Please read the negative reviews

The negative reviews probably explain themselves.

One states that the show starts off great but the reviewer quite dislikes the third series. Even though the examples of why they liked the preceding episodes actually took place in the third series. This particular reviewer had also suggested "subtitles on is vital". I mean c'mon! Sorry - I mean, come on.

One review used the word "tripe" which makes it very difficult not to stereotype.

Another writer calls on "white Liberal guilt" which doesn't particularly lay the groundwork for an objective, unbiased review. Especially when there are no other reasons for disliking it.

One more with the word "tripe", and not much else there.

The last one to date is my favourite. All caps except the last three words, which is just "terrible" repeated. They also use the extremely successful comedian and theatre actor Lenny Henry as an example of what they consider poor. There's a lot to dissect with this review, in terms of who this person might be, why they would want to write a review like this, why are they are so angry, but most importantly - why on earth would they watch a programme so clearly not commissioned for them in the first place.

Personally, I very much have enjoyed it so far. The characters are fun and engaging. The plot interesting enough. The underpinning racial, ideological, cultural, etc. story has been well executed.

THE MUSIC WAS ALSO GREAT! That positivity is for you jamesstanley-36181. Not everyone is out to get you.

Inner city laughs
c_hookham7 March 2019
In Birmingham's inner city lives Mobeen: former small time drug dealer and now surrogate father to his much younger sister. He's desperately trying to do the right thing by being a good brother, friend and Muslim but his idiotic friends and family are constantly landing him in it. Inner city Birmingham isn't somewhere that gets a lot of dramatic attention and this opens the doors to Mobeen's quirky, sometimes gritty and frequently surreal world. The characterisation is fantastic and in Uncle Shady has one of the funniest and most surreal characters for a long time.

Brutally funny

The story arch in this series was incredibly moving. Funny stories mixed with real life conversations. I watched all three seasons in one week and the final episode had me feeling for everyone.

The final few minutes ... We'll see for yourself.

Great Show, would highly reccomend

Warning: Spoilers
Initially I believed the negative reviews assuming that the show was trash, but after a friend suggested the show, i became very intrigued.

The show is a great mixture of social and economic problems along with a large amount of comedy, Guz Khan not only creates a hilarious performance but touches on subjects such as police brutality and racism in modern society. I found the characters relatable in their own ways and would suggest that everyone watch the first episode before judging.

Found this by accident on Netflix then on iplayer. It's an amazing surprise we did not think we would laugh half as much as we did.

Hilarious, Confident yet grounded in reality
hasanzehn20 December 2017
Is it a laptop or a dead cat? Guz Kan leads with a virtuoso performance as his on screen persona Mobeen Dean. I've seen and heard Mobeen skits over the years, wildly funny yet pragmatic and to be able to see his own series become reality is truly a pleasure. Some of the jokes you may miss completely, either because you're not aware of the lexicon used or the cultural significance but it' still damn well funny.

Episode 2 is particularly brilliant and episode 4 closes with a more mature, in a Mobeen kinda way, debate on xenophobia and fear of the unknown/misunderstood. I enjoyed every episode and so will you too. Great acting and production was off a very good quality, I recognised all the locations as local to me which was a nice bonus. The direction was good and the editing linked it together well.

Brilliant. Looking forward to Mobeens return. Hopefully longer with more episodes!

It's so freaking good...
yamxt60021 March 2020
... that I am watching it for the third time now. While being hilariously funny, it also touches serious topics. All actors are on point, especially Guz Khan of course. I hope to see a lot more of him in the future.

First 3 were good 4 is rotten
chris_rowe-881-16882016 June 2023
The first 3 series were really good, set in reality, a bit over the top in places but more in a charming way than anything, the acting isn't top tier but it feels quite natural, more so than most other sitcoms, especially ones like citizen khan. It's really fun, binge worthy and fresh.

