Ángel Manuel Soto and Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer's "Blue Beetle" (check out our review here) may not have been a box office success, but the latest venture from DC Studios and one of the last films of the DC Cinematic Universe before James Gunn and Peter Safran revamp the studio is thankfully one of the most fun. Not to mention, it's also one of the rare instances where a superhero movie embraces cultural specificity, instead of just perpetuating the same ol' white stories over and over again. If you've yet to see the film, here's what to expect.
Jaime Reyes (Xolo Maridueña) is a recent college grad returning home and ready to take on the world, but a lot has changed over the last four years, and home looks quite a bit different. Thrust into a bit of a quarter-life crisis, Jaime searches for purpose when he comes across an ancient...

Spoilers for Blue Beetle. Consider yourself warned. While Blue Beetle may be more light-hearted than other superhero stories, that doesn’t mean that there can’t be some life-or-death stakes.
Related Box Office Predictions: Gran Turismo looking at soft opening
The death of a family member or close friend in order to motivate a superhero has been done again and again, but… it does work. While speaking with Collider, Blue Beetle director Ángel Manuel Soto said that the original plan was for “nobody” to die, but DC Studios pushed for an “emotional death.” Unfortunately, that meant that Reyes family patriarch Alberto (Damián Alcázar) had to die, but Soto and screenwriter Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer wanted his death to mean something more.
“‘How can we create the lowest of lows with the family member?” Soto said. “And how that low is not just another death in the superhero genre, but how that low...

While the new DC Universe won’t officially begin until the release of Superman: Legacy, James Gunn has already said that Blue Beetle is the first Dcu character. That came as a huge relief to director Ángel Manuel Soto, as he now has the reassurance that the character of Jaime Reyes (Xolo Maridueña) will continue and that all their work wasn’t in vain.
“Yeah, that was for sure one of the elements of relief. It’s the fact that all of this effort was not going to die during this regime change,” Ángel Manuel Soto told THR. “We survived regime changes throughout this whole process, and that was a testament to the hard work that everybody put into it. There’s also a belief in our characters, who are now going to be part of this new DC universe, especially Xolo’s character and his whole family and Bruna Marquezine’s character.

It's been a rough year for DC, but Warner Bros. is looking to turn it around with "Blue Beetle." Starring Xolo Maridueña ("Cobra Kai") as Jamie Reyes, this represents the character's first trip to the big screen in live-action. It also shouldn't be lost on anyone that this movie was originally supposed to go directly to HBO Max (now just called Max) but was given a theatrical release instead. The early buzz has been largely positive, and this could serve as a late summer surprise for moviegoers. For those venturing to theaters to see what DC has to offer, we're here to give you a little help by letting you know what, if any, credits scenes are attached to the film, and how that will impact your viewing experience.
To be crystal clear, this is a spoiler-free guide. Proceed without fear as we're not here to spoil anything at all.

We’re fully into the “Dog Days of Summer” now, and while “Barbenheimer” has been running rampant over the box office for months, it might be time for a few new movies to take over this weekend … maybe? Read on for Gold Derby’s box office preview.
After over a month in theaters, one expects that both “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer” might have to finally give up some screens — Christopher Nolan will hang onto most IMAX screens, thank you very much — and along comes two movies from the same studios that will try to avoid the legendary pitfalls of a mid-to-late August release.
Opening in 3,900 theaters is Warner Bros’ “Blue Beetle,” the studio’s third DC superhero movie of the year after “Shazam! The Fury of the Gods” and “The Flash,” this one based on possibly a lesser-known superhero. “Blue Beetle” is also the very first LatinX superhero to get a solo movie in theaters.

Did you ever meet someone who at first seems objectionable, but with time finds a place in your heart? That’s both the plot and the viewing experience for Red, White & Royal Blue, an Amazon production based on the well-loved novel of the same name by Casey McQuiston. In it, the son of the American president and an English prince begin as rivals but quickly fall in love and have to keep their relationship a secret for the sake of their respective countries.
Packed with national cliches, intermittently stunted dialogue, and an early cake-based bit of slapstick, you’d be forgiven for thinking this is going to be one excruciating ride. But somehow, Red, White & Royal Blue manages to be actually sort of sweet. This is a modern-set, yet ‘90s-styled and Bridgerton-lite, bit of wish fulfillment where beautiful rich people argue about privilege and entitlement and have tasteful and romantic sex.

