Arriving on Prime Video today, "The Idea of You" (read our review) stars Anne Hathaway as Soléne, a 40-year old art gallery curator who finds herself in a surprising, romantic meet-cute with Hayes Campbell (Nicholas Galitzine), a 24-year old who just so happens to be part of the famous (fictional) boy band called August Moon. But can their blossoming romance survive the hellish landscape of public judgment and media scrutiny that comes with life in the celebrity limelight?
"The Idea of You" (watch the trailer) is based on the best-selling romance novel of the same name by Robinne Lee, which many believe to be inspired by chart-topping singer Harry Styles, once a member of the boy band One Direction, and his well-documented romantic encounters with older women. Despite their rom com-heavy résumés, Anne Hathaway and actor-turned-director Michael Showalter had never met prior to collaborating on the May-December love story “The Idea of You,” which bows May 2 on Amazon Prime Video. Unless you count that one time at Beverly Hills’ Gucci Osteria, which in 2022 was the site of a dinner party to celebrate Jessica Chastain’s Oscar nomination for the Showalter-directed film “The Eyes of Tammy Faye.”
“I wanted to talk to Anne, but I was too embarrassed,” Showalter recalls of the soiree. “The path of least resistance is to just not talk to anybody.” Adds Hathaway with a chuckle: “I couldn’t figure out how to breach my wall of shyness.”
Months later, Hathaway conquered her timidity when she recruited Showalter to co-write and direct “The Idea of You,” in which the star of “The Devil Wears Prada” and “The Princess Diaries” portrays a 40-year-old single mother...

Bazinga again! “The Big Bang Theory” stars Jim Parsons and Mayim Bialik will guest star on the series finale of CBS’ “Young Sheldon,” reuniting as Sheldon Cooper and Amy Farrah Fowler. Details of the episode, which airs Thursday, May 16, and how Parsons and Bialik will be incorporated into it, remains a secret.
Parsons, of course, has been a part of “Young Sheldon” from the beginning, serving as the show’s narrator and as one of its executive producers. Bialik has also been heard on two episodes of “Young Sheldon” as a guest voiceover. But this reps the first time the duo has been on screen together since the May 2019 series finale of “The Big Bang Theory,” and it also marks the first on-camera appearance of their characters — as grown-up Sheldon and Amy.

Melissa Moore’s autobiography Shattered Silence inspired the podcast Happy Face, and now the podcast is getting a Paramount+ streaming series adaptation! Annaleigh Ashford – whose credits include B Positive, American Crime Story, and Masters of Sex – has signed on to star in the series, with Michael Showalter on board to direct the first episode.
I mainly know Showalter from an actor in projects like The State and Wet Hot American Summer, but his TV directing credits include episodes of Search Party, Love, Grace and Frankie, In the Dark, The Shrink Next Door, The Dropout, and I Love That for You. He has also directed the feature films Spoiler Alert, The Eyes of Tammy Faye, The Lovebirds, The Big Sick; Hello, My Name Is Doris; and The Baxter.
Happy Face will see Ashford taking on the role of Melissa, who at age 15, discovered that her beloved father was the prolific serial killer known as “Happy Face.

GLAAD has released the 11th installment of its Studio Responsibility Index, an annual study that tracks “the quantity, quality and diversity” of LGBTQ characters in films released in a calendar year by 10 Hollywood distributors.
The results found that of 350 titles released in 2022, 100 films, or 28.5 percent, featured an LGBTQ character, marking the highest number recorded in the time GLAAD has conducted the study. It should be noted, however, that in today’s peak content landscape, the number of films tracked has also increased, per GLAAD.
In those 100 films, there were 292 LGBTQ characters including 117, or 40 percent, characters of color. Of the 292, 163 were men, 119 women and 10 nonbinary. Seven of the women characters and six of the men were transgender. The showings marked a record number of nonbinary characters. Also a record: 12 of 350 films included a transgender character. Eleven LGBTQ characters were counted with a disability, also a high.

