A couple weeks ago, we learned that a new take on Red Sonja had gone into production – after spending decades in development hell – with Matilda Lutz (Revenge) in the title role. Deadline reports that Lutz is joined in the cast by Oliver Trevena, who has experience wielding a sword thanks to his role in the 2019 film The Rising Hawk. Trevena is taking on the role of Tr’aal, “a gladiator-type warrior who joins Sonja in her fight against an evil emperor”.
M.J. Bassett (Solomon Kane) is directing Red Sonja from a screenplay by Joey Soloway (Transparent) and Tasha Huo (Netflix’s Tomb Raider anime). This version of Red Sonja is derived from the sword and sorcery comic books by Dynamite Entertainment, based on the character created by Robert E. Howard and adapted by Roy Thomas. Details on the plot are being kept under wraps. All we know is that Sonja...

Ukraine’s Film.UA has closed a raft of deals during the Cannes Market, as the production and distribution heavyweight has defiantly continued to do business on the Croisette despite the ongoing war back home.
Headlining the company’s Cannes slate is “Mavka. The Forest Song,” an animated feature about a magical spirit who’s responsible for protecting the forest from the outside world but faces her greatest challenge when she falls in love with a human.
Manymore Films will be releasing the film in theaters across Scandinavia and has also acquired the rights to other projects in the Film.UA catalog. Feelgood Entertainment has acquired the rights to “Mavka” and is planning a theatrical release in Greece. Filmbridge has also taken distribution rights for Mongolia for the animated feature and a slate of other titles in the Film.UA catalog.

Case will play Doug’s angsty teenage daughter, Maggie, who realizes while on board the plane that something has gone terribly wrong, and becomes the protector she was destined to be as she cares for her younger sister. Bear attacks and marauding hordes can’t rescue this dismal attempt to conjure up an epic medieval adventure
Say what you like about the artistic integrity of Game of Thrones, but at least it never skimped on the saucy stuff. Fall of a Kingdom pitches itself as “Game of Thrones meets Braveheart”, but lacks the redeeming feature that united both those sources of inspiration: entertainment value. It’s a dull historical action drama that is in desperate need of some gratuitous sex or violence to liven up its near two-hour running time.
Originally called The Rising Hawk and shot in Ukraine (home country of co-director Akhtem Seitablaev), Fall of a Kingdom attempts to conjure an epic sense of adventure with its Carpathian mountains backdrop and large cast of costumed extras. Maksim (Alex MacNicholl) and Myroslava (Poppy Drayton) are the children of rival neighbouring chieftains; they begin courting during a bear attack,...

Ukraine produces around 35 films a year. Most of these are small scale dramas; action films are rare. Taking on an epic story like that of Zakhar Berkut with a big budget and an international cast is ambitious indeed. A huge hit on release there last year, the film, renamed The Rising Hawk, is now about to be released internationally, but it's a very different experience if you don't have the same cultural background and sense of national pride - so how does it translate?
Whilst it's billed as a historical epic based on real events, it's important to understand that the latter description applies only in a loose sense. The film was already been attacked for inaccuracy, which is not altogether fair - like its Scottish counterpart Braveheart, it's actually adapted from a historical novel - Ivan Franko's Zakhar Berkut, previously filmed by Leonid Osyka in 1972 - which...

"Be the one who unites us against the Mongols!" Signature Ent. in the UK has unveiled an official UK trailer for a historical action epic titled Fall of a Kingdom, the new title for a film originally called The Rising Hawk. Made in Ukraine with a Ukrainian filmmaker, the story is about a 13th century family of freedom fighters battling for their lives and liberty in the face of the Mongolian Empire. Their empire had grown to the largest the world had ever known. It's armies now laid siege to much of Eastern Europe. But one small village fights back in the frontier landscape of the Carpathian Mountains. Starring an English-speaking cast including Robert Patrick, Tommy Flanagan, Alison Doody, Poppy Drayton, Alex MacNicoll, and Rocky Myers, Fall of a Kingdom is a fervent "historical, action epic; a tale of power, betrayal, & revenge." Robert Patrick is set to star in a crazy-sounding new film project called The Rising Hawk. This sounds like a fascinating project for Patrick and it's very different from anything that he's done before.
The story is set in 1241 Ad, and it "follows a rebellious Ukrainian villager who, after losing his mother in a vicious attack by the relentless Mongols, must join his father (Patrick) to unite 500 of their fellow villagers and fight against a 10,000-strong Mongolian Army."
That sounds like it has the makings of an epic film. It will be directed by Akhten Seitablaev and John Wynn from a script written by Yaroslav Voitseshek and Richard Ronat. The plan is to shoot the film in Ukraine later this year.
Patrick currently stars in the CBS series Scorpion and it's always great to see him land a good movie gig like this!