As one of the last projects of the former Dceu, it remains to be seen what the future has in store for Blue Beetle, but James Gunn has said that while Superman: Legacy will be the first movie in the Dcu, Blue Beetle will be the first Dcu character. That would suit Xolo Maridueña just fine, as he told Entertainment Weekly that he wants “to do 12 more years of Blue Beetle.“
Xolo Maridueña added that he has spoken with James Gunn and Peter Safran about the future of Blue Beetle. “Yeah, I have had the chance to speak with them,” Maridueña said. “They’re really happy for our project and so excited for us to kick off what is to eventually become the next Dcu. The arrival of the latest DC superhero is nearly upon us, and he may make a bigger impression at the box office than we thought. Previous reports stated that Blue Beetle was tracking toward a $17 million opening at the domestic box office, but a new report has seen that number almost double.
According to Deadline, early tracking for Blue Beetle finds the DC movie eyeing a $30 million opening at the domestic box office. While that may not seem impressive for a superhero movie, especially after The Flash bombed with a $55 million opening, it’s important to remember that Blue Beetle has a significantly lower budget. The report states that the film is tracking very well with Latino and Hispanic audiences, who are eager to see DC’s first Latino superhero on the big screen.
With the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes still ongoing, that means that much of the talent behind...

“Heavens: The Boy and His Robot,” a Singapore-produced movie, will have its world and commercial premiere in Japanese cinemas this November. The film is Singapore’s first live-action feature film of the mecha genre, a genre of Japanese manga and anime that features or focuses on mechanical innovations such as robots and cyborgs.
The film is an action-adventure drama with offbeat humor, following the journey of a struggling young pilot, Kai, and his fighter mecha, Little Dragon. Set against a backdrop of epic galactic warfare, the movie explores Kai’s dream of joining the Mecha Corps to bring peace to a war-torn world and the unique friendship that develops between him and his mecha.
The film is very much the product of Rich Ho, who serves as producer, director, writer, film music composer, art director, set designer, director of photography and co-visual effects supervisor.

It’s almost time for Jaime Reyes to scuttle onto the silver screen in DC’s Blue Beetle! While promotional engagements for the film have their wings clipped because of the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, Fandango wants superhero fans to know that Blue Beetle tickets are available for pre-order!
Blue Beetle is DC’s second-to-last superhero film before James Gunn and Peter Safran reset aspects of the Dceu, ushering in a new era of superheroics and anticipated character debuts. Angel Manuel Soto’s Blue Beetle introduces Jaime Reyes, DC’s first solo superhero film with a Latino lead. Many DC fans have expressed excitement about the film, especially after the collected release of Blue Beetle: Graduation Day, a limited comic book series from writer Josh Trujillo and artist Adrian Gutierrez.
Here’s the official synopsis for Blue Beetle: Graduation Day via Penguin Random House:
Jaime Reyes has a lot to juggle.

Before the new DC Universe officially kicks off with Superman: Legacy, we still have two films that were developed under the old Dceu to go — Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom and Blue Beetle. The Aquaman sequel won’t be released until December, but Blue Beetle will be hitting theaters next month, and star Xolo Maridueña (Cobra Kai) told Total Film that it has gotten the seal of approval from James Gunn himself.
“I just remember James Gunn has this really excited energy to him all the time,” Xolo Maridueña said. “But them coming into this position of the movie already being made, and then being like, ‘All right [mimes rifling through a filing cabinet as if rummaging through the movie], let’s see what we have here’ – it was very rewarding for them to actually respond well to it and enjoy it. Jaime Reyes faces off against villain Conrad Carapax aka The Indestructible Man in the final trailer to “Blue Beetle,” released Tuesday.
Landing in theaters Aug. 18, “Cobra Kai” breakout and fan favorite Xolo Maridueña stars in the title role of Jaime Reyes in “Blue Beetle,” DC Studios’ first superhero movie centered on a Latino character.
Carapax is a humanoid-insectoid creature with a tough exoskeleton that gives him incredible strength and durability. Carapax has the ability to generate powerful energy blasts from his hands, which he uses to devastating effect in battle. He is also a skilled hand-to-hand combatant and strategist, making him a dangerous opponent for Jaime.
Previously, the film’s first trailer captured Reyes’ transformation from a daydreaming teenager to an unexpected hero with great responsibility. Maridueña previously described “Blue Beetle” as a combination of both a DC and Marvel superhero.

