Koode will be hard to top, 2018.
CobertNeede14 July 2018
Anjali Menon proves yet again why she's the master at depicting relationships, whether that be between blood bonds or pure love. Koode is another one in her list of exemplar movies. It tops her best film before Koode, Manjadikuru.

Koode is magical at times, pulling the viewers in for a experience that will stay with you for a long, long time. Prithviraj encompasses a role that is difficult, hard and almost painful to portray and combine that with wonderfully woven characters, you get Koode. Nazriya is not a plus, she is the soul of the film. Her comeback is certainly a very well made one. Koode is not a emotional roller-coaster that gives you all the chills and tears. It's perhaps a rare sight in Malayalam cinema where dark, subtle characters get treatment that even complex ones don't.

Koode's depiction of brother-sister relationship is spot on. All the awkwardness, the fights, the emotional aspect , all meet together in the Nazriya-Prthvi combo. The songs, the score were pretty neat, considering that the score does play a important part aside from the conversations.

Koode's main selling point is the 2 and half hour content the film presents. The pace is slow but engaging to an extent where you will forget that you're actually watching an almost 3 hour movie.

Koode is the best from Malayalam in 2018 ; so far. It will be hard to top. Really, really hard to top.

THE BEST MOVIE MADE BY ANJALI- THE DIRECTOR IN HER CAREER SO FAR. . Proved again that little things makes life better. There's nothing new she got to tell but, these little things which we've forgotten over by the influence of new devices around us let's us realise there's something you've got to realise when you're with your dearest ones.

I still couldn't believe how she came across the teenage Prithviraj, Parvathy. Felt it like Prithviraj went back in his time zone to play for it with the movie crew. Anyway amazing it was. Applause to casting team. . Anjali the script writer along with Littil Swayamp(cinematograper) takes the movie to a different stage of beauty when it comes to the emotions of Joshua- his joy, hardships and how his little sister Jenny helps him in how to live life in between all these. . A highly recommended movie to watch if you wanna feel good that has good performances, visuals, music, neatly sketched real characters that will stay with even after you ends up in watching it.

Anjali Menon weaves Prithviraj-Parvathy's brilliance
hollywoodfc13 September 2018
A little more than four years after Bangalore Days, writer-director Anjali Menon has returned to the box office with Koode (Together). The slice-of-life movie is an adaptation of Sachin Kundalkar's Marathi film Happy Journey. Soon after I finished watching Koode, I watched the trailer of the original Marathi film, just to get a sense of how differently Anjali has reimagined this tale of fantasy.

Capsule Review: Koode (6 Stars)
nairtejas23 July 2018
Director Anjali Menon is a gifted storyteller as is evident in this fantasy drama about emotional bondage that narrates the life tale of a man (Prithviraj Sukumaran) who is forced to move out of his house at a very young age to toil thousands of miles away so as to help fend for his parents and ailing kid sister. He returns to find himself at the center of (familial) chaos, only aggravated by the departure of a certain somebody who has regarded him as closely as any other person in their life without reciprocation. Koode focuses on human relationships, more so the often deep yet unexplored connection between siblings, and aims to highlight its significance in our attempt to be and stay happy. Because of the over-smart and jolly performance by Nazriya Nazim, it is Sukumaran who shines like a lantern in a moonless night. His nuanced performance as this young, energetic football-loving boy who transforms into a machine, bound not by love but by duty, makes me want to see more of his mature air in future films. He is a whole sentence in a world full of exclamation marks in Koode, thanks to the talented Menon, and is supported by a surprisingly good Renjith and the typecast Maala Parvathi. Parvathy, on the other hand, puts up a dull performance mostly because of the uninteresting character that she essays. Menon's art is symbolic and that's what works gleamingly in this over-dramatic and poignant tale of two siblings who try and cultivate the relationship between them even when the opportunity has passed long before. I am not a fan of the fantastical element of Koode, because it is bound to go the predictable route later, which it does, and which is only aggravated by the terribly long screenplay. Koode does not see an end easily as it goes on sermoning for at least 30 good minutes in the second half to eventually climax like an adult TV star: forced. Koode has forced humor in the backdrop of a hill station with exotic locations and beautiful photography; it has vibes of Bangalore Days (2014) brought in with the help of Roshan Mathew and his pretentious story arc; it has long, overdrawn shots that unnecessarily extend the running time; and it has little content embedded with cliched fluff. I'd blame the story idea and how Menon transforms it into an ordinary piece of cinema. Watch it on a weekday (reduced ticket prices) and see how the first statement of this review has been beautifully narrated. Calling it a subtle experience would be a travesty. TN.

