Nawazuddin Siddiqui's acting rescues the poorly written dim political biopic.
manthanj-9242727 January 2019
Director: Abhijit Panse Producer and Writer: Sanjay Raut, MP (Rajya Sabha) Shiv Sena

Story: Thackrey revolves around the life of late Bal Keshav Thackrey, as he goes from being a cartoonist to founding a political party, Shivsena for the Maharashtrians and how he became the most influential person of Maharashtra.

Review: Thackrey movie shows the famous and not so popular life incidences of the Bala Saheb Thackrey, going through the crucial moments which made him, one of the most influential people ever born in the state of Maharashtra.

However, the movie fails at capturing the attention of the viewers and one will find it very hard to concentrate at the film throughout the 2 hours and 19 minutes. With a poorly written script, one finds it difficult to connect with the movies when movies go ahead showing the life of Bala Saheb Thackrey.

It is more like different new pieces reporting the incidence rather than being a movie.

If you are looking for a nicely written script with amazing shots, the movie is not for you.

One must only go if you would want to know about the life of Bala Saheb Thackrey.

Verdict: 2/5

Opportunity missed.. could have been better!!
sanjubhat26 January 2019
Had high expectations from this film considering the charismatic persona of the protagonist . The narrative unfortunately is not gripping enough to hold the audience in rapt attention .

The film has its moments but seems disjointed, with punch lines that are laboriously inserted without having any impact on the narrative.

Navaz fits the bill perfectly and gets into the character with ease . But as they say no one can rise above the script . Could have been better .

5 out of 10 stars from me for this biographical docudrama.

Nawazuddin Siddiqui makes it worth watching
sourya-mukherjee27 January 2019
Nawazuddin Siddiqui pulls of one of the best performances of his career. He's fabulous! His body language, composure, magnetism & mannerism is at a different level all together. We don't come across actors like him often. If nothing else, watch the movie just for him.

Overall, depending on your political inclination, the values you carry, the principles you have, you may hate or like the film, as it is based on a political personality and the choices he makes. Personally, I must admit that the 150 mins did alter my opinion about Balasaheb Thackerey. That by itself shows that the film & the performance of its casts is good enough to have an impact (good or bad) on your opinion about the protagonist.

However, the film is very slow & if you can't read Hindi you might find it difficult to keep up. Dialogues at times are great but most often very confusing.

Bottom line is, if you are looking for a typical bollywood entertainer, you might like to skip this one. Else it is a good watch!

Feels quite empty, had expected much more based on trailer
TraditionalManager26 January 2019
6/10 - Coming back after seeing this biopic of the larger-than-life Marathi politician, I am quite disappointed at how they have not done justice to this movie.

Acting: First of all, Nawazuddin is the only major role in this film and others remain bystanders throughout the movie. Nawaz is probably one of the better actors in today's era and he proves it with another great performance. However, he seems uncomfortable with Marathi and falls short at the fiery roar that Balasaheb possessed. For example, when I saw Sanju, I didn't realize that it was not Sanjay Dutt acting. Such actor-character sync was missing.

Yet, he was perhaps the best choice for this complex role (but would've preferred Nana Patekar or Manoj Bajpai if they were younger). Amrita Rao, while being the other major character, is non-existent and missable.

Screenplay: The story, while doing a good job of taking us through Thackeray's life, did feel over the top at times (Remember that this movie was produced by Sanjay Raut, who is a part of the Shiv Sena so it excessively glorifies the character). I also hated the fact that the first half is in black&white. I mean, what's the point?

However, it was really interesting to see some politically-unrelated moments of Balasaheb's life that I wasn't aware of. Some dialogues are pearls.

Direction: This was the biggest let down for me. Abhijit Panse, who had previously made his debut with Rege (2014) - an absolute gem of a movie - seemed sloppy in his second (though I am not sure how much he could control things). It appeared as if he let Nawaz get away at times, but could've aimed at perfection.

He also tries to tell too many things in 2 hours. I would've preferred less things but in more detail.

Music: While there are no songs in this movie, background effects were really good and gave me goosebumps many times, inspiring me to pay attention to every scene.

Editing: Like I mentioned, there are too many scenes, and the movie seems very fast. They should've fixed it.

All in all, worth a watch, but don't have high hopes like Sanju or Bhaag Milkha Bhaag. 6/10 stars.

Great performance by Nawazuddin, Script well written but doesn't detail criminal deeds of Thackeray
mugen-is-here4 February 2019
Let me add my review for the first thing that everyone else is criticizing:

SCRIPT: The script was well written. It is a heavy and serious movie because the topic itself is a heavy one. The dialogues are strong and punchy. No scenes are shown with over-emotion or too much focus. For example, if there's a blast happening then the blast is shown in slow motion and the story moves on. This is a very unique and great way of showing stories!