Season 5 of “The Crown” sets sail over some very troubled waters and makes no moves to avoid the rocks. Even folks whose knowledge of Princess Di begins and ends with the Beanie Baby know that her divorce from Charles is followed closely by her death in a car crash. But there’s a difference between dramatizing the royal family’s doldrums and succumbing to them.
A darkness hangs over the fifth season of “The Crown” visually, as Martin Childs’ production design leans into yellow and brown rooms, and the series’ team of cinematographers cast shadows that wouldn’t be out of place in the candle-lit “Victoria”, whether scenes take place in Windsor Palace or the middle of the Gulf of Naples. Actress and recording artist Becky G has joined DC’s upcoming “Blue Beetle” in a crucial role, she announced on her social media on Monday.
The singer is voicing the Scarab, an alien-created artificial intelligence that gives superpowers to Blue Beetle, played by “Cobra Kai” breakout and fan favorite Xolo Maridueña.
In the DC Comics, Scarab has been passed down through several of the heroes who have operated as Blue Beetle. Designed to bond symbiotically with its host, the Scarab can provide a wide range of abilities, including enhanced strength, durability, and energy projection. However, it also has a mind of its own and can sometimes take control of its host, leading to conflicts and challenges for the Blue Beetle.

It remains to be seen whether Blue Beetle will have a place in the new DC Universe, but star Xolo Maridueña is already prepared to return for a sequel.
While speaking with Empire, Xolo Maridueña said that Blue Beetle may not simply be a leftover of the Dceu, but that all depends on how the movie performs. “If we get one movie or a trilogy and fucking fold this into the Justice League shit, we’re ready for the whole nine,” Maridueña said. “For me and Angel [Manuel Soto, director] and the team, we kicked ass with this movie. The Beatles covered songs in numerous genres. However, The Beatles’ “My Bonnie” stands above the rest of their covers. Here’s a look at why.
The Beatles | Hulton Archive / Stringer The Beatles’ ‘My Bonnie’ makes a boring old song sound vivacious and fun
The Beatles covered songs by many great artists, including Little Richard, Chuck Berry, and Phil Spector. Sometimes they out their own distinctive stamp on their overs, and other times they faithfully recreated a great song. Regardless, most Beatles covers are tributes to musical geniuses.
On the other hand, “My Bonnie Lies Over the Ocean” is an old sea shanty that everyone knows but nobody seems to like. While some songs of that age have aged beautifully (e.g. “God Save the King”), “My Bonnie Lies Over the Ocean” is probably better left in the ashbin of history. The fact that The Beatles turned the tune into something...

Prince William and Kate Middleton have officially put King Charles III‘s coronation ceremony in the history books, and “what. a. day.” it was!
The Duke and Duchess of Wales’ social media account on Saturday posted a 1-minute behind-the-scenes video of the royal couple and their children getting ready to embark on the eventful day. The video, set to a regal soundtrack, begins with Princess Charlotte and Prince George emerging out of their royal residence ahead of William.
Charlotte appears awe-struck at what awaits the family outside the residence. Kate, looking elegant as ever in her royal garb, emerges last before they all hop into their waiting caravan to take them to their carriages. The video then transitions to the family along The King’s Procession, with a shot of Charles and Queen Camilla waving to the crowd from inside the Gold State Coach.

The long-awaited trailer for DC’s “Blue Beetle” movie is finally here, as an ancient artifact “the scarab,” takes hold of Jaime Reyes and transforms the teenager into a superhero.
The kicker is that Reyes’ “transformation” isn’t a solo affair as in most comic book origin stories, but he transforms into an armored superhero in front of his family, a Latino family nonetheless!
Upon his transformation, the suit thrusts Reyes into the atmosphere and the teenager soars into space within seconds while he ponders his fate. Watch the video above.

A singer has apologised for “butchering” the British national anthem at an England football match on Thursday evening.
Italian-American singer Ellynora had been asked to perform God Save the King before the kick-off of the European Championship qualifier match in Napoli.
However, she appeared to have trouble with the song, singing off-key, repeating the first line twice and fiddling with her earpiece.
Cameras caught the players catching each other’s eye in bemusement at the disaster and one TV pundit called the performance “a shambles” while fans watching on social media were quick to chime in, accusing her of “butchering” the anthem:

Since the early 1960s, the TV game show Jeopardy! has tested the knowledge of eager contestants willing to participate in a battle of the minds for generous cash prizes. The long-running program has become a mainstay of American culture, consistently rating among the most popular television shows. When long-time Jeopardy! host Alex Trebek died from stage 4 pancreatic cancer in November 2020, he left a big pair of shoes to fill. As the face of Jeopardy! since 1984, he hosted more than 8,200 episodes before his death.
Determined to keep the famous quiz show going, producers set out to find a replacement, testing out a long string of guest hosts. In July 2022, Jeopardy! champion Ken Jennings and “The Big Bang Theory” star Mayim Bialik were announced as replacement hosts, sharing duties throughout the season.
During one of Bialik’s recent hosting runs, the actor angered many UK fans when she allegedly accepted a wrong answer.