A feel good movie
rahulbinu14 July 2018
Warning: Spoilers
The movie goes through the emotions of josh played by prithviraj. He experiences a very emotional trauma when his sister dies. The story then revolves around this. First of All the cinematography is fantastic shows the beauty of Ooty never seen in a movie before. Secondly the music and background score has been done really well. The script is written in a slow manner but beautifully expressed. Dialogues were impactful and realistic. And the acting is phenomenal everyone has done a great job especially prithviraj. Overall a feel good movie with emotional and comical aspects which make you cry and laugh .

Dragging of Emotions.
harishmadireddi21 June 2020
One thing the movie carries its potential to have a nature of repetitiveness is the cinematography. It was just top notch and few shots are leaving my sight when i close my eyes. It was just awesome. Story and screenplay where good enough but felt like second half didnt had much to hold the emotions tighter and by the end u get a feeling of dragging emotional connect. The initial of point of the story was very nice the way joshua explores himself is the story. Loved the performance of 3lead actors.

Anjali Menon makes a slow, soft, mist of a film, which puts relationships as the center piece.
ab-nash-thewarlock18 July 2018
Anjali Menon is a masterful craftsman of what she does best, picturing relationships and putting it on the screen. If you have seen any of her previous works, you're thoroughly not going to be disappointed as she ventures away from writing and goes director with Koode.

Like the name Koode, is a story about a brother and a sister, their relationship and how Joshua (Prithviraj)'s life became influential after coming back to his hometown after departing for the middle east at a young age. The story then flows through Joshua and Jenny (Nazriya) whose relationship flourishes through time and age, and develops a soft engulfing story which is wholesome, heart-warming and tender.

Little Swayamp's camera work has always been a favorite, his use of available light and under-exposing most shots is pleasing and controlled giving it that warm crusty feeling the film's aiming for, Tying it together has to be the music M Jayachandran and Raghu Dixit a personal favorite has composed for the film, the warm melodic music engulfs and transcends the beautiful visuals from Kodai. though I wish the flow of the film could have been better, though most would argue that it's the editor at fault, but no, Anjali Menon still needs time to craft her Direction into achieving that flow.

It's a feel good movie, it does what it needs to and that's all that matters.

Poignant, but could have eleborated a plot point
StoryTaker15 January 2019
Warning: Spoilers
I think the word 'poignant' sums up this movie quite well. I found it irresistably heart wrenching. Loved Prithviraj's nuanced performance, while Nazriya's joyous energy is always welcome. I like how the trailer kept the fantasy element of the movie a secret as it had me completely surprised. Great performances all around.

Joshua's arc is mesmerising even while it is tragic. His descent from a happy boy full of dreams to depressed shell of a man was heart-breaking. Watching the sister, on an after-life quest no less, coax some life back into this shell was a joy and had me rooting for her success. The movie made me genuinely care for Joshua.

However, I felt they didn't give enough attention to the abuse arc. The young actor did a fantastic job portraying the young Joshua. The moment he realised what that train was taking him to, I felt trapped along with him. I wanted to know what happened next. Did he escape that man or was the abuse still going on? Did his family ever know the truth? Jenny seems to know about this, in one scene. Did he talk to her about it? I felt like the character never quite got the closure he deserves regarding that topic, enough for him to fully recover.

a trite relationship drama with many letdowns 2.5/ 5
madappallyjunction17 July 2018
Never expect a B days or U hotel in koode where the meandering story with very less entertainment value goes on and on with out making any real impact and may often bore you.. The fantasy/ super natural element that forms the main plot element of Koode goes beyond the level of acceptance in many occasions. You can pick out many scenes where the imagination goes overboard and awry. In addition to this many clichéd sequences and stock characters rob the charm from this movie of relationships that after a classy and poetic beginning soon turns out to be a dull affair with predictable and dragging proceedings.

