Christmas Getaway
stuff-3189813 December 2018
Loved this movie and can watch it over and over. All three of the main characters were good but Travis Van Winkle carries this movie. It is some of the best acting I've seen in a hallmark movie. I also enjoy watching the mother character in Hallmark movies. She is a good actor as well.

The story is good and and keeps you interested. Not the typical Hallmark, girl in big city goes home to country hometown.

Love movies like these with more imagination.

straight forward Hallmark
SnoopyStyle25 July 2019
Emory Blake (Bridget Regan) is a workaholic travel writer. She is often away from her San Francisco home. When her boyfriend invites her to visit his family in Boston for Christmas, she turns him down and they break up. She is eager for her next work assignment doing a story on a cabin holiday in Pine Grove. She is shocked when Scott Hays (Travis Van Winkle) seems to have broke in and gives him a swift kick. The owner had double booked the rental. Scott is a widower with his daughter Katy and waiting for his mother Marilyn (Teryl Rothery) to arrive. Emory agrees to go home but her car breaks down and she's forced to stay. Alice Bennett is a parent to Katy's classmate Johnny.

It's a rather straight forward romance. There is a hint of a love triangle but Alice is never given enough screen time to be a bigger character. In the end, the path is singular and straight. There are no turns, no twists, and no surprises. There is a predictable misunderstanding and an easy resolution. It's a Hallmark movie.

I............Love it !
Lew77713 December 2018
I've seen a few Hallmark Christmas films and most have limited back-story and the dialogue is unrealistic. This film is an exception to the rule. The dialogue and chemistry between the actors is great and everyone does a good job. The Mum, Teryl Rothery is so accomplished and daughter Katy, played by Raven Stewart is adorable and cute as a button. Bridget Regan and Travis Van Winkle develop a growing attachment, though double-booked at a cottage in Pine Grove , there's an initial wariness. Bridget especially, as Travel Writer Emory Blake , displays wonderful small-town worldly charm - and is so NICE !! She's just great in this role and her scenes with Travis are believable and flow well. This is one of the better Christmas releases guys - so see it !

Who wouldn't want to share a cabin with Travis?
adamjohns-425758 December 2020
I do like this one, it reminds me of a story that I have written myself. A very cute guy meets a girl at a cabin in the snow. The only difference is that mine is two guys.

It has a whole list of activities for the season that make it a lovely and warm Christmas film and the romance element is cute too. There's also lots of snow and warm fires. What more could you ask for?

A beautiful festive getaway
TheLittleSongbird11 January 2022
Throughout my whole Christmas film completest quest undertaken since late 2019, an interesting quest but very mixed one, there was never the mentality of expecting a classic or the film in question to be flawless. Something that was never managed with Hallmark's output. There was however always the expectation of seeing a film where one can see at least some effort rather than merely cash-in level. One could see that with enough of Hallmark's output but not all.

'Christmas Getaway' is not a Christmas classic, but seeing it the amount of effort that went into it was more than evident throughout. Hallmark's Christmas output has been very variable, the best ones being surprisingly well done and the worst being terrible. 'Christmas Getaway' in many ways is towards being of their overall best, with most elements done remarkably well and only a few things done imperfectly which was not unexpected in a way.

It is a bit of a slow starter, where it takes a bit of time to get going. Was expecting much originality and the film is pretty formulaic as far as Christmas films go.

Also thought that Emory was a bit difficult to warm to at first, exaggerated negative character traits is a pet peeve of mine and something that Hallmark was guilty of a lot. The resolution agreed is a bit too easy and Alice Bennett is underused.

However, Bridget Regan is truly charming and easy to like and once Emory becomes easier to warm to (which is actually quite quickly) it is very easy to root for her and her goals. Travis Van Winkle matches her beautifully in the easy going charm department and never overoes it while never phoning in. Teryl Rothery had a knack for scene stealing. And she is a breath of fresh air delight whenever she appears. Child performances have varied so much in Christmas films, this is a example of an adorable and likeable child performance that is also remarkably mature.

Variable also in Christmas films has been the chemistry between the actors. The chemistry between the leads is very heart-warming, grows realistically and never comes over as forced. The romance never comes over as too heavy and endears, development is not too aimless and it doesn't feel rushed through.

Moreover, the production values still manage to be great, one of the best looking Hallmark festive films of that year. It's not too drab or garish in photography, the editing didn't seem rushed or disorganised and the scenery has a real charm to it. Most of the soundtrack is nostalgic and appealing to listen to, capturing the festive spirit well. Hallmark had a real habit of over-scoring their films but that's not as much the case here. The script just about avoids being corny and saccharine, both of which are common for Hallmark, and the story is mostly very engaging, easy to be uplifted by and heart-warming. Did like the characters too and they came over as more real than a lot of Hallmark Christmas films.

Concluding, really liked it on the whole. 7/10.