ACTING: Nawazuddin has carried this role fantastically! He stands with poise, he delivers dialogues coolly, and the best aspects I liked were his pauses. Nawazuddin has this way of carrying out pauses naturally and his natural cool persona suits the script very well. Great job done!

CAMERA SHOTS/SCENES: The movie is quite visually pleasing. The first half was shot in black and white while the second half was in color. The sets were beautifully created and it takes you to a different era successfully.

THE MAIN CHARACTER: This is the part where I didn't like the film. Whenever Thackeray commits an atrocity, it is shown in just a single scene. There have been thousands brutally murdered by him and that is shown in a flash.

Marathis deserve respect, as does any other race or religion. No race should be made fun of in the common media. According to this movie, Marathis weren't respected because they weren't doing much more than setting up tea stalls while "outsiders" were creating companies, and doing a lot of big work. This led to a bunch of jokes on Marathis.

Bal took this to heart and tried to get Marathis the respect that they deserve - by killing off other religions and races. He polarized the whole mass of Marathas against "outsiders". Although he verbally says "I have my nation first and my Maharashtra second" his actions show the exact opposite.

In the process of murdering people who were just doing their jobs and forcing them to create reservation for Marathis, in the process of using his goons to kill off other religions, to force them to celebrate Marathi festivals, Bal Thackeray became the very monster that he started the fight with. In his process of "winning respect for Marathas", he crumpled over several fundamental rights of several other races.

The only reason that I wouldn't give this movie a 10 star, is because it portrays Thackeray in a neutral aspect rather than monster that he was. Even today, the the racial divide that he did in Maharashtra still polarizes the masses and non-Marathas face disrespect, harassment and bullying in their day-to-day lives.

Don't expect to learn anything from the film but surely hope for a fun time!
Tejas_Vinda_AITS25 January 2019
A stellar performance by the stalwart Nawazuddin Siddiqui, some very good crowd-pleasing dialogues & a fascinating emotion of knowing more about the man - Balasaheb Thackeray.

Because of its excessive political infusion, the pace gets down at places, lack of masala dialogues, it's not entirely for its target audience.

Watch it for the entertainment! The informative aspect of the film somewhere gets overshadowed because of its treatment.

Sanjay Raut's story is definitely engaging and provides ample entertainment to audience.

Nawazuddin Siddiqui is getting into the zone of being other people with ease. After Manto, he has hit another home run with Thackeray as far as his performance is concerned.

Amrita Rao as Meena Tai is impressive. She has a limited scope but surely makes you remember her character.

Thackeray is an interesting journey of a person larger than life portrayed in a very entertaining way. Nawazuddin Siddiqui's superlative performance will be remembered as one of his best.

Disappointing
bkvora26 January 2019
The Political views of Bal Thackeray are not conveyed clearly. The film also appeared like a documentary with the first half in Black and White. None of the characters other than Nawazuddin are developed. Nawazuddin shines above all including the poor script and Direction

Altered reality at places - apart from that a good film.
MuviFan7327 January 2019
When we talk of Sanju, we say it to be deviated a lot from reality but a good film, Thackeray is not that deviated but somewhat, it surely is. As a movie it is nice.

When we talk about the politics followed by him, the question arises was it right? There was a time when I use to think for our people if it has to be this way than let it be. Today I feel rather than doing that I would retract myself. The one who came below the car brought tears to my eyes. A better way is given in the movie Mee Shivaji Raje Bhosale boltoye.

Another question raised is to choose between Democracy and Dictatorship. Well I watched a show dance plus even if every member put up to a total the leader can still change it.

Tone, Script & Story: It portrays a biopic of Bala Saheb Thackeray. Direction, Screenplay, Cinematography: Justified. Music: Average. Acting: Good (specially nawaaz).

Final Verdict: Bala Saheb carries an Aura, I myself love to be in that aura, and well did the movie make me feel it? Somewhat: Yes.

Poor Direction in the End of the Film

Warning: Spoilers
***SPOILER IS IN BOLD***

The film was supposed to be an excellent one...the direction was good throughout the film...but poor direction in the end (NO...A 2ND INSTALLMENT FOR A BIOPIC IS REALLY NOT NEEDED) makes it a mediocre film...Nawazuddin's performance is brilliant, as always.

biopic which isnt sanitized
beevenkat2 February 2019
Thank u, rajkumar hirani, for not directing #Thackeray. Thank u, abhijit panse, for creating a biopic which isnt sanitized. There r many interesting scenes in the film - how south indians n gujjus have taken over bombay - how a hindi film is removed to make way for a marathi film - how the minority community cant be trusted - how indira gandhi supported him initially - how his men were responsible for the babri masjid demolition. Nawazuddin is perfect, so is the supporting cast. Worth watching. Rating 3/5.

