A surreal "comedy" about our failure to communicate that fails to communicate
ayoreinf30 July 2018
Humor doesn't translate easily across caltural borders. I often have a problem with Japanese humor, but I am sure this was supposed to be a comedy. I chuckled about three times throughout the film and smirked a few more. I can understand that the target of the jokes was mainly the human failure to communicate enhanced by absurd exaggeration of Japanes manners and social customs. So It definitly could be funnier if you're Japanese, but I can judge a movie only through the eyes I have. And that means that despite of the fact I believe I got the point, I wasn't moved, I barely laughed, as I already said, and to sum it up bluntly - I couldn't care less. The fact that we do get three surreal stories told linearly but in a reverse order, only serves to confuse the viewers more. And the exaggerated robotic acting simply guarantees we won't relate to any cartoon passing on the screen. I didn't use the term characters because this movie doesn't have any.
