Boyd asks Chuck, "why do you default to demanding and threatening? Why don't you ever ask what I want?" Chuck responds, "what do you want?" and Boyd says, "thanks for asking. I like simple pleasures: butter in my ass, lollipops in my mouth, and taking my boat to Antibes free and clear." Though Chuck gives no sign that he recognizes the reference, the first two items in Boyd's list are actually a quotation from the movie Boogie Nights. Later, while talking to Connerty, Boyd again integrates a movie quote into his everyday speech without any signal to the person with whom he is talking that he is quoting something. Boyd asks Connerty, "The Nite Owl case made you. Do you really want to tear that all down?," which is something that Bud White (Russell Crowe) says to Ed Exley (Guy Pearce) in the movie LA Confidential. Unlike Chuck, Connerty shows that he recognizes that Boyd is quoting a movie by replying with Exley's next line: "With a wrecking ball.
Wanna help me swing it?"
While lying in bed, Connerty sees McKayla putting on her flight attendant's uniform and asks, "where you going?" She responds, "Barcelona." While this may seem like an unremarkable exchange, this dialogue is a verbatim quotation of the first lyrics in the song "Barcelona" from the Sondheim musical Company. Additionally, the characters who sing this song in the musical, Bobby and April, are in the same situations and costumes as Connerty and McKayla: Bobby is lying in bed, and April is putting on her flight attendant's uniform.
While Connerty is trying to convince Boyd to help him catch Chuck, Connerty says, "Chuck, I fear, has begun to abuse his power. That he's become something of a tyrant." Boyd replies, "And you're gonna what? Put one in his ear during a performance of 'Our American Cousin'?" Connerty blanches and demurs, saying, "Not how I'd phrase it." "Our American Cousin" is the play that President Abraham Lincoln was watching when he was assassinated by John Wilkes Booth; after shooting Lincoln, Booth jumped from the balcony and yelled, "Sic Semper Tyrannus" ("Thus always to Tyrants"), implying that he murdered Lincoln because he thought the president was a tyrant. Therefore, Boyd is suggesting that Connerty should kill Chuck, and Connerty is saying that he doesn't want to go that far.
Lawrence Boyd, played by actor Eric Bogosian mentions to Chuck that he wants to get back on his yacht "The Champlain". In 1988, Eric Bogosian stared in the movie "Talk Radio", his character's name in that movie was "Barry Champlain".
