But he's such a dweeb???
adamjohns-4257518 December 2020
I've just watched "Bridget Jones's Baby" and I can say that the same thing that annoyed me about that film is what annoys me with this one. If you've had nearly twenty years to pronounce your undying love for your best friend and done nothing about it, perhaps you aren't worthy of her anyway and should move aside to let the sexy snow man give her a good life, even if she isn't actually that nice a person and definitely not worthy of Jesse Hutch (Swoon). Because in real life, you would choose Jesse and a trip to Paris!

I'm probably only scoring this film so high, because Jesse takes his shirt off. It's not for the acting or the other two leads, or even for the supporting cast, although the Elk Jerky lady is fun, but some of the score might be for the story, which is at least a bit different if a bit silly.

It's quite interesting to note that the "leading man" (Not Jesse) only seems to have played the brother-in-law and such other supporting roles after this film. I'm not sure I would have given him this opportunity.

I think it would have made a nice change for the friends to realise that they are never going to work and to take risks on new people instead of the traditional falling in love in the final moments thing. Usually they would all get a happy ending, so why couldn't he have got together with Jerky Girl instead?

I'll watch it again, because The Hutch's sexy body never gets old!

Adam Cole bay-bay
southdavid7 January 2024
It's nearly Christmas, so the "How Did This Get Made" podcast has switched to Christmas themed films for a while, one of which was "Snowmance" an almost passable but rather dull Christmas themed romantic comedy, with a confusing central message.

Since being shunned by a local boy as an adolescent, Sarah (Ashley Newbrough) and her friend Nick (Adam Hurtig) have a tradition of making a snowman version of her ideal boyfriend every year. Nick has always secretly loved Sarah though, apart from a brief period in high school, they have never been together romantically. They create the snowman this Christmas, and the next day Cole (Jesse Hutch), the snowman transformed into a real human, knocks on the door and promises to whisk Sarah away from her life, a prospect that Nick doesn't like.

Certainly, for a film I've viewed for this podcast, "Snowmance" was an easy watch. The performances aren't bad and whilst there's nothing to write home about in the cinematography or direction, it's clearly quite a low budget film and there's nothing obviously wrong about it either. You can easily be washed along in the breezy relationship dramas and chirpy performances.

It's not expected to, but it doesn't really stand up to any scrutiny.

It appears quite early on that trying to explore the concept of a man made of frozen water coming to life is more than the light comedy is willing to deal with. So, he's travelled the world (presumably as part of the water cycle?) and gets too hot inside but also, somehow, seems to understand money and has the ability to buy tickets to France. The 'rules' of the film are never explained.

Also, despite how hard the film works to reframe it, it really did feel like the overall message was that Sarah should settle and give up on her dreams. The concept of being with Nick really doesn't seem to even occur to her until the last couple of scenes. We're also, as a society, less tolerant of men in unrequited love scenarios than we were, and at times Nick does feel, to me, like he's this sad incel incapable of moving on. There is no talk of him having any other failed relationships, only her.

Cole also keeps calling Nick "Little guy" even though Nick is a couple of inches taller than him. Also, what is the budget and guiding purpose of the magazine she writes for. Presumably It's to promote the twin cities to tourists, why and how would it afford a travel writer?

That said, watchable, light comedic stuff, provided you don't think about as much as I have, for some reason.

Another dud

5.1 stars.

The lead actress looks different. I've seen her in lots of stuff and she's a good actress, but in 'Snowmance' it's like this was her "before" she took acting classes, persona. She is NOT the same actress I've seen, almost like a twin sister filling in, expecting the audience to be unaware. I think she's pregnant while filming, there is obvious extra weight (you can see it in her face). I don't judge extra pounds, but whenever any actor gains obvious substantial weight, I do mention it. I figured the lead male was going to help carry this story, but his contribution was minimal. The secondary male should have been the lead. And why does he say he likes "that little guy"? First of all, he's smaller than "that little guy". The whole experience is slow, mundane, uninspired. I skipped to the end just to see if the movie has any possibilities of future viewings. First 15 minutes: 5.0 (painful). Last 15 minutes: 5.2 (lackluster).

could be so much better with different casting
linda-plant25 November 2019
Ashley Newbrough couldn't act her way out of a paper bag, yet she seems to get parts, but in this film I couldn't have cared less what happens to her. The plot is typical Hallmark and with a different cast could have been magical, but its way missed the mark this time.

A lame film
blueboot29 November 2017
Set in the 2017 run-up to Christmas centring on a young woman who pines for love. Sarah (Ashley Newbrough) has only ever lived in her small home town. In her sheltered environment she seldom meets suitors, romance never sparks. A pact is made with her childhood best friend Nick (Adam Hurtig) to build a snowman every Christmas until she finds the man of her dreams - oblivious to Nick's dreams. Their snowman pact and strong friendship continues for twenty years, into adulthood. Yet Sarah remains utterly blind to what the audience knows; ever since that pact Nick has deeply loved Sarah. Believable thus far, however, the next part is not. You are supposed to believe a red scarf, once belonging to her deceased mother, if placed on the snowman will bring Sarah a man specifically named Cole, and love. Worse follows.