Thank you
Christmas-Reviewer4 January 2018
I HAVE REVIEWED OVER 400 ( C H R I S T M A S ) MOVIES AND SPECIALS.

PLEASE BEWARE OF SOME REVIEWERS THAT ONLY HAVE ONLY ONE REVIEW. WHEN ITS A POSITIVE THERE IS A GOOD CHANCE THEY WERE INVOLVED WITH THE PRODUCTION. NOW I HAVE NO AGENDA! I REVIEW MOVIES & SPECIALS AS A WAY TO KEEP TRACK OF WHAT I HAVE SEEN! I HAVE DISCOVERED MANY GEMS IN MY QUEST TO SEE AS MANY " C H R I S T M A S " MOVIES AS I CAN.

Someone keeps reporting my reviews. I guess they are jealous because I do tell the truth. I want to point out that I never make snide remarks about actors weight or real life sexual orientation. If there acting is terrible or limited "I talk about that". If a story is bad "I will mention that" So why am I being "picked on"? IMDB will not even tell me what someone found offensive. Well on to the review

In this film After a surprising breakup with her boyfriend, a travel writer decides to go on the picturesque Christmas vacation planned for the two of them, alone. Now she is hoping to spend the holiday relaxing, a travel writer takes a traditional Christmas vacation for the first time. Through a mix up on the rental site, she finds herself double-booked for the holidays with a widower, his young daughter and mom. What begins as an inconvenience blossoms into much more.

What is nice about this film is that they do not have a "Scrooge" type character. The little mini-love triangle doesn't really have some for you the viewer to hate but in reality "Care About". She is in fact putting herself out there. So I felt sorry for her. I was glad they made her a nice lady that pushes the man into the arms into a love rival.

Now this isn't the greatest Hallmark Movie of 2017 but it is very good.

My favorite Hallmark Christmas rom com
paulaasd1 January 2018
So a little honesty here, my least favorite part of Hallmark Christmas movies is the preachy attitude. That is what separates this movie from the rest. Instead the focus is on the characters who happen to be enjoying Christmas traditions together. The chemistry between the 2 appealing character leads, Emory and Scott is wonderful, and Scott's daughter and mother are also on mark. You just believe and like them, and the amusing dialogue is a step above the usual Hallmark movie. It's just a fun romantic comedy, and I hope Hallmark makes more of these movies in the future.

No exaggeration. Fantastic movie.
Harbinger_378126 December 2017
Warning: Spoilers
Moving away from the usual congrats and compliments, I'm going the details.

If memory serves, both Regan and Van Winkle were on The Last Ship. And individually - Van Winkle was on Bound & Babysitting with Tammin Sursok, and Regan was on Magic Stocking with Victor Webster. Both of 'em performed great chemistry with their co-stars, so the moment the cast was out, had a feeling these two would have great on-screen chemistry... And I was right.

This movie's fantastic, plenty of misty-eyed moments between the protagonists, and all of them looked natural and acting-unlike. Nice work with the Risgryngrot bit - at first it looks like Emory put too much effort into trying to find the almond, and as Element Fate would have it - no luck. Then in the end, after realising and confessing her true feelings to Scott and learned that he felt the same, strong way. When she tried again, Fate smiled on her true love - even if it's only a few days they were together.

I guess the only regret in this movie is that there's no "One Year Later" part where we see Emory and Scott truly get married... Still, this movie's awesome. Even as a TV movie it's very homey. I love it.

lovely. just lovely
Kirpianuscus16 December 2018
The reasons for define it as "lovely" are many and serious. First - for the plot who is real charming and smart. Srcond - for great performances - Alvin Sanders and Teryl Rothery are exactly the right "spices". And for the courage to be an old fashion sweet and deliccate film. Sure, the rules of genre are respected and it is just a Hallmae.

Snowed up for Christmas
Prismark1021 November 2018
Christmas Getaway has an easy charm with its light romance.

Emory Blake rents a log cabin over Christmas. She finds out that the cabin has been double booked by single dad Scott. He is staying there with his young daughter Katy and they will be joined later on by his mother.

As the weather has turned bad, they ask Emory to stay over until it gets better.

Emory tells Katy about all her travels around the world. Of course Scott realises that Emory might be the one for him since his wife died.

It is an Hallmark Christmas film, but it came across better than some of their output.

A Christmas Story with a script worth watching !
jpaulmdns7 January 2018
Far and away, the best of 2017 - not only does it have actors that mesh wonderfully together, the script is thoughtful and well written .... you'll get the usual expected ending, but the journey is worth watch, for a change !

Thoroughly Enjoyable
timmurphy-231 December 2017
The chemistry between the two stars is off the charts...its obvious that they know each other (both are co-stars in "The Last Ship") and seemed to genuinely like each other. This makes the movie better than some of the other offerings as the acting is natural. The storyline is somewhat standard but the setting is unique. The daughter is cute-not precocious-which also makes this movie better than some. Good acting and sweet story. Highly recommend.