Your Political Views Will Affect Your Liking Of This Movie
anupapu827 January 2019
Warning: Spoilers
THACKERAY - Its inevitable. U just cant escape your own viewpoints on the actions Thackeray took in his life and enjoy this movie as just a movie. This movie was offensive , big time , at least for me. The movie just keep on justifying his actions and sugarcoating it. It makes u unstable.

For example in the beginning it was showed that People from other state were taking jobs in Maharashtra because of which locals from the state were left unemployed. But the movie never shows a single scene where a Local is more qualified(even equally qualified) then a person from other state and still that other person got the job and not the local. In fact it was indicated that, that was the exact reason for Local persons not getting job. There lack of literacy. Also in the second half the character of Thackrey clearly says that we have to educate ours brothers for them to get job. See i personally have zero knowledge about the political and social situation of Maharashtra in 60s and 70s , rather i am just saying everything on the basis of what the movie was showing.

Even after so much sugarcoating the movie never , i mean not a single time convinced me to like the character of Thackrey for his actions. He has been represented as Hitler, blamed for his dictator, even shown as someone against a democracy. How can u show a person in those lights and try to justify his actions.

Now enough about political viewpoints. If i put that aside and talk about it as just a movie. Yes the movie gives you some historical knowledge . Thats one of the good things about the movie. But many of them were hurried and sometimes incomplete. And the time jump sometimes feels like instead of getting the whole year of History Lessons you are just getting the mention of events in a Crash Coarse without knowing the internal happenings of those events.

The screenplay never rise to the extent of a movie like SARKAR. In fact i think Ram Gopal Verma could have made this movie better. He would have maintained the seriousness in the film. Instead we get to listen punchlines from Bal Thackrey in this film like - "DHANGO MEIN MERA HAATH NAHI PAON THA"

The acting is good all the way. Nawaz did a fine job. Although i found his character from this film a little smiler to his character from MANTO.

its was nice to see Amrita Rao after so many years.

For direction i would sad it was average. It was not a tightly made film.

It was lengthy too. 2hr and 18mins without any songs.

They already mentioned "To Be Continued" in the end , so there will be a sequel. I think if they have showed even lesser events in this first installment , it would have been better. Also with a better director.

There were claps after the movie finished in my theater. Not much , i guess two or three people clapped. So there is surely some audience for whom this could be a great movie. For me it was somewhere between above average and good.

6.9/10

Political Lies for convenience
jovez1029 May 2019
Well well, Thackeray was against south Indians only and not 'other' Indians particularly north Indians?! This movie is a political tool. Just because sena and the BJP are in alliance, it is depicted that mr thackeray was all okay with north Indians. Gimmicky lies. Avoid.

In spite of Nawazuddin giving one of his finest performance in Thackeray, it is difficult to celebrate the film.
binducherungath28 January 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Thackeray, by Abhijit Panse, is a biopic on Bal Keshav Thackeray, popularly known as Balasaheb, the founder of Shiv Sena. The challenge in reviewing such a biopic film is that how to articulate and write about a film where the titular character's many acts are not in the interest of the mankind. It turns out to be so difficult to appreciate the rabble-rousing politician portrayed on screen. How to appreciate the character who had a controversial life ? He had no qualms in choosing violence, indulging in hate-speech, fighting for the rights of Marathis but demonization of other communities etc. One of the strange parts of the film is that Nawazuddin is chosen for the lead character, who ends up promoting Hindutva and talking against certain communities especially Muslims. One is certainly able to see the transformation of a cartoonist to a ferocious leader through the film and there is every probability of its sequel too. The film is disturbing due to many dialogues and the way Thackeray's life and decisions are justified. There are many instances where the leader is looking at mass turning violent and still not apologetic about the same. So, one is forced to think, how to support a leader who promoted communalism and just rationalized every act. He projects that he believes in the unity of the nation first and then Maharashtra by saying : Jai Hind, Jai Maharashtra. This is the inner conflict as a critic how to even rate and review the film which is not in favour of the mankind. But then, the film has to be taken as a piece of art.

Now, looking at the film as simply a piece of art, Nawazuddin breathes life so effortlessly into the lead character Thackeray. Nawazuddin does not imitate every mannerism / voice of Balasaheb, but he projects the very essence of the character so brilliantly on screen.