As if by magic, a handsome stranger called Cole (Jessis Hutch) knocks on her door next day at 9am, returning the red scarf that had blown away. Sarah is invited to lunch, and out on a date. Meanwhile, lovesick, spurned best friend Nick obsequiously accepts the intruder into Sarah's, and his life. Cole, weirdly obsessed by all things snowy, behaves peculiarly, yet charms Sarah into potentially leaving with him to Europe on Christmas Eve. Will she travel with him? That is the rub in the 90 minute runtime you'll never get back.

Tension in the movie is absent. The three main characters do not carry the film sufficiently for this to be more than a long, slow yawn. A dozen supporting characters are unaccredited; one of whom, Sarah's father, catches the attention most. Kind, tolerant, understanding, he has all the best lines and steals the show! None of Sarah's work colleagues are remotely realistic. Always late, she chatters about love, eats nonstop… and eventually deigns to open her laptop. How exhausting! Her boss praises Sarah for all the non-existent work. Anything Sarah does is sycophantically praised. Doubtless romantic movie buffs will watch. But this made-for-TV-movie is simply wasting precious time.

A Fascinating Snowman
tabuno8 January 2019
27 November 2017. While this typical Christmas television movie offers the usual characters and predictable plot, what distinguishes this movie from most of the rest of the holiday fair is the script and performance of Jesse Hutch as Cole who seems to suddenly arrive on the scene after Sarah played by Ashley Newbrough describes her perfect man. His odd behavior is a delight to experience on the screen as his obsessions with all things winter is so becoming and becomes an insightful fantasy of imagination. What is unfortunate is the rather tepid transformation that Sarah goes through which is more attributable to lazy writing rather than the actress herself. Compare with Michael Keaton's performance in Jack Frost (1998). Snowmance passes for holiday television movie to enjoy, but don't expect spectacular fireworks or a lovefest.

Awful
majoq28 May 2019
The movie is boring. Totally unrealistic. Ok, I know it's Hallmark but even for them this movie is way too much. Sarah is even made to stay in that town by her father and friends even when she always dreamed of having adventures and go after what she wanted. Plus she behaves like a teen!! She settled. She wanted Nick as a friend. Not as a boyfriend. Don't waste your time.

Not Good Enough
PennyReviews22 December 2021
Although one shouldn't expect much from a christmas movie, this one had not wrapped up the main plot prompt nicely. It ended with a lot of open ends, when a film like this one doesn't usually have much of a complicated story to do that. The snowy setting was good though.

Deranged Mutant Killer Monster Snow Boyfriend
rustydalek-3791123 December 2023
Warning: Spoilers
A long time ago, a little boy decided to help a little girl make a "perfect boyfriend" out of snow. A terrible idea, especially since he wanted to be her "perfect boyfriend" himself. But they decided to make an annual tradition of it. As the years went on and they grew up, it became less of a fun past-time and more of an arcane ritual. And as their slavish devotion to their bizarre snow creations continued, they never realized that they were building the snowmen on an old burial site. The bulk of our story takes place the year that the ritual went too far. That year, the suspicious snowman came to life and disguised itself in human form, having learned from years of watching and waiting what the duo defined as a "perfect boyfriend". And so, the freaky frozen construct begins wooing the ditzy woman, much to the chagrin of her hapless, helpless childhood friend. He begins to seethe with anger as he witnesses their antics, and eventually challenges the snow creature by slaying one of its' brethren. They lock themselves in mortal snowball combat, but their ineptitude (and a nosy police officer) end the battle in a draw. The snow creature's final gambit is to invite the ditzy woman on a trip to Paris, but after years of extremely obvious hints from her hapless, helpless childhood friend, a lightbulb goes off in that seldom-used noggin of hers. She chooses to stay behind with her hapless, helpless childhood friend, and the arcane snow creature reverts back to its' original form, vanquished. If only the hapless, helpless childhood friend had thought to take a hairdryer to his foul frozen rival, the whole sordid affair might have been over much more quickly.

One of the best Christmas movies ! The whole romantic concept is perfect ! I watch every time it comes on ! Cole's enthusiasm rivals anything I've ever seen ! If movies are supposed to take you away, this one does the trick ! Thank you !

Celebrates jumping the shark - literally!
SunnyDaise7 December 2023
'SNOWMANCE' is the perfect title for this movie which gets far-fetched, but knows it and happily shows it! For once, this Hallmarky romcom is more about the subtle laughs than the big romance. Jesse Hutch is always lovely in these good hearted TV productions, but it is fun to see his slightly sillier side here, playing the quirky script out with the perfect balance of compassion and character. I didn't know the synopsis before hand, which added to the fun, but I'd still watch again knowing the plot because I'll enjoy the original details again, which makes it different from other festive films.