Wow, worst of the lot.
nemman6326 December 2019
I saved this for last because of the great reviews here. Loaded it up Christmas Night for the final Christmas movie of the season, and.... turned it off after 15 minutes.

This was easily the worst movie of this kind I have ever watched.

The very first scene with the lead female character, with her over the top self centeredness and narcissism, talking about her important travels and amazing rituals she has learned - like whoever finds the walnut in their porridge will get married in a year (she tells it like it is some sacred thing, like baby Jesus being born in a manger). No one else can even speak, they are just there to pay rapt attention and adore her ever word.

Even though her seemingly nice BF is sitting right there beside her, watching her, she makes a big show of looking relieved that it wasn't her that got the almond. He notices and is obviously hurt, not that she cares.

He takes the hint and tells her being with his family for the holidays is important to him, and he would love for her to be there, but since she won't come he now understands she will not settle down with a traditional guy like him. She really doesn't have anything to say, just another breakup to tell her adoring friends about. YOLO!!!! And apparently she had no real reason she couldn't go with him to his family for Christmas, as the next scene she is planning her own fabulous Christmas adventure.

I really thought the movie was going to be him in the lead male role, and could see where he would be wounded and gun shy about trusting and opening himself up again, and her character was the stock horrible ex, but NOOOOO! Then we cut to the intro of the male lead who is getting out of his luxury sedan and a pretty woman runs up and holds an umbrella over his head while they walk and he talks about his important business stuff without so much as a thank you or personal remark to her. (He is as important and special as she is!) 2 of the most unlikable characters I have ever seen in a film as leads that I am supposed to care about.

I could care less if either of them find their happiness TBH.

I would not recommend this movie under any circumstances, unless I quit it too soon and they both die in a plane crash and the real leads then take center stage..

Best Hallmark Christmas movie I've watched
MsResponsible8 November 2020
My first Christmas movie review because I liked it so much that I've now watched it two years in a row. Love the story. Love the actors. Just enough corny moments. :-)

Highly recommend watching this if you're into Christmas movies. 100% Enjoyable!

speedcanary30 December 2017
I truly needed something to fill THE LAST SHIP void and this did the trick. Stars Regan and Van Winkle are easily the most versatile actors and it was a true joy seeing them on something lighter, whimsical and smart. Can I get more of this dynamic duo please????

One of Hallmark's best
RebeccaKeys8422 July 2019
This is easily one of the best Hallmark movies (not just Christmas movies) they've ever done. The plot was enjoyable and the acting and chemistry among all of the actors seemed effortless. Of all of the sequels Hallmark's made, I can't believe there isn't a sequel to this since they can go so many different directions with it -hopefully one is in the works.

Me and my family really enjoyed this movie. Just wish Hallmark wouldn't be so secretive about their soundtracks for these movies. Been trying to find out the name of the song played at the end without much luck.

Can't watch this enough
stephgil-728013 January 2018
I loved this movie. I have it on DVR and watch it everyday. The chemistry between the two actors is great. You would think they were involved in real life. And the gestures they make with their eyes, so believable. I hope Hallmark can put these two actors together in another movie. There is natural chemistry between them.

The BEST Hallmark movie of season 2017! 8 Stars!
huggibear24 December 2017
No joke, this movie was great! I loved every second of it and that's not an understatement. This movie rocks! I'm not giving anything away (no spoiler alerts here), other than it has got to be watched if you are sitting on the fence about what to do with your time. I don't believe you will be disappointed by watching this. It truly touches the heart on every level. Good job Hallmark and thank you for this one!

A Christmas Romcom that's well above average...
rossmcfarlen17 November 2018
A delightful set-up where strangers meet over a double-booked log cabin at a Christmas resort called Pine Grove - a widowed young father and his schoolgirl daughter (changing their annual routine) encounter a recently dumped travel writer who is "more transient than traditional", having had an unconventional upbringing abroad with her nomadic parents.

After she generously concedes the booking to father & child, they return the good deed by playing host to their uninvited guest when her car breaks down before a snow storm...thus unfolds this magical yarn where the young girl has a dreamy wishlist of all the Christmassy things she wants to do this year...with her father and their new friend.

So many films are made in this genre but rarely does everything hit the mark; but here the clever plot; the witty dialogue (without a streak of sentimentality or falseness); the gentle subplot with the young man's mother (with her own romance percolating in the background); and the two charismatic leads (possessing what's usually missing from these yuletide Romcoms: on-screen chemistry!) give heart warming and engaging performances. It's hard to imagine another pair in the roles, they're that good!

This movie will warm the cuckles of your heart with its charm, relaxed unforced humour, Christmas magic and I look forward to watching it again when the chance presents itself in future.

And of course I will recommend it, without hesitation, to others.