The Big Bang Theory has only been off the air for four years thus far, but after 12 seasons it’s hard to imagine the cast as anything other than the beloved characters they played for over a decade. While some actors have chosen to take it easy in the years since Bbt ended, others have gone full-speed ahead into roles that are wildly different from the characters we know them as.
Across film and television, here are the Big Bang Theory cast’s best post-Big Bang roles.
Johnny Galecki – The Conners
Johnny Galecki hasn’t done much since The Big Bang Theory ended, but having a child a few months before a global pandemic changes the world as we know it is as good an excuse as any. Peacock continues to expand its growing library of films with “Knock at the Cabin,” which will stream exclusively on the NBC platform starting March 24.
The M. Night Shyamalan thriller, starring Dave Bautista, Jonathan Groff, Ben Aldridge and Rupert Grint, follows three family members who are camping in the woods and are suddenly interrupted by four strangers with visions of an impending apocalypse. The only way to prevent the end of the world, they claim, is to have the family willingly kill one of their own.
The movie collected $14.2 million in its opening weekend in February, enough to top box office charts and dethrone “Avatar: The Way of Water.” It also landed a promising “A-” CinemaScore from ticket buyers.
However, Shyamalan’s new horror thriller wasn’t as much of a hit with critics.

At the 2023 Screen Actors Guild Awards Sunday, Sally Field was given the acting union’s highest honor: the Life Achievement Award, recognizing “career achievement and humanitarian accomplishment.”
The award was presented to her by her The Amazing Spider-Man co-star Andrew Garfield, who remarked “you evoke awe in every actor’s heart” in his introduction, speaking to Field. “You never drink the Kool-Aid of your own brilliance,” Garfield said. He spoke about Field leading the way for actresses in a misogynistic industry, fighting for women’s and Lgbtqia+ rights. “Sally, you show us how to live a life devoted to art, love and service,” he concluded.
In her acceptance speech, Field remarked: “In the fall of 1964, I was standing in front of a camera on a freezing cold beach in Malibu, and I said my first lines of dialogue as a professional actor,” in Gidget. “I first found a stage when I was 12 years old,...

For better or worse, the past 25 years of horror movies have been massively affected by the work of M. Night Shyamalan. Films like The Sixth Sense and Signs led many to hail the director as a modern-day Alfred Hitchcock. But Shyamalan’s 2023 film, Knock at the Cabin, features something rarely seen in a mainstream horror film: a married gay couple.

At the heart of M. Night Shyamalan’s new thriller “Knock at the Cabin” there is a disturbing question that has only two terrible answers. Unfortunately, the answers aren’t just terrible for the characters, they’re terrible for the audience as well. Because whichever direction this film goes in it’s running headlong into a brick wall, with no brakes.

February is looking to be at least slightly better than January, in terms of new movies, if only because we’re getting a number of sequels to previous hits. This weekend we get two non-sequels, one from a popular genre filmmaker, the other an odd true-story comedy based around the biggest sports event of the year. Read on for Gold Derby’s box office preview.
The biggest new release of the weekend is M. Night Shyamalan’s thriller “Knock at the Cabin,” based on Paul Tremblay’s book “The Cabin at the End of the World,” and starring Dave Bautista, Rupert Grint, Jonathan Groff and Ben Aldridge, who recently co-starred in “Spoiler Alert.” The premise revolves around a small family of three vacationing in a cabin when a group of armed strangers show up with a proposition that could prevent Armageddon.

Welcome to this week’s “Just for Variety.”
It’s not every day that an action movie stars an 80-year- old. But leave it to octogenarian Harrison Ford to return as Indiana Jones in “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny,” the fifth installment of the iconic franchise.
While moviegoers may be surprised to see Ford return four decades after making the first film, the actor has long felt he’d be back. “I always wanted to do it,” he told me at the premiere of his Apple TV+ comedy series “Shrinking.” “I wanted to do the rest of the story to see the end of his career.”
But even Ford has his limits. He insists he’s hung up Indy’s fedora and bullwhip for good: “It’s the last time for me.”