A movie showing human bonds.
Azanspy18 October 2018
Anjali Menon did what she do best. Showed a lot of love between the characters. Koode is an experimental movie. So we have to respect the movie as experimental movies are always denied by the Malayalam audience. Koode did it's best to make us fall in love with it. If someone ask me to pick the best side of Koode, it will be cinematography. Littl Swayamp did a fantastic job. Good performance by Prithviraj and Ranjith. Koode maybe not everyone's piece of cake. But it's worth watching for one time. Atleast for the outstanding cinematography and direction and yeah, the cutest Nazriya.

A small world that changes a person's view of life
karthiksuresh-873987 August 2018
Anjali Menon's classic or one of the best movies of 2018. Prithviraj, being the lead actor along with Nazriya, are siblings namely-Joshua and Jenny. The story at first takes form of an emotional wave but slowly adds the fun loving and powerful characters that change the phase of the movie. If you have always wanted to see the best of Prithviraj...this is the movie. In fact the screenplay of the movie is something that stands out,and gives the audience a smooth yet emotional journey. Nazriya's spectacular acting after a really longtime(last being bangalore days) is something that drives the essence of the movie. The relationship between siblings, family and your loved ones are clearly showcased by the characters. The movie's music and background score needs special recognition. The scenes what you feel are the best are truly the moments we live through.Such a movie needs a lot of understanding from the people without making it too bitter. The director along with the team has been able to pull this off.The movie might seem to be dragging but such an aspect always adds to the effect of what we see.

Beautiful movie: Surreal, masterful
cinish5 August 2018
Koode is a beautiful surreal movie. Slow-paced, the director masterfully communicates directly into the viewer's heart. I felt like a drenched piece of cloth which Anjali could evoke tears out of whenever she chooses to squeeze out the emotion.

Dialogues have been nicely kept short. And a lot is conveyed through minimal dialogue or none at all. Renjith, Prithvi, Parvathi have all acted very well and seem to have just become the protagonists. Music lines well with the movie and keeps the emotional loveful feel through the movie.

Surreal aspect of the movie has been blended in so nicely. The sceptic in me never woke up. Somehow, the director could make me accept the surreal without judgement. The movie addresses the intuition of the viewer and not his logic. Nicely done, beautiful journey.

Little bit of connection to Bangalore Days could be felt through Nasriya and the dog and the general niceness of Bangalore Days is seen in this movie too. But what I was really impressed with was the graceful handling of the surreal. Little Swayamp's cinematography was pretty good as was the beautiful tropical landscape of Kerala.

To reiterate, I am a little taken aback by how easily I gave my heart to the movie. There were many points where the movie made me emotional without giving me a choice. The blending in of the real and surreal was the other high point. And no unnecessary questioning of the surreal nor a smart reveal at the end that would belittle the viewer.

For the slow pace of the movie, the movie does say quite a few things and very beautifully too. Some pretty good philosophical insights and positive attitudes to take away if you care.

So close, yet far away - A tale of emotions
divyalakshmi-9249020 January 2019
Koode is yet another beautiful depiction of subtle emotions after Manjadikuru. Anjali Menon possess the art of exploring beauty in small & ordinary things which is well explained through her cinematography.

At the outset, it looks like the film is all about brother - sister bonding but it has got more to add on. As the story unfolds you will realise that all relationships undergoes its own level of frustation, happiness, love, sadness and an inexplicable bonding. To depict all of it so honestly is a challenge and I think the director has made a bold attempt.

How a family deals with an ordeal, their decisions and consequences, their emotions throughout the journey is what koode brings to you on plate. The usage of pets make it so exquisite, brilliant cast makes it all real & flawless. Anajali has managed to find a close match for the young looks of Prithvi & Parvathy which is appreciable.

The nature cant be manipulated, so the reality but its all in the eyes of beholder that changes the perspective is what i learnt after watching this wonderful movie. One needs to watch this movie to feel it real the joy of giving & caring selflessly. A message that hits you hard that happiness doesn't lie in materialistic stuffs. A must watch to all those who wants to understand the concept of real love.