The film begins with Thackeray being interrogated in court for the charges against him in being instrumental for Babri Masjid demolition and his hate speech. The flash back scenes are interspersed along with the interrogation process and Thackeray's rational statements for every situation. Thackeray's sense of humour is also captured well. Thackeray is shown to be working on his own terms even when he is employed as a cartoonist with Free Press Journal. He chooses to resign his job than to succumb to the political pressures. Then he decides to start up his own weekly newspaper - Marmik. His father's goodwill in the market ensures him the loan to begin with this journey. Thackeray is shown to be very shrewd and blunt from the very beginning. Thackeray grows from there to a very influential position where he was able to win people over on his sides. He first worked for the rights of Marathis. He was adamant about calling Bombay as Mumbai even before 1995. He went to extremes to achieve the power. He neither bothers about his people picking up weapons against other people nor digging up and ruining the cricket pitch ahead of an India-Pakistan match. He himself protests from the front on many occasions. He does not hesitate to express his extremist views. At the same time, there are certain scenes in the film, where he is shown to be liberal as well in his viewpoints. Certain dialogues like "Pungi bajao lungi bhagao" are disturbing. But the film propels ahead glorifying the acts of Balasaheb and his ways of politics.

His wife Meena's role is essayed by Amrita Rao. The film does not explore much on his personal front except a few scenes at home, with his father as well as with Meenatai, who is shown to be a silent but strong support system of his life. Various leaders viz. Morarji Desai, George Fernandez, India Gandhi, Sharad Pawar are also seen in certain scenes to reflect upon the political scenario as well as certain major decisions of those times.

As far as the cast is concerned, Nawazuddin seems to be the perfect choice for the Balasaheb's role. Even without mimicking Balasaheb, he could project the character so incredibly on screen. Amrita as Meenatai is also good. Rest of the characters are also ok.

In spite of Nawazuddin giving one of his finest performance in Thackeray, it is difficult to celebrate the film since it relishes the provocative politics displayed by Balasaheb. The film has its elements in place to convey that the transformation of Bal Keshav Thackeray from a cartoonist to the tyrant Balasaheb was need of the hour. It is indeed difficult to appreciate the rabble-rousing politician portrayed on screen but kudos to Nawazuddin for playing this character with finesse.

Not a movie....really
tan9925 January 2019
This is a documentary. A badly made one at that. Probay best described as a montage of the greatest hits of the anecdotes of Thackeray's life. Scenes flow randomly from one to the other in an attempt to cover as much ground in anecdotes as possible. Even fans of the man will find this painful to watch.

BALASAHEB ROARS AGAIN IN THIS WELL MADE FILM
SAMTHEBESTEST25 January 2019
THACKERAY REVIEW :-

Biopics are raining like anything nowdays, anyone is coming up with Biopics without wasting time. Another film joins the party, this time quite roaring and controversial personality. I personally didn't have much expectations and may be that thing has worked here as Thackeray surpassed my Expectations and left me with satisfied experience. For me, It is Surprisingly good and Engaging film.

Thackeray is a well known story to all of us, because it is based on Bal Keshav Thackeray who had been a famous political leader of Maharashtra. Film Thackeray tells the story of Balasaheb Thackeray from his early days when he beared all the injustice and then decided to fight for his people. The tale is bounded by Taut Screenplay and Perfect Directorial Skills. Couple of mistakes in the begining but after that nothing really goes bad. Thackeray is almost a Songless film expectedly, but one situational song is there to boost the screenplay. Nawazuddin as Balasaheb Thackeray does full justice to the role, he wears the character with the ease. Strong Characterisation and Excellent get up of all cast members is the Biggest USP of the Film.

Thackeray had some sensitive and contriversial scenes which could have been explored more deeper but it is still okay not to disturb the built tempo. Unexpectedly Abhijeet Panse delivers a well made biopic where i can say Balasaheb Finally Roars on Big Screen in a Well Made film. Watch it to witness Balasaheb's Power and aura in his own style, and if you think its not enough then brace yourselves, the sequel is Coming...

keydeeeee141225 January 2019
Most of the movie stays in BW format before the interval. The movie fails to create any justification with the titular character. The storyline deviates from the actual plot without a moral. Lack of songs and single Background Score also brings down an entire movie. Although the dialogues and screenplay was commendable. Actor Nawazuddin gives one of the career best performace on the celluloid. Amrita Rao fails to make her cameback. Direction was also above average and some parts were applaudable.

Dastaan0072 August 2019
This story was put together very well. It seemed that the budget was run out, the ending was pretty bad without a clue how further. Perhaps they think about making a sequel. That would make more sense. Yet take the ending out, the rest of the story is fine.