2022 was something of a landmark year for mainstream queer cinema. Films like "Fire Island," "Crush," and "Anything's Possible" painted a far more authentic and inclusive mosaic of the 2Slgbtq+ community than the movies with mostly white cisgender casts -- many of which, as moving as they are, feature straight actors playing queer characters -- that have come before them, while at the same time broadening their focus beyond the typical queer issues and "tragic" stories Hollywood typically fixates on. Of course, there's always going to be room for fresh stories centered on plain ol' white queer guys, and 2022 had us covered there too, with romantic dramedies like "Bros" and "Spoiler Alert."
The latter movie, which flew under a lot of people's radars judging by the box office returns, is based on Michael Ausiello's 2017 memoir "Spoiler Alert: The Hero Dies" and explores the real-life romance between its author (played by...

Welcome to this week’s “Just for Variety.”
If anyone was holding out hope that Alejandro González Iñárritu would change his mind about directing a superhero movie, I don’t have good news for ya.
The Oscar-winning filmmaker doubled down on his dislike of the tentpole genre when I caught up with him at the recent BAFTA Tea Party in Beverly Hills. Calling superheroes “sad figures,” Iñárritu said, “I see heroes every day. I see beautiful people really going through very difficult situations and doing incredible things. And that is the people that I kind of connect with. But these kinds of superpower heroes, really do we need that?”
He continued, “If you need that, is there something missing … instead of admiring what we have, the possibilities that we have?”
Iñárritu first made headlines for blasting superhero movies back in 2014, when he called such films “cultural genocide.” The comment came...

The casting branch of the academy is a year shy of a decade old and still doesn’t have an Oscar category of its own. However, the Casting Society has been handing out the Artios Awards for 37 years (“Artios” is from the ancient Greek meaning “perfectly fitted.”).
Nominees for feature films were announced on January 10 (two days before Oscar nominations voting begins). Many of the leading Academy Awards contenders reaped bids across the various categories according to production cost. Winners will be revealed at a ceremony on March 9 (two days after the close of final Oscar voting).
Last year’s big budget winners were the comedy “Borat Subsequent Moviefilm” and the drama “The Trial of the Chicago 7 ” while “The Forty-Year-Old Version” and “One Night in Miami” took the equivalent prizes in the independent division. “Minari” won the low budget and “The Surrogate” the micro budget prizes while “Soul” claimed the animation award.

The Casting Society of America’s annual Artios Awards, which recognize superior achievement in the casting of film, TV and theater projects, has announced the nominees for its film categories, which range from 200 million blockbusters to low-and-micro budget titles.
Anticipated Oscar darlings such as “Elvis,” “Tar,” “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” “The Fabelmans” and “Glass Onion” are present along with juggernauts “Avatar: The Way of Water,” “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” and “The Batman.” “Top Gun: Maverick” is strangely absent.
But the real surprises are the smaller titles that have gotten little awards attention in races so far such as “Bros,” “Emily the Criminal,” “Armageddon Time” and “Spoiler Alert,” along with streaming titles such as AppleTV+’s “Cha Cha Real Smooth” and “Causeway,” Netflix’s “Roald Dahl’s Matilda the Musical” and “White Noise,” and Amazon’s “Emergency” and “Catherine Called Birdy” among them.

How Awards Season Movies Break Out of the Celluloid Closet With More Stories About LGBTQ+ Characters
When non-binary actor August Winter read Sarah Polley’s “Women Talking,” they were really excited about the prospect of playing the transgender character Melvin, who finds his identity in a specific, unfamiliar environment — in this case, amid a Mennonite community fighting toxic masculinity. Like most characters in the film, Melvin was a survivor of sexual assault, and Winter responded to the integrity in which Polley navigated his trauma.
“His [gender] identity was always a part of him,” they explain. “Especially because he doesn’t speak for much of the film, it was important to me to capture that feeling of somebody finding who they are through an event, not because of it.”
In this awards season, films featuring or centering on LGBTQ+ characters portray them as fully realized, complex people.
To understand Melvin, Winter pondered the meaning of knowing one’s identity but not being ready to be out yet. “I...