Andrew Lloyd Webber, the English composer who created the scores for blockbuster musicals such as “Cats,” “The Phantom of the Opera” and “Evita”, has written the anthem for King Charles III’s coronation, adapting a piece of church music that encourages singers to make a “joyful noise.”
The work by Webber is one of a dozen new pieces Charles commissioned for the grand occasion taking place May 6 at Westminster Abbey. It includes words adapted from Psalm 98 and is scored specifically for the abbey’s choir and organ.
“I hope my anthem reflects this joyful occasion,” Webber said in a statement distributed by Buckingham Palace.

King Charles III‘s youngest brother Prince Edward caused a stir when he and his wife Sophie, Countess of Wessex attended the Royal Variety Performance late last year. It was the first show since Queen Elizabeth II’s death and the Earl of Wessex as well as the countess were the royal family guests of honor for 2022 standing in for the king. But Edward made headlines for more than just his appearance. The prince had royal watchers buzzing when he did not sing the national anthem “God Save the King” as it played, which left social media asking if Edward was feuding with the king.
Now, a body language expert, who looked over the footage and photos, is giving their take on Edward’s “deliberate” choice not to sing while everyone else was.

King Charles III‘s former butler is speaking out. In an interview with Et’s Kevin Frazier, Grant Harrold, the new monarch’s former butler, reacted to the “strange” stories that have surfaced about the king in the wake of his mother, Queen Elizabeth II‘s, death.
“Somebody said to me, ‘Oh did you have to carry the loo toilet seat around?’ And I said, ‘What toilet seat?’ I’ve never heard of this,” Harrold said of one story he heard, before weighing in the rumoUr that Charles likes his shoelaces to be ironed.
“Why would you even iron shoe laces? It doesn’t even make sense,” he said. “… It’s completely made up and I don’t know where these comments come from. I don’t know why they’re saying them. I don’t know what they’re trying to achieve from it, because it’s just silly.

The Choir of Westminster Abbey had quite a moment in the spotlight during Monday’s state funeral service for Queen Elizabeth II, with one choir boy in particular capturing hearts across social media.
As the ensemble sang hymns and songs throughout the duration of the ceremony, viewers took note of a young singer with curly red hair who delivered a star-worthy performance filled with passion, movement and expression.
Dubbed by some as the “Mvp” of the funeral, the boy was praised for his earnest emotion — and Twitter just couldn’t get enough.

King Charles III is acclimating to new traditions as the reigning British monarch. One of those was on display at the funeral for his late mother, Queen Elizabeth II. During the Sept. 19 service at Westminster Abbey, members of the royal family—including Prince William, Prince Harry, Kate Middleton, Meghan Markle—and guests sang along to the British national anthem, "God Save the King," King Charles remained silent. This is because the song is one that has traditionally sang to the reigning monarch. The anthem was formally recognized as "God Save the Queen" throughout Queen Elizabeth II's 70 years on the throne. According to the royal family's website, the...

The period of silence was ended by a single chime of a bell from the highest-ranking military official in attendance, Senior Nco Robert Brockelsby Miller of the Irish Guards.
Singer Laura Wright performed the anthems, firstly of South Africa before God Save The King. Movingly, the Oval crowd joined in with the new anthem of Britain, followed by the applause which only ended when James Anderson delivered the first ball of the match.

Britain’s new king prepared to meet with the prime minister Friday and address a nation mourning Queen Elizabeth II, the only British monarch most of the world had known and a force of stability in a volatile age.
The country began a 10-day mourning period Friday, with bells tolling around Britain and 96-gun salutes in London – one for each year of the queen’s long life. People around the globe gathered at British embassies to pay homage to the queen, who died Thursday in Balmoral Castle in Scotland.
King Charles III, who spent much of his 73 years preparing for the role, takes the throne in an era of uncertainty for both his country and the monarchy itself. In Britain and across its former colonies, the widespread admiration for Elizabeth herself was sometimes mixed with criticism for the institution and the imperial history she represented.

In the hours immediately following the death of Queen Elizabeth II at Balmoral on Thursday (8 September), the crowds gathering outside of Buckingham Palace in London came together to sing both “God Save the Queen” for the late sovereign and “God Save the King” for her eldest son and successor, the former Prince of Wales, now known as King Charles III.
The latter phrasing will have been eerily unfamiliar to many, having not been sung on these shores since 1952 when the reign of Elizabeth’s father, George VI, came to an abrupt end.
The song was fist adopted as the UK and Commonwealth’s national anthem in September 1745 during the reign of George III, a year after its lyrics appeared in print for the first time in The Gentleman’s Magazine and its music was set down in ink in the pages of the Thesaurus Musicus anthology at a time when...