So when 4 came out I was looking forward to it, I like Gus a lot but season 4 sucked, it was terribly acted, the script was pathetic, it went from kinda fresh to the type of random stupidity on kids will find funny, plus the actors and the delivery of the lines were just rotten, weirdly Gus just becomes totally irritating in this, the stupid cut away lines, just how he tries wayyy to hard to be random, cringe and unfunny. Also yet another show ok at making white jokes!

1-3 9/10 4 3/10.

4 Lions Humor In a tv show
momo_rahman19 January 2018
Loved it can , first thought it would be just one of those stupid humour kind of comedic shows but some episodes touch a bit on serious subjects which was great, the cast seem really great and comfortable in front of a camera. Had so many moments where i laughed so much a cried... sadly doesn't happen with many comedies. Really looking forward to Mobeen returning, not good at reviews just watch it for yourself and see why.

Humor and BBC
pratapchaudhry31 October 2020
As most people are aware of BBC agenda now( showing culprits as victims) , it an amazing attempt to pass on that with humor...good job, we get it...Islam is not threat to the world...

Very well written, almost great
wasrmark30 August 2022
Acted wonderfully, fun plots with witty banter. Too much of the typical white-man-is-racist or conservatives-are-bad nonsense. But outside of that, brilliant.

I appreciate the good nature and frequent indignation of Mobeen, as he navigates life between friends, little sister, the law, and society in general.

His two best mates add a colorful support and backdrop. I felt the little sister was a bit cliche but the character helps keep the world grounded.

I particularly liked the episode H-ALTRight, though as I mention the writer is confused regarding to which political agenda most racists belong, the episode presents an interesting juxtaposition between two opposing ideologies and the common ground they discover. The characters are not one dimensional.

Started Out Great But Series 3 Was An Abject Disaster
martimusross11 February 2019
Man Like Mobeen

Series 1 to 3

I have been a fan of this from the start Series 1 and 2 were Brilliant cutting edge comedy. Clever inventive slapstick humour playing on every "ism" and "ist" in the world today. Very much set in Birmingham so subtitles on is vital.

Much of the humour derived from the strange juxtaposition off gangland culture in absurd settings like B & Q or a food bank.

But what the hell happened in Series 3, it turned into a total disaster. Why was this;

It became entirely self indulgent

The comedy just ceased to be funny, there were some funny lines and some clever writing but it all became heavy and ponderous.

For whatever reason the writers inserted some ridiculous scenarios, gratuitous violence and some "relevant" political and race issues. Any idiot knows a comedy show is not the correct vehicle for political points.

It does not make a show funny by inserting in a contrived way current issues, we had food banks, we had public schools, we had pay day loans, fake halal meat etc etc

In conclusion I reckon the show has so wrecked itself the BBC should stop here.

So damn good!

I don't understand the negative reviews. This show is brilliant on so many levels. The characters have great chemistry with amazing comedic timing. Only negative is there aren't enough episodes. At times I laughed so hard I cried 😂

REFRESHING & SURPRISINGLY FUNNY
creative-violet20 April 2019
This was so refreshing to watch. All the characters seem to work well together. Uncle Shady is EVERYTHING in this series. He needs his own show. :)

Great jokes, greats script writing, great cast and character execution for everyone who works on this series.

Bring on Season 3!!

I've enjoyed this so much that I created an account to leave a rating and review. I think the lead character is so deep and nuanced as well as the series having a great blend of humour that will work on many different levels depending on your culture

Terrible
simon-162-57579515 February 2020
What can I say. The acting is terrible, the story lines don't fair much better and the amount of victim hood blaming is astonishing. The BBCS white Liberal guilt is oozing out of each episode.

This is hilarious!
marissa_maynard8 July 2020
During lockdown I've been binge watching a lot of stuff on BBC iPlayer, Netflix, etc. And this is one that I've always seen on my 'recommended' but never thought to check it out.

What a mistake I made! Man Like Mobeen is hilariously funny. I've only finished Season 1 for now, but am looking forward to starting the next one!

Some characters are real-life - and some just caricatures - but they mix together well. Guz Khan does a great job in the lead role, and the supporting actors who play Eight and Nate are superbly cast. Great stuff!