James Cameron and Avatar: The Way of Water, the long-awaited sequel to Avatar (2009), debuted atop the box-office weekend with 134 million over its first three days in theaters.
While it is hard to say at this point exactly how much Avatar: The Way of Water will eventually make, it should make for interesting box-office watching over the next few weeks. The film finished 128.4 million ahead of the second-place film, Violent Night, which held onto second place with 5.6 million over the weekend to bring its three-week total to 35.5 million. Meanwhile, last weekend’s top film, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever managed 5.4 million over the last three days, dropping it to a third place finish this weekend. The Marvel film now boasts a six-week total of 419 million, so it’s not all bad. Similarly dropping a spot to finish in fourth place was Strange World with 2.2 million. This gives the film a four-week total of 33.8 million.

Focus Features’ tearjerker “Spoiler Alert” is now open nationwide, and audiences everywhere are driving Kleenex stock through the roof. Based on TVLine founder Michael Ausiello‘s 2017 memoir “Spoiler Alert: The Hero Dies,” the film is directed by Michael Showalter and it may or may not be the latest installment in the “Smurfs” movie series (you’ll have to watch it and decide for yourself). In all seriousness, “Spoiler Alert” details the ups and downs of Ausiello’s relationship with Kit Cowan, which tragically ends after Cowan passes away from neuroendocrine cancer.
“Spoiler Alert” reviews are pouring in at Rotten Tomatoes, where it currently has an 82 critics score and a 96 audience score. The acting duo of Jim Parsons and Ben Aldridge are receiving unanimous praise for their roles as Ausiello and Cowan, respectively, with Odie Henderson (Boston Globe) raving that the two male leads “have fantastic chemistry together.” Parsons is a...

Director-actor-writer-producer Michael Showalter’s career ranges from straight-up comedy such as “The State,” “Wet Hot American Summer” and “Search Party” to more nuanced projects including “Hello, My Name Is Doris,” “The Eyes of Tammy Faye” (for which Jessica Chastain won an Oscar) and “The Dropout” (Amanda Seyfried won an Emmy for that limited series). His latest film, “Spoiler Alert,” which was released Dec. 2. through Focus Features, is based on Michael Ausiello’s memoir and stars Jim Parsons and Ben Aldridge as a couple who face tragic illness and personal difficulties but persevere. Along the way, there are lots of Christmas decorations, Sally Field and even more Smurfs — which Ausiello collects.

It feels like in the pandemic era, Hollywood gives big blockbusters arguably too much breathing room to avoid another, smaller movie being walked all over. Just look at what happened with "The Batman" earlier this year, for example. That is currently happening right now, as virtually everyone is steering clear of James Cameron's "Avatar: The Way of Water," which washes up in theaters 13 years after the original's record-breaking run at the box office this weekend. But that comes at a cost, and that cost this past weekend was one of the worst weekends at the box office of the entire year. And folks, it was very bad. The only winner in the bunch was "Black Panther: Wakanda Forever," which took the top spot for the fifth week in a row.

For five weeks in a row, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever has managed to maintain its hold on the top spot of the box-office weekend.

At 37 million total, it can’t get much worse than this weekend. This year, it won’t: Thursday’s first shows for James Cameron’s “Avatar: The Way of Water” (Disney) should easily double that take. By the end of the weekend, it could top 200 million.
This was the second worst weekend of 2022 (by only a small margin over the end of January). We can’t blame the calendar: The same date last year took in 44 million. In 2019, it was 118 million.
With no new studio openings, the share compared to pre-Covid 2019 (with 20 percent lower ticket prices) is 31 percent. That year saw “Jumanji: The Next Level” open to 59 million, which disproves the idea that this date should be avoided.
Of course, one big reason to avoid this weekend is it’s immediately followed by “Avatar.” With studios making fewer movies, they’re loathe to put a big release’s second weekend against a blockbuster.

