is for development or for the needs of life, or even to meet vanity, there is no way to avoid the sacrifice of other creatures, and there is no intention to blame all kinds. I just hope that when I ask them, I can give them the land that can thrive and ensure the continuation of the species. It is just hope that in daily life, a sense of respect is preserved. They are also living lives and must not be trampled on at will.

Modern Fairytale
wesseldj-485816 June 2020
This was a fun movie to watch and while I admit I went into the movie to see Liu Yifei performance (and she was stunning!) but I stayed and was impressed by the acting of the entire cast.

The movies starts out as goofy and had a satirical tone, which brought quite a few good laughs. It was a good mix of romance and comedy.

The second part of the movie you can see the costumes and production went up a notch and they had a good sense of world building. As If the backdrop of Shanghai city wasn't impressive enough, they created a whole parallel twilight world alongside with it. While the later half of the movie was more of a darker tone, but they still kept a great sense of humor even during some dramatic scenes.

The CGI that was used blended in quite well, and worked to create the fairy tale like world. At times I thought I was watching a Live action remake of some anime serie. I was pleasantly entertained, came to watch Liu Yifei, but stayed for the movie!