Darren Aronofsky’s “The Whale” broke A24’s own record for the year’s best per-theater average with 360,000 in six theaters, and a 60,000 PTA. “Everything Everywhere All at Once” previously held that record with a 50,130 PTA in 10 theaters.
New York and Los Angeles will remain the only locations until December 21. Some shows received the boost of talent appearances. There was a Saturday drop, but that stemmed from early-week revenue rolling into the Friday total.
Not everything A24 touches turns to gold: “Aftersun” and the wider “The Inspection” are still playing with grosses no longer reported. However, A24’s performance this year has been excellent even as it maintains long theater-exclusive windows for its top films.
Brendan Fraser’s likely awards contention has sparked the most interest for “The Whale,” with Aronofsky serving as his own draw. Unlike those predecessors, “The Whale” faced mixed reviews as well as the 2022 headwinds that impact specialized titles.
New York and Los Angeles will remain the only locations until December 21. Some shows received the boost of talent appearances. There was a Saturday drop, but that stemmed from early-week revenue rolling into the Friday total.

This weekend was never going to be a great one at the box office. In fact, the top five mostly remained the same from last weekend as no movie opened or expanded into more than 1,000 theaters.
Marvel Studios’ “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” became the third movie of 2022 to cross the 400 million mark on Friday, as it won a fifth weekend in a row with an estimated 11.1 million, down just 37 from last weekend. So far, “Wakanda Forever” has grossed 409.8 million in North America, making it the 36th highest-grossing, having passed the gross of 2016’s “Captain America: Civil War” with “Iron Man 3” and “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” in its sights, as well as “Wonder Woman,” since it should make a few million in the coming week.

Although not the worst weekend of the year (that honor still belongs to the weekend of January 28-30 when Spider-Man: No Way Home topped the box office for its seventh weekend with just 11 million and the top ten grossed just 30.7 million) this weekend came close to taking that honor with just 32.8 million combined gross for the top ten.
The good news is that Black Panther: Wakanda Forever has claimed the top spot for a fifth week in a row with an estimated 11.1 million. Unfortunately it doesn’t look like it will break the original film’s streak, which also stood at five weekends in first place, as there is no way it is going to be in first place next weekend!
Second place belongs to the new holiday classic Violent Night with an estimated weekend of 8.7 million (pretty close to what we predicted). That represents just a 35 drop which is...

A24 released Darren Aronofsky’s “The Whale” in six theaters in New York and Los Angeles this weekend and set a new per theater average record for the year, bringing in 60,000 per venue.
There have been few glimmers of hope for the struggling specialty box office, but indie distributor A24 served one up this weekend, reporting 360,000 in grosses for “The Whale,” giving it an average of 60,000. That tops the previous record of 50,000 set by fellow A24 release “Everything Everywhere All at Once” back in March.
As encouraging as this result is the fact that a 60,000 theater average is enough to set an annual record shows how much the specialty market has collapsed. In pre-pandemic years, record averages would regularly top 100,000. In 2019, the top per theater average belonged to eventual Best Picture Oscar winner “Parasite,” which opened in three theaters in October and averaged just over 131,000.

Numbers are beginning to roll in for this second week of December and they are slightly worse than expected. Black Panther: Wakanda Forever should easily take first with an estimated 11 million weekend based off a 2.8 million Friday. The film has surpassed the 400 million mark and is currently pacing 5 ahead of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness at the same time in their respective runs.
Second place belongs to Violent Night with an estimated 8 million weekend based off a 2.4 million Friday (off just 40 from its opening). That is a pretty good hold for this new Christmas classic
Third through fifth place look to be holdovers Strange World (3.6 million projected weekend); The Menu (2.8 million projected weekend) and Devotion (1.9 million projected weekend). Those all represent less than 30 drops per title.
On the limited release front, The Whale looks to have the best per theater average of 2022 with 360,000 made for the weekend on just 6 screens.
